Of all the nicknames that ever were, from “Death to Flying Things” Ferguson to Andre (Bad Moon) Rison, surely the stupidest is Maddux’s “Mad Dog.” The guy is anything BUT. Al Hrabosky, the Mad Hungarian WAS crazy, or at least appared so on the mound, but never was anybody under better professional control than Mr. Maddux. Calling him Mad Dog bcause hhis last name sort of sounds like it is matched, in my memory, only by those who wanted to call Stan Musial “Music Box,” for the same reason.
