12th? (Thanks for the blog, CR)
July 24th, 20093:42 pm
How ’bout a little trade conversation, Carroll? Hearing anything?
One guy comes on here, for the second day this week, and posts that some mysterous radio station in Chicago is reporting that a Konerko deal is in place.
And that’s all it takes to get the rumors flying.
What’s the radio station? Any links? Any “basebal insiders” chimed in?
Or is it just one dude trying to see how riled up he can get a blog?
July 24th, 20093:43 pm
Really hope Chipper’s defense and bat come around and he really gets going in the 2nd half.
Thanks for the new blog Carroll, and say hey to Kelso for us!
July 24th, 20093:44 pm
lol, Paul just posted a novel on the last blog no one will read.
Steve from OH
July 24th, 20093:45 pm
Flange–ok, you’re pushin’ it too. Watch it….
See? Your mention of Michigan made me add an extra period to my usually perfectly-formed ellipses…
July 24th, 20093:46 pm
I have a friend in Chicago that is friendly with 2 guys in the Sox organization. He says there have been and still are on going talks. His friend have suddenly gotten quiet which is typical for them before a trade.
Is it going to happen? I don’t know. The teams don’t match up in my opinion, but just passing along what I have heard from folks that are supposed to be connected.
Don’t beat yourself up, Chip.
You’re pacing yourself for the stretch run in September — something you haven’t been a part of for a few years.
caught your comment on the last blog- It will take a lot more then you can offer to get me to switch my allegiances to whats-his-name…a lot more. But go ahead and keep trying…

Thanks for the new blog Carroll!
Carrol: Saw Kotsay got DFA’d. Any chance we pick him up and get rid of Norton? He can play 1st and the OF
65 games left. 30 home, 35 on the road (including the 3 this weekend in Milwaukee).
July 24th, 20093:49 pm
Sorry Steve, just couldn’t help myself!
So you have a friend of a friend of a friend?
And the other guy listens to some mysterious radio station that has better sources than the Sun Times or the Trib?
I hope it happens. I really do. And I’m not doubting your claims, just not holding my breath on a Konerko trade.
With that said, prove me wrong Frank Wren. Prove me wrong.
Carroll…any truth to the rumor that KJ being called back up has ” set the tone” for a second half failure?? Also, do the Braves players and management feel that having G. Norton on the team means that they might as well “pack it in?”
July 24th, 20093:51 pm
Since I have posted a perspective that Carroll is good luck at least on the first day of a new series several times recently and the Braves then won, here it is– Welcome back Carroll the good luck charm and happy running in Milwaukie, one of the few places in the USA that I have not visited, even though I was a Milwaukee Brave fan because the Crackers were their farm team. Fortuitous, since, despite later brief stints as the farm for the Cardinals (with Braves and Deion favorite Tim McCarver catching) and Twins (with Marlins World Series manager Jack McKeon managing), the Braves moved to the ATL and the rest is history.

Good points and I’d do this deal if Vasquez has said he doesn’t want to go to a western team
July 24th, 2009
I just hope that the Braves are not hoping to acquire Konerko for Medlen, Kotchman, and prospects and then clearing payroll by shipping Vazquez to the Dodgers for prospects.
Unfortunately I could see the Braves adding a bat such as Konerko and agreeing to take on the salary to minimize the prospects that have to be given up (and by no means would I ever include Freddy Freeman in that potential trade). By taking on a new bat salary the Braves would have to clear salary somewhere and I would have to assume they would look to Vazquez, especially with Hudson coming back.
Roman Gal should be all for trading Freeman.
I’m afraid Freeman is Heyward’s “Brayan Pena” and we can’t ever trade him. But, he’ll look pretty good coming off the bench…
Record with KJ back….0-1
July 24th, 20093:55 pm
RG, are you a Michigan fan too?
That’s a negative, Ghostrider!
I’m glad this pre trade deadline is nothing like the offseason where there was so much speculation- and disappointment, in what the Braves were going to be doing. We need more offense, but not at the expense of Vazquez. Really if they make the playoffs I like Vazquez, Jair, and Hanson against anyone else’s top three. I like Kawakami, think he was pitching well before the ball to the neck, then sucked the next outing. People are def getting picky when he gets berated for 1 run in 5 innings. He’s the fifth starter, I’ll take it. That leaves Lowe. He was needed in the beginning of the season but I would LOVE to see a starting pitching depraved team that doesn’t want or have what it takes to get a Halladay or Lee trade one upper tier prospect for Lowe. Seriously sounds plausible for a team needing a push. If not him and Kawakami out of the pen in the playoffs, and one of them possibly during the season depending on Huddy and things are looking solid there.
They need a bat obviously. Anderson is coming around and hopefully its not just a hot streak but something thats consistent the rest of the season. Since RF is so iffy another OF would be perfect so Anderson can rest, Church can play CF at times, it really is a perfect 5 person OF if they get a quailty guy. 1B is a glaring power weakness but if we get the OF Kotchman batting 8th is pretty solid. If I’m right he’s on a one year contract as a stop gap until ‘11 for freeman.
So many possibilities and I think based off history it’s more believable they will pull off a trade when the rumors are quiet. The McLouth and Church things were done quickly and quietly, just like the Braves of old.
Lastly, speaking of the Braves of old, the first three games of that Giants series was like the old Braves. Seriously beautiful baseball to watch!
Thanks for the new Blog, Ms. Rogers!
Roman Gal We’re both RSF fans, after all…
Very true. But how could anyone not like him?
Um…”How Do I Not Love Thee? Let Me Count the Ways…”
Who is Schafer’s Brayan Pena? Oh God, don’t tell me it was Brooks Conrad…
Wayne in Utah
July 24th, 20093:56 pm
RSF for Konerko….if the Sox threw in Dye and a middle reliever to boot.
Are you familiar with the concept: “Correlation doesn’t imply causation”?
July 24th, 20093:57 pm
It’s just a matter time. Don’t fight it!!
Any chance the Braves only brought up Kelly to showcase him for a trade? Not that there’s anything to showcase, but still…
nothing on any chisox blogs or fan forums about anything with the braves, other then Braves scouts being at their game a few times.
Anybody on here in favor of dumping Norton for Kotsay?
Wasn’t Frenchy Mac’s Brayan Pena?
July 24th, 20093:58 pm
Only if Norton ain’t somebody’s Brayan Pena?
fleming (July 24th, 2009 11:58 am, p 20), Bay Area Steve (July 24th, 2009 1:50 pm, p 21) –
But I gotta apologize — I had no cause to personally demean nrtnscks like I did. It did nothing to elevate the discourse, and diminishes my own credibility.
Sorry, nrtnscks — my bad. I was out of line.
July 24th, 20093:59 pm
Here’s how rumors like the Konerko one get started. A blogger has a fairly decent speculative trade idea. He posts it on a blog. A radio station with no credibility that will read anything that gets printed on the internet report that a blogger said it. Someone else writes that the radio station reported it. Another radio station reports that someone wrote that a radio station reported it. Pretty soon, you have a full-fledged meaningless rumor. That’s why accountability exists and we don’t pay attention to those who aren’t accountable to anyone.
My Brayan Pena is Paul.
Speaking of Chipper’s “topspin” problems from the left side….I think there is ONE player playing today that may be the best…well…what I call “spinners” (putting backspin on the ball when he hits it) I have EVER seen…and I’ve seen a bunch…
July 24th, 20094:01 pm
It’s Just a Matter of Time
I am willing to bet everyone in here will take Kotsay over Norton.
Does Brayan Pena have a Brayan Pena?
Wayne–I must have missed this conversation, but you’re not really Paul, are you?
July 24th, 20094:02 pm
Who is Schafer’s Brayan Pena?
I just happened to catch my first episode of That 70’s Show in quite awhile last night.
Hyde’s hiding a bag of pot behind his back
Kitty: Hyde….what’s in the bag?
Kelso: The Packers going to the Super Bowl, THAT’S what’s in the bag!

Agree with Alabama…DUMP Norton for Kotsay
whats-his-name has nothing I am interested in…including baseball skills
McLouth of the South
Tonight at 11…
Local man committed after neighbors found him walking the streets in his underwear repeating the same nonsense over and over, “KJ, Norton, and Francoeur suck! Bloggers are MORONS, I was RIGHT!” No one knows exactly what caused this phenomenon or why he refused to let go of his peter as he walked. Tune in tonight for the sordid details…
I’d take Kotex over Norton, and I’m a guy…
Since I “retired” Paul this morning, have you seen him since???
July 24th, 20094:05 pm
…including baseball skills
Ok. Now you’re just making stuff up…
July 24th, 20094:06 pm
Gary Sheffield MAY have the worst “knuckleball” swing I’ve ever seen…hate to think how many HRs he’d have if he could “spin” the ball….
After reading the blog I had a thought – say we were still in contention last year and we didn’t trade Tex. Who would be playing first base for us now?? We wouldn’t have Kotch, there was no one in the farm system that we knew was ready, and we didn’t know Prado was capable of being an every day player yet (well, some of us didn’t. There are some geniuses here who’ve claimed to have been 100% sure all along).
You don’t think….Greg Norton would’ve been our opening day first baseman do you?
Hey Wayne, we haven’t seen willieg in a while either….. Hmmmmmmmm
I still think Paul is on the old blog, plugging away…
McLouth is onto something….(I am blogging from jail)
There should be a poll up – is it cooler to run into Kelso, or Klesko
July 24th, 20094:07 pm
I love Mark Kotsay, however the last thing we need is another left handed bat…
I would never…if your boy is so good why’s he still in single A?
Wayne in Utah – Since I “retired” Paul this morning, have you seen him since???
Unfortunately end of last blog
… but I don’t want Kotsay, either.
I thought you were willieg???
Someday, Someway You’ll realise that you’ve been blind
Oh mann…that was cold…
July 24th, 20094:08 pm
What happened to the beer that made Milwaukee famous?
cabravesfan I love Mark Kotsay, however the last thing we need is another left handed bat…
I feel the same way.
July 24th, 20094:09 pm
Steve from OH,
You know the Braves system pretty well. What kind of package would the Braves have needed to put together to match what the Cards offered for Holliday? Freeman plus … ??
July 24th, 20094:10 pm
To a fellow Dookie….just when you thought we had a realistic shot at a final four next year..Elliot Williams transfers..hopefully the younger Curry will help fill some of the void next year along with some highly recruited talent (I doubt Kyle will stay past this year).
Can Kotsay bat cleanup
Carroll- Sure like the title. Think I will. Its 5 oclock somewhere.
Lew………concerning your 10:13am posting, I cant speak for others……….however I have repeatedly stated that while I opposed the Brooks Conrad demotion……that single move “in itself” isnt going to doom the Braves season.
However, what that move “did signal” was a SNEAK PREVIEW of what lies ahead (roster moves that will be coming up in the next few weeks that the Braves have to make). For instance, both Jeff Bennett and Buddy Carlyle will be soon coming off the DL. They will both be activated and rejoin Peter Moylan as pitchers Bobby Cox will “use’ in the 6th and 7th innings in crucial situations.
I feel that Peter Moylan, Jeff Bennett, and Buddy Carlyle do not need to be pitching for the Braves. They are not dependable nor consistent. In crucial situations, more times than not, they will be rocked. Check their stats. Remember their meltdowns that have cost the Braves a number of games.
What began with Greg Norton being added to the Braves roster right before the All-Star Break in Colorado (while demoting a speedy pinch running option and bunter in Gregor Blanco)……..and continued after the All-Star Break with Greg Norton (5 for 46 thus far in the season) being given important pinch hitting at-bats over Brooks Conrad (11 for 32, batting .344 with 1 double, 2 triples, and 2 homers). Last Saturday’s game against the Mets where Norton struck out on two fastballs down the middle with the bases loaded and 2 outs with the Mets up 2-1……sealed the fate on Greg Norton, in my opinion. Yet the powers that be disagree with me.
And yesterday morning, when I woke up, I read that Kelly Johnson was promoted and Brooks Conrad was demoted. As I said yesterday, while I not a fan of Kelly Johnson’s ability to hit, I do feel that he can contribute more than Greg Norton. However, not at the expense of Brooks Conrad, who has PROVED to be a valued bat off the bench in his limited time with Atlanta. Dude is a hot hand, you rid that horse until he slows down. You dont jump on a horse (Greg Norton) who has yet to start running all year long.
I think that the scouting report on a hot Braves player (who isnt one of “Bobby’s boys”) is to wait for Bobby to bench them, so he can give one of “his boys” at-bats to “get them going”. When the Chicago series right before the All-Star Break started, Matt Diaz was in a 13 for 26 stretch. Does Bobby continue to start Diaz over Francoeur? Of course not, he inserts “his boy’ Jeff Francoeur back in right field in order to “get him going”. No wondered Diaz cooled off during the Colorado series.
Brooks Conrad was 11 for 32 with 5 extra base hits since his call-up…….yet who does Bobby Cox start using as his valued pinch hitter off the bench after the All-Star Break? Greg “Mr. 5 for 46″ Norton. No wonder Conrad was 0 for 1 in the 7 games after the All-Star Break (he did have 1 walk in his other pinch hitting appearance) before he was demoted yesterday……..he cooled off because he didnt get a chance to play.
Only Bobby Cox can cool a hot player by not playing him (especially if the hot player is trying to take playing time from one of his “boys”). So Bobby sits them for a week (so a BUM like Greg Norton can get valued pinch hitting at-bats). And then he has the nerve to say to the reporters “I had a tough decision to make yesterday”. TOUGH?: What was SO FREAKING TOUGH about yesterday’s decision? If was a NO BRAINER. Greg Norton is a BUM.
Some of you really have no idea what lies ahead in the next couple of weeks. Some of the coming moves are going to accelerate the “ship is sinking” process. YOU CAN BANK ON IT. All you have to do is look at what has happened in the recent moves. Just because the Braves have won 6 of the past 8 (we should have won all 8 if Bobby had pushed the right buttons)……does not mean that the Braves will continue playing that way, especially given the effect of what the moves recently made, coupled with the moves that are soon going to be made.
I stand behind my statement last night that “Our season is over it”.
Did I see a Paul Lentz sighting on the old blog? Get’um going Paul! Ole blog kind of boring right now!
July 24th, 20094:11 pm
I know what a left-handed glove looks like, but a left-handed bat? Kotsay uses one you say?
fleming……………concerning you 12:15pm posting comparing Jimmy Rollins’ first half struggles to Kelly Johnson’s leaves out a few “differences”.
First Rollins is a Gold Glove winning, former “recent” MVP who was a key clog on the Phillies World Championship team last year. Rollins has put up some “consistent” numbers from 2004-2008. It is that kind of “excellent” track record, over a period of 5 STRAIGHT YEARS, that warranted Charlie Manuel to be patient with Rollins. Since the Braves swept the Phillies a few weeks back, Rollins has started to “pick up the pace”.
Kelly Johnson plays inferior defense at second. Plus he isnt the “base stealer” that Rollins is. Plus he doesnt have the “body of work” (ok, so Kelly had a decent 2007-2008). Jeff Fancoeur had a decent 2006-2007 and we all know what happened to him.
I “understand” what some on here were trying to do with the Kelly-Rollins comparison. However, Rollins is a MUCH BETTER PLAYER than Kelly will ever be.
I’m looking forward to getting into tonight’s game.
Right on cue!
cabravesfan, they’re giving the guys at AA time to improve before they promote Renee Jasper-Flusterburg. They don’t wanna demoralize the AA guys…
OK, which one of you conjured our dear friend up from parts unknown? It was such a nice day…
We can always count on Carroll Rogers to put something other than a bunch of stats in her blog. Thanks!
July 24th, 20094:12 pm
That must be an imposter, since I am Paul. Can’t you tell??
I know we all have good memories of Mark Kotsay, but the man’s playing horribly. He’s got 5 RBIs and is slugging .324. If we would’ve been watching that all season we’d be calling for him to get the ol’ Jeff Francoeur Special.
He’s was just drafted this year. And I have no idea why he isn’t in Rome yet…maybe they’re just waiting for me to get there so he’ll have someone to show him around Rome when he gets there.
Nah, Wayne might have been “Fake Paul Lentz” last night for a while but Wayne has a job. Paul Lentz is out of High School for summer vacation.
July 24th, 20094:13 pm
Hmm…I don’t know. Well, only one way to find out!
or maybe they just want to keep the laughter to a minimum? You know kids these days…so sensitive. Wouldn’t want to hurt Rainbow Justa-Wasteofspace’s feelings…
That’s a 10 paragrapher from Paul Lentz. Whew…
YOUR RIGHT WAYNE IM WILLIEG AND WHERE DID YOU FIND TIME TO WRITE THAT PAUL LENTZ POST!?
Paul Lentz – concerning you 12:15pm posting comparing Jimmy Rollins’ first half struggles to Kelly Johnson’s leaves out a few “differences”.
Yes but the comparison was based on short term stats which seem to be a favorite of yours
Lentz posted that on the other blog too. get a life man.
July 24th, 20094:14 pm
“Rollins is a Gold Glove winning, former recent MVP who was a key clog on the Phillies World Championship team last year.”
I imagine J-Roll does some dancin’, but he ain’t no clogger
July 24th, 20094:15 pm
Wayne in Utah – That must be an imposter, since I am Paul. Can’t you tell??
Maybe Wayne in Utah is the impostor.
Paul Lentz….you’re all MORONS!! I am always RIGHT…ALWAYS!! I started the FRANK Wren Bandwagon!!! I DID it!! MORONS
July 24th, 20094:16 pm
I just wanted to sum up what paul will say for the rest of the day.
Piedmont, if we wanna go prospect-by-prospect, Wallace is pretty comparable to Freeman (corner IF w/bat), the Mortensen kid is a sinker/slider righty that has started but is probably a reliever long-term from what I’ve gathered, so it’s Medlen if you want to stick to comparing him to guys on his developmental level, and Cordier/Lyman if you want younger cats. The other guy, Petersen, is a projectable corner OF, which we don’t really have…I’d say a Luis Sumoza type player.
In terms of value, it’s probably Freeman/Rohrbough/Sumoza (like Efrim pointed out). The last spot can be pretty interchangeable since we don’t have much position depth at Rome or Myrtle…
njbraves……….the recent moves are an indication of what lies ahead with other roster moves that will be made in the next few weeks. If you cant see how potentially destructive the up coming moves will be to the Braves chances to make a move……..then I dont know what to tell you. Frank Wren caving in to Bobby’s desire to get “his boys” back is “writing on the wall” to what is going to happen next. You can BANK ON IT.
Pretty sure Paul beat Carroll in words today
July 24th, 20094:17 pm
First Rollins is a Gold Glove winning, former “recent” MVP who was a key clog
I think you mean cog. A clog is a Dutch show
“”Lentz posted that on the other blog too. get a life man.”"
I failed to realize this. Wonder if not reading either one had anything to do with it?
