FYI, Peter Gammons stated on XM MLB Home Plate this morning that he still thinks Braves will trade Vasquez before the deadline. He didn’t speculate on possible destinations though.
So long as you want to blame BC for everything short of global warming, I think we have less in common than you might think.
I can understand how a young person might not like BC’s way of doing things. Somebody who hasn’t observed him over the years. The man has a plan. You might not like the plan, but I really don’t think he cares.
So, it gives me some comfort to know that we really disagree more than we agree.
You better think again. This late in the season, a team pitches a shutout and the ERA drops very little, not sure how much, but something like 0.03. Same goes for BA. You get a 7 hit night and you BA will only go up 0.001 or 0.002 at the most.
Dude came up and ignited the Braves to a couple wins. He plays hard and seems to be equipped to hit MLB pitching. He hasn’t played much recently because of Prado’s consistent ways. You can’t argue his impact on the team, regardless of his 32 AB’s. How many does Norton have? How has he impacted the team?
I’m not trying to beat a dead horse on such a small move made by Wren and Bobby. But I just think the kid deserved a longer stay to continue his role with the team. I guess even with Kelly coming back he would have had even less AB’s. It just seems he would be a better option off the bench than Norton at this time.
Another in a long string of BC illogical moves. Leaves most fans mystified and perplexed. The better hitter/player gets sent down and the guy hitting under.200 stays? Both are switch-hitters, so where is the resaoning? OH yeh, Norton hit well last year. Another example of BC again dwelling in the past.
Vasquez to the Yanks. I’ve been saying it for weeks. I’m sticking to my story. They need pitching. Wang is cooked, Pettitte’s old and Joba’s over rated.
I would agree with Curtis Jones on 9 out of 10 points. I wouldn’t mess with McLouth at leadoff. I think he’ll catch fire eventually, and we don’t have anyone better, not now anyway.
I’ll add one more, for those interested in making the playoffs. Garret Anderson will cost us some more games with his terrible defense. No range, no hustle, and a terrible arm. Did anyone see his pitiful throw to third base a few days ago? A middle schooler could have made an accurate throw from 75 feet and he almost put it in the dugout. He’s a DH playing in the National League. I hope his bat stays hot, but he will cost us some games with his defense.
About those reason………Im pretty sure Cox and all the executives have been watching the same games we have. Of course they have not missed the fact that Norton zox and that Conrad has been rock solid. They might have some intentions. They are not against our braves. So they must be planning something that is beyond our understanding (wow I even sound philosophical there). Lets just hope this doesnt affects our V (for victory).
Lew, LOL. Probably could have walked, though. When’s the guy going to learn to work the count?
Prado, Escobar, Hernandez, Johnson all now on the roster and people are complaining about not keeping another middle IF? I’m not exactly a Norton fan, but Conrad off the bench late doesn’t exactly jump my jets, either. Hard for me to get worked up either way, frankly.
Regarding Norton – he’s had 45 at bats this year. 45! That’s about 3 at-bats per week on average. Not exactly a lot of time to get into a groove.
He’s 1 for 4 since returning from the DL, and a couple of his outs were hit hard. He’s shown progress from the beginning of the year, and when he’s going good, he’s one of the best PH’s in the game. And a PH is all that spot is going to be anyway.
So why not give him a little more of a leash? See if he can become a feared pinch-hitter again. And if not, Conrad’s only 30 miles away…
If you do it the other way around, release Norton – well, then he’s gone for good. Maybe he picks up with the Rockies and hits like he’s capable. Maybe pitchers get a scouting report on Conrad and he can’t keep up the pace. Then the Braves have to scramble to find someone else for that spot. This way they get two chances.
I think trading Vasquez is not a good idea. Last year we craved having depth with our starting pitching. Injuries killed us. This year we are blessed with strong starting pitching depth. I don’t see a serious need for this team other than bolstering the bullpen. My opinion may have been different a few weeks ago, but we are beginning to see what Wren saw when he constructed the majority of this lineup over the past few months. A team capable of putting up runs and a team capable of giving us many quality starts.
Let’s not hit the panic button about sending Conrad down. Prado is still the everyday 2B and neither Norton nor Conrad get much playing time anyways. We have better things to do besides worrying about the last couple of guys off the bench.
Demoting Conrad, who hit in EVERY start that he got, is a total joke! Norton is still here but Conrad must go?! That’s stupid, we cannot afford to lose games and Conrad has been clutch.
Now watch us lose a game today (or in one of coming games) with Norton or KJ choking (or possibly both)…
Yeah=Conrad was such a threat opposing managers were wetting their pants in anticipation of him coming up, I’m sure. Come on people-this isn’t even a tempest in a teapot. Neither Conrad nor Norton were going to see appreciable plate appearances-especially with a Diaz/Church platoon in right and Kelly coming back to the bigs.
Let’s move on to something that actually has meaning. I’m sure that shouldn’t be so hard with how well the Braves have been playing-the pitchers pitching, the hitters hitting, the pen rested and the team winning.
I realize with this success it’s harder to find anything to bitch about, so how about NOT bitching and maybe just enjoy yourselves for a change? I know you can do it if you just try. Well, maybe MFin04, Jeff321, Doc Holliday and a few others might go up in smoke at the first signs of a positive thought, but most of you could do it.
Looks like Capt Cavey’s insider was wrong..but then we all thought it would be Norton. I hope we’re also wrong about Bobby working Kelly back into a platoon at 2B…
Wayne- I agree that there are overreactions with Bobby Cox and his managing, but to discount some things, like bad use of the bullpen, pitching guys in games that he shouldn’t, bringing in the wrong guys, consistently playing guys like Frenchy, KJ, and Norton. Those are all on the manager.
Yes those guys are supposed to make plays, but after consistently seeing them fail, you don’t keep throwing them out there. You give other guys a shot, Bobby took months before he made any real changes, and we lost games because of it.
Bobby Cox is responsible for some of the teams failures and successes. Not all, but some. That is realistic. Also, if he is going to get credit for bad moves, he should get credit for good moves. If he is going to get slammed for playing KJ, he should get props for playing Prado., etc.
In keeping Norton, only thing I can think of is that they want more than a 1 hit per $100K paid, so Conrad had to be the sacrificial lamb. (When Norton and KJ go 0-fer the next two weeks, he’ll be back.) Let’s see how the team does against Brewers, FLA and LA before we start thinking about post-seaon play.
Bobby said he thought about the decision all night, said it was difficult to send Conrad down. But this way, they keep everybody (Norton out of options, etc) and have a good defensive SS backup (Diory) and a veteran pinch-hitter (Norton).
I love to see Conrad play. I was hoping he would be rewarded for his hits, and his hustle. I guess Bobby noticed he was over his goal of .500 and freaked out.
On the other hand, when Kotchman, Kelly or Norton come to the plate, I usually take a break, heading to the fridge or the bathroom. I know I’m not going to miss anything interesting.
I beg to differ sir. Who in their right mind wants Norton pinch hitting with the game on the line? (BC evidently)We have already seen several failed attempts by Norton, why do we need to see any more? THere has to be a point where when someone is poking you in the eye with a sharp stick that you say, “Stop!!”
you are all crying about a pinch hitter. 1 AB in the game. If the Braves are really relying on 1 AB late in a game from a pinch hitter, they have wasted other opportunities throughout the rest of the game.
Not sure if anyone has gone over this yet but when is .411 Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg going to get promoted? I don’t even understand why this college player is in a short season rookie league in the place. Often times, these players are more advanced and should be placed in higher leagues. I’ve seen some start out in AA. Why is he in a rookie league and after batting .411 in 100+ ABs why hasn’t he been promoted yet???
Maybe, just maybe Frank Wren took into consideration that Norton has displayed in the past that he is a clutch Pinch Hitter – a very valuable commodity in a Pennant Race. I know Conrad has had a good couple of weeks but he is a 12 year minor league player that had 19 at bats in his twelve year career and was released last year after that by Oakland. Some of you people just don’t seem to be able to comprehend that MLB players are not judged on what happens in two or three weeks.
Lew – I agree, I haven’t been whining on here much at all, because the team is playing great and playing how they should. They actually are hitting sac flys, getting runners over, stealing bases (thataboy Chipper Jones), and everyone is hitting where they should be in the order, give or take a spot or two.
This team has been exciting to watch ever since getting back from the All-Star break, and it’s good to be a Braves fan. I actually look forward to watching the games now and go into games thinking we can actually pitch well AND hit well. These are fun times!
I’m surprised by the move, but it’s not totally bad. Conrad can get his playing time on and Norton will get a few more shots at showing he can still hit. I agree that Conrad provides a spark, but I wouldn’t be excited about having either of them pinch hitting with the game on the line. In the grand scheme of things, this move will have a minimal impact on the season.
In case you guys haven’t heard and care: Braves radio games moving again next year, to 100.5 on FM and 680 the Fan on AM. Those will be the new flagship stations of the 150-station network.
Just throwing that out there that some surprise teams have called in about Halladay. Clearly we don’t seem to be a suitor. But you can’t say it wouldn’t be awesome if we did acquire him, and not lose Jair or Tommy. Then again if we did do that, the Blue Jays GM might as well resign immediately and flee the continent in case charges are brought against him.
Roamn Gal-First of all, Gammons hasn’t been right on much of anything for several years now.
Second, Wren has stated that they won’t be trading pitching and won’t take on salary, so a big move is NOT likely.
Third, we have no one to put into Vazquez’s spot in the rotation. Medlen isn’t stretched out and is inexperienced and Hudson coming back not even a year removed from surgery is so iffy that no one but some of our resident Lunatics would even suggest it.
Rest easy- Javy is going nowhere and we don’t need that big bat anyway now that Prado, Church and McLouth are in the lineup and the team is hitting.
A technical question on KJ. After his DL stint, did we have to activate him to the majors or could we have left him for the balance of the year at AAA without having to put him on waivers etc etc
Ok, so Norton was out of options. Did they really think he wouldn’t clear waivers? and so what if he didn’t? It’s not like we’d be losing some young prospect.
Good grief, the Braves are hitting .300 as a team; not going to be many games where a pinch-hit appearance is going to mean much more than diddley when you’re raking like that, LOL.
Conrad got his chance, and made the most of it. Our bench could be the best in the league, but it has a humongous hole in Greg Norton. They were basically picking between Norton and Conrad, I guess. They are both switch hitters. It’s simple Brooks can hit, Norton can’t. Brooks can play good defense, Norton can’t.
good post and I agree to an extent. But Frenchy also had a season and a half of playing like a superstar. In sports, a lot of what you do is based on a combination of your past performances and what have you done for me lately. Most fans look at the latter as the most important. I would tend to agree both need to be considered, but when we are looking at this side of it, it’s hard not to feel for a guy like Conrad who has helped positively over the past couple weeks.
Before the sweep is completed…………..heres to ya!!!!!!!
“Bobby said he thought about the decision all night” – DOB
Right there………….there is the genesis of all sins and our problems…………Cox thinks = we are screwed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dont “think” old man, that is what killing us………..let Wren or someone else do the thinking, you just sit out there in the dogout and keep yelling………”come on kid” “come on chip” “come on matt”.
I don’t like the idea of trading Vazquez but we do have one too many starters next year.
Lowe, JJ, KK, Vazquez, Hanson, Hudson. If Hudson got back to where he was he’d be worth the contract the Braves would sign him to. I suppose one of the arms could go to the bullpen and be a closer. But it’s still a lot of money wrapped up in pitching. Maybe too much. Just a thought?
Brooks Conrad impressed me a lot. All I care about is performance when it counts. Guy busted his gut at the plate, on the base-paths and in the field. Shame he has to go back
I wouldn’t mind seeing Vazquez traded. He’s a great pitcher yes. But unlike what some people on this blog seem to think, he has a lot more trade value than all of our garbage bundled together. I think we can get a top-of-the-line prospect (or a good bat/reliever) for him.
And with Hudson on the horizon and My Little Pony sitting around in the bullpen, the rotation wouldn’t miss too much of a beat. We already have 7 starters signed for next year (counting Medlen as a starter and assuming you take Huddy’s option). Why not trade one when you can get maximum value for him?
monty – i’d trust that Javy would be staying a Brave more if Buster Olney said it. Just like his report about how the Braves were interested in Brad Penny.
So those decisions are ultimately Bobby’s? Huh. I always thought the GM had the final, final word.
$100 says we see KJ at 2B before the weekend is over. If we win that game anyway, no harm, way to go KJ! If we lose it and he goes 0-fer, I’m raising hell.
My last vision of Norton was swinging and missing 3 fastballs right down the middle at 90mph. I’m not Einstein but I can’t imagine Conrad doing that from what I’ve seen of him. I thought the goal was to field a team with the best players possible. I guess it isn’t. It cost us the game last week with the Mets but Oh I guess it doesn’t count because it was only 1 at bat. Great logic there.
Kris Medlen, Brian McCann, and Tommy Hanson are the players on the Gwinnett Braves Banner on their website…newsflash, they don’t play there anymore. And Brian McCann, lol, wasn’t he there for like 3 at bats?
Of course Conrad being demoted is not huge in the grand scheme of things. However, a team is only good as their weakest player and that is Norton this year. For me if Bobby was left with Norton or Conrad for a game on the line pinch hit appearance, I want Conrad.
monty-My suggestion to you is Fantasy Baseball. Like the ad says “They’re just like your summer family-family you can send down after an 0-4 game.” Dude, it IS much ADO about nothing. Conrad has not been imprisoned or put to death. He has not been sent to a competitor or put on waivers. He’s half an hour away in Gwinnett. He wasn’t even being used much while he was here.
When Infante returns, Norton will likely be DFAed and even were Conrad still on the team, he would likely be sent down THEN, anyway. Have no fear- Conrad will be back even if it’s in September.
I repeat-you’re debating three at bats a week max and with KJ up to bat LH in PH situations, and now that we have a true RF platoon with the other man from the platoon offering a R-L combo off the bench, Norton and the pinch hitting role takes on considerably less importance. I repeat. NO BIg Deal. Worry about something of significance or go become the fan of a team who does everything the way you think it should be done-like I said A Fantasy Team. No ML team will give you all you desire at all times. Damn. Still one more thing in life to rail about.
monty – yeh Norton didn’t hit a fastball down the middle, on a 3-1 or 3-2 count with the bases loaded. He sure did try pretty hard though. That counts for something.
monty – what if you spent roughly $400 to see that vision? When we loaded up the bases everyone in the ted – 51,000 strong – was on their feet. I was on my tiptoes and craning my neck trying to see who was in the on deck circle, when I saw Norton my heart fell. But then the mets went to their pen and Norton headed back to the step and I allowed a glimmer of hope to seep in but then whoever it was started trotting out from the mets pen and Norton went back out. Bases loaded. 2 Outs. Mets up by 1. Greg Norton and his bingo batting average at the plate? FML.
Vazquez isn’t getting traded unless the Braves lose their next 7 games. And even if that happens, why are you trading your strikeout leader when you have him under contract for next season? Because you’re positive Tim Hudson is going to come back strong from Tommy John before he has even pitched a major league game? Not happening. Perhaps Javy is traded this winter, I can see that. He has the most trade value of anyone on the team(except McCann, Jurrjens, Hanson and Heyward, Escobar of course). But that type of trade isn’t happening even if the Braves lose their remaining games up until the trade deadline. Gammons probably thinks the Braves are out of it. He is an idiot.
How in the world can you keep Norton on your team what a waste of space yeah a veteran hitter that doesnt hit poor excuse booby now we have two players in Norton and Kelly who cant hit and sent down a player who was delivering i just dont understand.
Sorry about last weekend and the 400 smackaroos, but Lew says “you just need to get over it, that a couple of pinch hitting opportunities a week isn’t worth fussing about!!” LOL!

Guys,
By the middle of August this move will have little to no importance. When Infante comes back you are looking at this bench:
LH – Church, KJ, Norton
RH – Diaz, Infante, Ross, Norton
Norton is going to be the LAST guy up to the plate with that bench, and Conrad will be back in September anyways. Really not a huge deal.

My last vision of Norton was swinging and missing 3 fastballs right down the middle at 90mph. I’m not Einstein but I can’t imagine Conrad doing that from what I’ve seen of him. I thought the goal was to field a team with the best players possible. I guess it isn’t. It cost us the game last week with the Mets but Oh I guess it doesn’t count because it was only 1 at bat. Great logic there.

monty-My suggestion to you is Fantasy Baseball.
