I will NEVER understand Boras allowing Matt Holliday to go to Oakland
Maybe it’s because he didn’t have any choice?
Um, he looked kinda safe. But, then again from the other side he looked out.
I was actually thinking about the lottery but 6 runs would be ok
July 20th, 20098:23 pm
What kind of name is Tim Timmons?
Not a great slide but what the heck, they rolled the dice. Cant blame him for trying. I like it.
It’s real weird with all of Yunel’s talent that some of the small things haunt him and the team. I’m not trying to pick on him but it’s the truth.
July 20th, 20098:24 pm
John………….Scott Boros did not “allow” Matt Holliday go to Oakland. The A’s traded for him with the intention of flipping Holliday before the trading deadline for a boatload of prospects. This was Billy Beane’s idea. Boros had nothing to do with it.
Is Matt Diaz going to get bashed here for not swinging at the pitch when Escobar went for the steal, or does that applies just to Escobar?
I went to college with a guy named Lawrence Larry…really
July 20th, 20098:25 pm
Tommy should’ve held onto that so he could get another K
Young and Stupid
organist plays theme from winnie the pooh as winn comes up…awesome
I like the 1-pitch outs.
TnBrian- yeah i hope that doesn’t play mind games for him tonight and screw up his ABs
3 pitches, 2 outs. I REALLY like that.
July 20th, 20098:26 pm
I know….if your last name is Timmons how can you name your kid Timothy?
Gil In Mechanicsville
McFann, it’s the nature of the position. The catching position is very trying on your body.
Anyone who wants to rag on Diaz…..just remember the loser who was in right until he went to NY. Yeah, the guy who had the worst OBP of ANY regular with 2500 or more AB’s. Remember also the guy who was manning second base before Prado grabbed it by the throat and took it away! (KJ)
Frenchy and KJ have puked on their shoes in front of Bobby for the better part of a couple of years and it barely gets a mention by some here.
Diaz has a lot of 0′fers before even getting close to what KJ and Frenchy have done in some stretches the last couple of years.
Escobar was a straight steal. No reason to bash Matt.
July 20th, 20098:27 pm
“I went to college with a guy named Lawrence Larry…really”
I met a customer at work named Rick Boner. and thats the way it was spelled…no lie
Chance to get out of this inning with approximately 75 pitches…that would be a great bounce-back.
Looks like Hanson has settled down a bit and is getting into a groove
July 20th, 20098:28 pm
MH turned down 4 yr/ $72 mill from Rockies….I HAVE to believe their was a way Boras could get creative and keep MH outta the Oakland deal…ALWAYS is….
I believe the RF position for the Braves is under some kinda curse. Did an animal die there or something?
July 20th, 20098:29 pm
Big Red is on FIRE!
77 pitches through 5. Very nice comeback after the poor start.
John, are you aware of how trades work for those players without no-trade protection?
July 20th, 20098:30 pm
Meanwhile, the Phils are putting it on the Cubbies. 6-0 and counting…
Phils up 5-0 in the 4th. They are on a rampage right now. Must stay consistent with them for any chance.
That’s what some of us mean about Casey and his glove. How many times have you seen a 1st baseman bobble that or make a bad throw to extend the inning and wear his pitcher down? I know I’ve seen it a ton.
3 straight 1-2-3 innings for Hanson. 77 pitches through 5 innings. If he has another easy inning in the 6th, perhaps Bobby will bring him out for the 7th.
However, chances are the 6th will be his last inning. Regardless if he can get through the 6th, then I’ll be happy, considering the start he got off to.
You’d think if those kids had a GPS they wouldn’t worry about leaving a trail bread crumbs
July 20th, 20098:31 pm
Were the references to Deer and Kittle about power and SOs, was it the overall package with defense? Those 2 guys were not great Defensive players. Could be worse. Could have been called a RH Pete Incaviglia.
the kid has settled in. nice job
Another 2 good 123 inning and he goes 7 strong, hopefully the offense can put 1 or 2 insurance runs up
jason-reports on the defense are not good…
We certainly did keep the right Tommy on this team!! But the wrong Jeff?
Rob from SC
For the time being I am focusing on the Wild Card. We should be able to beat all the teams ahead of us
July 20th, 20098:32 pm
That would be very nice.
I mean, yeah, I understand that he can’t have a huge game at the plate every night, but maybe an RBI or two in more than one game a week…is that asking too much? I’d also take some walks. I–really, I like walks…
I know…maybe if Ross would start once in a while…
July 20th, 20098:33 pm
When we sweep the Giants we’ll be 3 games closer to the Wild Card lead regardless of what the Phils do.
July 20th, 20098:34 pm
The Phillies are helping us in the WC card chase, leading the Cubs 7-0.
John……….Colorado was trying to dump payroll. Billy Beane is the kind of GM who loves to make the “superstar for prospects” kind of trade. He gambled that Holliday would get off to a good start, therefore putting him in a position of commanding a king’s ransom for Holliday.
However, just like Jeff Francoeur’s gamble didnt pay off when he turned down a similar contract that the Braves signed Brian McCann to…….it looks like that Billy Beane’s gamble wont pay off either.
Kotch is like a vacuum cleaner at 1st. Zero erors for the season. Sure wish he were a better hitter
Frank from KS (now living in CO)
Hey, I used to work with a guy by the name of Mike Hunt.
<will be waiting for replies to this post shortly)
i feel a mclouth homer comin
July 20th, 20098:35 pm
And while we’re at it, where are all the rocket scientists here who have been saying the last couple of years that Prado was a utility player and not fit to be in the lineup on a daily basis?
I just love it when so called “experts” try to pigeon hole a player with that “utility” label. A guy who can play numerous positions but is in the lineup every day isn’t just a “utility” player!
Maybe we’ll be lucky enough when Infante comes back to have another “utility” player who isn’t worthy to play every day performing at a very high level.
Steve…is it possible ….knowing MH would hit …well…like MH hits… everywhere but Coors…that Boras could have seen this coming…and advised MH to go ahead and sign with Rockies for 1 more year at a discount…and maintain his “mirage”…or accepted the 4 year deal and then asked to be trade after the next year…ALL kinds of ways to avoid this “not so good situation for MH”…if you’re smart enough to come up with them….
If we sweep the Giant’s and are within a game and 1/2 of the WC then ill be feeling pretty confident we can get into the playoff’s no matter what the phillies do
Ted Lilly is taking a pounding
July 20th, 20098:36 pm
Uh-oh…Riaan Spanjer Furstenburg already 3-3 tonight!
Even though McLouth flied out that at-bat……..I liked the swings he took. He ripped two balls down the right field line that went foul. Maybe it’s a sign that he is coming out of it.
You don’t that…It all depends on the performance of the Rockies.
July 20th, 20098:37 pm
*You don’t know that.
For the WC
I expect the Astros and Marlins to fall out pretty soon.
If the Brewers don’t get a top starter the pitching will falter.
The Giants must not have a drop off in pitching.
I think theCardinals win the Central and the WC comes down to us and the Cubs
Paul…I fully understand Oakland’s view of this situation…don’t blame them in the least for the “gamble”…might not work out…but probably worth the shot…
July 20th, 20098:38 pm
Really? Because that is kinda unfortunate…but really, really funny
Who’s slower… Kotchman or Molina?
I would rather see more of these 2 and 3 pitch easy outs…will make him last longer in the game.
the hopes of the braves nation rest in your hands mr. hanson
July 20th, 20098:39 pm
watch bobby pull hanson after this inning…..
if not this one, he will be lucky to let him finish the seventh.
July 20th, 20098:40 pm
Boog…….. lay off Esco and his whistling damnit!!
giants have great pitching, but it seems like they are not a great road team, and their hitting approach seems a lot like the braves early in the year. sure, they look great when Cain and Lincecum are pitching and win those games 1-0 and 2-1, but i think they will falter down the stretch because of their lack of offense on the road.
I was hoping ya’d get the joke…
And yeah, that’s a true statement, btw.
July 20th, 20098:41 pm
Wait a minute, was this discussed today(last question at the bottom of the page):
PWHjort, nice job getting on ASK BA this week. Great question about the most talked about prospect on this blog not named Jason Heyward or Freddie Freeman.
Carroll, great piece on Yunel. Really glad to hear his side of the story. Hope he’s telling the truth about him and Cox having no hard feelings, because I’d sure love to see him stick around here for a while.
10 K’s!!! It’s the haircut. Maybe Yuni will have Tommy bleach his tips too…
John………….Scott Boras isnt the kind of GM who will have his client sign a 1 year contract extension. The only way he would have a player he represents sign a 1 year contract is if his team offers him salary arbitration and no other team is going to offer what he feels his client is worth (kind of like what Greg Maddux did after the 2002 season when he saw that he couldnt command the kind of contract he wanted. Maddux accepting salary arbitration forced the Braves to dump Kevin Millwood because they couldnt afford to pay him as well).
Simply put, Scott Boras would not have his client sign a 1 year extension when he is 1 year away from free agency. No freaking way.
July 20th, 20098:42 pm
“The Phillies are helping us in the WC card chase, leading the Cubs 7-0″
Nice way to put it. A philly win would actually help our cause. Espn and some of the other national sport outlets where buying a little to much into that sweep that the Cubs had of the Nats.
i like that hanson is just throwing smoke with the fastball the last few innings. 94-96. they can’t touch that along with his breaking ball
If Tommy keeps this up for the rest of the season….any chance he starts getting some serious consideration for Rookie of the Year? Seems like he is receiving no consideration so far…Rasmus seems to be the choice from most.
I admit I had to say it out loud before I realized…makes you wonder if his parents never noticed or just hated him
Tommy looking outstanding tonight
I love strikeouts! WOOOOOO HOOOOO!!!
OK his command it great, his velocity is great and he is mowing them down. He is well under 90 pitches. Leave him in the damn game!
July 20th, 20098:43 pm
Racist, he is promoting KKK
No way Bobby should take him out. Only 88 pitches and dominating the opposition now that he is using is fastball more and more.
10 K. <— wish my bank account looked like that. dominant game for the rook after the shaky start. whew!
Anyone else want to see Moylan next inning . . .?
Hot Darn!!! Big Red is dealin!!!!! 11k’s, 1 walk, and an almost 3 -1 strike to ball ratio
July 20th, 20098:44 pm
11 K’s through 6 innings. 88 pitches thrown. Interesting to see what Bobby does. Since Prado is leading off the bottom of the 6th…….and………the fact that Hanson has thrown 4 straight 1-2-3 innings……..I’d try to get one more inning from him.
11K’s!!! Tommy you are doing extremely well tonite! Can you give us 1 more inning?
holy smoke. what a dominant fastball after showing them the breaker early!
July 20th, 20098:45 pm
May be the kid was an accident and not planned
July 20th, 20098:46 pm
The kid is dealing. Must be the haircut.
Read the article on Yunel. Nice to hear him speak and to hear his side. Hopefully this is the start of a great second half for the guy.
Don’t know if anyone’s posted it yet, but Kelly Johnson has TWO three-run dingers tonight for Gwinnett… This could get interesting…
Anyone else want to see Moylan next inning . . .? – Jaglawyer
Dunno about next inning, but we’ll see him soon enough.
July 20th, 20098:48 pm
The Braves aren’t exactly “getting to” Sanchez…He’s actually doing really well. I hope they pinch-hit for him here in the 7th.
Kelly Johnson is 2-for-3 with 2 3-run HRs. He has all 6 RBI for Gwinnett.
What is it gonna take??
Uh.. just exactly when did Joe and Boog lose control of that game?
CharlieAlphaBravo………..Kelly Johnson raking Triple A pitching does nothing to change my mind about his ability to hit MAJOR LEAGUE PITCHING.
July 20th, 20098:49 pm
Paul…can we agree then…that maybe Boras should have advised MH to take the 4 year /$72 deal from the Rockies…then go ahead andhit his .330 with 35 HR’s or more…and then let the Rockies trade the “signed” MH to any “idiot” willing to overpay for him….(and they’re out there)
I know it’s easy for me to come up with this now…after MH is going to play down to his “normal” level at Oakland…BUT…I could see this coming a mile off…can’t believe SB couldn’t…Gonna cost MH a boatload of $$…jmo…I’ll move on now…and try and pull these Braves through tonight.
Hanson in for the 7th
July 20th, 20098:50 pm
What is it gonna take?? – McFann :Ô:
Dunno man. He needs to relax though, it’s getting to him.
Important inning. Bottom part of the order. Another 1-2-3 inning would be nice.
July 20th, 20098:51 pm
Great job on Escobar peace treaty! I just read the interview that Chop Chop linked to, any chance of doing an in depth on Yunel? I think LOTS of folks would be interested in his life story. Might help get him a few more fans and mend some fences!
Sorry McFann- my predictions are sometimes off a little. Hang in there. If not tonight, then tomorrow for sure!!
Well I see that Paul “Turbo Tool” Lentz is once again trying to answer all of the blog’s questions and comments single handedly. I’m beginning to wonder if he’s blogging from the basement of his parents house.
