Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Raul Ibanez and Jayson Werth have all hit 20 plus HR’s so far this year. It’s just not fair……at all.

KJ and Marteen so far this season.

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS
KJ 68 234 33 50 15 2 5 20 21 40 4 2 .214 .286 .359 .645
MP 69 216 33 70 21 0 5 21 22 23 0 2 .324 .387 .491 .877

Funny how runs, rbis, hr, walks are so similar.. More hits in less AB’s for Prado. Also Prado plays more positions. I hope Norton gets dumped. I think the big thing with Kelly is how he gets mentally messed up depending on where you bat him in the lineup. Obviously he didnt like leading off and Bobby kept putting him there early in the season. Funny thing also that Kelly did his best at the 6 spot, whereas Marteen did pretty well in all but 3 and 5 spots in the order. You guys think that Kelly lets where he bats in the lineup get into his head?

Went to the Nats-Mets game tonight and saw the Nationals play a nearly flawless game from start to finish. So funny that a team that bad can look that good (against Braves nemesis Oliver Perez). The Mets had Jeff Francouer batting CLEANUP! Frenchy dropped a fly ball in right that led to a Nats run, but somehow wasn’t charged with an error.
The Nats new center fielder Neyjer Morgan can flat out go get the ball. Made two really great catches tonight. Amazing that the Pirates traded two centerfielders as good as Morgan and McLouth and still have Andrew McCutcheon.
Every Nats game we’re at I see Stan Kasten milling around the seats behind home plate with a great big sour look on his face. Can’t tell if it’s because of low attendance or because the Strasburg negotiations aren’t going well…

Fast Eddie Perez,

Remember Infante can give chipper some days off and still produce. He can also play 1B and RF. Id play Infante once at 1B, 3B, 2B, RF and LF every 10 games. That means he would start 5 out of every 10 games braves play. Fair enough. You can forget about playing time at 2b and exchange it for playing time at SS to give yunel some rest every 10 games. and just let Conrad or KJ give Prado some rest.

“It’s a great feeling when everybody’s playing good and everybody’s playing together,” said second baseman Martin Prado, whose three hits helped the Braves to their 14th win in 20 games and fifth in six games since the All-Star break.

“Everybody’s happier — that’s the way it should be…. If we keep our lineup healthy and keep everybody playing every day,” Prado said, “we’ve got a pretty good shot at October.”

— Braves center fielder Nate McLouth’s left after six innings with a low back strain, but Cox said he might be back in the lineup as soon as Wednesday for the third of the four-game series.

You just got to like Braves chances.

Rockies and Giants at the top of the WC will destroy between them and they play the best team in the NL (Dodgers………or at least the best record).

On the other hand we play the muts, fish, phillies (a team we have owned) and nats (they have owned us, but we should beat those guys and maybe things change now that ACTA is gone).

KJ & Infante come back, cut Norton & send Diory back to AAA, dont screw it up Booby & keep Norton I dont give a dam if he’s a switch hitter, he sux! & go ahead & cut Bennett, he cant pitch even with out a broken hand

As Cox answered questions after the game, the manager kept an eye on the Phillies-Cubs extra-innings game on a TV in his office. I asked him if he’s been keeping an eye on the out-of-town scoreboard during games, to follow the Phillies and the other division and wild-card contenders.

“I look at the scoreboard every single game, I’m not denying it,” he said, smiling….

McCann (whose homer was his 10th, but only his second in 20 games, by the way) was also asked about scoreboard-watching.

“Everybody knows what’s going on, where we stand,” he said. “It’s getting to be that time. Coming to the stretch. Every game’s important. We’ve just got to keep playing good baseball.”

When I mentioned to Bobby that they’ve scored 19 runs in two nights against a team that has the majors’ best ERA, he quickly noted — to his credit — that the Braves missed Cain, who pitched the night before the Giants got here, and haven’t faced Lincecum.

I just want to ask a fair question of the blog.

IF and only IF the Braves keep playing this way, then end up missing the playoff’s by the thinnest of margins (2 or 3 games). Should Cox get the axe?

Remember, Francoeur should have been benched or gone months ago. The same can be said of KJ. Greg Norton has no business being on the roster. And last but not least, there is the issue of Bobby’s bullpen management.

The Braves are in good shape right now. They just need to continue to play solid baseball against the better teams & wax the likes of the Mets & Nats. They would be in fantastic shape right now if they could manage to beat the Nats like everyone else does.

Just look at the last three weeks of the season to see who the Braves play. The final 19 games includes 7 with the Nats, 6 against the Mets & three each against the Marlins & Phillies. 13 of those games are at home.

In the same 19 game span the Phillies have 3 against the Braves, 4 with Houston, 4 at Milwaukee, 6 with the Marlins & 2 against the Nats. 10 games are on the road including the Brewers & Braves.

A lot of ground could be made up in the final weeks of the season. The Braves have the schedule to their advantage in the closing weeks & it should make a big difference if they are close come mid Sept.

What I cant understand is why Bobby Cox wants to “sit down a hot hand” like Conrad while giving a “cold as ice” player like Greg Norton pinch hit after pinch hit at-bats? Conrad has 1 double, 2 triples, and 2 homers in 34 at-bats since his call up, for a .344 batting average. He hit a pinch hit homer in his first at-bat when called up. Yet who does Bobby use in the bottom of the 8th inning against the Mets with the bases loaded and 2 outs (i know, he wasted Conrad earlier in the game by using him as a pinch runner…….but still, damn, lol)?……that’s right, Greg Norton, who is 5 for 45 this season.

Not only that, but he used him as a pinch hitter on Sunday and again tonight. Meanwhile, Brooks Conrad has had 2 at-bats since the All-Star Break, one of which was a walk.

Matt Diaz was in the midst of a 13 for 26 stretch before Francoeur was traded, and Bobby sits him down so Francouer can get some at-bats so he can snap out of it, lol. Konrad is smoking hot since his call up, yet Bobby must be trying to get Norton on track, lol.

Has this become survival of the “unfittest”? Does sticking up the place get rewarded as long as you are the manager’s boy?

I just dont get it. I think the official scouting report should be “when an Atlanta Brave gets hot, wait for Bobby Cox to bench him so he can put one of his BUMS in the game and cool him off”, lol.

I guess that Frank Wren needs to get rid of Greg Norton in order for Brooks Conrad to be used more often as a pinch hitter. Conrad may eventually come down to earth, however isnt the smart thing to do is ride the hot hand until it cools off? I wouldnt be surprised if Conrad has in fact cooled off, given that he isnt being given opportunities to stay sharp by at least pinch hitting in the place of Greg Norton.

Coach, Cox won’t be fired regardless of the ending so it’s a moot point as far as I’m concerned. Moving Francoeur & when it was done was Wren’s decision. He knows full well if a guy like Francoeur is on the team Cox is going to run him out there every day so that’s his issue to relive IF the Braves come up a few short.

We all know Cox isn’t the best strategic manager in the game, far from it in fact. Being a players manager is his biggest asset & liability as well when guys like Francoeur can’t get it done after given every chance in the world.

Back to the point about Wren, he knows Cox’s history with struggling favorites so it was up to him to unload Frenchy. He also could DFA Norton at ANY time of his choosing. Again that’s something Cox doesn’t control directly although he has plenty of input I’m sure.

I’ll agree with you on the bullpen. That’s the one area, of what you mentioned, that is controlled by Cox. He’s ran some of those guys out there wayyyy too many times this year. He plays for today, not tomorrow. When he has some good arms out there he’s going to use them. I guess he’s seen 100’s of leads evaporate over the years with the likes of our former closers not named Smoltz.

The Blogger Formerly known as Billy…………..I’m not being negative about the Braves. I recognize that the Braves are going to have to play some really great baseball if we are going to make a run at the play-offs. It is EXTREMELY important that Bobby Cox pushes the right buttons.

Sure, while it didnt hurt the Braves “tonight” for Greg Norton to be used as a pinch hitter instead of Brooks Conrad………I’m looking ahead to a potentially tough game like tomorrow night against Tim Linecum. If the bases are loaded and 2 out, and we are behind by one run in the 8th inning tomorrow night and Bobby has to use a pinch hitter for the pitcher…….who do you want him to use…….Greg Norton or Brooks Conrad? But because Brooks hasnt been getting at-bats lately, he is probably a little rusty. By using Norton as a pinch hitter instead of Conrad, it’s asking a little too much to expect Conrad to stay sharp while valuable pinch hitting at-bats are being given to a BUM like Norton.

We need to get MAXIMUM use out of the players who are contributing. Situations will rise up soon (we arent going to win every game from here on out 8-1, lol), where we will need a crucial hit from a reserve. The LAST person I want to see come up is a BUM hitting 5 for 45 for the season.

I’m not being “negative”, I’m looking ahead. I like this team. Frank Wren has done an excellent job rebuilding and remaking this team. It just seems like whenever he can, Bobby wants to use “his boys”. That is why I’m afraid of Kelly Johnson coming back. I dont care what he has done at Triple A the past few days. The only person on this team that Kelly Johnson should replace is Greg Norton.

I support players during slumps who DESERVE to be supported. And when I say “deserve”, I mean those players who have a TRACK RECORD of not being in slumps that last 2 months…..players who when they come out of a slump, come back RAKING at the plate. That is why you havent heard me say one bad thing about Nate McLouth. While it doesnt thrill me to see him go 0 for 4 three or four days in a row……..I dont sweat it. He will come around. Plus he does other things to help the team. Also, we have other guys who are picking up the slack.

I don’t think it is a silly question, if a 3rd team is involved. I said that is the only way it is possible for that to even be discussed. I have quite a bunch of Braves fans at work, myself included, I said I like the idea of Lee for the Braves, give the Braves a much needed lefty, but at the expense of whom? I do remember the 2004 Yankees not have a lefty starter and how much it killed them in that series against Boston(It actually destroyed them, forced them to get Randy Johnson). I am not by any stretch saying we are the 04 Yanks but what I am saying is a good lefty in this park, with this rotation goes a long way. Back to my original point, Braves do want another bat. That has been known throughout. 1b is only logical place the Braves can get a bat. Victor Martinez is C, who play 1st, and has a lot of pop in his bat. He can play 1st here primarily, even though we know he can catch. You can have Prado move to 1st in the 8th and/or 9th and Infante to 2nd, still keeps a good defense on the field

Fast Eddie Perez

Doc, I see Infante playing when Chipper is out & maybe some in left, but Booby is not gonna bench Casey, we already have Diaz/Church in right, & Prado should stay at 2nd so I dont think he’s gonna get alot of at bats but its a good problem to have

I’m not the kind of guy will rant “Fire him…..or…….he’s a BUM” without at least explaining why I feel the way I do. When someone criticizes me, I at least would know why.

Like I keep saying, I give Cox credit for this. . .

He has recognized he cannot be Earl Weaver with this team. He must be more like Gene Mauch (without the jinx). Since the team has started to sacrifice and steal bases along with the addition of Prado the team has started to gel.

The coaching staff still lacks.

Doc…I started to leave them out…or bunch them with the Wash and Ariz group…but…they do have a lot of firepower that possibly could return. I don’t think they’ll be a factor..and hope they’re out of it in a couple of weeks. So “out of it” that they fold up and quit…should make our journey a whole lot easier…when we play them 9 more times this year

If the Braves continue to score well in the next week (no saying’ 8,9,10 runs a game), they may not make any trades for offensive help….not at all. The team is full of decent to high batting avg/OBP guys right now, making every single spot in the lineup a REALLY tough out for the opposition. There would have to be a really no-brainer deal out there for them.

I thought trade talks were over. We have absolutely no reason to make a big trade for this year. We may try to get an arm in the bullpen but that’s it. It would be stupid to make a big trade right now.

MK,

It is difficult to lose with as much talent the braves have (pitching and good contact hitters) and yet bobby has managed to produce a .500 club by letting KJ, JF, Norton and Bennett screw tons of games.

There is not much that we Cox haters dont know by this time………lets just focus on the positive streak………..

Go Braves!!!

Paul Lentz,

My thought is that Bobby is currently sending Norton out there each and every night in the desperate hope that Norton can throw together a hit or two and justify keeping him on the roster when KJ gets the call. I am also assuming that when Norton gets the nod tomorrow and makes that walk of sham back to the dugout that come Saturday, Bobby will do the “right” thing with his move and send Norton packing. Of course, I am one of the few that still “believes” in Bobby, so I guess I am looking at the situation with more optimism then it probably deserves.

Fast Eddie Perez,

Dont forget Infante is a great RH batter………..we lack of. He might see a lot of action when we go against LHP either in LF or 1B.
