CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY COX USED SORIANO & GONZALEZ IN BACK TO BACK BLOW-OUT WINS???? DOB, SOMEBODY HAS TO BRING HIM TO TASK ON THIS, IT MIGHT AS WELL BE YOU.
DOB (June 20th, 2009 1:40 pm): “if it makes you feel better, yes, please switch that Matsuzaka isn’t being overpaid so much as the Red Sox grossly overpaid FOR him.”
Well, of course “it makes me feel better” – much better, in fact — to be able to believe that this blog is being written by someone with analytical capabilities a step or two above those of Jeff321 or MFin04 or the hundreds of other bleaters. Thanks.
“Not that it matters to most people (other than Dice-K and his family) [or anyone with half a brain] whether he’s getting the huge posting fee (he’s not) or it’s going to his old club (it is). What matters, and should matter, to people other than Dice-K is what the Red Sox paid for him. Way too much.”
Why? Why does that matter to YOU? Or to anyone other than the Red Sox (and their fans)?
“And Kawakami’s contract should be judged a year from now, not two months into his first season in the U.S.”
I believe I made that same point about Matsuzaka — you’ll be able to judge whether he earned his $8M salary this year only after his season is finished. Not now. (And I wasn’t trying to make any judgments about Kawakami, btw — just using his contract as a convenient reference point.)
“By the way, it’s $23 mill for three seasons for Kawakami, less than $8 mill per for accounting purposes.”
Split hairs if you wish — the fact remains that he will receive $9.667M THIS YEAR: a 2M signing bonus (paid between 2/09 and 5/09), and an ‘09 salary of $7.667M.
He gets $6.667M in each of ‘10 and ‘11.
But, of course, no one cares about that other than Kawakami and his family, right? (As well as any team that might want to trade for him, huh???)

Uh, have you watched the games where 10-3 leads and 6-2 leads have been routinely squandered by the middle relievers? Cox likely doesn’t want to find himself in another 15 innings affair in a game his team should have wrapped up when they were up 6-2 after six innings. It’s not the best practice to burn out these guys when you’ve got the game won, but they ain’t been winning alot, and Cox likely just wants to make sure that they actually win the darn games they’re winning, rather than take his chances with the middle relievers like he’s done at times this season. Worry about winning tomorrow’s win game tomorrow, but make sure you win today’s win today (especially when you’re having a hard enough time winning like they have been thus far)
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY COX USED SORIANO & GONZALEZ IN BACK TO BACK BLOW-OUT WINS?
…It’s called “managing.” Some managers like to get a psychological edge by showing the opponent’s that if the next game’s a tight one, you (the opponents) still don’t have a chance. Sometimes it depends on who needs work and who doesn’t. Most pitchers are going to pitch a little side session, anyway, so it really doesn’t matter if they do it in a game — especially against “live” pitching.
Some pitchers thrive on more work rather than less work. Many other reasons, too, but Bobby Cox knows what he’s doing. So, don’t worry about the reasons why, just sit back and emjoy last night’s win…and let’s hope for another tonight.
Braveheart, I understand the short-term rationale, but this kind of overuse is exactly what led to the implosion of Boyer in 2008 and (I would argue) the blowout of Moylan’s elbow after 2007. It’s called managing the bullpen, and it’s one of Bobby’s real shortcomings.
Maybe this has already been addressed, but can someone explain what I’m missing about the Glavine situation? What I heard was that he isn’t going to pitch this year, then maybe try again next season. do you by chance know where Dice-K fininshed last year in the Cy Young voting (before anyone laughs, remember he was 18-3)? I ask because top 3 ups his 09 salary…
Before pitching these two games in a row, Soriano last pitched June 12. Gonzo has pitched the 12th, 16th, 18th, and 19th. He’s seen more action recently than Raffy, but it’s not like he’s been pitching every day this past week. Sometimes I wonder about putting these guys in during blowouts, but if they haven’t pitched much recently, it’s not a terrible move. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush…
DWONDER , using Soriano and Gonzo in the finale of the Cinci series actually made sense. Gonzo had only worked once in the previous 3 days, and Soriano hadn’t been used at all in the 3 days before that game. So it was sensible to get them work and get them sharp for the Boston series.
That said, I will disagree with others here who have defended their use last night. I understand not wanting to take any chances, particularly at Fenway. But given the fact that both Soriano and Gonzo had worked the night before… with a 5/6-run lead, you have to at least TRY to avoid using them. Have them on the ready, and at the earliest sign of trouble, you call on them. But you have to try to avoid using them for a second consecutive night with a 5/6-run lead.
What if we’re up by 1 run in the 8th inning tonight? Will they be available again? And what if they do work tonight, and we’re up by 2 runs in the 8th tomorrow? If they weren’t used last night, they would both be available for BOTH of the next 2 games. But that certainly won’t be the case now.
And Joe Simpson brought up another good point last night… with a 6-run lead in the 9th last night, why let the Red Sox get a look at your closer? The hitters Gonzo faced last night either hadn’t seen him, or hadn’t seen him in a long time. So you have familiarized those hitters with you closer WITH A SIX RUN LEAD.
Soriano’s use was not wise, IMO. But Gonzo’s use with a 6-run lead was inexcusable.
During the 2006-2007 and 2008 seasons the Atlanta bullpen’s have posted the three highest inning totals in Braves history ( 512.1 – 539.1 – 554.1 ). Considering the fact that Leo Mazzone left after the 2005 season…….well, put two and two together. I’ll leave it up to each individual to figure out the rest.
DWONDER: “CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY COX USED SORIANO & GONZALEZ IN BACK TO BACK BLOW-OUT WINS?
cvbraves:…It’s called “managing.”
With respect, cvbraves, I think it’s called “mismanagement”.
Again, getting them work on Thursday made perfect sense. But Soriano and Gonzo may not be available tonight as a result of their use last night with a 5/6 run lead. Especially where Gonzo is concerned, it was the wrong move.
I’ve changed my tune on Soriano and Gonzo being used in these blowout games. Both men are free agents this offseason. Bobby ought to just drive them like he stole them. After all, Bobby may not be around after this season. What does he have to lose?
Well, of course “it makes me feel better” – much better, in fact — to be able to believe that this blog is being written by someone with analytical capabilities a step or two above those of Jeff321 or MFin04 or the hundreds of other bleaters. Thanks.
Lets see what we have here… Ahh!!! Random – Do you not recall me presenting “stats” about DOB getting punked in the clubhouse by Tim Hudson? I asked ya want you thought about that. But, you didn’t bother answering. Now, you want to bring my name up when I said nothing about this conversation?
Bryan: “And a 5 run lead in the 7th in Boston is no guarantee.”
No, it’s no guarantee. That’s why you have them on the ready and call on them at the first sign of trouble. But you’ve got to TRY to save them for the next 2 games of this series. And the lead in the 9th, when Gonzo was used, was SIX runs, not 5. Gonzo’s use was completely inexcusable. Again, you affect his availability for the next couple games, AND Bobby gave them a free look at our closer.
Coach, why don’t you grow a pair and tell us what you really think, instead of giving your usual “oh, I’m so smart, you figure it out” BS all the time?
Regarding bullpen use…it could be that BC would use the bullpen differently if he didn’t think these games were so crucial. The .500 record waterline can be pretty significant from a mental aspect. Seeing some momentum, he may be treating these games like playoff games until the team gets to .500, at which point, the goal of making a run to get back into contention seems more attainable. That said, I would like to have seen him save Gonzo or Soriano one in order to have a fresh closer tonight.
PWHjort (June 20th, 2009 2:04 pm): “What DOB said. What matters is what the Red Sox are paying for him, not what he’s making.”
Depends. What the Sox had to pay for the rights to sign him would matter NOT AT ALL to a team contemplating trading for him. No more than what his signing bonus was, or what he was paid in ‘07 or ‘08.
“The question should be: What resources of the club are consumed due to his presence?, not: how much of the club’s resources does he personally recieve?”
Again, it depends on the purpose and context of the discussion.
PS: Yes, Matsuzaka has a full no-trade clause — his consent would be required. And no, I don’t think the Sox will ever trade him. The discussion has taken on greater proportions than just this oone player’s contract — the point is still generally valid.
2006 – Smoltz, Hudson…not a bad start to your rotation…Chuck James, John Thomson, Horacio Ramirez, Kyle Davies, Jorge Sosa, Lance Cormier. Uh oh.
2007 – Smoltz, Hudson…not a bad start to your ro…Chuck James, Buddy Carlyle, Kyle Davies, Jo-Jo Reyes…sweet mother of…Lance Cormier…? Mark Redman…I want to die.
I’ve wanted Bobby out as manager for a while, but he had to use the bullpen too much the last three years. It was out of necessity. Would Leo have fixed all those problems?
Hell f***ing no.
I don’t know how good of a pitching coach Roger McDowell is, but the hem of his garment would have needed to have been divinely blessed to fix most of those problems.
WillBrave–I think so. We haven’t been winning much lately, so I think Bobby wants to nail these games down. And like I said, Soriano hadn’t pitched since the 12th before this two game stretch, so not a bad move. Gonzo has pitched more, so that’s a little less defensible, but whatever. We got a win. I’m happy.
Looks like the worse parts of the rain heading towards Boston will be North and South of the city with just a small band passing over the city. May not be too bad…have to keep an eye on it.
Mixxo- I don’t spend to much time in here to worry about what DOB has to say or think about me… I think this blog sucks… I don’t even know why I come in here…
Steve from Ohio- I agree, happy with any win…probably a sign of an unhealthy degree of fanaticism, but I usually find myself in a better mood the days after wins, even knowing with this team’s track record, it might not mean much. Hope springs eternal, I suppose.
Chop Chop, unquestionably, he’s trying to win. I don’t doubt BC’s character or desire to win the slightest. But his handling of the pitching staff not good. Not at all. We never really noticed it when we had Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Avery/Neagle/Milwood, and capable offenses… but now, it’s pretty friggin’ glaring.
As I’ve said before, there are 2 facets to being a big league manager: leadership and strategy. Bobby is as great a leader as we’ve ever had in this game. Players would run though a brick wall for that guy, there’s always continuity in the clubhouse, and we’ve even been able to attract or retain players in part because of their desire to play for BC. He’s one of the most loved figures in baseball for a reason.
But as a strategist, in my very humble opinion, he’s substandard.
Most of the people in here think they are coaches… but they are just FANS… some people in here just b1tch in here, i don’t think most people are happy with themselves…. but what do I know??lol
Mixxo- I don’t spend to much time in here to worry about what DOB has to say or think about me… I think this blog sucks… I don’t even know why I come in here…
I’ve wanted Bobby out as manager for a while, but he had to use the bullpen too much the last three years. It was out of necessity. Would Leo have fixed all those problems?
UM……Leo fixed the bullpen and starting pitching for fifteen years
Chop Chop, Coach was supposed to say that (you forgot Kevin Barry, Oscar V., Travis Smith and Anthony Lerew btw). Though I suspect that he won’t address the question and will instead choose to ridicule you.
I also suspect that he thinks either A) Cox needed Mazzone to tell him how to use the bullpen, or B) Mazzone would’ve taught those guys how to not be terrible. Although A) is both not true in this instance and wouldn’t likely affect the overall number of bullpen innings thrown by a significant amount, but rather which pitchers were used and B) has nothing to do with Cox.
KC is correct, Cox abused his bullpen last night and the proof is right in front of us.
Kawakami was on cruise control. Cox pulled him after just 83 pitches. Why? Only God knows.
But here is the real kicker. Our starting pitching has been outstanding and yet the bullpen is once again on pace for another 500 innings of work. Figure it out people because Leo Mazzone would never do such a thing.
Oops, I see that he already got to it at 3:13. And didn’t really make any point whatsoever at 3:19. And he wonders why we don’t hang on his every word?
Rain’s supposed to get here between 6 p.m. and gametime. But they’re still playing at U.S. Open, for what that’s worth (I say that because they thought it would rain harder earlier there).
So maybe if it’s only light rain, or later arriving, Lowe and Beckett can get a quick one in. So far, still nice here. Getting cloudy, but still nice out.
Lets see if I have this in order. Chop Chop is vainly trying to defend the idiocy of Bobby Cox, while Steve is attempting to do the same for Chop Chop.
The circle jerk is complete. I’ll let you gentlemen finish exciting each other.
By the way, it’s Wakefield tomorrow, not Dempster as originally listed. So in Beckett and Wakefield, Braves will be facing two guys who are unbeaten this season at Fenway, after facing a guy last night who’s lost every start here with an ERA in the mid-8’s at Fenway.
Random,
What was the point you were trying to make origionally? If it is that Matsuzaka is more of a bargain for a club than Kawakami, you’re not correct.
I guess this means double header in Atl. when Boston comes to town. Oh man, in the humidity of the south playing back-to-back…they’d definitely be earning their millions there.
The rain that has been at Bethpage Black for the US Open (which has been ALL DAY), is likely what we’ll see at Fenway. The heavy rain is north and south of that trajectory.
Random – Just like I thought, dude. You can’t comment on DOB getting punked in the clubhouse. I guess either admitting Tim Hudson needs anger management classes or Cox and his fairytale “respectable” clubhouse are a load of crap is too much for you to tackle.
I keep seeing bloggers rip Bobby for using Soriano and Gonzalez on back to back days. I have never thought of using a one inning pitcher two days in a row as over using him but I looked up one of the foremost closers in to seeMLB how he did.
I used KRod (Francisco Rodriquez) of the Mets, who was with the Angels last year, and had 76 appearances.
He had 29 appearances with no days rest.
He had 20 appearances with one day of rest.
He had 8 appearances with two days rest.
He had 9 appearances with 4,5, 6 days rest.
Overwhelmingly, his stats were the best when pitching on ZERO days rest.
His WHIP was lowest at 1.125 with ZERO days rest.
His OBP was lowest at .287 with ZERO days rest.
His OPS was lowest at .542 with ZERO days rest.
His BA against was lowest at .181 with ZERO days rest.
Shoots the He!! out of Bobby Cox not knowing what he was doing, AGAIN!
That interactive weather map thing isn’t worth two cents. It has been raining at my house and I have looked at the weather map and it doesn’t even show that it’s raining. Worthless.
Take a look at the last four years of my postings. How often do I defend Bobby Cox? It takes a mentally deficient mouthbreathing charlatan like you to get me to do it. Your BS is so rancid that I can’t avoid regurgitating some sort of a defense for the man. You are, without question, one of the most insipid posters this blog has ever seen. Will Luis Durango submit to your will? I don’t know. Unrequited love is a b!tch, but you’ll chase after affirmation like a rabid three-legged dog with an impotent pink thing.
My N.E. pals on a musician’s forum I frequent are busting my nads today. I dunno ….all I did was start a thread with the title…Dice K was awesome last night!
Oh I know. I can’t stand that thing. They spend so much time changing the format of it that they don’t spend any time actually improving the thing. A couple years ago it worked OK, but now…yeah, not worth 2 cents.
“Matsuzaka ended the season with an 18-3 record, 2.90 ERA and held opponents to a .211 AVG, the lowest in the majors. He also led the AL by leaving 80.6 percent of the baserunners he allowed stranded.[27] These numbers were enough to place him 4th in the American League Cy Young Award race.” (Wikipedia)
Coach ( 2010 or Bust), in fairness, the total number of bullpen innings this year is probably skewed because of all the rain delays and the poor work from the bottom of the rotation through the first month or two of the season.
But, there’s no question that BC uses key relievers in situations where he shouldn’t, and often leaves both starters and relievers in longer than he should (which is the opposite of what he did last night when he pulled KK aft 83 pitches, which as you correctly pointed out, made no sense at all unless something was wrong with him.
DOB influenced me to listen to some Steve Earle today. While listening to Guitar Town, I noticed a good line that could apply to the Braves in 2009. Since the Braves are paying the rotation about $37 million this year (Lowe $16, Vazquez $11, Kawakami $8, and the league minimums roughly $3 mil combined):
Everybody told me you cant get far, On thirty-seven dollars and a jap guitar
Random–Dice K’s FIP last year was .403. Doesn’t mean anything about his end result last year, but showed that he was probably pitching over his head and this year (and 2007) shows it. I don’t think he’s as awful as he’s been this year, but I don’t think he’s a sub-3.00 ERA pitcher, either.
I don’t know if it’s effective to use one of the best closers in the game as your example. But, those are impressive stats. Let me give you an example of a pitcher that Bobby worked to death last year. Blaine Boyer. Pre All Star game 51 games 3.93 ERA 1.23 WHIP .237 BAA. Post All Star game 25 games 11.17 ERA 1.71 WHIP .321 BAA.
We can throw examples at each other all day. My point would be that there are really only 3 guys in the Braves bullpen that Bobby trust. Moylan, Soriano, and Gonzo. All three have had a major surgery within the last 2 years and Soriano and Moylan within the last year. All three are near the top of the league in appearances. I hope I am completely wrong, but I see at least 2 of these guys being completely burned out by the last month of the season. Again, I hope I am wrong.
PWHjort (June 20th, 2009 3:27 pm): “What was the point you were trying to make origionally? If it is that Matsuzaka is more of a bargain for a club than Kawakami, you’re not correct.”
No “point”, actually — just a minor (and I thought, noncontroversial) clarification.
DOB stated that Matsuzaka was overpaid, which he is not (yet). It spiralled out of control from there.

Again, getting them work on Thursday made perfect sense. But Soriano and Gonzo may not be available tonight as a result of their use last night with a 5/6 run lead. Especially where Gonzo is concerned, it was the wrong move.

Kawakami was on cruise control. Cox pulled him after just 83 pitches. Why? Only God knows.
