This isn’t ESPN fantasy baseball. The trade you are proposing is unrealistic. First, the Braves CAN NOT take on any more additional payroll. Second…Indians will not trade Martinez (unless they can get one of our untouchables in the deal…like a Freddie Freeman or Jayson Heyward). Third…No rush to trade Martinez right now. They could wait and push for an AL CENTRAL title next year (with him on their team), if not they can trade him before the deadline and get a king’s ransom then. Fourth…DeRosa will command a king’s ransom all by himself by mid-july. Just wait. Some team is surely going to come calling and overpay with prospects.
So why would the Indians wanna do that deal right now?
Again, this isn’t FANTASY baseball.
Arguably the 2 biggest “wish list” players for teams looking to improve their lineups are DeRosa and Holliday. Neither one is going cheap and going before mid-july most likely. Too many teams are “still in it”.
This year Tim K. and Buster O. both said on ESPN that it’s a luke warm market for july acquisitions versus previous seasons due to the economy and the financial strain that many teams are under at the moment.
BTW….I hardly ever agree with Kincade on 680thefan, but he summed up the whole Smoltz ordeal pretty well: JUST SHUT UP ABOUT THE BRAVES. You are a Red Sox now. No more comments about the Braves. John also called out Chipper Jones’ sorrority sister act…with “I can’t face John Smoltz, it’s too tough”. It’s 1 game out of 162, You are a pro, you get paid to go out there and do your job. Act like it.
Smoltz is still a cowardly LION for ditching the chance to pitch against the Braves.
Anyone notice Joe Simpson’s comments during the game? He was talking about playing the hot hitters and how it’s always been his opinion that you go with the hot hand, no matter if it’s a lefty or a righty and he was speaking specifically about Diaz and Prado especially.
Prado has been raking and if his groin is healthy enough, I would simply sit Johnson down along with GA and let him and Diaz play until they can’t hit. We know KJ can’t hit consistently for any length of time. I don’t want to keep going through the 8-54 stretches just to get a 10-22 once in a while. This team needs consistency and KJ’s travails only exacerbate inconsistencies of an already inconsistent team.
i have decided that we should keep frenchy! yup i said that just had to check. the other day someone argued that he is our only realy athlete if that be the case then lets keep him and see what he can do. this team aint going anywhere this year anyways so no harm done by keepin him, infact the only it coud do is possibly increase his trade value
I finished watching my recording of the game while keeping up with the blog as it was happening in real time. I was very pleased to see that a 7-0 lead did not diminish our ability to deride the irrational decision to keep our back-enders of the bullpen in game-shape while spurning the opportunity to overwork Medlen/Bennett, or bring in Manny “where did the lead go” Acosta.
No…I was just getting a little frustrated. That 0-9 with runners and 1st and 2nd is starting to get to me…and his swing seems to be off just a little bit or something.
And I still can’t figure out why his power numbers seem to be down. Maybe Fenway will be a good place to launch some uh…doubles. He usually such a doubles machine, but here it is the middle of June, and he’s only got 10. Last year he hit 12 in May alone. I think he spoiled me with those 42 doubles last season…
McLouth of the South……….Victor Martinez is an INCREDIBLE bargain at $7 mil next year. The Indians would have no problem with picking it up.
Also, your assertion that Kotchman will command half that in salary arbitration next year is wishful thinking. He’ll more than likely get between $5-6 mil. He is making $2.85 mil this year. His salary doubled from $1.45 mil in 2008. Almost doubled this year to $2.85. He’ll almost double his salary in 2010 through salary arbitration. That’s the way it works, MORON.
MORONS like you do a very bad job of researching. Why dont you do a search and see what other players in their 2nd year of salary arbitration earn in relation to their first year of salary arbitration? That is why I feel that if the Braves still have Jeff Francoeur at the end of the year, they will have no choice but to non-tender him, unless they want to risk having to pay a singles hitter who hits .250 $6-7mil in 2010.
If, and we’re talking a HUGE “if” here, the Braves tender Jeff Francoeur a contract next year, it will be for 2.7 million dollars. Exactly 80% of his current salary. Exactly the minimum a player can make in arbitration under the guidelines of the collective bargaining agreement (80% of last year’s salary).
PWHjort………….you are correct, the Braves can “non-tender” Jeff Francoeur for 80% of his salary this year. However, if you think that a salary arbitrator would side with the Braves at that figure, then you are smoking some bad sh_t. Considering the fact that Bobby will continue throwing Francoeur out there every day, Francoeur’s agent will point out that Francoeur plays every day, plays great defense, and will probably end up with 70 or so RBIs this year (he’ll end up with approximately 600 at bats this year because Bobby rarely rest him). Francoeur will easily ask for $6-7 mil in salary arbitration. All his agent will have to do is compare Francoeur’s stats (contrary to popular belief, a salary arbitrator takes into account a player’s previous seasons, not just the last season, when factoring in whether to take the player’s or team’s proposal).
So when you look at it that way, it is well within reason to stipulate that Francoeur will earn between $6-7 mil next year if the Braves were foolish enough to tender him.
McLouth of the South……….get back with me after salary arbitration next year when Kotchman gets his $5-6 mil. There is NO WAY that he will be awarded less than $4 mil. Morons like you have no understanding as to how salary arbitration really works.

I kinda doubt that, it would be almost a guarantee that Francy would get whatever he asked for from the arbitor.Very unlikely they would offer less than he is already making, they would be better off non-tendering him.

Sure hope the girl in the stands that got conked by Chipper’s cleats got a little autographed something after the game. Of course, it probably hurt Glassfeet more than it hurt her!!
I sure would love to see the same lineup tomorrow, give the guys a chance to repeat the good offense from today’s game.
cabravesfan – keeping busy (and or turning in early since I’ve been so busy). Today I was able to watch the game until the Diaz homerun, then caught the rest when I returned. My new student yesterday took over four hours of my time (she kept apologizing that I must be getting bored, but I assured her that her academic credentials were keeping my interest at a high level). Right now I only have one scheduled hour during the next 65 hours, so I should be here with some regularity.
CR, Have a safe trip back to the ATL. Thanks for all of your hard work on this road trip. I guess the baton gets handed back to DOB in beantown. Maybe that will bring us some good luck!
t’s very unlikely that they’ll tender him a contract in the first place. Unless they’re morons PWHjort
that could happen if he doesn’t pick it up the rest of the year, but if they do make an offer it won’t be so low that he would automatically win.
Maybe he will get traded for a prospect, or maybe he will continue to hit a little better like he has lately. If he doesn’t then a non-tender could actually happen even with the attendant bad feelings and sense of failure that it would engender.
My new student yesterday took over four hours of my time (she kept apologizing that I must be getting bored, but I assured her that her academic credentials were keeping my interest at a high level). (Vinings Jim)
do you actually ever tutor guys Jim, or are they all sweet young things?

PETA: I guess you guys were horrified over the “Obama/Fly” incident. Just about when you all had finally recovered from the “Randy Johnson Splatters Bird All Over Home Plate” incident, huh?
Bobby Cox isn’t the only one who has been rubbed the wrong way by Braves shortstop Yunel Escobar’s attention to style over detail lately. “Somebody better remind him he’s Yunel Escobar, not Gloria Estefan,” said one scout. “There ain’t no show going on. This is baseball. Let’s play.” (JAYSON STARK)
Ah, shaddup. If I was Yunel Escobar, I wouldn’t be insulted by being accused of putting on too much of a show. I would be insulted of being accused of only putting on a show the caliber of Gloria Estafan. I’d be like, damn, I was aiming to put on a show the likes of James Brown, Rick James, Prince, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen. The hell with sportsmanship, gots to take my showmanship to a level higher than Gloria Estafan. Of course, however, if you’re gonna have the guts to show your arse so much, it helps not to have your head up it so much.
nolie – there are guys, but they’re not as interesting to talk about (and definitely not as … able – btw, I only refer to those over 20 in terms of their fine academics). And Tom’s most recent comment on the blog was to compare me to Phyllis Diller – if that’s the best he’s got, I think I can handle him.
I know for a fact that Tom doesn’t have Jim’s e-mail…unless something went on behind my back?? And don’t listen to Jim about the guys he allegedly tutors…
I’m sure the win was encouraging for Hanson and the Braves BUT PLEASE don’t get your hopes up. We’ve all seen this movie before. The Braves will win 2, lose 3, win 3, lose 4, win 1 , etc…. The main issue with the Braves is they simply lack power hitting. Chipper is more a hitter for avergae than power, the same with McCann. The Braves do not have a Ryan Howard, Albert Pujols, or even just a second tier power hitter. Think about this, your best two hitters consistently miss time and your right fielder has a lower OBP than Chipper’s batting average.
FRANK WREN BLATENTLY UNDERESTIMATED THE INEPTITUDE OF THE BRAVES OFFENSE. HE WAS HOPING FOR THE BEST. IN ORDER FOR SUCCESS, THE BRAVES NEEDED EVERYONE HEALTHY AND PERFORMING AT OR ABOVE THEIR TALENT LEVEL WHICH ISN’T GOING TO HAPPEN. THEIR BEST BET IS TO TRADE CHIPPER, TRY-OUT MCCAN AT 1ST, DUMP THE WHOLE MANAGERIAL STAFF, AND START OVER.
THE BRAVES SHOULD HAVE WENT AFTER PAT BURELL, RAUL IBANEZ OR ADAM DUNNE.
That’s not my point. I’m just pointing out the WORST team in baseball is beating a team with a 100 million + payroll….in fact the Yankees are a team that should beat the Nats/Marlins and Us…it’s just a fact if we step up/
You know it – some sexy lady salamanders out there waiting for their cloaca’s to be settled with babies. A woman is incomplete until she has offspring according to the sky daddy.
I dont think that lineup really improves our all that much. Not to mention we’re giving up 3+ years of Esco and Kotch for 1/2 of DeRose and 1 1/2 of VMart. Not to mention, why in the world would the Indians want James Parr? He’s no better than a decent 5th starter…and thats in the NL. I cant imagine that high fastball in the AL.
No way that deal is made. It hurts the Braves way to much.
outside of Locke, i still think we raped the Pirates in that deal. Gorkys might be a good leadoff guy some day, but he has NO power and a CF has to have a lil pop unless he hits .320 every year (which GH wont do)
Flying high with the PELICANS. If you remember at last report both HEYWARD and FREEMAN were in a dead-heat batting average-wise at .295 each.
HEYWARD making his way back slowly. 0-3 tonight with 1 BB and 1 run scored. .289 overall for the year.
FREEMAN picking it up. 3-4 tonight with a double and a SO. Two runs scored and his average now a healthy .310 overall.
CODY JOHNSON was having a rough June at last report, but had a notable game tonight – 0 SO. That’s close to a first. Good night at the plate all ’round. 1-2 with 1 RBI on a sac fly. His average has rebounded a bit to .268 overall. Maybe he’s becoming comfortable with some batting adjustments and they’re starting to bear some good fruit. We’ll see.
FOXSports.com: Can that be fixed in the middle of the season?
Jones: Yeah, anything can be fixed if players want to fix it. That’s what we all still hold out hope for, that baseball becomes the No. 1 priority for these guys and they care about going out and executing day in and day out, doing the little things it takes to win a big-league ballgame.
FOXSports.com: Do you think that’s not as much of a priority here as it used to be?
Jones: No, it’s a priority. As long as it’s a priority for the manager, it should be a priority for the rest of us. I don’t know that it is. It still is for me. But I can’t speak for the other guys.
FOXSports.com: Why is that? Are guys not as focused?
Jones: I don’t know. You’d have to ask each individual. There’s just a different feel.
FOXSports.com: As a leader, have you called meetings or pulled guys aside?
Jones: I’m of the belief that … one good thing Ozzie Guillen said is, “Meetings are for teams that stink.” If you’re really good, you don’t have meetings. We’ve had our share of meetings. I refuse to call any more because I’ve already said my piece. I would just be reiterating what I’ve already said. Obviously, things that I’ve said in the past, while they may have worked for a little while, didn’t last.
There’s only so much you can do. There’s only so much you can say. At some point, the players out there have to perform. They have to execute. They have to, bottom line, get better. If they’re just satisfied with picking up a paycheck every couple weeks, there’s nothing you can do about that.
FOXSports.com: How many meetings have you called personally this year?
Jones: One. But other people have called meetings, and it comes down to you saying the same thing over and over. I’m not going to do that. I’m not going to call a meeting, look around the room and have guys rolling their eyes at me.
K Rod gives up the winning run. Orioles win! Mets choke again!
Ahahaha are you serious? The NL East is there for the taking, folks..and it will be until late September. Nobody is going to run away with this division.
RHR, probably should post the last two questions and answers from that interview, since Chipper ends it with an answer that seems to, I don’t know, sort of take some sting out of the previous tough answers. (If people click on the link you provided, they can get the whole interview, including the questions before and after the ones you pasted above.)
But yes, you’re right. Some pretty candid stuff. Thanks for linking it.
Here’s the last two I was talking about:
FOXSports.com: Has the message been about being focused and making winning the top priority?
Jones: The key to winning for us is simple. It’s the same formula it’s always been. It’s pitching, defense and timely hitting. We’ve had pitching. Our defense has been just north of horrible all year, and our hitting hasn’t been much better. We’re missing two out of the three components.
FOXSports.com: Are guys taking the pregame preparations seriously enough?
Jones: Yeah, guys are preparing. They watch film. They hit in the cage. They’re trying. They’re working hard. If they weren’t working hard, that would be when somebody would have to say something. The preparation is there. The work ethic is there. It’s just not happening out on the field. It’s not translating
Hey hey hey cabraves, what you got going on in here tonight? Sounds interesting
I am excited about the Far East Showdown in Fenway tomorrow night. I imagine KK will have every bit as much swagger as he did vs Halladay. It better not rain.
sources say Adam Laroche wants to be traded, he wants to follow McLouth. He’s got more power than Kotchman. What you think?? Chipper wouldn’t mind. I love his talent and ADD.
Bravos2249, I haven’t been around team last few days to ask, but I don’t know why they would alter the pitching plans — i.e. bring up another arm, let Medlen start, etc — for the Cubs makeup. It’s just a single game being played on what was an off day, so this isn’t like a makeup game as part of a doubleheader. Instead of pushing back the starters a day or skipping someone’s turn for the off day, Cox can simply keep the rotation in order. Just another game on the schedule, in other words.
The story on the main sports page about Andruw Jones’ “resurrected” career is a little funny considering that his batting average and OPS have been plunging lately. Batting .246 going into tonight. He is a decent 4th outfielder and pinch hitter now. Nothing more.

Right now I only have one scheduled hour during the next 65 hours, so I should be here with some regularity.

that could happen if he doesn’t pick it up the rest of the year, but if they do make an offer it won’t be so low that he would automatically win.
Maybe he will get traded for a prospect, or maybe he will continue to hit a little better like he has lately. If he doesn’t then a non-tender could actually happen even with the attendant bad feelings and sense of failure that it would engender.

LET ME GM THE BRAVES!

GORKYS HERNANDEZ has yet to find his equilibrium in AA ALTOONA for the PIRATES. 12 games, 43 AB, .163 average, .403 OPS. Slow so far.
JEFFREY LOCKE in two starts, 8.0 IP, 10 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 9 SO, 4.50 ERA. About the same as when at MYRTLE.

McLouth of the South:
I dont think that lineup really improves our all that much. Not to mention we’re giving up 3+ years of Esco and Kotch for 1/2 of DeRose and 1 1/2 of VMart. Not to mention, why in the world would the Indians want James Parr? He’s no better than a decent 5th starter…and thats in the NL. I cant imagine that high fastball in the AL.
No way that deal is made. It hurts the Braves way to much.

DOWN ON THE FARM:
We’ll see.

Check out this Q & A with Chipper posted today..WOW goes right along with what we’ve been discussing here for the last several days..
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9700054/Q-and-A-with-Braves-slugger-Chipper-Jones
