When Kelly Johnson has ONE season rivaling those numbers……..as opposed to 4 STRAIGHT…………then get back to me Steve from OH.
Garret Anderson, wOBA, in sequence, from 2000-2003: .332, .334, .363, .371
Kelly Johnson wOBA, 2007 and 2008: .363, .346.
Kelly Johnson was better than GA offensively for half of the stretch you indicated, and equal to him for the other year! I’d say that “rivals” GA’s production, wouldn’t you?
A rebuttal, perhaps? Oh, and be sure to address what I said and only what I said, I want a direct rebuttal, ok? Don’t dodge what I wrote, address it and defend your opinion, ok?
Konerko plays in one of the most homer-friendly ballparks in baseball and is maddeningly inconsistent. I wouldn’t be totally opposed to getting him, but he’s not worth a package that includes Medlen.
Also, don’t forget about what we’d be losing with Kotchman’s defense.
Steve from OH…….I’m still waiting for you to tell me that Garret’s 4 year run from 2000-2003 werent “above position performance”. He and bobby cox are the problem with this braves team now, and the sooner they are gone the better. Bobby cox showed once again what a terrible manager he is when he sent down one of the hottest hitters on the team Conrad to make room for his favorite little boy Kelly Johnson. Cox manages with his heart and not his head. He loves Kelly Johnson and he would rather sacrifice the good of the team, just so his favorite players are sitting by him on the bench. Not to mention he wanted to quote: make sure everybody is here. He was referring to this minor league talent backup shortstop that is hitting 170, and Norton who is hitting less than 200. No manager in his right mind would send down a kid who is hitting 340, and replace him with an over the hill pinch hitter that cant hit his weight. Please Wren, grow a pair of balls and get rid of Cox, or else, maybe the owners should start at the top and get rid of you. This team has a chance to make the wild card, but there is no way with Cox making the decisions. He constantly miss uses his bullpen by putting the wrong guy on the mound, has he ever heard of using the guys that are hot, instead of his favorites once again. Gonzales is done for the year, and this clown lefty Oflantery or what ever the hell his name is, and Peter the Great are pathetic. Oh and far as owning for your 4.43 post or what ever, grow up.
kirkinga: I hear ya. GA is my man so that’s why I gave defending him a shot. But now I understand that they kid (and call him Loaf) because they care. And you are right: the irrational love for KJ is only rivaled by the obstinance of it. In any case, as I posted before, as long as Prado remains the starter I’m fine with KJ getting some playing time especially if it will move the day closer that Greg ‘Roving Minor League Instructor’ Norton comes true.
Andruw Jones knocked his 15th HR. Come on, who would have thought he’s have more than any Brave in homers?
No, there were one or two of us who really wanted Andruw back this offseason and thought he had hit bottom and would bounce back, and that he was a lost-cost high-reward type.
I’m glad he’s doing well, he will always be a Brave in my mind. Heck, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Braves trade for him if they wouldn’t have to give up much. He could play any OF position.
You know where I got the name Loaf? From a family member who has the same nickname because he is slow, never gets in a hurry, and is just so laid back and just whatever dude about everything. I guess I don’t love him either. I hope he never meets you, All I’m Saying Is…
Paul Lentz, yet again you are missing the point. i don’t think anyone is arguing that kelly will hit 30+ hrs and drive in over 100 runs. you aren’t comparing apples to apples my friend. your post said to find someone who would rather have kelly than loaf now…not Loaf 8 years ago vs kelly, but kelly vs loaf now. but, even if you have since switched and can’t remember what you are trying to defend, it still isn’t comparing apples to apples. again, middle inf versus corner outfielder…you can’t just compare raw stats. steve has provided you stats that says kelly has been as valuable…
Lentz….I am not the one arguing for KJ over GA. You’ve got the wrong guy. I am saying that you’re a loser who got PWNED by KJ today. Nothing more, nothing less.
All I’m Saying Is… , let it go. I use to feel the same way. March, April, and first part of May was tough, but now we’re seeing him come around as he did last season and as cabravesfan said he would as well.
Just laugh if off and be happy he’s helping the team at a cheap price while some making more are not proving to be as good an investment.
Did Lentz really cite Garrett Anderson’s stats from 2000 through 2003? Kinda funny that he didn’t have much power before then, and didn’t have much power after that, huh? When did drug testing become official? Oh, that’s right 2004. Wouldn’t be shocked one bit if Loaf is one of the infamous 103 from 2003.
Paul Lentz…why don’t we take KJ out back and shoot him because he had a bad first half. Good God man, the guy struggled badly. You think he did it on purpose?? can you give him a break and see if maybe he figured it out. is he the first guy to ever have a terrible first half??
The Blogger Formerly known as Billy………..how many games has Kelly won this year “with his bat”? Compare that to the number of games he has lost “by failing to deliver in the clutch”.
If Garret is so “washed up”, then why do his numbers “B!TCH SLAP” Kelly’s offensive numbers this year?
With Chicago taking over the NL Central today, the Braves will now be behind ONLY SF, COL, and STL in the Wild Card. Unlike the Cubs, the Braves have the same number of losses as the Cards, which makes it a little better to be competing against the Cards–SF and COL are the only clubs with fewer losses than the Braves in the WC.
How ’bout those Fish, though? Beating up on the Dodgers right. That is going to be a very important series this week.
As long as you pronounce it correctly (LOW-fuh, in southern, as correctly pointed out yesterday, I think), I don’t find the nick derogatory for Anderson. Found myself going “Get it, Loaf” at the TV the other night, LOL, and loving it when he did. It’s stuck; deal with it.
Where Braveheart? The man shredded the last page or so of the last blog, I mean, tiny two-way IBM shredder action. Some great posts, bro.
And on the daily blog humor, the concept of Dense and “ownage” of an actual erudite blogger is…well, let’s face it, there aren’t enough letters in the acronym alphabet to emulate the laughter. But LOL, ROTFLMAO, etc., etc. Use ‘em all, you still come up short.
Give the man credit for being a stalking horse, though. Spot a blogger who says, in sincerity, that he mostly agrees with Dense, and you can pretty much add THAT dude to the scroll list, LOL. Of course, most of those are Dense faking another moniker, so it all works out.
Personally I would have kept Conrad Brooks over Hernandez or Norton. He seems a lot more valuable both at the plate and in the field. H & N both are hitting under .150, but this is a typical Cox move!
To add on a little. Most would say that Franc our, KJ, and Shaffer limited the lineup…which they did in a sense. However, I asked last month what the Braves Record was with McCann, Chipper, and Esco in the line up. Another Blogger pointed out it was 9-2. By that point the Braves had played roughly 60 games. So while the “3 auto outs” were a factor, I think the fact that our three best hitters were never in the line up consistantly until recently and not surprisingly what has happend? Can somebody tell me what our record is now that when Esco, Bmac, and Chipper is in the lineup at the same time as opposed to one or more of them are missing.
PWHjort, didn’t say it was, but you had just brought up the subject and so I mention you. Nevertheless, what I said beyond your name, was true I believe.
njbraves ………dude, I didnt say that Kelly Johnson shouldnt have been called up. I said that if he was going to get called up, that Greg Norton should have been released.
I guess that I was wrong about Greg Norton?
Kelly Johnson having ONE GOOD GAME, is just that…ONE GAME. Let’s see him go on a MARTIN PRADO HOT STREAK. Then get back to me.
UNCBrave — If you’re still around — one of the names being discussed going to Cleveland is an outfielder named Andrew Lambo. I’ve watched the kid play since he was 10 — an absolute stud. He has climbed through the L.A. minor league system in about 2 years but he can flat out play.
On the surface, advantage L.A. but IF the Indians get Billingsley or Kershaw and Loney AND Lambo, just watch. You will have a different opinion.
My question is. . . why would the Dodgers disrupt their chemistry THIS MUCH when they’re flying so high. Doesn’t make sense, even if they’re trying to potentially match up with Philly in the NLCS. Cliff Lee doesn’t give me goosebumps.
Braveheart, your 11:21 post was very funny, and unfortunately, very true. By the way, I agree with RHR. Your 12:26 on Aaron should be sent to Lew, word for word. I thought it was excellent.
I dont doubt Kelly has had a bad year. However, I would question GA numbers early in the season as well after he declined a rehab stint. Next five years who would you rather have on your team Loaf of KJ? ding ding…thats why KJ has value.
3:21pm: According to Ken Rosenthal, the Dodgers and Indians are in serious discussions about a trade that would send both Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez to Los Angeles in exchange for James Loney, a young starting pitcher, and prospects.
By the way, why dont you check to see if Garret EVER had a first half AS BAD AS the first half of this season for Kelly Johnson?
How ’bout the first half of this year, when he OPSed .701? Or in 2008, when he OPSed .690? Or the 2nd half of 2005, when he OPSed .671? Just remember, if you can cite any 200 PA of lousy performance, so can I. It’s not any more valid than yours (which isn’t valid at all), but all the same, your logic can be spun on its head quite easily.
In any case, unless you respond to my 5:05 directly like I asked, I’m done with this. Later, Dentz!
Yeah, lets argue about stupid sh** on a blog! I think some of you don’t have anything else to do in your lives, are rich and retired, or just off your meds…could be all of the above.
The Braves are winning and just about every player is contributing like the days of the 90’s. Hanson had the flu yesterday and didn’t have his best stuff or I believe we would’ve had a great shot at winning against Gallardo. My point is that even when we face tough pitchers we have pitchers to match them pitch for pitch. We’re in great shape.

JasonInFL ……….If you ask any of the play-off contending GMs out there, they would rather have today’s version of Garret Anderson on their team to help them during the pennent race…than Kelly Johnson. Garret Anderson is a play-off veteran who knows success in the play-offs.
Kelly……well he did have a good September last year when there was no pressure on him.
Late in the season, with the game on the line, who would you rather have up there at the plate……Garret or Kelly?
Let’s see. Garrett Anderson is a cute little .280 hitter with 15 homers before 1999, and after 2004.
What happened in 1998, and what happened in 2004? Oh, that’s right, MLB and Bud Selig and the media and the fans celebrated Sammy and Mac in 1998. In response, guys like Barry Bonds starting in 1999 retaliated by using the roids themselves. Hey, if it was gonna be condoned and celebrated and rewarded in fame and riches, why not join the party? Wouldn’t be shocked if Garrett understandably went on the juice himself right about that time for the very same reasons Bonds did. Then when the party somewhat ended in 2004 with testing, Garrett went straight back to being the .280, 15 home run hitting guy he naturally was.
So, let’s not be retarded and ask when has Kelly Johnson had a run like Garrett had from 2000 through 2003. We all should understand what was going on in baseball right about that time. Outside of that little era, Garrett has been the same .280, 15 home run hitting guy KJ has been (without the on base ability or speed or ability to be serviceable at a tougher defensive position).
Paul Lentz…can you explain how you feel about the use of both Greg Norton and Peter Moylan? I am especially interested to hear your views on the use of Moylan in “critical situations.” Thanks
Braveheart………….I have not heard ANY links whatsoever linking Garret to steroid use. No rumors, nothing. Plus, dude never bulked up. If anything, he has gained weight in the past couple of years.
You have to do better than the “steroids” allegations when it comes to Garret. I can pretty much guarantee that he has never done steroids.
What happened was that Garret was in his PRIME, as Steve from OH likes to say. Those 6 years were “pretty good”, I’d say.
Spot a blogger who says, in sincerity, that he mostly agrees with Dense, and you can pretty much add THAT dude to the scroll list, LOL
How high school is that? Sorry Paul you aren’t popular and since you stood up to Steve, and Wayne and others who believe they alone matter on this blog. And to show you how popular they are anyone who talk to you will be an outcast!
Sociologists would say that you have offended the beliefs and sensibilities of those high on the blog hierarchy and as such, group reinforcing behavior must manifest itself.
How truly truly sad.
Wonder who will be the first on the list? Braveheart are you the keeper of the Scroll By List? Will you be announcing which violators are to be shunned?
njbraves, good question for Paul. I gotta question for you Paul…what do you think Bobby’s usage of the pen in general? I mean, you’ve mentioned your thoughts before, but not in the detail as I would like you to(sarcasm).

Paul Lentz,
So you think most GM’s would keep Loaf over K.J. becasue what he did in the past? You name stats from six years ago, much less in his prime. Loaf will never have those numbers again, so that argument is not valid. Further, we don’t know what Kelly will do in his prime, however we do know he has the potential, which most G.M. will take over a used up corner outfielder with no range. Also, 2nd base is not a prototypical offense position so comparing offensive stats between a corner outfielder with a 2B is garbage anyways. Going back to KJ, he can and has shown he can win a game for you with his bat, I havent seen that with GA at all. GA is a very good role player and adds a quality AB down in the order.
Oh and far as owning for your 4.43 post or what ever, grow up.

Steve from OH………..dude, there is MORE to the game than just “getting on base”. What good is there to get on base if NO ONE KNOCKS YOUR A$$ IN?
The name of the game is SCORING RUNS. Not only could Garret knock in runs……..but he could also hit 30 homers in a season. MULTIPLE TIMES.
On base pct. Is that the BEST you can do?

Paul,
To add on a little.

How ’bout the first half of this year, when he OPSed .701? Or in 2008, when he OPSed .690? Or the 2nd half of 2005, when he OPSed .671? Just remember, if you can cite any 200 PA of lousy performance, so can I.
