David O’Brien………….thanks for the props with your 10:05am posting. I weighed the pros and cons back in the winter of which should Frank Wren focus on first, improving the starting pitching or the offense. I have always felt that it is easier to get hitters later on to improve the offense, then it is to acquire starting pitching who wont get hurt and give you innings. Frank Wren did the ABSOLUTE right thing in the winter with his game plan.

If you were to go back and look at my postings in April (I know, you are too busy for that, lol. However I’ll remind you anyway, lol), you will see that while many on here were ripping Kawakami back in April when he struggled……..I kept posting for them to be patient with Kawakami. I was watching how he pitched and in particular his pitching motion. He wasnt “wild”, so much as he was having a hard time “spoting” his pitches. I said back then that he was in the process of adjusting to the Major League strike zone.

Kawakami is a battler. You can see it in his eyes and in his body motion. Even when he struggled, he still was fighting to get these guys out. The last 2 1/2 months, he has pitched much better. He is the kind of pitcher who will probably struggle early each year. However as he gets more innings under his belt, he gets better as the season progresses.

That is why I have been INSISTENT on what a mistake it would be to move him to the bullpen when Tim Hudson returns. He’d end up being banished to the role that Kris Medlen is fulfilling. Why waste Kawakami like that? He isnt the problem.

As I’ve said before, barring an injury to one of the starting pitchers or a trade………Tim Hudson would help the Braves much more as a short reliever (just for the rest of this year upon his return), forming a potential LETHAL 3some with Soriano and Gonzalez to close out the 8th and 9th innings.

Kotchman- 3 years younger, driven in only 5 less runs than Adam hitting out of the 2 hole most of the year. Hits 34 points higher in BA. and 31 points higher in OPS. Fields better than ADam and is much cheaper. Get off the Whacky tobacco! Wren is not about to break up the chemistry of this team for a marginal player like LAroche.

Original Jon…………while I feel that the Braves will have a fighting chance to win tonight….I will have to TOTALLY DISAGREE with your 10:19am posting about the Braves “not being play-off worthy” if we cant beat Tim Linecum tonight. Dude is the reigning Cy Young award winner. If he is ON tonight, it will be tough to beat him.

If we lose tonight, we still can take 3 of 4 in this series by beating up on Barry Zito tomorrow afternoon. You assessment is a little too pessimistic, isnt it?

Do the Braves need another bat?
Since KJ and JF have been removed from this lineup, it seems to me it’s been scoring A LOT of runs.
Now that might be a coincidence. Or it might mean that this is a good lineup, loaded with professional hitters (last night EVERYONE in the starting lineup was hitting .280 or better besides McLouth).
I would like to add another bullpen arm myself, because I think the offense is rolling along pretty well right now.

McFann – I meant Kotchman is “boring” in the sense that he’s not going to wow anybody. He’s a solid and consistant player no doubt. But he’s not going to hit any monster homeruns or light up the basepaths. He’ll just take his singles and occassional doubles and slowly be on his way.

I don’t get the whole “he doesn’t put up the numbers you want from a first baseman.”
No, I guess he doesn’t. But does he put up the numbers you want from your No. 7 or No. 8 hitter — which is what he is?
It evens out, in my mind.

The Braves also have the best-hitting catcher in the NL and the second-best hitting shortstop. And as of the last month, the best-hitting second baseman? So if you’re getting production from those three spots, isn’t it OK that your 1B is “only” a .280 hitter who will drive in 65 runs or so? And oh by the way, give you incredible defense?

Call me an optimist but I actually think the Braves chances tonight are better than 50-50 even with the Freak pitching. The way we are hitting now we don’t miss many mistakes and all pitchers, even the best, make mistakes so the Braves should score a few. The Giants on the other hand aren’t hitting at all with the exception on Wynn and JJJ is a pretty good pitcher himself.

WSX05……….concerning your 12:37pm posting concerning a “rumored” Paul Konerko for Kotchman and Medlen trade………..I have to say that if I was Frank Wren, I’d JUMP ALL OVER THAT. However, I’m not sure if the White Sox would go for that. We probably would have to include another piece to that trade to make it happen (wishful thinking would be for the White Sox to want Kelly Johnson, lol).

If that trade was done, and Konerko walked as a free agent, we’d get the two first round picks as compensation.

However, I feel that there is a chance that Konerko could come to like it in Atlanta. Having him bat clean-up…….and him being a right handed slugger……..and him having a World Series ring with the White Sox in 2005……..would make him a TERRIFIC addition to the Braves line-up.

However, at this point, that is VERY WISHFUL thinking.

And I will confirm what WSX05 is saying as I’ve heard this on multiple radio stations and can’t quite figure it out considering the Chi Sox are only 2 games out of first…

Are they really ready to trade their best hitter just to get a new 2b who may or may not hit well, a 1b who is average offensively, but can turn it up a few notches defensively, and a young pitcher they can plug right into their rotation?

For those also wondering about his D, Paul has made 1 E this year in 784 TC.

My final question, will Konerko really leave Chicago? Remember, he has a FULL no trade according to the MLB 10/5 rule

Paul Lentz

Rob from SC……….I didnt say that there werent any teams who didnt want Jo Jo Reyes. What I did say is that no team would make him a centerpiece in a package to trade one of their stars for. There is a “big difference” between wanting someone if the price was right………….and paying a premium for someone who has struggled like Jo Jo Reyes has.

While I would not want to see Jo Jo pitching for the Braves right now, I would be more than ok with keeping his A$$ at Triple A and establishing some consistency. A young left hander who can throw hard isnt someone you want to give up on easily. However, his trade value isnt that great…….considering how much he has struggled at the Major League level.

P-Town Brave,

Konerko always puts up decent numbers. I know he’s missed some time with back injuries over the past couple of seasons, hence my reasoning for the “broken down.” I haven’t paid much attention to him this season, other than a few games here and there.

Konerko has always been a good 2nd half hitter, and if he’s healthy, he is a force in the line-up.

How many of those 90 games he’s played this year have been at DH?

Paul Lentz

July 22nd, 2009
1:06 pm

Buffalo NY Braves Fan………….the difference is that I didnt “proudly” go on an on about how including Kelly Johnson in any trade proposal would be good for “both” teams. I was clear on it being “wishful thinking”.

I could see why the White Sox would want Kotchman and Medlen to be included in a potential Korneko deal. I’m not sure who else the Sox would want to be included. However, so far the “rumored” deal would potentially benefit the White Sox. Kotchman would be their starting 1st baseman for the next few years. Kris Medlen could be inserted into their rotation right now and possibly develop into a really good starting pitcher for them.

Steve from OH

Pschh, don’t hate Mixxo. Little Med’s stylin – flat cap bill, socks up. It’s what’s in. :-)

What teams need a 2B? Because I agree that KJ won’t be a 4 million dollar bench player, why would the Braves do that when they can trade him to get something they need. I just cant believe that Bobby is really giving up on 2 of his favorites, I love it. Frank Wren is just what this team needed.

I like Medlen too, Soph. I don’t want him traded. He just needs some meds and he’ll be fine. :P
