Guys I havent been a regular contributor to this blog since DOB first started covering the Braves… So I will take any initiation I have to endure to get back into the club.
No, of course I’m not trying to get anybody killed–that was a scare-tactic…and it worked! Just keep it in mind the next time you mention uh…what’s-his-face…
McFann – I was away for 3 weeks and my randy little Blue Jay weighs at least another pound (fat little ‘effer) and appears to have 3-4 little Roy Halladays hanging around for a feed !
Got to say Angels and Redsox are the 2 teams that spend they money the smartest. I know Boston spends a lot more than we do and many other teams, but they always put an unbeatable team on the field (for the last 7 years maybe?) Same goes for the angels last 9 years……….
I know they are in the top 10 but, what I mean is they make the junkees, muts, phillies, cubs, tigers and astros look like fools. Dodgers have put better teams all together last 2 seasons but before that, they also looked like fools.
i absolutely understand the necessity for adding a bat to this line-up, but it would be a huge mistake to trade vazquez. i also think it’s unnecessary. hear me out:
as bad as we have been, i still say this team–with the pitching we have– only needs to make two simple moves to contend for the division, and one of those moves is internal: bench kelly johnson (or send him to AAA) and play prado at 2b until infante returns.
the 2nd move is, of course, to acquire a solid bat for RF, but you dont need to trade javy vazquez to do that. just trade with a team that’s dropped out of contention and is hoping to move payroll on a guy who’s gonna be a free agent next year. a rental player is fine. trade them francoeur and a prospect–or a different, reasonable package–and you can do that deal while holding onto vazquez.
we have an incredible starting rotation and a pretty strong bullpen from the 7th inning on. if you win, it’s going to be because of the pitching, and javy is one of the strongest we have right now.
i know you all think we have to sign a hitter in the echelon of pujols and manny ramirez to make a move, but not only do i disagree, i think you’ll have a hard time finding what you’re looking for. ie–adam dunn (for vazquez)? why would the nats want a veteran like vazquez? they’d want young pitching, and it would be idiotic to trade medlen.

I’ve got to introduce the winner of the Spink Award, who gets inducted into Hall of Fame Writers/Broadcasters wing.
Actually, I shouldn’t save I’ve “got” to do it. It’s gonna be cool. But gonna be a little nervous standing in front of those thousands of people who are there to see Jim Rice and the others get inducted. Best part is going to be sitting around in the tent before the ceremony begins, with the 40-50 Hall of Famers who’ll be there. And staying in that big, grand Otesaga Hotel, which is rented out for the weekend for baseball officials and Hall of Famers and their families, and a few other schlubs like myself.
That sounds really cool. I want to go to a Hall of Fame induction in Cooperstown. Who knows, maybe by the time Maddox is inducted I’ll be able to afford to go…
jed, voice of sanity. Couldn’t agree more. I actually think you could solve both internal. If Schaefer can come back up and just get on base through hit walk, whatever, you could then move Frenchy to the bench or to Gwinnwt, I don’t care.
I also have an idea about the batting order. We saw what happened when Escobar was dropped to the 5 hole. Why not put him in clean up with McCann 5th? Everyday protection for Chipper. No, H e won’t strike fear in opposing pitchers with his power, but he has excelled with RISP, and he is a contact hitter. Will not strike out alot. Also with McCann batting fifth, on his days off BC might think twice before batting Ross 7 or 8 whinch I think has been a key mistake that he has made this year.
Doc, Angels spent a good chunk of money on Gary Matthews Jr., who is pretty terrible and Boston spent quite a bot on Julio Lugo, who is also pretty terrible. But I do agree that they spend their money wisely, for the most part.
For BOS, it’s not the big money contracts, rather the bargain basement prices. They said Sunday that BOS spent only 6.5 mil for Penny, Smoltz and that Japanese pitcher. Talk about money well spent, and that’s even if Smoltz doesn’t do crap this year.
Oh no…I’m terrified of spiders! That’s why I said “just this once”! A big one nearly got on me the other day and I almost had a heart attack! (Bad choice of words…)
These are 5 outfielders that I think Wren might have his eyes on
1. Cody Ross (Frenchy, Medlen, and a prospect)
2. Juan Pierre (Vazquez)
3. Nelson Cruz (Frenchy, Medlen and a Prospect)
4. Dye (Frenchy,Medlen and 2 prospects)*only if the Atl and dye agree to execute 2010 option
5. Dunn (Frenchy and 3 prospects)
If Wren trades Vazquez for Pierre, that will be my last day as a Braves fan, seriously.. The Braves need a power bat, not speed.. We already have speed along with power in McLouth.. We need straight up power and the ones that fit the bill on that list are Dye, and Dunn..
A lot of websites say we match up great with the Brewers. I understand that the Brewers GM said they will not trade Mat Gamel or Alicides Escobar. However if we give them Vazquez we need to insist on one of them in return. Gamel although LH could play LF because he has no Glove at Third Base

Eh, not exactly. They spent 1.5 million on Saito, but with incentives that can increase to 7.5 million. They spent 5.5 million on Smoltz, but that can increase to 10.5 million. And they spent 5 million on Penny but his salary can increase to 8 million. So anywhere from 12 to 26 million on those 3.
yeah jason, some of the posts i’ve been reading here are way overboard–complicating matters as opposed to simplifying. it’s odd, we’re a bad team right now, but still it wont take a lot of moves to give us a shot at the division. not sure it’s wise to count on schaefer at this point, but he’ll be good eventually. i like escobar hitting 5th. that’s the perfect spot for him. that way, he provides protection for mccann. he’s about the only bat we can count on for that, if you stick w/ chipper batting 3rd.

5. Escobar SS
6. Kotchman 1st
7. Anderson LF
8. Infante/Prado 2nd
ALL OF YOU DUMBAS*ES CAN KEEP CONCOCTING YOUR SILLY LINEUP SUBSTITUTIONS AND TRADE PROPOSALS, HOWEVER, IF YOUR HEAD WASN’T SO FAR UP YOUR AS*, YOU WOULD KNOW WHAT AND WHO’S THE REAL PROBLEM OF THIS TEAM.
bobby cox! HOW IS HE NOT THE PROBLEM? THE BRAVES WILL CONTINUE BEING MEDIOCRE UNTIL HE RETIRES OR IS FIRED.
THE ONLY GUYS WITH ANY SENSE ON THIS BAORD ARE ROBERT AND COACH. THE REST OF YOU ARE BLIND HOMERS AND BLATENT IDIOTS ALSO.
jed – the big thing you are forgetting is that the Braves just will not absorb a big contract from a team out of contention looking to shed payroll. The Braves will have to create payroll space for this new guy. That is why a lot of people mention Vazquez – not because they want to move him but because he would be a possiblity.
Vazquez’s value may not be higher than it will be in the next month. He is pitching as well or better than he has in his career. Who knows if that will continue. There is no other big arm on the market especially with Bedard’s shoulder issues. He will get us a big return – 2 top prospects or 1 top prospect and a bat. He will also clear $11 million in salary which will open up space for a big bat.
The Braves won 14 consecutive division titles IN SPITE OF Bobby Cox, not because of him. Please stop giving him credit for that but then say he is in no way responsible for our poor play presently. WHEN ARE YOU GUYS (ROMAN GAL TOO) GOING TO REALIZE THAT THIS MAN IS PAST HIS TIME? I’M SURE HE MEANS WELL BUT IT’S TIME TO GO IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION. I CAN’T WAIT UNTIL HE LEAVES. PLEASE LEAVE BOBBY, PLEASE!
Lost in the horrible offense is the fact that getting a big bat won’t help our terrible defense. Except Kotchman, every grounder is a possible baserunner. Escobar and Chipper have 3 less errors than the entire Phillies team. Do teams take infield anymore, if not maybe our infield should begin too.
Everbody that thinks the Rangers wont trade Nelsen Cruz consider the fact they just called up Julio Borbon the next Texas stud speedster plus the Rangers are going to get Josh Hamilton back they have Andruw, Bryd, Murphy. The rangers hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo has been working with Frenchy in the offseason and hitting coaches have egos. If any team would take a chance on Frenchy the Rangers might.
The Braves are currently having trade conversations with the Phillies. Despite the teams being division rivals, the Braves are interested in Jason Werth. The Braves want to offer Javier Vazquez for Jason Werth straight up. This deal is supposedly very close to happening.
I thought the best part about MOST OF YOU ARE IDIOTS! post at 10:10 is the “reverse” all caps. That is typing in all caps, and then having (Bobby Cox!) not be in all caps. Brilliant to say the least. I envision somebody yelling, and then whispering Bobby’s name. Almost like Adam Sandler would do. Perhaps in a baby talk voice?
But then I got to the following line: “THE ONLY GUYS WITH ANY SENSE ON THIS BAORD ARE ROBERT AND COACH.”, and I laughed out loud for a few minutes. No offense Coach or Robert. But that is FUNNY!
Or should have said:
NO OFFENSE COACH OR ROBERT. BUT THAT IS funny!
I’m now confused on my bold/all-caps/italice etiquette. Just when I thought I had it figured out, somebody comes along and tells me that I’m an idiot. Add to that, I thought we were supposed to say “and” idiot?
brian–yes, i follow your logic and realize the financial situation, but any acquired salary would be prorated, with the braves paying only for august and september. also, i’m not talking about getting a guy making 15 mil per. i think we can find a fit.
Was just looking over the photo’s from Tim Hudson’s foundation. Saw a picture of Jo Jo Reyes and it got me thinking. Am I wrong to still believe in this guy. He has good stuff and throw Left Handed. Is it possible for him to gain the confidence needed to succeed in the Major Leagues.
jed, I saw yesterday that DOB had posted something about if Wren “sells” at the deadline, it would be for future players to group together with the younger players they expect to be up next year and 2011, NOT grabbing stop-gap players in return.
Are you of the belief that Wren is still looking to “buy”, or do you think he’s going to let this group, ride it out and see where they stand?
BTW, I couldn’t agree more (and have been preaching the same thing for weeks), that simply the “addition by subtraction” of KJ and Jeff would be enough to give this team more wins. Provided the guys that replace them aren’t worse than either of them defensively.
That’s just how bad those two have been at the plate.
I watched one of Ken Rosenthal’s video updates earlier today (not sure how current it is), and he reported that a “Braves official” stated that Francoeur has looked better at the plate in the last two weeks than he has in the last two years.
DOB,
The Otesaga is one grand old hotel. It’s like what I imagine hotels were like in the days of the robber barons. I’ve stayed there a few times. I know you are not a golfer, but it has an amazing course with pot bunkers on several holes, from which it is almost impossible for a hacker like me to escape. Will you have your motorcycle? Probably not, but the area around the lake and in the village are spectacular. Enjoy!
Do you think Reyes could be counted on to come out of the pen. (Rob)
it’s possible. he is usually good the first time through the line-up, and he does have pretty good stuff. On the other hand I think he lacks confidence & is a bit of a head case and late games appearances out of the pen-setup //closer- might cause too much pressure for him to deal well with. I do think it is a good thought and worth trying to see how he responds. Perhaps start him in mid-relief and work up from there. If he could develop consistancy he would have good value as a lefty in the pen. I hope they try it.
The Braves are currently having trade conversations with the Phillies. Despite the teams being division rivals, the Braves are interested in Jason Werth. The Braves want to offer Javier Vazquez for Jason Werth straight up. This deal is supposedly very close to happening.
Yeah, the only holdup is that we want to send them Jeff Francoeur and get back Chase Utley

i absolutely understand the necessity for adding a bat to this line-up, but it would be a huge mistake to trade vazquez. i also think it’s unnecessary. hear me out:

what i’m arguing for is addition through subtraction. KJ and JF have killed so many rallies and been such dead weight to the offense that simply removing them will improve production. infante (even prado) is a huge upgrade over KJ, and that solves the first problem. finding a solid run producer–and not some mythic slugger–for right field will further bolster and stabilize the offense. will it be the greatest offense? no, but, with the pitching this team has, it will be enough to win.

Not enough insults in that rant for me to give an F-bomb.

jed – the big thing you are forgetting is that the Braves just will not absorb a big contract from a team out of contention looking to shed payroll.

Wow. Too much “new” info for one night.

jed, I saw yesterday that DOB had posted something about if Wren “sells” at the deadline, it would be for future players to group together with the younger players they expect to be up next year and 2011, NOT grabbing stop-gap players in return.
Uh-oh.

DOB,
The Otesaga is one grand old hotel. Enjoy!

it’s possible. he is usually good the first time through the line-up, and he does have pretty good stuff.
