Prado is more than a utility player. He does not have the raw physical tools that superstar players have. But as we see “small ball” re-emerge, as we supposedly exit the PED era (I say we are just moving away from the peak of the PED era) the value of a smart, consistent hitter that can play a middle infield position is much more than it was 10 years ago. If Prado had no ability to turn on the inside pitch and always looked to hit the ball the other way, I would be less enthused. But since he has developed the ability to turn on the inside pitch, and is willing to drive it down the line or into the gap (instead of always trying to hit a homerun), with that kind of plate coverage, I think Prado could become as very good major league player… not a superstar, but a very good player.

Reaching the mid-point of the season three under .500 equates to 75 wins – three better than last year, but no better than tenth in the draft derby.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Former Myrtle Beach Pelicans first baseman Freddie Freeman has been voted by team managers as the Carolina League’s Topps Player of the Month for June, the league announced today.
Freeman, who was promoted to Double-A Mississippi following the Pelicans’ series-opening 8-1 win over the Salem Red Sox on July 3, batted .337 (30-for-89) with two home runs and 12 RBIs over the course of 24 June games. Freeman’s .302 average in 70 total games this season ranks fifth among qualifying Carolina League players. The Villa Park, California resident swatted six total homers and drove in 34 runs in a Pelicans uniform this season.

Glen W, Thats exactly what I am saying. In my opinion Prado does not seem to have a hole in his swing he appears to handle the pitch in and out equally well. That is probably why he has always hit around .300. He also handles the bat well enough to hit and run (only 13 Ks in 158 ab) and move runners over which is a skill badly lacking on this team.
If he can handle the position defensively he will be a plus offensive 2B.

Just got up and skimmed through the postings about yesterday’s game, and about possibly trading Escobar. I was busy yesterday trying to survive my “Day 1″ of the Main Event of the World Series of Poker here at The Rio Casino in Las Vegas, so I didnt get to engage in the back and forth banter of the events of yesterday concerning the Braves. For those of you interested, I made it through my Day 1. Today is the last of the “Day 1s”. I’ll play again on Wednesday for the 2nd of the “Day 2s”.
Anyway, the Braves do not need to trade Yunel Escobar. The Braves need right handed power. I seriously doubt that the Braves could trade Escobar and get a corresponding player who is of equal value. I could care less about him not being the best person to get along with. He has pop in his bat, delivers in the clutch, has a cannon of an arm, and will only get better as a player. Plus he has one more year after this before he is eligible for salary arbitration. The Braves would be FOOLS to trade Escobar. I do not see Frank Wren as being a “fool”.
Derek Lowe will work out his struggles. He just needs to work out his mechanics and get his sinker sinking properly. I’d rather see him struggle now, when other teams in our team are struggling as well, then struggle in August and September. He isnt hurt. He’s just in a little funk that he needs to work through. He will be fine.

A different version of this has been circulating via e-mail. Retouched and cleaned up:
A schoolteacher in Queens asked her class to raise their hands if they were Mets fans. Every hand went up except one little boy’s.
Teacher: Johnny, you didn’t raise your hand. You aren’t a Mets fan?
Johnny: No ma’am. I’m a Braves fan.
Teacher (frustrated): A Braves fan? Why is that so?
Johnny: Well, my dad’s a Braves fan, my mom’s a Braves fan, so I’m a Braves fan.
Teacher (highly perturbed): Well, what if your mom was a drug addict and your dad was a dropout loser? What would you be then?
Johnny: Probably a Mets fan…

glord I think GG defense at 2B is a little overrated. All Prado has to do is catch what’s hit to hime and turn the DP. That’s it. And just keep on keeping on what he’s doing at the plate. He has no holes in his swing. He is the best bat handler on the team, perfect for the 2 hole, because he can do lots of things to advance the runner.

Glen W,
Nice post. I agree with everything you said. That sounds reasonable, and I think that’s more than the Braves, or any team needs from a 2nd baseman.
The thing that gets me is when people use Prado’s minor league numbers. Dude is a much better hitter now than in the minors. When he got here, he really learned how to hit the ball RF, more so than the minors. They’ve worked with him to start turning on pitches. Now it seems like he can do either given any situation, or even better, based on the location of a pitch. Will he slump? Absolutely. But he will be a legit .300 ba / .800 OPS guy.

With a tough right handed pitcher pitching for the Cubs today, logic dictates that Garrett Anderson will play in left. Now given what Bobby Cox said recently about both Garrett and Diaz raking at the plate, the question is “Does Bobby start Diaz against a right hander tonight? ESPN is televising the game tonight, so it should be interesting to hear what their commentators have to say about the situation.
If Francoeur does not play tonight, then it would not be a “stretch” to assume that Francoeur has been benched. I know that Bobby just doesnt want to say it, but Francoeur needs to be benched. We have 7 games left before the All-Star Break. Playing Garrett and Diaz in left and right makes perfect sense. Then hopefully we will be getting back Omar Infante after the All-Star Break. That will give the Braves more options.

Can you help us by asking Frank Wren alot about trading for a big bat!!!?

glord I think GG defense at 2B is a little overrated
I don’t. Half of the game is run prevention, and a large part of that is defense. Do not underrate defense from any position, especially the up-the-middle positions. Prado has fine hands IMO, but below-aveage range. Kelly is the opposite. Neither are gold glovers though, so the difference is probably not significant.
Bobby’s–if he ain’t here, he ain’t here. Though when he comes back, I’ll assume his “post’s” will be more likely to contain a “moron” than “OPS” or “Great point, Bobby’s! However, I disagree, and here’s why…”

Afternoon All,
The weekend series in DC took the wind out of my sails! The team looked tired and listless other than a nice Tommy Hanson outing.
The trade talk is fun to think about folks we could have, but I think it is going to be difficult for FW to trade either Javy or Yunel during the season and get an appropriate return.
Nice to see Bobby try to play the “hot hands” for a couple of nights in a row. That is not his style so we know that he is not happy with the results he is seeing either.
Spent the morning catching up on the blog and frankly that was more depressing than watching the Braves play. Some of you folks are just beyond words…..

Come on now Boston loves Youkolis, and he will be a long time Red Sox…….
I do also have to laugh at the “Unfriendly Confines thing…..any place they play especially Washington is Unfriendly to this lack luster club !
Tine to get rid of Bobby Cox, along with Escobar, Fenchy, TP, Kelly Johnsonand get a real talent…….unfortunately they had one, and he is 20 years old for Texas, and looks great. at short stop…….

Prado does fit a 2 hitter role very well, being he handles the bat well and sprays the ball to all fields. If I were Wren, I would attempt to get Adam Dunn for that cleanup role that is our black hole in the lineup. He sucks in the field, but he would completely change the dynamics of the lineup.

Hmm,
Paul Lentz,
I think we were all discussing the possibility of trading Yunel or that Yunel is still being shopped for the following 1. A top tier young up and coming starting pitcher, 2. A top tier OF prospect, or a 3. A top tier infield prospect who can play either 3B, or SS, or 2B. Or a combination of the 3..or lastly a combination of a “stop gap type SS” player PLUS that 1 big time prospect starting pitcher (Think Clay Buckholz from the BoSox).
I think everyone here KNOWS that the Braves best “trading chips” IF they want to contend are:
1. Javy Vazquez
2. Mike Gonzalez or Rafael Soriano
3. Garret Anderson (as a DH to the AL)
Also everyone knows the Braves are trying to unload:
1. JESSICA FRANCINE
2. KJ
3. Jo-Jo Reyes
…and for the last time…UNCBrave, enough with the fantasy deals.
Again newsflash…a deal has to make sense for BOTH teams. Not just the Braves.
Heck, I’d take Adam Dunn and Nick Johnson fron the Nats too, wanna throw in Willingham while you are at it?

In the past week. Matt Diaz is 13 for 21 (.619) batting average, with 3 doubles, 1 homer, and 5 RBIs. That is what I call “hitting better”. Sure, Diaz can be a streaky hitter and can have games where he goes 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts. However, when Diaz is “connecting”, the ball JUMPS off this bat. I would love to see what Diaz’s stats would be if he could start regularly.
Jeff Francoeur hasnt had anything close to a “hot streak” (his 7 for 18 stretch with 1 double 3 weeks ago doesnt do it for me). Francoeur will have a few games from time to time where he will get 2 or 3 hits. However rarely does he get EXTRA BASE HITS.
I dont care how much of a nice guy Jeff Francoeur is. He needs to be BENCHED. Use him as a late inning replacement. If he was such a “team” player, then he needs to accept that role. If he cant, send his A$$ down to Triple A and let him work on his hitting down there. However, I do feel that he does have use as a late inning replacement because of his arm in right field. Yet he has to be willing to accept that role (which would probably be a hard thing for him because he feels that he is a starter, plus it will affect what he can get in salary arbitration). Being “labeled” a “utility” player isnt something that Francoeur wants to happen to him.

IF Javy will accept a trade to the Dodgers, they make the most sense from the Braves standpoint. The Dodgers are one of the few teams out there that appear to be able to take on a little extra salary, and have a couple of bats that would go great in the Braves lineup. I’ve heard that the Dodgers are willing to trade Ethier for an elite pitcher, but don’t know if Vazquez is what they would consider “elite”. A more likely alternative would be Vazquez for Casey Blake, who after this season will be owed $11.25 million over 2 years, with an option for 2012. Vazquez is set to make $11.5 million next season, and then become a free agent, so the finances of a deal like this make sense. Blake is also a right-handed power bat, and can play both outfield and infield corners, meaning that he can relieve Prado from having to be Chipper’s backup. The biggest roadblock in my mind is whether Javy will accept a trade to the West Coast, due to a no-trade clause that specifies West Coast teams. Also whether or not the Dodgers would be willing to give up Blake, since they don’t have the same infield glut that they do in the outfield.

Good, the lineup. Didn’t want to have to make Willy Wally be a pest.
McLouth at the ballpark early. Running foul-line-to-foul-line sprints, getting ready for the game, all the while cursing Jordan Schafer, his hurt wrist, and every single blinkin’ day he spends in the minors, LOL.

Gee, thanks, McLouth of the South. My cable provider (Comcast) is having obvious issues transmitting ESPN and its affiliates. Trust me, my coat hanger-beer can-duct tape-coax cable rig works just fine on my upstairs TV.

Wow. Is Bobby Cox off his meds or what? I wonder if Frank Wren pulled a Steinbrenner and threatened Bobby if he didn’t pull him.

jason,
the’s always hope!:)
I hate to agree with John Kincade on 680thefan, but he’s bringing a DOSE or reality to the Cool-Aid-Drinkers who still believe the Braves have a shot at the NL East.

Thanks for the lineup, Chief! Wow…still no Francoeur…
Wes Chipper hasn’t done anything in two months……..and neither has McCann
McCann’s bat has not been silent for 2 months, dude. I’m sorry, but you’re wrong there. He came off the DL 2 months ago (almost to the day), and he’s hit around .329 since coming back. It’s really “only” been two weeks that he hasn’t done much–not two months.

RG, Wayne and Freel are an old joke among good friends, LOL. Irritating in a good way.
Anybody else tries it, they get the Clint Eastwood saloon-to-the-street speech from Unforgiven.

Thanks man. Appreciate the compliment. So to go “against the grain”, I’ll keep this short.

Scoots,
I will continue to back it up that Prado is better defensively than Kelly. His numbers aren’t there, but he’s been playing all over the place. He admitted to trying to be too perfect in his first games at 2nd when nerves would get to him. I think he’ll settle in nicely and the misplays so far are flukish. Could be wrong, but he’s made some great plays at 1st and 3rd to suggest he’ll continue to let grounders at 2nd eat him up, and has that last season in Richmond to back him up. Again, could be wrong, but it’s just my opinion. I really would be surprised if he was less than a .988 fielder at 2nd over time, assuming he gets to keep that job, and that’s saying a lot.

If we trade Vazquez, we lose our best pitcher. Period. JJ is great, and Hanson is making great strides, but HUddy is NOT going to step in and throw shut outs. He wasn’t doing that BEFORE he got hurt. People forget that Tim was, for long stretches, very mediocre for us. Without pitching, this whole thing is moot. And trading Yunel is, in effect, dealing our best hitter with RISP. I’d rather we kept our current roster than remove the most valuable pieces for a Dye or Hawpe who could come in and get hurt and really destroy us next year, too.

Supes there’s plenty of hope. Nobody’s convincing me that, given a trade for a good bat in the middle of the order, this team can’t be 4 games better than the other three. Even minus Vazquez the pitching is superior to the others.
