It’s great to have someone at 1B who makes all the plays… and his bat isn’t bad either. I hope we keep Kotchman for awhile.

I don’t understand all the Kotchman bashing. He’s not the ideal 1B bat, but he does have a heck of a glove. he has saved countless bad throws over there.

Kirk, I’m well aware that a pitcher can be effective with less speed. Looks like Smoltz has less speed.
Remember when Pedro Martinez lost his fastball? He kind of had to relearn how to pitch, put a little on, take a little off…he was almost as good after as he was before.

Because you have a soft spot for KJ. If he is indeed an “above average” starter as you say, then the Braves will get good value in return.
At any rate, the team needs help in the pen, so that is what why you ask for a reliever in return. It’s a need-based thing. If they could package him with someone else and get a power bat for LF or RF, that would be acceptable too.

I head the explanation about keeping KJ instead of Conrad but it still makes no sense. No disrespect intended to KJ but Conrad was a breath of fresh air. The Braves just like to make the same mistake over and over again. Their self sabotage is going to put me in the therapists couch.

They do have a day off tomorrow, and he didn’t play on Thursday, so I had a feeling he’d play today anyway.

They sure are! Hey, the roof is open! What’d I tell y’all about dome stadiums? I hate ‘em. In this series, he’s 0-9 with the roof closed, and 3-3 with 3 doubles with it open. Baseball is an outdoor sport.

I just read that the Royals are going to try to convert Tony Pena Jr. to a pitcher. He was DFA’d with a 0.98 BA and one extra base hit. But if they’re able to send him to the minors he’s going to pitch. Of course, with the Braves, his 0.98 BA would make him the top pinch hitter off the bench.

I agree that Conrad brought some excitement… sometimes the Braves are just too predictable and loyal to “veterans” (read: Norton) instead of going with the intangibles. They did that with McCann and Frenchy when they first came up and let them stay….

Might be showcasing Johnson. Conrad seems to be better suited to a bench role, as he demonstrated in his short stint with the Braves.
I’m not as 100% convinced that management has turned the corner on their beloved Kelly. Prado had to fight hard over a two-year period for his chance to start. All around, Prado is the better talent, and that was apparent a while ago.
But, giving the benefit of the doubt, management may want to buff up Johnson’s numbers a bit in order to get something like a decent return for him. Stay tuned.

Because you have a soft spot for KJ.
No soft spots, kirk, just callin’ it the way I see it. When I see a 2B post an aggregate .355-ish wOBA from ‘07-08 (for reference, McLouth’s wOBA this season is .362, and average is typically around .330), I’m not going to dismiss that player because he didn’t hit for half a season in 2009. And I’m probably gonna be upset it he’s traded for a reliever. He is, like it or not, still a valuable commodity, and expendable because of Prado, and if we don’t get value for him now we need to hold on to him and hope he boosts his stock.

Johnson’s stock needs boosting. But not for giving him away. But if management has a real commitment to Prado, and the OF will soon enough be home to Schafer and Heyward (and McLouth and Diaz), where does Johnson fit in?
I doubt he’d want to be a backup, and I doubt he’s suited to the role. Hence, he’s likely a trade enhancer at some point.
