ncscoots — if Chipper and Pujols and Lincecum and Teixiera and … Willie, Mickey, and the Duke decided to play a game in the pasture on the outskirts of town — for the pure love of the game — would you kick in a buck and go and watch?
The history of major league baseball is rife with cheap, abusive owners who, due to the reserve clause, mandated players either play at the salary they dictated, or go back to the swing hammers in the mines. The players had no recourse. Now, the ugly old robber barons of yore are … Insurance Companies, or something like that, taking a write-off for accounting purposes, still sending marginal players back into … what … selling Lady Kenmores at Sears.
It is the GAME, nothing less. And the game is the PLAYERS.
KJ, Go the Other way Baby…!
How exactly was that McLouth’s fault. He almost had it. He was about to ram into the wall.
Lowe needs to stop giving up bombs to center field.
you are right. not arguing that one, just that the wild pitch was not the reason he scored- he would have scored regardless of weither he was on 2nd or 3rd
June 20th, 20098:28 pm
Maybe McClouth can atone here
rob from sc
since Bobby Cox keeps Johnson and Francoeur in there even trhough they suck, when Schafer heals we should call him up for his D in CF.
Guess I better stop listening to these announcers and pay better attention.
Joe Simpson makes tons of excuses for KJ and Francoeur
I'm Josh Beckett
If the official scorer gave Lowell an error on Chipper’s bad hop single last night, why did JV get a double in that last inning instead of charging McLouth with an error? Ball was in McLouth’s glove all the way.
June 20th, 20098:29 pm
9 pitch inning, patience .. still nowhere to be found.
June 20th, 20098:30 pm
Oh well on the bright side at least we don’t have to worry about a DH tomorrow.
The bottom of this lineup is garbage
A least A REAL pitcher is shuting us out this time
Thats the ballgame.
Does the official scorer have access to instant replays on TV and such?
June 20th, 20098:31 pm
The O’s increase their lead 2-0 now in the 6th.
June 20th, 20098:32 pm
They should probably try and win tonight. Since JJ doesn’t get much run support, if they lose tonight the chances of winning the series with a win tomorrow is kinda low.
J.D. Drew with a well-struck drive off the Mohnstah.
Nice effort there, Loaf Bread.
Heyward is playing CF tonight. He has played quite a bit of Center Field this season.
June 20th, 20098:33 pm
The AWFense Sucks One Again…I can Understand Tonight becuz we are going against J. Beckett…But When The AWFense Sucks against garbage Pitchers of the league is what makes me get Violent…! So I’m Not that P’d Off about the performance tonight…
Gotta Go to Zaxby’s BRB…
Lowe needs to stop giving up bombs to center field
and he gives up one to the first batter in the 6th
“Braves trail by a run, so I’ll vamoose before the doom and gloom erupts”
Bet you only accept compliments in your personal life as well. Nothing like having a completely objective look at life huh?
June 20th, 20098:34 pm
Steve from Ohio
Is Lowe still an ACE?
I don’t think so
Get him out Bobby, hes done.
Biggest difference between the two pitchers tonight…The Saux are making Lowe work…the Braves…well, not so much.
This one might be history.
June 20th, 20098:35 pm
Bennett and O’Flaherty up in ‘pen.
That’s three doubles and a hard-hit single in the last five BoSox at-bats … before that flyout.
Lowe has thrown 1 Changeup and about 4 curves. They are sitting on his sinker.
Lowe is throwing a lot more balls than Beckett though
At least that was their first single
Steve from OH
June 20th, 20098:36 pm
Uhh, when have I ever called Lowe an ace? And how is he doing poorly tonight?
okay, i think some of us should stop watching. I was out at the Bad Co concert last night and the boys got the job done. I actually get to watch on PTV tonight since Hubby is out at a car show with a buddy, and they are blowing it. No, check that, it’s like they didn’t even show up.
Call Me A Pessimist but Our AWFense Quits when they get down by 2 runs……
We Will Win 2morrow, “Bank On It!”
Time to listen to some old Queen Latifah!
Lowe outpitched by Kawakami, sad
June 20th, 20098:37 pm
Thanks for the contributions, guys
Lowe has become our #5 starter, sad.
McSloppy Is Off Those Roids..! That was a homer 5 years ago….
You called him an ace when I bashed him after the Baltimore start. He doesn’t mix his pitches. 80% or more sinkers. He needs to change his approach.
June 20th, 20098:38 pm
June 20th, 20098:39 pm
Hey…really…6 innings and only 2 runs against the Sox is not bad. Not Lowe’s fault if we lose.
I don’t dislike Lowe, but can he be any dumber. He has left his sinker up the last 2 innings. Throw something else.
June 20th, 20098:40 pm
Turned the game on late so maybe I missed something but it seems odd that Diaz is back on the bench. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but he started 2 straight games and the Braves score 7 and 8 runs and then inexplicably, he is back on the bench.
Strange days indeed
June 20th, 20098:41 pm
It was a good start. I just can’t stand it when people call Lowe an Ace. He is a 2 or 3 starter. Beckett is an Ace.
2 runs and 5 hits in 6 innings against the Red Sox….you guys are pretty rough.
That at-bat sums up the Braves this season.
Escobar ,just waive a white flag next time lol
Whew…only 69 pitches after than K…dominating the lineup tonight.
June 20th, 20098:42 pm
It’s over people….face it.
This one’s in the can.
Yeah, I hate it too.
“Lowe outpitched by Kawakami, sad”
I’d say Matsuzaka outpitched by Beckett. Look at the scoreboard, we’re giving Lowe a ZERO spot for run support. Three singles, nothing else against Beckett.
This game goes to the point where we needed him to show up against Baltimore. He went out and gave the game away.
No, I took issue with your assertion that he gives up “too many baserunners” and TnBrian’s assertion that his opening day start was his only dominant start.
Have you even been watching the game, btw? The “80% sinkers” has worked for him tonight and over the course of his career. I don’t understand why giving up 2 runs over 6 innings is a damnable offense on this board. And “change his approach?” You mean the approach that has produced a career 3.77 ERA and and ERA of 3.24 last season? LOL! I’m sure he’ll get right on that. [Sarcasm]
If you really must know, I think Lowe is a 1B on a good day and a good #2 on a consistent basis. I don’t think I’ve said too much that hasn’t been in that vein since his signing. If I have, then see the above for clarification.
June 20th, 20098:43 pm
Please retire Chipper, your done.
O’Flaherty shouldn’t have any trouble getting a drink in Southie, should he want one.
And just what in hell is “Mohnstah?” Mahnstah … maybe, if you chose to spell it phonetically.
To answer the original musical question … yes, this is just a tease from the last two games. We’ve seen Garret Anderson’s contribution for the month. He will now hibernate again. Johnson is a mess at the plate. He’s had bad streaks before. But this is a nosedive. Francoeur is treading water at the plate — just enough to make you think he’s close to finding his stroke but just far enough away to make you think he’s closing to going under too.
There are still some very suspect pieces in the bullpen. And I think Cox, if not the rest of the Braves brass, is at their wit’s end with Escobar. A very talented player to be sure but still plays with his head lodged between his buttocks on too many occasions. Prado is good bench player but isn’t an everyday guy. Kotchman has a great glove but his offense has yet to translate to the new league.
And very little help appears to be on the way. You go to the park with the team you have, not the team you want. This is the team they have, with little prospect of any major upgrades coming.
June 20th, 20098:44 pm
Good thing Bobby’s warming up the bullpen. I was hoping we could lose by 10.
June 20th, 20098:45 pm
Beckett just owns this team. His ERA is still over 4 this year. With TP as coach, they will never make the adjustments necessary to beat him.
That win lastnite was big because it appears the offense has gone into hibernation against Beckett.
June 20th, 20098:46 pm
You guys are talking like you’re expecting Lowe to be Superman, and acting like he just pitched like Kolb. He can only do so much.
Aaaarrrrg!! Dangit, I can’t stand strikeouts!
BMac’s K’s have come in pairs a lot this year…
Lowe usually does not put up back-to-back stinkers…figured this would happen tonight.
Steve from OH
How many sinkers have hit the monster. Are you watching the game. He has been hit hard. In the second inning all three outs were crushed. Face it Lowe is not a dominate pitcher.
June 20th, 20098:47 pm
The problem is…Beckett doesn’t put up back-to-back stinkers either.
And why do you keep calling them the Orioles?
June 20th, 20098:48 pm
He is a solid pitcher. However he is not a true #1. He is not a stopper. There are only a select number of aces in major league baseball.
I can’t believe Cox sent Lowe back out there.. He’s pitched a good ball game but is out of gas.
his last start against the Orioles needed to be a win and he didn’t show up
June 20th, 20098:49 pm
Tonight is a night you cant really get on the Braves offensively. Becket is simply ON tonight. He’s got dominant stuff and his stuff is virtually unhittable tonight. Good pitching will beat good hitting any day of the week. If Dice K had done this last night, then I could see Braves fans complaining. However tonight has to be chalked up to being one of those nights where the 1927 Yankees would have been shut out by Becket.
It’s great to be back!
2-0 Orioles top of the 7th.
June 20th, 20098:50 pm
Beckett’s ERA is above 4 mainly because he had a horrific April- ERA over 7.00 He’s been very good since then, given up more then 3 runs only once since April (which was his last one actually)
If we have a Ace it is Vazquez
Less Hits allowed
Way more K’s
Hey Steve was that another quality sinker
I know he’s not a true ace…I just don’t like people acting like he just had one of the biggest meltdowns in ML history.
But then again, I guess this blog has never been a place for underreacting
June 20th, 20098:51 pm
It came unraveled quickly for Lowe. They’re hitting some shots now, teeing off
Avoid the rush, hate Nick Green early.
Put me in coach, I’m ready to play
I’m looking at Lowe’s line (so far) of 6 1/3 innings, 7 hits, 2ER, 1BB, 2K, and 11 groundouts and thinking that it is pretty doggone good for a pitcher that needs to “change his approach.”
And I’m thinking that the 2ER should actually be 1ER due to McLouth’s misplay in center.
We need Hanson to develop into a true ace.
The wrong catcher is hitting doubles…
Chop It Up All-Star
June 20th, 20098:52 pm
Classy fans in Boston, no question about it.
Another big standing O for Lowe as he left field, tipped his cap to them.
Plain and simple, Lowe needs to get hitters off his sinker.
June 20th, 20098:53 pm
Not really sure why Lowe was even out there this inning.
I was a little surprised Cox sent Lowe back out there.
Ok, if you think Vazquez is our ace (right now he is, or JJ) that’s fine. You’re coming at me for something I didn’t say and topping it off with saying stupid things like Lowe needs to change his approach. Calm down, dude. He’s a good pitcher. If you don’t think so, then you’re wrong. And I don’t say that much.
I can live wth this loss because of Beckett, especially if the Phills lose.
Bobby Cox Hat Tipping Club
Guess Bobby will get to tip his hat again in the post game interview.
June 20th, 20098:54 pm
If Bobby hadn’t use Soriano and Gonzalez the last couple of days, this would’ve been a good situation to bring one of them, to try to prevent the Red Sucks to increase the lead. Instead, is Bennett. Hopefully, a double play is in order.
rob from sc – take a breath
Top of the 7th, no outs, bases loaded, Baltimore has 13 HITS and 4 WALKS, yet is only up 2-0.
My point is that I don’t feel secured of a victory when he pitches. He is an above average pitcher. My problem is with Steve who continues to call Lowe a dominant pitcher. His ERA is above 4.
Well if we lose tonite no harm done, Phils down 2-0 7th, Mets lossed 3-1.
Derek doesn’t need to hang his head. Nate catches that……it’s a tie ballgame.
June 20th, 20098:55 pm
Tipping the cap to the old team? You play for US now Lowe.
You honestly don’t believe he needs to throw more breaking balls
Don’t think anyone in baseball would be surprised that the Sox bounced back with a “W” tonight.
June 20th, 20098:56 pm
Wow, if the Orioles were in National League East, they would have the division wrapped up by now.
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
