The Braves are going to want more permanant solution in the outfield regardless is Heyward is ready next yr or the year after. Schafer will go to center, McLouth in left(mainly b/c of a avg arm) and someone to take over right field.

Bobby’s Cox-

My main thing with Prado (and I will admit up front I am a huge KJ fan) is that I am not sold on the idea that he is an upgrade, especially at 2nd base. Sure he can hit well (at times) in limited action, but I just don’t think that over an entire season he would be that much better. I’ve also always thought he looks way more comfortable at 3rd, from a defensive standpoint (is that his natural position? Does he even have a “natural” position?), plus I think he is so valuable as a utility guy because he can play so many different positions. Granted, if KJ doesn’t start playing better, onviously something will have to be done, and maybe Prado gets more playing time and will change my mind, but until then I’m just not ready to give him the everyday job.
(I do like him, by the way :) I just prefer him in his current role)

Prado has done nothing but consitently produce base hits, often big ones. He’s made many outstanding plays at 3rd and at 2nd, and has even handled first base. I think the argument in favor of KJ is over at this point. He should be the one backing up Prado. Even if he is just a singles hitter, we need a steadier presence at the plate than KJ who has an outstanding 2 days, then goes on a 2 month slump. Not to mention, I don’t remember Prado fooking up any of the defensive plays that he was supposed to make. could be wrong, but i dont recall any.

DOB,

Just had to post to say kudos on the music pic of J.R. Like that one a lot. I actually just got a book of Irish poems yesterday and it included “The Cremation of Sam McGee” on it. Reminded me that there’s a recording of Cash reading that long poem. It’s really cool to hear – near the end of his life, I think, but can’t remember what it’s on.

Anyways, that pic’s gotta be a good omen for this series. Here’s to the Bravos on this homestand – hey, in this division, anything’s possible with just a teensy, little roll….

Not sure if this has been discussed or not, but I still think the Braves should make a run at Mark Derosa. you package Medlen or Reyes with Johnson and an A ball prospect and bring him over to play second. That solidifies your lineup right there. if you can’t make a run after that, then there are bigger problems and the team needs to just be rebuilt

say what you will about KJ, but at least he has pretty good plate discipline – unlike francine. I’ll take effort in working the count, getting a good pitch to hit – if he doesn’t get a hit, ok…francine just drives me crazy – doesn’t get situational hitting, no discipline – a hit for him is like winning a lottery scratch-off ticket. happy when it happens, but don’t expect it.

Tonight is Tommy Hanson’s chance to shine and shut down the Yankee’s powerful lineup.

Yeah they are struggling a bit on the road, but it’s still a loaded lineup top to bottom with powerful veteran hitters.

Meanwhile, Braves get to tee off on Wang…who has an unbelievably “stellar” over .400 against average. That’s just wow. Come on Braves, get those “by now famous 4 runs or more” from this bum before the 5th inning and let’s get this 1st game and start the series off with a win.

Two pages back…person who brought the MLB chat “new” that

1. Willingham is available…of course he is. Nats have too many OF-ers and Josh seems to be constantly hurt – Although, when healthy he is the kind of RH bat that can hit for solid power numbers.

Unless Jeff discovers a miracle power stretch in his game…I would hope the Braves make the phone call and see what would it take to acquire Josh. If anything…Josh can definitely man one of the corner OF spots in 2010 (with Anderson and Jeff both most likely gone).

2. Luke Scott – I’ve been calling for Luke Scott for a while now – but if it’s “going to take a lot” etc…I’d pass on that. I hope the Braves DO NOT overpay for anyone just to make a run for 2009.

I know nobody wants to admit it, but we are 1-2 years away from fully being able to compete and have our own big time projected hitters to be in our every day lineup. Just like Howard and Utley with the Phils.

Thank goodness Prado was in last night to extend the inning with his single, enabling the Braves to plate their 2nd run.

Cox is the only manager in the Bigs at this moment in time that would be starting KJ over Prado. Cox is well past his prime. I believe that the vast majority of other Major League managers would have won another 4 or 5 games for the Braves had they been managing instead of Cox.

Between Cox not going with the hot hitter (remember Infante batting around .340 and started only 18 of 36 games, even though he produced virtually every time he played?) and his mismanagement of the bullpen I believe 4 to 5 more wins is easy to justify.

I’m not willing to give up Melden that “easy”. To me that’s over paying for DeRosa. Take Medlen out of it and offer someone else.

I’ve been tough on Wren for the way he handled the Smoltz and Glavine situations, and for being foolish enough to “bank” on Jeff, Kelly and Garret to have above ave. productive years. However one thing that Wren has NOT done, is morgage the future for “the right now”.

Getting Nate McLouth was a move for now and the next 3 years.

If, IF a trade happens, I surely hope the Braves can keep whoever they trade for, for a period more than just the rest of this year.

Good to see Escobar “man up” for tonight’s game.

Yunel needs to realize that playing with some injuries and pain is going to be part of the job for the rest of 2009.

The team needs him. Let’s see how much of a “team guy” he really is. Good to see him playing tonight.

If last night proved anything, is that as overwhelmed as Jordan Schafer looked versus major league pitching, Hernandez is in the same boat. Braves can’t win without Yunel in there on a daily basis.

Anyone not sold on Prado, I have an optometrist I can refer you to, and anyone who still enjoys watching Kelly play everyday and likes what they see, I have an igloo here I would like to sell you.

Sadly, Prado is playing much better injured than Kelly plays at 100% and once again as usual, Bobby just doesn’t have the sense to play the right guy…or as Joe Simpson said, the “hot hand”.

To pass the time, here’s some metaphors on how I feel about the coaching staff in general and mainly Bobby, TP, and Snitker…as they are the main reasons why we’ve lost 12 1-run contests and why we’re still 3 games under .500:

-Not the sharpest knives in the drawer
-Proof that evolution CAN go in reverse
-a few sandwiches short of a picnic
-a few French fries short of a happy meal
-Gates are down, the lights are flashing, but the train isn’t coming

Well, you get the point…

Oh, and CA, very VERY disappointed in you…

faninva,

This is a bad year to say that KJ has good plate discipline. He has in the past yes, and last night showed a glimpse that maybe he’s coming out of his slump by working to nice walks. However, as DOB pointed out, KJ has a .297 OBP in his past 18 games, which astonishingly happens to be the same his putrid season OBP in 62 games this year. His BB rate is down to the lowest it’s ever been. In 2005 he had a BB% of 12%, which increased to 13% in 2007. then fell to 8.5% last year, and is at a 8% clip this season.

His plate discipline hasn’t been anything what it was in the past. The only good news is that his K% decreases every year (22.5% in 2005, 19.2% in 2007, 18.4% in 2008, and now 14.9% this year). Kelly is trying to put the bat on the ball to get some hits (lower K%), but he’s sacrificing working the count (less walks). Pressing too much? I think he is.

P-Town Brave-

I didn’t mean I wasn’t sold on Prado as a player, just not as an everyday 2nd baseman. And I actually didn’t say anything about KJ’s play, other then obviously if he continues to play poorly something has to be done. I do like Prado. I don’t know if he would be an upgrade at 2nd on a regular basis. I know there is not really a huge sample size to pull from (dude’s only played 176 games in 4 years, and only 43 at 2nd) but I am just not ready to declare Martin Prado as a great option as an everyday guy…if he gets the chance to play on a more regular basis and proves otherwise, I will be happy I was wrong. I also think he’s much better defensively at 3rd then at 2nd. :)

P-Town Brave, I agree with you 100 percent on Prado KJ. It’s not even debatable whose better. Just compare their averages, obp, slugging, and ops the last two seasons. Plus Prado does all those little things that don’t show up in the box score that win ball games. Case and point, the in between hop that he stayed with in Toronto to end the game. He brings some swagger and enthusiasism that this team desperately needs. I’m not ready to give up on this team yet, they’ve showed they could hang with the best. Play Prado and anyone over Francouer and they’ll start to do it more consistently. And I’m one of those guys who have always defended Cox but he’s got to make the switch. KJohnson has had more than enough time to show what he could do and he failed as the everyday 2b. I didn’t think he was very good last year, just got hot the last six weeks when the games didn’t matter anymore and that completely skewed his stats. Quite frankly, the lackadasical attitude that KJ shows belongs in Pittsburgh with Adam Laroche

The additional 2 years of having him at a reasonable rate is what this team needs. It’ll bring stability in the OF.

He’s dropped the ball every year…it should be Prado’s turn…and yeah, not only stat wise, but baseball IQ wise and intangible wise, Prado has Kelly beat in every aspect.

Its his time…I just wish the old man would realize that!

I hate seeing other teams fans overtake the Ted. Can someone please tell me why no one goes to Braves games. And don’t tell me it’s because the suck the last few years. This was going on for playoff games back in the day. I just don’t get it. If I lived in ATL, I would go to at least half of the home games. Tickets aren’t even expensive, yet no one shows up. It’s embarassing.

I think a lot of the reason that the Yankee fans are overtaking the seats tonight is b/c of the rule that the Braves had earlier in the season where you had to buy tickets for another game too. Yankee fans come in and buy a ticket for this game and a cheap one for another one, but Braves fans didn’t want to do that. I think the Braves shot themselves in the foot there.

It’s probably cheaper for them to fly to Atlanta and go to Turner Field than to try to go to new Yankee Stadium.

Bobby’s C.

No, you’re right. I was just comparing KJ to Frenchy. I agree KJ is having a bad year and I’m not a huge fan, but when he comes to the plate, at least he’s giving himself a decent change – like i said, if he doesn’t get a hit, i can forgive him more so than i can Frenchy, who just doesn’t have any discipline at all.

Regarding OBP, it can sometimes be misleading – Kotchman for instance has been smoking the ball lately but doesn’t have much to show for it. He’s smoking the ball right at people.
