I’m so glad to hear that Escobar is coming around off the field (as well as on the diamond). This will hopefully silence those who feel Escobar should be traded. I’m just glad the Peavy deal with the Padres never happened last winter.
Not a single word about the Braves beating the heck out of Lincecum… go figure… If he had shutout the Braves, it would had been all over the site. They dont even mention his Ks, haha!
Regarding KJ, I’m glad to hear that he accepted his time in Gwinnett in a professional manner (unlike our former RF last year). Bowman made a good point that KJ can play 2B if Prado is needed at 1B or 3B, and I don’t think any tears will be shed if Norton is released to make room for KJ.
DOB, Nice work on the great post-game commentary from JJ and Yunel! Glad the lines of communication between you guys and Esco are wide open. Hope the fist bumps soon follow.
I just read Yunel’s quote in one of the SF beat writers stories. A crowd around his locker tonight, eh? Love it. Can’t wait for him to make his money and, eventually, get his accolades. He deserves it.
Oh and I read the SF article looking for a tip of the cap to JJ, lol not quite but pretty close –
If the Braves plan to activate Kelly Johnson when his rehab stint expires Saturday, it would seem to make more sense to do it before they leave for Florida tomorrow night: He’s hit .329 with four homers and 17 RBI in 25 games at the stadium once known as Joe Robbie, with a .424 OBP and .989 OPS.
No sense waiting to fly him down there Saturday if they’re going to do it. Makes more sense to either activate him tomorrow or option him to Gwinnett on Saturday.
If they do bring back Kelly, I still think we’ll see Conrad stick with the team. He’s been too valuable to send back to Triple-A.
How about another quality start for KK (2 runs or less) and we just pound Zito and put a big “!” on the end of this series.
*Pirates setting them up, Braves knocking them down: Before the Braves played them, the Bucs took 2-3 from the Giants (SF scored 5 runs that series) and today they just got done doing the same thing to the Brew Crew (Brews scored 14 runs but still lost the series 2-3)
Roja………….with his 0 for 4 tonight, Francoeur’s .364 dropped to .324. Also, he has yet to draw a walk since his trade to the Mets in 37 at-bats. In fact, Francoeur hasnt drawn a walk in his last 95 at-bats.
I guess that Francoeur is working on starting his Mets career the same way he started with his Braves career (seeing if he can bat .400 in his first 100 at-bats without drawing a walk, lol).
Walking around Turner tonight and noticed in the early 1970’s group pictures there is a tiny little man (midget is not the correct saying anymore). He is sitting on a tractor in one of the pictures. Odd.
Anyone know who this little guy was and his role on the Braves?
All I can say is Hell Ya! Wish I could have watched the game but with the way the Braves are playing, it is helping me stay in a good mood all day at work!
C’mon guys get off Frenchy, to me its becoming clear alot of his problem was the hometown pressure. Just like I said last night he’s a local boy and thats alot of pressure and then you’ve constantly got people on here putting him down. Dont you think he probably has family and friends read the insulting bs thats put on here and then relays it to him. He’s playing very well in NY and I say congrats to him. A player doesnt deserve the kind of hate filled venom tha some spew on here unless their not hustling and not trying. Noone can ever say he was’nt trying. He always seemed to give 100% and as a fan thats all we should ever ask. Once again he’s not superhuman and he has feelings. I guess what I’m saying is he’s a good possibly great person so let it go and at least act like you have some human compassion.
One slight correction DOB to your 11:24 post, the Braves are leaving tomorrow for Milwaukee, they play the Brewers this weekend, Florida is the second leg of the trip starting Tuesday
deano54……….to answer your question in your 9:52pm posting………I know that Jeff Francoeur will NEVER be a 30 homer, 100 RBI kind of guy. Dude has hit 6 homers in 341 at-bats.
What is going to end up happening is that Jeff Francoeur could very well end up getting 80-90 RBIs this year, especially if the Mets have him bat clean-up. Reason being, the opposing team will just walk David Wright pretty much every time up, and take their chances with Jeff Francoeur. Most of the time he will fail. However, if he get to bat 600 times this year, he will end up with one of the UGLIEST 80-90 RBIs in MLB history. Because the Mets have been decimated with injuries, they pretty much have no choice but to bat Francoeur clean-up (which is pretty sad, lol).
And then when the Mets get fooled into offering him salary arbitration……he will end up getting $6-7 mil (because his numbers will dictate that he get paid like that). And then when the Mets get Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran, and Carlos Delgado back, they will find out how good Jeff Francoeur really is when he slides back down the the 7th or 8th hole in the line-up.
Not only will Francoeur eat up a nice chunk of the Mets payroll next year………but he will be an easy out when we face him 18 times a year because we will NEVER FORGET how to pitch him. I call that a QUADRUPLE BONUS (us getting rid of him…….getting a decent player in return………..having him help stall the Mets offense…….and finally eating up a chunk of their payroll dollars).
Coors Field for someone’s high ERA, but they refuse to turn the argument on its’ head and acknowledge that parks can inflate numbers. Fenway Park drastically inflates Bay’s numbers. (PWHjort)
where have you been the last 20 years. Everybody blames Coors for hitters offensive inflation there. Holliday etc etc etc. You managed to miss all that huh? Sheeesh.
Bird,
He would get every ounce of compassion I have if he hadn’t whined and moaned and felt “betrayed” by being sent down to the minors last year. I think that’s when he lost a lot of us. Instead of owning up to his subpar play and saying something like, “It hurts. But I understand the decision. I’m going to go down there, work, and try to come back to Atlanta better than ever.”
He said he felt betrayed and acted like a spoiled kid who had never struggled at anything. Ever — which, in actuality, he probably hadn’t. Adversity slapped him in the face and he didn’t handle it well. At all.
We all wanted him to be a superstar. I know I did. I still have my SI. I was there the night of his debut and it was one of the coolest sporting moments of my life. But that’s all it was. A moment. And sadly, he never lived up to what we all thought he was going to be. Or what he thought it was going to be.
Just got back from the game. My son wanted to try to get some autographs at the player lot and got to talk to some of the players. Yunel was in a very good mood joking with some of the fans. He stayed and signed alot of autographs. Martin, Diory and Gonzalez all stopped and talked while signing. If you know of two better pro athletetes with the fans than Martin and Gonzalez I sure would like to meet them.
Was right behind home plate when Yunel hit his HR. It was crushed. Fun game.
cabravesfan – I suspect you have turned in since it’s so late out there – I’ll be back to the blog halfway through the game tomorrow afternoon – I’ll rely on you to keep me updated before that (not sure how – I’ll think of something).
What a gem. JJJ was awesome to say the least and Kotchman is getting better with time for us. Yunel cant get enough praise and Chipper stole a base followed by McCann’s RBI single? That’s just the Braves at their best.
jeffrey d………..I heard that “willieg” has been panhandling “street sheets” trying to make rent money. The Braves winning and the Mets losing killed whatever bankroll he had, lol.
The G-Braves allowed a run in the first inning, but came back with two in the second on back-to-back two-out doubles by Reid Gorecki and Chris Burke. Kelly Johnson, who was 0-for-5 and made an error, ended the threat with a strikeout.
birddawgbill………..Brian McCann is a hometown boy as well. I dont see the pressure getting to him. Not only does he play the most demanding position on the field……..but he is also a 4 TIME ALL STAR.
So your hometown hero pressure theory doesnt wash. Just wait until the Francoeur novelty wears off (a few more 0 for 4’s will do the trick). I’m curious as to how he handles all the “love” that the N.Y. Press will have for him, lol.
I’m anxious to see the Braves fatten up their offensive stats even more by feasting on Barry Zito tomorrow afternoon. This is a MUST WIN because it SHOULD be a win. Losing to a bum like Zito would not be easy to take, considering he is the worse pitcher that we will have faced this series.
Talk about falling on had times. The Giants have to pay him $18 mil a year for 4 more years after this. Doesnt Kawakami seem like a “bargain” compared to that?
so andy marte, remember him, netted us edgar renteria (red sox payed a chunk of his salary when he was wth us) who in turn got us jj and gorkys. gorkys got us nate.
so marte the uber prospect got us nate and jj. what a great trade.
glord – Yunel stayed to sign autographs? That’s great! I’ve hanged out at the players’ lot a few times, but the only people who came out were Paul Byrd and Armando Almanza. whooo!
Chillidog75 – No Diory seems like a really nice kid. He has signed for the fans after games before and is pretty cool. My son loves going out these to see the players after the game and has got to meet many of them. Yunel has signed before but tonight really went out of his way for the fans. It was pretty neat. You could tell he was in a great mood.
All I am saying about Martin and Mike is that they are unbelievable with the fans. I have never seen Gonzo turn down an autograph request and is very talkative with the fans after the games. Martin is fantastic as well. I have had a chance to speak with both with my son there when we were the only people left out there and they both really appreciate the fans. I asked Martin if they are having fan out there right now and he smiled and said the last month has been really great.
Great game tonight, nice size crowd at the Ted. Can’t help but enjoy yourself when you get a victory off “The Freak”. Good to see the Braves winning again and doing it with pitching first. Jurrjens was good as usual, great to see him take the game into the 8th and the bullpen although not perfect held the win for him.
Great quotes on Escobar. Good to see him taking a more vocal role snd speaking with the media. Hopefully we have turned a corner for the better with him for good. Producing again on the field with the homerun. Stellar defense last night. What more could you ask for from him.
Glord,
That’s cool. I’m glad to hear that. Well, read in this case.
Sounds like Martin is a really good guy — from your story and what DOB continually says.
RHR, tv sportscaster: You’re both right. They are, of course, headed to Milwaukee. Realized that bonehead mistake on my drive home (fortunately “just” a blog-comment mistake, not one in the paper or a story online, etc). I was thinking of MY next road series, which is Florida beginning Tuesday. Carroll’s got Milwaukee.
Oh, well. Still makes more sense to activate Kelly before they leave town tomorrow, rather than wait until Saturday and fly him up to Milwaukee after they’ve brought, say, Norton up there on the charter, then have to dump Norton (or whoever) one game later to make room for Kelly. Know what I mean?
So makes sense to do it tomorrow — that is, if they’re going to activate Kelly rather than option him to Gwinnett.
glord, Thats nice to hear that on the players. Never met any of them myself but from what I keep hearing guys like Martin and especially Gonzo are not just good players but good people. Great to hear.

glord, how did Yunel communicate with the fans? Via Marteen or did he use some simple English?
Yunel definately knows some English. He just doesn’t seem to be fluent enough to have a full conversation. He smile laughed and answered with a couple words here and there.
Paul I think I’ve figured you out. Your not happy unless your spewing venom at someone. And McCann does handle it well. However he was never the cant miss hometown hero.Just because someone does’nt handle pressure well does’nt give you or anybody else the right to get on their case like that. Besides he’s gone now so let it go. And chilli, no he did’nt handle it well but if your boss came to work one day and said you were getting demoted my guess is you would’nt handle it that well either. I know I would’nt. Why can yall not just say hey good luck Frenchy knock ‘em dead in NY.

glord, Thats nice to hear that on the players. Never met any of them myself but from what I keep hearing guys like Martin and especially Gonzo are not just good players but good people. Great to hear.
Gonzo has signed about 30 things for my son. Martin as well. Now my son has to go out to the lot each night just to say high to those guys. I can get as frustrated as anyone when a player can’t throw strikes or get in a runner from thrid with less than two outs but I never get mad at those two guys. When I have seen them sign autograhs for 10 minutes and leave to their car only to hear one more kid yell for them. Then have them turn around and walk back across the parking lot to see that kid its unique. My 8 year old worships these guys so if Mike cant throw strikes some nights or Marteen strikes out they are going to get a little more understanding from this fan after seeing the way they act.
Why can yall not just say hey good luck Frenchy knock ‘em dead in NY.
I know, right? Frenchy don’t deserve the vile he gets from most folks here. I’d prefer he knock ‘em dead in KC or someplace NOT New York, but hey, he seems like a really nice guy and a hard worker, and just because he didn’t perform doesn’t mean you gotta hate him.
