certainly so far this year anyway. the Sox were so dismayed by the punchless Braves scoring almost at will off him that they are skipping him next time around at least. Very very few Japanese players have been good enough to come over here and have successful years on a consistent basis, I’m not sure yet whether Dice-K is gonna be one of them.

Braveheart……………Lets compare the starting rotation at the beginning of both 2008 and 2009:
2008…..(1).Tim Hudson……….$15.5 mil
…………(2).John Smoltz………$14.0 mil
…………(3).Tom Glavine………$ 8.0 mil
…………(4).Mike Hampton……$15.0 mil
…………(5).Jair Jurrgens………$ 0.394 mil
That totals out to be $52.894 mil. And what did the Braves get for that? 84 starts, 32-27 record, 499 innings pitched, 216 earned runs, 3.97 ERA. That averages out to be 5.94 innings pitched per start.
2009……..(1). Derek Lowe………….$15.0 mil
……………(2). Javier Vazquez………$11.5 mil
……………(3). Jair Jurrgens…………$ 0.45 mil
……………(4). Kenshin Kawakami…$8.34 mil
……………(5). Tom Glavine………….$1.0 mil
That comes to a total of $36.29 mil. So what have we gotten so far for that? 55 starts, 20-21, 334 innings pitched, 137 earned runs for an ERA of 3.69. They are averaging 6.07 innings pitched per start. And there are still 96 games left in the season.
Even when you factor in Hudson’s $15.5 mil that he is making this year, the Braves are getting much more bang for the buck when it comes to our starting pitching. That $15.5 mil is coming off the books at the end of the season. I seriously doubt that the Braves exercise Hudson’s option next year. That would be foolish to pay a starting pitcher $13 mil coming off elbow surgery. I would rather use Hudson’s salary on acquiring a big bat. The Braves have starting pitching.
If Frank Wren cant swing a good trade before the trading deadline for a big bat, then I feel that he will use this off season to fix the offense. The Braves, for the first time in a number of years, will be rid of bad contracts. They will have plenty of flexibility to fix the offense.

Dice-K may be pitching bad this year, however he helped them win the World Series in 2007. The Red Sox have the financial flexibility to work with him on working out his troubles this year. He is durable and can pitch a lot of innings. I seriously doubt that the Red Sox are going to give up on him.
By the way the Civil Rights Game comes on around the same time the Braves game does..just FYI if we have a rain delay….and Hank Aaron is supposed to be in the booth for an inning.

Thanks. She was a great little Wrenny. She and her mate, Boogity (who died in March 2006), had three nests in our yard–one in ‘04 and two in ‘05. She let me get up close and look at the last batch of babies (she let me look at the other batches a little). I got some really good photos of the babies.
Here’s a link to the photos if you’re int’rested. This nest was in a gourd that we grew, dried, and hallowed out.
Has any heard anything regarding the likelihood of resigning Soriano and/or Gonzo? I know, I know. It’s way early, depends on how the pitch, how much they want, what the market looks like.
But have either they or the Braves mentioned anything in the way of their futures here? That’s whole ‘nother problem for next year if both depart. Moylan hasn’t quite looked like he’d be able to handle the 9th. And Bennett’s too awesome to use only as a closer. Then we’d have to wait at least 8 innings before we could watch him walk batters and groove pitches to good hitters.
Saturday night in Toledo, Ohio is like being nowhere at all.
All through the day how the hours rush by, you sit in the park and you watch the grass die.
Ah, but after the sunset, the dusk and the twilight, when shadows of night start to fall.
They roll back the sidewalk precisely at ten and people who live there are not seen again.
Just two lonely truckers from Great Falls, Montana and a salesman from places unknown
all huddled together in downtown, Toledo to spend their big night all alone.
You ask how I know of Toledo, Ohio? Well I spent a week there one day.
They’ve got entertainment to dazzle your eyes: go visit the bakery and watch the buns rise.
Ah, but let’s not forget that the folks of Toledo unselfishly gave us the scale.
No springs, honest weight, that’s the promise they made,
so smile and be thankful next time you get weighed.
And “wive and wet wive”, let this be our motto, let’s let the sleeping dogs
lie.
And here’s to the dogs of Toledo, Ohio, ladies, we bid you goodbye.

Speaking of birds. I have some feeders up outside my windows and there is a young Cardinal that keeps on flying into the window. It did it once and I thought it was just confused but then it proceeded to keep on smacking into the window for a solid 20 minutes! I tried to run it off because I didn’t want it to hurt itself but it keeps coming back trying to fly thru the window. It will also sit on the windowsill and look thru the window. I don’t know what it’s doing. I guess as long as it doesn’t hurt itself I shouldn’t worry about but it’s pretty funny.
his might not be as true now as it used to be. a good bullpen is a very important part of a ballclub nowadays, especailly set up men and closers. some guys are pegged as releivers from day one, id bet. even before tehy get a chance to fail as a starter. (DAP)
I do agree with you that middle relief and setup men are becoming more important, but for the most part no matter at what point they are being targeted as relievers it still means pretty much the same thing, in fact you could argue that the earlier that happens the more likely that they have a problem of one kind or another. Teams do not generally make relievers out of pitchers who they believe will be good starters even today. It might be changing a little bit lately, but even an average starter is perceived as way more valuable than a very good reliever except in the case of outstanding closers.
If most teams had a full staff of dependable starters then it would change more probably, but 25 out of 30 teams each year need reliable starters and that is where the emphasis will likely stay.
the female Cardinal is the fighter; not colored as brightly as the bright red male. When she sees her reflection, she thinks it is a rival and begins to try and fight it off. [Cardinals mate for life]
We actually had one who killed herself accidentally repeatedly attacking our deck window. I don’t know what you can do to stop it from happening…
Also…I don’t understand why more people of any color aren’t playing baseball…yeah you’re gone more but it seems like the easiest sport to make the most money off of….at least to me…
abwright – nothing against you because you’re just repeating what a lot of people say, but I can’t really buy that its so important to open the doors to the Japanese market by signing one guy. Money opens all doors and I’m pretty sure the next Japanese star won’t turn down a teams money because they weren’t previously “in the market”.
McFann, while I’m here, a note for the bird-lover. I have a hanging porch light in the portico of my front porch, and a couple of robins somehow managed to build a nest (and have it stay put) on the top left edge of the light. Darnedest thing I’ve ever seen. Nest always looks like it’s about to slip off, but there it sits, full of nestlings screaming for food.
It’s definitely a female. I have had Cardinals come to the feeders before and never has one done this before….I don’t know. I will keep trying to chase it off. I don’t want it to die!
I think they cann do it, too. Yesterday was a big boost, I think.
AndyC–
Sometimes those Cardinals see their reflection in the window, and they think it’s an intruder. They get pretty territorial in the Summer. It is kinda funny…I’ve never seen one get seriously hurt doing it. They will get a little stunned sometimes.
Course, sometimes they just think they cann fly through the window. Bird supply stores sell decals that you cann put on your windows that are s’posed to let birds know they can’t fly through…not sure how well they work.
FYI…….Doyle Brunson is at another final table at the World Series of Poker trying to tie Phil Helmuth for 11 bracelets. He’s playing in the $10,000 7 card stud high/low event. They are down to 8 players.
Once again, Matt Diaz is on the bench while Francoeur’s 4 homers in 246 at bats bats 8th.
It makes sense if you are trying to trade a guy Paul. A guy who you have in the lineup every day is going to appear to be more valuable than one you’ve just given up on and benched..or looks like you’re about to release.
At the very least, Francoeur will still give you good defense. Until he’s traded don’t expect to see him out of the lineup much.
olie – Gasoline is almost $3 a gallon down here – but I would have paid $20 for it if I could have found it after Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Never, ever again. (KeyLargo)
yeah it’s back close to that here in SW Fla too. We had the same deal when Charley came through, no gas, no power, no phones etc etc. I’m stocked up too. Since I’m retired this year though, I think there is more chance that I might flee the scene if one looks particularly bad.
Loved you comment about the tourists, very true over there. Here we mostly have snowbirds and most of them are gone by hurricane season anyway.

Nolie…I was born and raised in Toledo until I went in the military. Toledo was an ok place to grow up – the best parts were the zoo, HotDog Johns, Tony Packos, the Mud Hens (saw a lot of Yankees come up),the park system, and going up to Lake Erie.
I’ve lived in Spokane, Wa/Couer d”alene Id for over 30 years now and there’s no comparison. We have jobs, clean lakes, mountains, and great housing prices. Toledo has a Maumee river the color of coffee, and a feel like it’s the Allentown that Billy Joel sang about. The zoo’s still there but not much else is left…the best part now is the exit sign.
Evening, folks. Judy and I are slumming up here in Blue Ridge GA, watching our team, of course. I had a great time emailing my Yankee friends in NY and pointing out that the Braves have won more games in Fenway this year than have the Bronx Bombers.
kirkinga……………NO TEAM is going to trade for Jeff Francoeur. OK? Reason being, NO TEAM is going to want to risk Francoeur being awarded $6-7 mil in salary arbitration. Contrary to what many of you may believe, arbitrators factor in past seasons, not just the last season. The fact that Francoeur plays everyday and plays good defense in right will be SELLING POINTS that his agent will use if some team is foolish enough to tender him a contract and go to salary arbitration with Francoeur.
Basically, if a team were to trade for Francoeur, they would only be getting half a season out of him, because they will end up non-tendering him after the season. That is why Francoeur has ZERO trade value. Benching him will NOT reduce his trade value.
However, benching him will strengthen the Braves offense and give the Braves a better chance to win.
another author I forgot to mention the other day you might enjoy is Steve Berry. He writes historical / archaelogical thrillers. Every one of his 5-6 books has been excellen (LEW)
thanx buddy, I’ll look him up. I left a list of 6 or 8 authors for you that same day.
They might not be falling, but Frenchy has been seeing the ball better and hitting the ball really hard lately. That’s 2 great plays made on hard hit balls by him tonight…

Jennifer–

DOB et al. –

(STEVE OH)

[Cardinals mate for life]

abwright – nothing against you because you’re just repeating what a lot of people say, but I can’t really buy that its so important to open the doors to the Japanese market by signing one guy.

The zoo’s still there but not much else is left…the best part now is the exit sign.

kirkinga……………NO TEAM is going to trade for Jeff Francoeur.
