The Braves are a collection of losers. It begins with the work of Frank Wren and Bobby Cox, and continues down to the bottom of the 40 man roster. Lowe is an over-paid #3 stater at best. He was all the Braves organization could attract, and to do that, they had to grossly over-pay him. Chipper is a has been. He complained about no pitches to hit with runners on. The reality is he CAN’T hit with runners on. He has also played bone-head defense. He plays like what he is…a old EX-star, whiose skills are gone. This team loses because they consistently Finds a Way to Lose. They give extra outs, have lousy middle relief, have a head-case at shortstop, and a collection of Punch-and-Judy hitters with no power, who choke with a game is on the line. (Like 3 strikeouts in a row last night, a pass ball, or throwing to the wrong base.) Fundamentally, this team is a joke. Where did they learn to play this game? The caliber of play from this collection of losers is on a high school level. Kelly Johnson should be released, along with Jeff Bennett, Manny Acosta, Peter M. and others. Garrett Anderson (from the tiny brain of Frank Wren) is old, and has no desire to play. He’s a pay-check ball player…no fire, no desire, with absolutely no defensive skills any more, with no power. He is too cool for this team. (He believes that anyway.) This team is hard to watch. It’s the Headless Horseman meeting the Keystone Cops. I wish I could have a job that paid millions of dollars, while being totally inept. Many of the Braves 40 man roster (and especially their management) are filling that description. They should have a new cap (for Home, Away, and Sundays) with a capital “L” on the crown. It would fit them well

Ages of players in 2010

June 27th, 2009
7:50 am

Chipper Jones – 38

Brian McCann – 26

Yunel Escobar – 27

Kelly Johnson – 28

Casey Kotchman – 27

Nate McLouth – 28

Jordan Schafer – 23

Jair Jurrjens – 24

Derek Lowe – 37

Tommy Hanson – 24

Kenshin Kawakami – 35

Tim Hudson – 35

It’s not a young team. 29.3 average. The time to win is 2010. 2011 is going to be when the Braves finally decide to rebuild.

Bobby is pathetic. I loved him as a manager alwthough as far back as 91 he still makes bonehead moves I just don’t understand.

Last night I just gave up. Two men on, NO OUTS, going against Beckett where runs will be a preimium and he doesn’t bunt over. It’s a joke. If that was Game 7 of the World Series you can bet you would be doing it. So why not now?

He has NO IMPACT on this team. I give up. This team can NEVER win a division or WC.

AndyC

June 27th, 2009
7:57 am

The NL central division is actually pretty similar to the East. No one over there is tearing it up either and every team is technically still in the race. The Pirates are only 5 games out…but does anyone really think the Pirates can win the division? Didn’t think so. By the way, the Braves and Pirates have the same record.

In 2011....

June 27th, 2009
7:58 am

The Braves are going to be paying a 39 year old Chipper Jones, a 38 year old Derek Lowe and a 36 year old Kenshin Kawakami 35 million dollars. With the state of the economy and attendance numbers, the Braves will not have a 96 million dollar payroll. That 35 million could be close to half of the teams funds.

this team is in need of new leadership.

I think it’s time to “thank” Bobby Cox for his sevice as manager and let him retire after the season is over.

We need a manager who is going to fight for his players and stand up for them, but also ENFORCE discipline, make sure everyone plays good, solid fundamental mentally ERROR free baseball. If not, the players need to play like their JOBS are on the line. No more of this RELAXED “bobby has my back” BS stuff. NO MORE. It’s not working.

I’m not saying we need an Ozzie Guillen in here, but someone tough, like Eddie Perez, a former catcher who isn’t afraid to get in people’s faces, yet the young players, esp. the latino guys can relate to. Players like Jair, or Yunel (the future of the Braves are young guys like those 2 players).

Someone who can demand and light a fire under these guys a bit, b/c they are making mental errors, not passionate about the game (most of them), and seem to be very lackadasical in their approach. Where is the excitement and passion about being a big leaguer anymore?

I see it in B-Mac, Yunel, McLouth and even the slow as you know what Kotchman still cares.

I see the “gamer” in Ross. David Ross is just a ballplayer. Lucky to have him on the team.

I see it in Jair, Javy, D-Lowe, Soriano and Gonzo.

I don’t see it out of Jeff, Kelly, LOAF, or Chipper right now.

LOAF needs to go. He can take his professional “hitter” act somewhere in the AL as a DH.

Jeff and Kelly need to be GONE. OUT OF HERE. For good.

Chipper needs to rethink what he wants to do for the next 2 years. Is his heart here in ATL, or does he like Smoltz want one more shot at a ring?

I’m the biggest Chipper Jones fan here, Selfishly I want to see him retire as a Brave, but what I’ve seen since Sunday’s ejection is a whole bunch of nothing from him. Obvious frustration and no passion shown.

All of this goes back to Bobby Cox. Again, thank you but it’s time to go in a new direction.

Tom O'Hawke

June 27th, 2009

RG, I had some internet problems, if you gotta go, good morning.

Braveheart

June 27th, 2009
8:50 am

Chipper looked like he had to shed a layer or two of fat while he was at the WBC. He worked it off by the time the season started, but still had a bit of that Glavine gut and spread across the middle when the season started. He’s worked that off now, but he just doesn’t look right out there physically to me. Part of it is that he’s just old, and his body looks old out there these days, not strong and solid like in his prime, or wiry and athletic when he was young. He’s looked particularly unathletic in the field this season. Can’t just say it’s all about getting old. Chipper’s never been one to get all into physical fitness. That takes a toll eventually. But I think his lack of conditioning this offseason accelerated the aging process a bit this season. He looks really old out there, especially in the field, where he can’t move, and just doesn’t seem nimble, agile, flexible whatsoever. He’s still a great hitter though. I think he’s just in a slump right there that he’ll come roaring out of like a bat out of hell eventually. Or maybe he’s now paying a price at the plate for his lack of conditioning last winter.

Jeff R

Braveheart… you’re right. Chipper is a 37 year old with an oft-injured body. His power has declined. Other than PR, I’m still scratching my head as to why he was given a three-year deal (I’d get a year’s contract with an option).

For all the rah-rah talk about how today’s ballplayers are extending their careers, it depends on the individual. Too many generalizations.

If Wren isn’t planning for the future at 3B, he needs to.

Braveheart

June 27th, 2009

When Garrett Anderson didn’t back up that play last night that Diory butchered, and Pedrioa took two, Garrett should’ve been yanked off the field and been told to clean out his locker. That was friggin’ beyond disgraceful. Completely inexcusable. That guy really doesn’t give a sh!t, and doesn’t even pretend to. Call up some kid who’s so desperate to stick that he’ll do whatever it takes, including backing up bases and fielders. That POS just stood out there with his hands on his knees and didn’t even flinch. Just stood out there like a statue with his hands on his knees. Who the hell does that?

I’m not mad at Diory for that play because, well, he tried, and he just wasn’t talented enough to make the play. But for Garrett to just stand out there with his hands on his knees? That’s just an unforgivable crime against baseball. That’s the old veteran leadership this team has?

JeffR, Chipper wasn’t really given much money. He”l make about $62 million over the next five seasons. An average player will be paid $59.1 million on the free agency market over the next five seasons. Chipper would have to be worse than a league average player over the next five years for that contract to hurt them.

I think many of you need to stop thinking about how many games behind the Braves are and start thinking about building a true winner. Who cares if the Braves are 4 games behind? What if they actually make the playoffs by dumb luck because the Phillie’s rotation implodes and the Mets go down with injuries? They aren’t going to get past anyone in the playoffs. Look at how the Red Sox and Yankees killed this team… The Braves are in no condition to go anywhere this year the way the team is currently constructed.

What bothers me is that other than the pitching staff are the hitters. I never anticipated them being quite this bad going into the season (there are bright spots like McCann but we all know he can hit). The really frustrating part is Bobby Cox who played his worst line up for nearly 1/3 of the season and he still is parading Frenchy out there letting him take his swats at whatever is within 3 feet of the plate. At least he has finally stopped playing Kelly Johnson every day and how long did it take him to send Schafer back to the minors??

It is so frustrating seeing our good pitching staff taking the lumps because of poor hitting, miscues in the field (which should not be happening!), and lack of aggression. This station-to-station baseball with a team with no speed or power is aggravating.

Well, you all know this. Just venting… ;-) I can’t wait for 2010 and 2011. I hope Wren gets us at least 3 decent hitters and shores up the line up (working a miracle like he did last off season). Make trades for some low cost players to shore up the deficiencies like RF and LF, lack of power at 1B, and the team will be fine. Hopefully one or more of these guys can run. Maybe we need to trade Escobar or Johnson for someone who can lead off.

Personally, I don’t think we should depend on any prospects at this point. Schafer is not the answer. Let him develop! Put him on the bench and make him a 4th outfielder and let him work his way into the line up. If he rips the cover off the ball, then and only then consider swapping him with someone on the field…

Danville has scored 36 runs in four games (9 runs per game), and the GCL Braves have scored 20 in 3 (6.67 runs per game). Yeah, I know, it’s a small sample size, but the major league Braves clearly aren’t scoring like this and I don’t recall them ever having a stretch like this at any time this year.

When will this help us? 2012? 2013?? LOL

Braveheart, totally agree with your assessment of GA, I would rather lose with players that care than to watch that kind of effort. No excuse for any player to be on a field doing that trash and I want to say something worst but if the Braves don’t care, soon we may not either.

Baba this year is COMPLETELY different than ‘93, what color is the sky in your world? That team had come off two WS years. Even if as you say, the Braves are only a few games out and start winning series, which they haven’t done in weeks….they still will have no chance to beat the Dodgers. I don’t say just fold up the tents and quit. I am just saying, this team has no leadership. Bobby has been around too long, isn’t hungry enough, he has lost some talented coaches and he just doesn’t seem to manage the game. I watch HS coaches that seem to understand baseball more than he does (which I know isn’t true) and know how to manufacture runs more than he does (which isn’t true). He just doesn’t seem to care other than to cheer the batter…”come on Frenchy”

This team is not far away but along with one more bat and a middle reliever, they need new leadership

My take on Bobby Cox…

Bobby’s like the lovable ol’ grandfather. He loves his grandkids. He spoils his grandkids. He’s been successful in life beyond most people’s wildest dreams and therefore has nothing left to prove to anyone, and no reason to go “above & beyond”. His legacy is secure and will never be questioned. And did I mention that he would never discipline his grandkids?

So…
the kids get spoiled, and nothing of worth is ever accomplished again.

Until the next generation of leadership comes along..

If the Braves put a corpse out in lef field, could it possibly have less hustle and energy than Garret Anderson? There is absolutely no spark on this team. Everyone on the bench looks like they’re making dinner plans.

Almost spit out my coffee reading that post:) Good stuff.

It’s a tradition now, we see GA out there “trying to play LF”…and it’s LOAF.

When I got to the ted next month…it’s going to be a LOAF chant from my seat.

You know, the Braves may have another subpar season…but if it ends up resulting in:

1. Bobby Cox retiring
2. Jeff and Kelly (gone)
3. All the other scrubs and Bobby favorites like Norton gone

It maybe worth it?

All I know is that I hope he’s not here to jeopardize the development of Schafer, Heyward, Freeman, Johnson and Hicks.

I’m with CB and Braveheart on Anderson. This clearly has become an issue of self-respect for the organization. If the Braves don’t see it that way, the rest of baseball will if it doesn’t already. Who would want to play for a team that enables a player who is clearly phoning it in?

I don’t agree about Johnson. I think is is trying and one of his problems is that he’s pressing.

Jason BMac battling the flu. The dizziness was probably from dehydration. Get an IV or two sit and rest.

Yeah…also, when you’re not feeling good, get up and down like a catcher does cann make you light-headed/dizzy. Glad he didn’t play last night. Hopefully he cann play today like he plans to.

That’s how he was able to come in and get you that 2B. And yes that 2B was probably just for you. I think he might be trying to make up… LOL!!!

Well, that was a great way to start making up! :D Too bad nobody was on base…But I’ll take it! Just wish they coulda rallied for more runs there.

Hey, and he just needs 34 more doubles to break the Record for Most Doubles in a Single Season By a Catcher (RMDSSBC)! Not sure what he’s on pace for yet…

Hey, Tom O, am I s’posed to translate BAS? ‘Cause if it has to do with Anders, I’m not sure that I want to…

“This is a team that has no hitters in the NL’s top 10 in average, OPS (McCann doesn’t have at-bats to qualify yet) or slugging, and no pitchers near the top in wins (15 pitchers have seven or more wins including Lowe, who’s tied with seven others for eighth with seven wins, but who has the second-highest ERA in the league this month).”

You just described a 4th place team. It’s now almost July and even if they are still only 4 games out, does anybody really think this team is going to be anything other than what we’ve seen so far? The Braves will never fire Bobby in mid-season so this team will continue to muddle along just below .500 until the inevitable realization that we are stuck in 4th place.

Welcome to the new Braves of Liberty Media and Frank Wren-GM.

Let’s not bash the Red Sox fans. They are filling up Turner Field for the first time this year. They are renting hotel rooms and spending money at restaurants. Do you remember how bad attendance was last year with the weekend contruction on the downtown connector? This is a good weekend for the Atlanta economy.

Well, at least the Braves can be thankful they didn’t trade for Xavier Nady — his rehab was shut down yesterday after he felt pain in the throwing elbow again. Looks like he’s done for the year.

So as bad as things seem, imagine if the Braves had traded for, say, Peavy and Nady. Yikes.

I must be reading the blog to much. All the talking about trading this guy and that one… Arm chairing GM. I was very frustrated by the game last night. I poured it ong Chipper. I don’t usually do that. I always try to be objective. Any way, i guess due to al the GMing on the blog, My subconcious allowed for me to dream last night that I was the GM. Now, I don’t know how all that works, the money, the pieces fitting together. So, I guess someone on here will come along and correct me.

Here goes, I dreamt lastnight that ATL traded Chipper to Bos to play for a WS with Smoltzie. ATL got Bucholtz and a throw in back. The only trade made during the season. IN the off season, ATL made 2 moves. THey traded Bucholtz and Lowe to Texas for Nelson Cruz and a couple of minor leaugers to restoch ATL’s minors. They also traded Francouer and and a throw in to KC for Teahen. That was it.so, going into 2010 ATL had a roster that looked like this:
LF McLouth
CF Schaefer
RF Cruz
1B Kotchman
2B KJ
SS Escobar
3B Teahen
C McCann
RESERVES:
Diaz
Prado
Infante
Ross
Canizeres
ROTATION:
Huddy
Vasquez
JJ
Hanson
KK
BP:
Gonzo
Soriano
Moylan
Medlen
O’Flaherty
Acosta
Alas, I know it’s just a dream, and I also no I am not perfect in being a GM. Afterall it was just a dream. Opinions and critques are welcomed.

Last night we saw a definite playoff team. Do we even resemble that team? No I am not talking about the score. JJ kept us in the game as usual. I am talking about the talent and the way they play the game. I was waiting for their LF to not back up a ground ball but somehow that did not happen.

tpm: Red Sox fans bring a different vibe to Turner Field than Yanks fans did. Or at least it seemed that way to me and to two people I talked to who’d sat out in the crowds last night and for two of the Yankees games. Not nearly as — how do we say this nicely — raucous a crowd? Someone else said not as obnoxious, but, hey, I’ll stop short of that.
