coach smith-You’re WAY overvaluing DeRosa and what he would have brought us. First of all, he’s signed through the end of the season. Why would we give up more than was given for him for a couple of month rental? Why would we do this for a rental of a Utility Player at all? You cite his power numbers, but don’t take into account that he has only hit double digit Home Runs (throughout his career) in Hitter’s Paradise Ball Parks like Wrigley, Arlington and The Jake.
Couple all of this with the fact that he is valuable as a utility player, is NOT an impact player (which is what the Braves really need) and you have the reason we passed on him. He would be a good extra addition, but not the impact player we really need-AND we’d only have him until October and we lose him and our investment-for WHAT?
You can disagree all you want. I played 2nd base I know what I would have done. I have not played at the Major league level but if its then end of the game and I can make a play to end it. I make that play. Answer me this if the Red Sox end up winning the game you would be singing a different tune.
Coach Smith have you ever heard FW in aninterview? Probably not. I haven’t heard him speak much, but I did catch an ingame interview after the McLouth trade and he was asked about anymore moves. FW replied as of now we are going to take a wait and see approach. Then FW was asked about Schaefer… FW replied that when he was ready he would be back up, and that Schaefer would be in CF next year with McLouth probably moving to LF. That told me two things. 1) McLouth would move to LF and 2) Schaefer would take over CF full time. That was not a week after the McLouth trade was made.
Nate,
Please don’t start the “I played 2nd base” stuff. Most of us here I gather played baseball. No, I wouldn’t be singing a different tune if we would have lost. That’s 2nd guessing. Ending the inning essentially the same as ending a game.
TexasBrave, I think Anderson’s defense is so bad in LF that is offense doesn’t negate it. And I think the more the season goes on the more likely Anderson is going to break down so keeping out of the everday lineup would perserve him in the end.
joe, Didn’t say. Just said Schefer would be in their future plans as the everyday CF starting next year. I kind of got the feeling that Schafer would not be back this year at all, unless he has proved ready. My guess is that they don’t want to make the same mistake twice with the same player and ruin his career. I can’t remember if that interview was on ESPN or Peachtree with Joe and Boog.
Whatever Baba I will play winning baseball why you make stupid ass mental gaffes that will cost you games. I will be the team holding the championship because I make the necessary plays to not give teams extra outs. While you give the team 5 outs in one inning.
Victor Martinez is a great hitter, run producer, lifetime .300 avg and would help this lineup tremendously, but his career high in HR is 25. And does he play any first base, because we already have a .300, 20hr hitting catcher.

coach smith-I misunderstood. The Indians weren’t going to get as much for DeRosa as they origianlly though. I think they’re lucky they got the package they did for a couple month rental.
You’re right-if we trade for someone, it MUST be an impact guy. Just not worth the price tag otherwise. And all of those thinking Vazquez should be the piece traded for what we need-No Way. You can’t reduce the efficacy of the rotation (our strong point) and do nothing more than balance the loss out with adding strength in another area. We need both Vazquez AND a bat.
Nate, are you 12 years old? Can you not carry on a discussion without attacking? Sorry, I thought I was speaking to a grown-up. Go hug your trophies now.
As Coach pointed out, we dont need another defensive liability at yet another position, as our defense is pretty terrible already. For what it would take to get Victor, plus him only being good for another 10 or so more HRs for the year, plus being a catcher not a 1B man, I’ll pass on that
coachsmith-KID being the operative word. He’s 22 years old. Ever heard of 22 year olds (or younger) making mistakes?

Here’s a different take on who we acquire o make a run. What have our main problems been? Rhetorical of course, it’s been lack of offense and terrible defensive play.
If you can’t get a huge impact bat what do you do? How about a lesser bat and someone who can play some infield/outfield defense instead? Stopping runs from scoring counts as much as scoring them does-especially with this rotation already in place.
Doies anone else think that the reason for signing and keeping Kawakami might be to acquire Japanese infielders who are well trained in defensive fundamentals? Might be easier to acquire than trading players we don’t have or prospects.

They said they are not trading Gamel or Alcides Escobar
Do they want Vazquez bad enough? Because if they do they’ll make em available. If not, no dice. Wren finds a better deal elsewhere or holds on to him and trades him at the winter meetings.
You can probably count on one hand how many players who hit .300, good power, AND play good defense. So with most players, unfortunately, you’re gonna have to take the good with the bad.
Martinez might be below average at first base, but I will take those HRs, batting average, and him making the rest of the lineup better.
Something else many here are not taking into account on the acquisition of our mythical Power Hitter. No matter how many HR’s they hit in places like Cleveland, Wrigley, Arlington, Philly or some of the other band boxes, they WILL NOT hit that many at the Ted. They just won’t.
Robert (Chipper Is The Best), while I agree that there is a good possibility that Anderson will break down sometime during the season, I would think it will come towards the end of season and long after Schafer is brought back up. Thus if Anderson is still producing at the plate there will be no reason to bench or release him, the later of which I don’t think the Braves would be willing to do anyway.
I also don’t think Bobby would replace a lefty with another lefty. I would think you would most likely see Diaz replace Anderson from time to time.
I still think it will be a cold day in hell before Bobby replaces either Jeff or Anderson barring injury or a serious offensive drought from Anderson.
You’re right. Wren should ask for Gamel in return, but I don’t think the Brewers are going to give him up for Vazquez, although if I were the Brewers, Vazquez (the way he’s been pitching) would surely make my pitching staff much better. He could put them in the playoffs.
Steve-You need to listen to Back Door Slam (going to see them on the 10th in Burlington) and Dragonforce. Lillian Axe just put out a new CD this week. You might also like Hammerfall and Grave Digger, too.
Look, it would be grand to add V-Mart if 1B was our biggest problem. But until we get a right fielder that isn’t a useless black hole of outs upgrading that position is the priority.
Here’s the thing to get something we have to get something. So, if we were to get a bat then Vasquez is the best piece to trade other than depleting the farm system which I’m not in favor of.
As for the Angels, no way they are giving up Wood. Besides, if the team is wanting to win this year I would prefer Figgins. I think a trade of Soriano or Gonzales for Figgins would be a very interesting one. The Braves bullpen would be depleted but the offesne would be greatly upgraded with the speed and on base capabilities of Figgins. The Braves would have to decide which one of Soriano/Gonzales they think they can resign or is the better long term option and offer the other guy up. Now, I do think the Angels would give up Wood if Escobar was part of the deal.
buffalo NY braves fanthat’s not going to happen for Dunn and Willingham. The Nationals can’t win with those guys in their OF, what makes you think the Braves can?
are you serious? how about because he have 5 better starters, 2 better closers closers, plus better players at several other positions?
I agree with your thoughts on trading for a C/1B. Besides, unless there has been a managerial change of opinion on club direction, Cleveland is more likely to trade Lee and use the $$$ to lock up Martinez. Lee will bring them quite a bit more in trades and will cost more to re-sign–both reasons to trade him instead.
Braves most years have had a weak bullpen. I think it is a priority to try and sign both guys to long term deals as they are very good at what they do and shorten the game for the Braves. I know they both might command closer money, but still.
If they do trade one of them, I hope they get a young setup type guy in return as well as the bat.
joe, Braves most years have had a weak bullpen. I think it is a priority to try and sign both guys to long term deals as they are very good at what they do and shorten the game for the Braves. I know they both might command closer money, but still. I agree, but the odds don’t look good.
I agree…no way I am trading VAZQUEZ…if anything, approach him about re-working his deal by reducing money this year and next and extending his contract
he has this year and next at 11.5 mil, see if he will take that down to 8.5 mil for this year and next then extend him 2 more years at 10 mil each when Heyward/Freeman are up here on the cheap and you have more money (and remember Vazquez is only about to turn 33 afterall)
That would give an extra 3 mil, plus the money of whoever you trade to get a bat
Had a BAD dream that I turned the Braves/Phills game on during the 3rd inning and it was already 10-0 Phills. Good news is that most of the time my dreams never come true.
I don’t want to say this, because I like him but what could we get for Ross? We do have Sammons as a back up, and as the race heats up McCann will play more, we will need his bat in the line up. Just asking for an opinion.
I don’t want to say this, because I like him but what could we get for Ross? We do have Sammons as a back up, and as the race heats up McCann will play more, we will need his bat in the line up. Just asking for an opinion.
coach smith-It’s not an attack, it’s just that some us feel Schafer shouldn’t have even been brought up yet and are not ready to throw him under the bus because he struggled when brought up too early. Keep in mind that Mike Schmidt hit .170 something HIS rookie year. Not saying Jordan is a future HOF, but judging Schmidt from his rookie numbers wouldn’t have shown you that he eventually would be either.
I can’t remember where I read it, but there was that talk about the Jays being on the verge of listening to any deal that would take Wells or Rios, and those contracts, off their hands. Wells I could understand. That’s a huge contract. But Rios… he’s just a tad off this year with his production, and that could totally rebound in the next 80 to 90 games. Plus, it’d be odd to sign a guy to a six year deal and then trade him a year and a half into the deal…
coach smith-they might be that much under their 08 salary structure, but are down significantly in attendance, too, without much hope of it improving this year.
coach smith, you know that nothing is set in stone when it comes to professional sports. The idea of moving McLouth to LF and Schaefer to CF. It all will depend on Schaefer doing his part.
DOB-Congratulations on your HOF presentation. If you need moral support, I imagine that Adirondack Dave, Myself and a couple other North Country residents could come over and cheer you on.
I am pretty sure Wren has been instructed to not add any more payroll. At least, not $6 million. That was part of the reason we didn’t get a big bat in the offseason. Liberty Media really has no interest in the Braves and will be selling them soon. Maybe in the next two or three years. If they were smart, they would spend some money, build a winner, get attendance up, make money, and then sell high. But, they probably won’t and we will have to continue to get creative to fill our needs.
coach smith: I was just looking at that. I recall all the hype this pre-season about how the Braves plans of increasing payroll haven’t changed. Every calculation I could figure, no matter how, resulted in a reduced payroll for this season. Yet when asked the response was, nothing has changed we have money to spend. Truth is things changed, the economy changed and the payroll went down.
Or Wren is sitting on about ten million ready to spend it in a trade…. I just don’t think that is the case.
back to your point about hitting homers at the TED
then don’t you think that Chipper and Andruw Jones should get more credit and praise as Homerun hitters beacuse of spending so much of their careers hitting at a big park….not to mention, neither have been steriod aided
soemthing people dont’ talk about but I would argue that Chipper’s 400+
and Andruw’s nearly 400 is more impressive at the TED w/o roid accusations than someone like PALMERO or SOSA’s juice induced home runs hit in a BAND BOX
“it’s just that some us feel Schafer shouldn’t have even been brought up yet and are not ready to throw him under the bus because he struggled when brought up too early”
The Braves kept Hanson on the farm to work on a few things, whether that was mechanics, pitches, control, or arbitration postponement is irrelevant. Imagine had they brough him up early to have a Schafer-esque result. The weeping and gnashing of teeth would be tremendous.
I could have sworn I heard that interview with FW in regards to Schaefer and McLouth. But that would be a good question for David O’Brien to inquire about. What is the outlook on Schaefer’s immediate future with the club as he is trying to work his way back up this year?
Thanks Mr. O’Brien in abvance. Keep up the great work.
” than someone like PALMERO or SOSA’s juice induced home runs hit”
I don’t know. It wasn’t easy for Sosa, what with all his corked bats, syringe in his ass, and his english coming and going on a whim. It was all the man could do to make it in this crazy mixed up world.
if the braves do make a trade i hope that it is not for someone who is going to be around just for the rest of the year. i hope they can acquire somebody like mcclouth who has 4 years left that way we can build off the trade
I had a dream last night that the Braves were losing and BMac was going 0 fer again…then he came up with runners at first and second. He hit a double and both dudes scored, but the Official Scorer changed it to a single and an error and took away his RBI.
DOB..you are funny how you shoot down some of the trade ideas brought up on the blog but you didn’t shoot down the idea of McFann and McCann for Pujols. So, Mcfann it sounds like a good deal, make sure your bags are packed but not till tomorrow since McCann hits tonight’s pitcher well.
Heath, I also had a dream about some very hot brunette with beautiful blue eyes that just had a thing for me. We were by a pool and my girlfriend was no where to be found. Not saying I would cheat on my girlfriend, but…
DOB, Heard any rumblings about another Oriole OF by the name of Nolan Reimold? He’s a 26 year old rookie who is putting up some big time numbers. I’d love to see Wren try and snag him.
“What is the outlook on Schaefer’s immediate future with the club ”
First: Heal and strengthen the hand.
Second: Fix the gigantic hole in his swing.
Third: Whenever the first two are complete, join the club… I wouldn’t be surprised to see a September call up this year. If Schafer actually gets it all to gether quicker, perhaps he is called up sooner and tested out. If that goes well, perhaps we have a spot on the bench for Francoeur.
coach smith-Yes, Chipper and Andruw DO deserve some extra credit for their power numbers at Turner Field-especially with some of the totals put up by the juicers playing in little bandboxes. However, I think (likely due to weather patterns?) it’s even harder to hit them out off the Ted this season.
Honestly, offensive wise, I’d be happy if we just had our players hitting to their expectations or career numbers. If THAT were to happen we wouldn’t need any other pieces.
Later y’all-it’s been a fun back and forth this morning-must be the company. Time to go Rock In The Free World for this Denizen. I’ll check in later. Carry on.
This is a down period for MALONE and LIBERTY. Turning the BRAVES into a high quality commodity would be in their best interest. Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t the owners in the middle of a second year of ownership? And don’t they have to hold that ownership for a minimum five years? I would think they would want to be winning division by the end of next year and then beyond that level in the last two years of their tenure with the club. The team is still not solid at 2B and LF/RF. I think they want WREN to continue pushing forward and would be willing to increase the pay-roll AS NECESSARY toward that end the balance of this year and through the next.
TennesseePaul, I agree, but what I was looking for was a response from DOB, with the inside knowledge on Schaefer’s future in Atlanta in reagrds to trades and such. To gain info on the debate with coach smith.
If I am wrong I can deal with it and will own up. I am curious though, because I swear I thought I heard FW say something about that.
And on the topic of Scaefer not hitting the fastball… I think that had more to do with the injured wrist more than the fact that he can’t hit a fastball. Francouer can’t hit a fastball.
i love this advice from one mets fan, on what to do to help the mets:
Take a time machine back to the winter, sign Derek Lowe and lose Oliver Perez’s phone number. Finance the difference in salary with even more hideous advertising at Citi Field, if there is any room left.
Lets all just see how this series with the Phills goes and if this offense can somehow squeeze out some runs for the pitching, we could take the series. Then, I think, we can get serious with our trade ideas. It’s strange, but we could be two games out of first come Thursday night. Doubtful since Hamels is supposed to pitch one of those games but Kawakami could do what he did against Halladay.
Enough of Jeff Francoeur’s stupid underwear. Hit the freaking ball. I’ll quote Crash Davis from ‘Bull Durham’………”when you get to The Show and win 20 games, then you’ll look “colorful” if you walk around wearing “fungus infested shower shoes”. However right now, you look like a slob”……………When Francoeur starts CONSISTENTLY hitting the ball out of the park and delivering in the clutch, then maybe what kind of FREAKING underwear dude wears will sound “colorful”. However unless that time “ever happens again”, I could care less about what kind of “Peter Pan looking” drawers dude wears.

That would give an extra 3 mil, plus the money of whoever you trade to get a bat

when talking about the payroll issues does anybody realize this:
Opening Day payrolls for 25-man roster
(salaries plus pro-rated signing bonuses):
2009: $ 96,726,166
2008: $102,365,683
according to those numbers you would think the Braves should have about 6 million available dollars without going over last year

First: Heal and strengthen the hand.

coach smith-Yes, Chipper and Andruw DO deserve some extra credit for their power numbers at Turner Field-especially with some of the totals put up by the juicers playing in little bandboxes. However, I think (likely due to weather patterns?) it’s even harder to hit them out off the Ted this season.
Honestly, offensive wise, I’d be happy if we just had our players hitting to their expectations or career numbers. If THAT were to happen we wouldn’t need any other pieces.
