Epinephrine…………..so what if Francoeur got “robbed” of a double by Ellsbury on Saturday? That pitch was a hanger from Beckett. It should have been hit our of the ball park. Also, in the 8th inning of that game with runners on 1st and 2nd and 1 out, Beckett threw another hanger that had “hit my a$$ over the Green Monster” written all over it. Instead he pulls it fouls. The next pitch he hits into an inning ending double play.

Francoeur has absolutely NO POWER anymore. If his “upside” is being a singles hitter who bats .250………..then cut his a$$ right now. 1 homer and 1 double in 57 at-bats in the month of June. PATHETIC. 15 homers in his last 848 at bats……even more PATHETIC.

I sure don’t know anything about baseball, but it doesn’t look like a good idea to trade one of our known entities. We know that Vazquez can pitch and it’s not his fault he doesn’t have a better W-L record. We also know he wants to pitch for the Braves. Hudson? We don’t know that he can pitch after his surgery, and we don’t know the future prospects of signing him with the options. Do we know that he wants to pitch for the Braves since John Smoltz is gone as well as Glavine? They were all considered big time pitchers and it was comfortable for him in that environment.Perhaps we should be thinking about the loss of Hudson rather than Vazquez

From the previous blog:

I’d Rather Go after Vlad Guerrero, If and Only if the Angels eat up some of his salary…

Vlad is gimpy in the field – he would best be suited in the AL where he can DH. Plus his numbers this year are god awful:

Epinphrine, I figured as much (about you responding to me), but like I said. I spent too much time typing the post to dump it. :-)

As for the Philies? I don’t know. Because like the “respect” I always expected from other teams about the Braves being the champions until somebody knocks them off, I say the Phillies are still the team to beat until proven otherwise. Recent trends shows that they are capable of playing good ball when they need to against teams chasing them, and that the Braves are not. Neither are the Mets.

But like I said. I agree with you. On paper, we should be killing this division. Give us one more bat (RH) and our odds go up considerably. Give us two more bats (as long as one of them being replaced is Jeff’s) and we run away with this division.

Keep running KJ and Jeff out there expecting things to “turn around”, and our biggest worry should be about staying ahead of the Nats. Not chasing the Phils, Mets and Marlins.

Wren needs to act, and act fast. No way can he sit around and expect a late “Rockies” like push in September. Nip it in the bud. Or watch meaningless games after August 1st.

BTW, sorry for the “tone” in the last post. Got defensive when I thought it was aimed at me (something about seeing the words “doom and gloom” make me think people are talking to me :-) ).

Last 7 days: GA

G-AB-R-H-2B-3B-HR-RBI-BB-SO-SB-CS–AVG–OBP–SLG-OPS
6-19-2-9–1–0–0—6–1–1–0–0-.474-.476-.526-1.003

GA has been doing very well in the last few weeks (up to .280/.313/.385 3HR 24RBI) and even better the last week as you can see from above. As others have pointed out, you don’t need a lot of HR-hitting guys on the team, just guys that hit well in situaional opportunities. GA has been less and less of the Braves’ offensive problem as the season has gone along. Since he makes $2.5M, he is probably starting to produce exactly what he is being paid. Since the Braves can not upgrade LF, RF AND 2B (will leave 1B out of the discussion for now), I would concentrate on getting a guy like DeRosa who can play ALL of those positions and let him play every day depending on who gets the day off in RF and 2B.

I’m with you. The team, as poorly as they have played, could end up on top of the NL East. A lot of if’s haveto happen, but they could based on exactly what you pointed out. We assume a lot, but Franceour could bounce out of his three year slump. Garrett could begin to hustle a little more and continue his hitting. The very best if, IMO, is that Kelly could start hitting. He has a better chance of Franceour unless he has already surcombed to the pressure.

“Braves will NOT spend money on the bullpen.” Vol4ever

The reason for this is that they shouldn’t. For every Trevor Hoffman, there are 5 Eric Gagnes. If you have the money to throw around, go for it, but that money is usually spent more wisely for other needs. Relievers have a very short shelf life in most cases. The Braves develop pitchers well, and are good at finding cheap, effective releivers.

Yeah. Don’t sign KK. Didn’t need Vazquez, needed a bat. Shouldn’t count on Jeff. Move KJ for a RH bat. Move KJ to LF, etc…..”

And you know what? Some of us got ripped THEN for “first guessing” or suggesting such stupidity. 22 HR and 59 RBI later, I think that Ibanez would look just FINE in our lineup playing LF. Still.

And before you think it’s the “bandbox” in Philly padding his stats. Check out his home/road splits. Dude’s tearing it up on the road (at a higher pace than in Philly).

I think that’s why most of us are frustrated. If the team is “close” as most of us think they are (me included), then let’s get this said player to put us in a position to win the division. If they are not “close”, then bring some young talent up (as they’ve done with Hanson and Medlen) let them take their lumps now so they can be better next year.

How about this for a trade idea . How about trading mike gonzalez for chone figgins. The Angels are looking for a good reliever and the Braves need another hitter. Both are free agents at the end of the year. He is not a power hitter but if you can not get a power hitter then get a true leadoff man. This team needs more speed. He could play second for Kelly. I don’t know if he is truely available but I read on mlbtraderumors.com that the Angels were willing to trade anyone in their infield for pitching. Lastly, he is from Georgia so maybe he will resign with the braves after the season. If he doesn’t stay then you get a draft pick just like you would with gonzalez. This allows the Braves to get a player that can really help us now and also see if he likes it enough to resign with us. Lets be honest, I don’t see the braves signing both gonzalez and soriano when the season ends. There is too many teams looking for closers.

I really don’t think GA cost us too many runs in Boston. The umpire blowing the call then O’Flaherty throwing a curveball to a lineup that couldn’t touch a fastball yesterday lost that for us. Anybody notice how many good swings the RedSox had all weekend off a FB? Not many.

I think Bay, and that’s it.

Most their hits were offspeed pitches (Nick Green’s bomb was a fastball, though).

JD Drew swings through a first pitch fastball, takes strike two on a FB then obviously was looking for a CB (since he took the same pitch twice, Ump froze on 0-2).

What do we think JD Drew’s looking for against a lefty, fastballs? All good LH hitters I hit with always looked curveball b/c that’s all they saw from LHP. Curveballs can be pretty easy to hit if you see it up out of the hand.

getsomepower,

I think they are doing fine bringing up the younger players at this point. Schafer was either hurt or not ready to hit in the bigs, and I was one of the few that wanted to see him start in AAA. I am as frustrated as anyone, but I don’t see the “fix” available right now. It’s going to have to be close to the deadline before we find out everyone that is available, and I think our best chance to re-tool the offense and make a run is next season.

The player that would be a “fix” could be available at the deadline, or may not be available until this winter. You have to remember that it’s not just about guys who are free agents, but guys that are blocking young talent, fallen out of favor with management, and a host of other reasons, will be available this winter.

I’m trying to come up with an answer to the problems myself, but I think next season at this time we’ll see Kotchman’s name in a lot of trade rumors, as well as Francoeur (if he’s still here). With Freeman and Heyward almost ready, and Schafer ready next year (if not sooner) you’d then have an OF of Heyward, Schafer, McLouth. You’d also have an IF of Freeman, KJ/Prado, Escobar, Chipper.

I think the best shot that they have is to wait and play it out.

I don’t think even the Phillies front office could have anticipated the monster season Ibanez has put together. So I’m pretty OK with my winter stance that he was too expensive – of course, his production has more than matched his salary, but who knew that type of year was coming from him? Not to mention he’s 37 – he looked like a high priced injury risk.

Dunn, on the other hand would have been a better pick up than GA and KK (combined salary of ~$9 million), and his numbers were predictable given his production the past few years. I also was against signing Dunn, but that was after it was clear we didn’t have the payroll to sign him.

Would Wren have signed Dunn for 2 years @ $10 mill per instead of KK for 3 years at ~$7 mill per? Probably, but at the time he signed KK, Dunn’s price tag was MUCH higher. It was only towards the end of the offseason that Dunn got desperate and took the Nationals offer, which if I recall was on the table for most of the offseason, but Dunn expected to find a better deal that never materialized.

“you play prado the majority of the time in place of kelly, and youre an improved team”

I hate this. I hate this because it is true and I am not a Marteen fan. But KJ has burned the last ember of the bridge. Not even one of his patented september hot streaks is going to change my mind. That guy needs to go.

I am pulling for him to turn it around as well, I don’t want to see another prospect fail as so many have before….

Everybody has a different opinion about how to fix the Braves proving once again that nobody has a clue. Nice entertainment though. everything from making Hudson a closer to trading the manager for another manager. Where do these people come from, the government?

John Deere Green,

Dunn would be the perfect clean up hitter on this team. Doesn’t matter that he hits lefty, he hits for power. That is something this team lacks.

As far as Schafer, I’m still going with you being wrong on it. The kid can rake, he just needs to work on some things in AAA. He didn’t spend enough time in AA last season, and that hurt him.

Again, I was one of the few who wanted to see him start in AAA this season, even after he out hit Anderson. I was somewhat worried that he wasn’t ready. I think if he was tearing it up in AAA right now we’d have Anderson to trade for another piece of the puzzle.

It’s a little early to consider Schafer a bust. He’s 22 and he wasn’t ready. He will not rot away in the minors for years to come. I wonder if you even like the Braves. For all you say about Dunn, you have done some serious whiffing on this blog.

“I don’t think even the Phillies front office could have anticipated the monster season Ibanez has put together.”

Phillies got really, really lucky. I can’t imagine he will be putting up the same number when he turns 39 in 2011. Plus, I’d bet we see more aches and pains from Ibanez during this deal. He has been worth every penny this season. But I’d bet he won’t be in two years.

i would like nothing more than for Schafer to become what is expected of him, however the juice incident didn’t endear him to me….

They might take Soriano. I don’t see two lefties coming out of the pen for them at the end of the game.

How about Juan Rivera?

I’d laugh if the make-up game got rained out. That’d be hilarious.

You should be able to trade managers. No reason you shouldn’t be able to.

Not that it’s an excuse for our rather ugly play, but the weather has been kicking our a$$ this season!

getsomepower,

I like Juan Rivera actually. Maybe Gary Matthews Jr. is on the block? I know he was upset with his playing time this season……

Pennski…………..I never said that it was easy to hit home runs. However these guys are supposed to be Major Leaguers. Players at this level are supposed to hit home runs. Jeff Francoeur, who plays every day and gets 600 at-bats in a season, should have more than 15 homers in his last 848 at-bats. Plus he is being paid $3.375 mil this season. And of course he is in line to get $6-7 mil in salary arbitration next year. I have every right “as a Braves fan” to question Francoeur’s ability to hit Major League pitching.
