I know one thing when the braves do have a good chance to get a big inning we always settle on 1 run cause we cant move runners over or hit into double plays or have baserunning mistakes, The double plays have been down since Jeff was traded tho
Allowing the fake throw to 3B….is probably the ‘dumbest’ rule in baseball…I would do it on every other pitch… with runners on 1st and 3rd….nothin’ to lose…especially with a runner that MIGHT run on 1B….If pitchers would do it enough…baseball would HAVE to change the rule !!
I gotta admit Counsell at 39 is a good ballplayer, he plays hard every game and can play alot of positions and he is doing well, considering most people say he is a utility guy
The bloggers who crucified Frank Wren for not resigning John Smoltz are awfully quiet today. Is there any chance we can revisit their comments from last February?
bobby gave kudos to counsell last night when i asked about him, basically that he plays the game hard and right and does the little things it takes to win. ….might not be glamorous but dang if it’s not effective.
In paying attention to the Phillies here over the last 2-3 weeks, I’ve had a lot of bad thoughts about what it will be like for our bullpen to try and shut down their offense the last few innings of games in CBP.
Thankfully, we only have 3 games left this season in Philadelphia.
If the pitcher does the ‘fake throw” often enough…the runner on 1B can’t possibly get any kind of jump from 1B…has to wait til the pitch is almost delivered…so…do it enough… and NOBODY will run on the pitch…actually it’s even worth doin’ with 3-2 and 2 outs…cuts down a couple of steps on the runner at 1B…DUMB rule…
I’ve always like Counsell as a player, if more player were like him the sport would be alot better. Sick of seeing no huslting and no heart from most of the players in this sport
At one time …I didn’t think McLouth could ever be much of a leadoff hitter…but lately he’s looking much better at it…and taking a bunch of close pitches…
Vabravesfan – That Csey Kotchman is a stud at first base. Those 4 home runs and .385 slugging percentage are awesome production. Thanks for teaching me everything about him
McFann – haven’t gone through all the comments yet so not sure if you already said anything about it but how do you feel about B-Mac starting a day game after a night game?
I hate to agree with what N Nine said but it’s true. They can’t lose. They don’t need Halladay to win the east, they’ll win it with Happ Hamels Moyer and whoever those other guys are. Their offense and their high school field is more than enough to make up for their lack of starting pitching. Braves have to have both good pitching and good offense to win for whatever reason. Maybe if we had started the season with the regular lineup we have now we’d be in the thick of it but unfortunately we had to wait out the 2 month Jeff and Kelly experiment. At least it didn’t last all season, I guess.
There’s not a chance in he__ that Donkey Cox even knows who Craig Counsell IS – So asking him about Counsell was a waste of time. He was gonna give you some “Hee-Haw” answer (which he did)
Please give us meaningful information. What an idiot thinks of another team’s utility players doesnt qualify
I think we should wait awhile before go throw dirt on John Smoltz’s career. Let’s see how he’s pitching come the last 6 weeks of the season.
I’m mad that he left, but I not convinced he’s done. Need more time to decide that, just like we needed more time before calling it a season for the Braves.

I do think Kotchman should win the gold glove and he is only a 280. 10 hr 60ish rbi type of hitter.
Barborosa would give us more power but less hits and downgrade defense as well.
so glad The Wren didn’t give smoltz 5M. He would have to be in the pen in our rotation.
Nice call, Frank. Job well done. However, smoltz, hudson, gonzo, and soriano sounds pretty nice
Robert…how about what an idiot(you) thinks about the Braves? None of us care what you have to say, but we’re stuck with you. Maybe one day you will actually have something relevant to say.
I was listening to a Red Sox broadcast not too long ago. The Sox announcers were talking about the possibility of Smoltzie getting released or moving to the bullpen.
Kirk, of course you’re right…but early returns don’t look good. Combine that with Glavine’s low 80s velocity and Hanson’s first eight starts, and Wren looks like a guy unafraid to take the heat for unpopular, tough decisions.
He clearly made the right ones with Glavine, Smoltz and Hanson.
For all the Cox’s (i.e. – feeble minded)who want to declare John Smoltz to be done. He has 22K’s and all of 4 walks in 25-some innings. That’s hardly the inside numbers of someone who is done
Now, think up some excuses for Bozo the Clown and watch the game (you might learn something, if you avoid watching what Cox does)
If Smoltz gets released he will not come back to Atlanta this year. I know people who have dealt with this guy in the business community. His ego will not allow him to admit he is wrong. John Smoltz is about John Smoltz
hey what ever happened to Ned Yost? Is he still in baseball? I still think he may be the heir apparent to Cox… I love Cox except when he brings in his A relievers (Gonzo, Soriano) with 5-run leads…
Hey! D-Lowe hits better than G.Norton PERIOD! In fact I think he actually hits better than a few braves…this offense is pretty strange…Warning track power! only gets hits, has no speed…dont hit much with RISP
Yeah, if we got a good prospect back it would be more defensible for sure, but if you’re gonna trade them a starting position player than has been, over his career, above average with the bat (which, given his position, is more valuable), I’d hope that we’d be able to get more than just a reliever, if you get my drift…
