Let’s take offense. FREDDIE FREEMAN has pulled into a tie with JASON HEYWARD for the batting lead on the PELICANS. Each is batting .295. Freeman on 139 AB’s and FREEMAN on 200 in 18 more games. Heyward still has a higher OPS at .935 to FREDDIE’s .806 and his 9 HR’s bests the 1B by 5. Their OBP is almost identical, but the slugging average is very different. .425 for FREEMAN, its .561 for HEYWARD. Both doing well when HEYWARD’s not side-lined.
Let’s take defense:
RF JASON HEYWARD – 37 games, 2 E.
1B FREDERICK FREEMAN – 55 games, 6 E.
A-n-n-n-d-d-d, CODY JOHNSON continues his “MIGHTY CASEY” routine with 82 SO’s in 202 AB’s. Average plummeting as well. Down to .257 with a dismal .143 in 28 June AB’s, and only 1 HR. His ratio of BB (10) to SO’s (11) for the month is improved however, for what it is worth.
I dozed off in the dugout the other night. When I woke up, I thought I was sitting on my front porch. The next thing was I started yelling at Nate McLouth “Hey kid, get off of my lawn!”
They don’t make baseball players like they used to. Take that Chipper Jones guy for instance. Mister aches and pains. Oh my toe hurts. Oh my back hurts. Maybe he should be spokesperson for Advil.
Anyone know when Omar will be back? Since we can’t trade KJ (almost no value right now), I can’t wait for Omar to come back and start at 2nd…won’t happen…but a guy can dream.
KK prediction….his salary will be a “bargain” by the time his contract is up…..I see him becoming a solid 3 starter who gets you 6-7 innings every time out before he is through….Dude battles and gives it all he has…I’d take his 7 mill over AJ and his 17 mill any day
When I finally retire, I think I’ll try sculpting clay. I can just feel my fingers picking at that moist squishy gunk and molding it into something beautiful.
I think commissioner Bowie Kuhn should crack down on sportswriters drinking in the pressbox. They just sit there in their cheap suits, with their hats on and ties loosened guzzling cheap booze the whole game. No wonder they write like crap.

Not sure how many of you have read the story on the Braves official site about Schafer, but it’s worth your time.
The following quotes, pretty much sum up WHY he will be a bigger success than Jeff ever would, and even if he doesn’t, why I will be rooting for him to be. He actually gets it.
“I’m surprised it didn’t happen earlier,[being sent down]” Schafer said. “In the big leagues, it’s all about winning. You don’t have time to mess around and work through stuff. You’ve got to win games there. It’s not like in the Minors. I completely understand. You’ve got to win and offensively, I wasn’t helping them win at all.”
“I’m not upset,” Schafer said. “I’m not mad. I understand 100 percent why I’m here. I think once I get playing again and once I get comfortable, I think I can go back up and help the team win this year.”
If only Jeff would have showed a half of a percent of that much humility and concern, he would have straightened himself out by now. But Jeff doesn’t think he’s doing anything wrong, and that the Braves were not only wrong, but being rude to send him down.
Japanese ballplayers? Never will happen. They’re all too short to play in the major leagues. And besides, all they want to do is sacrifice bunt. They don’t values at-bats the way we Westerners do.

Playoff Odds Update
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [June 15 at 4:12pm CST]
The season’s now two and a half months old, so it’s a good time to check the current Playoff Odds report at Baseball Prospectus. When Tim analyzed these odds a couple weeks ago, there were eleven teams with less than a 10% chance of making the playoffs. Now, there are ten such teams, but since the Pirates are sitting right on 10%, essentially the same number of teams seems to be out of the race.
The teams themselves are different, though. The Rockies have boosted their playoff chaces from under 5% to 21%. The Giants and Marlins didn’t do as well as the streaking Rockies, but they both boosted their chances considerably. Here’s the list of teams with less than a 10% chance of making the playoffs, according to BP.
These odds can change in a hurry, as the Rockies proved, but it takes a lot. This doesn’t mean these teams will all become sellers, but it would be surprising to see any of these teams, even the Braves or Mariners, make the playoffs. Contenders will probably find that adding Nick Johnson or Aubrey Huff is simpler than dealing for players like Brad Hawpe, whose teams are back in the race.
Aside from fielding percentage Mac beats Y. Molina in all other categories. Caught stealing has to do with other players actually catching the ball and tagging a runner, so I don’t really like it.
I dont think Schafer is going to be called up again…………unless……………braves deal GA and JF for a RF.
I do think that if he comes back, braves should play him in CF and McLouth in LF. OR if we get to trade JF and GA for a good RF, we put McLouth at LF and Schafer in CF. That is a good way out. OR, let McLouth stay in CF and Schafer platoon in LF with Diaz…………that would be the best way in my opinion.
I saw that article on Schafer. I have to say, his attitude really impressed me. I’m glad he took the demotion well and am looking forward to seeing him turn it around and hopefully return to the team this season. He’s humbled quite a bit since last year – wasn’t a big fan then.
“Because Johnson is a second baseman and Francoeur is a right fielder, some of you have also said you can’t compare apples to oranges. But let’s not forget that the Braves essentially made Johnson a second baseman to simply find a spot to have his bat in the lineup on a regular basis.”
Schafer has been through a lot for a 22 yr. old kid. He’s gonna be a sharp person in a few years because of all the mess he’s been through. Baseball is very tough but he has the tools and apparantly the patience to learn. Sometimes you forget how young these guys are and we want instant production from everybody, but Justice/Gant and many other young Braves prospects took their lumps and they turned out to be pretty dang good.
Tonight’s respite from the agony of losing kinda feels good to me. Sure would be nice to reel-off four or five in a row, get the positive juices flowing again.
Bravosnum, yeah, a lot of these posters come up with some stupid crap but I have to say some do some funny stuff…”Loaf Garret on a blackberry”, “Chip Carey’s eyebrows” to name a few.
Bravos2249Caught stealing has to do with other players actually catching the ball and tagging a runner, so I don’t really like it.
Me neither. Why don’t they have that category for SS/2B baseman? Should have a line for “dropped balls thrown by the catcher”…OK, that’s taking it a bit too far…
I’m having a hard time bashing Frenchy. If he were a dead horse, there’d be nothing left but a greasy spot and thrash marks. Time (for me) to just feel for the guy now, it’s as beyond his control at this point, as it is ours… His head is messed-up, no doubt about it. He needs help in a big way, and a change of scenery should be the first therapeutic order of business.
I also think he is really intelligent, and the good part is he clearly understands whats happening, its a matter of time with that guy……….. completely the other way around with JF………..he still thinks he is superhuman. And KJ thinks he is not that bad.
Play infante at 2b when he comes back………….Play KJ in LF and use Schafer as the back up with diaz. Send GA packing.
Sometimes, when I’m not sure whether or not to make a pitching change, I’ll call home and ask my dog Sassafras for a second opinion. One bark = make a change. Two barks = no change. Sassafras was my top choice to replace Leo Mazzone, but the higher ups thought that hire would be a bad idea. What the heck do they know anyhow?
tnbrian, if you like funny, you should have been here a year and more ago and read journalist jimmy smith’s stuff. The dude was borderline brilliant. No, he was brilliant. Alas, he was chased off for some reason. Now the blog is underwhelmed by the pedestrian and pedantic.
I voted for Chipper and Mac ONLY. They’re the only deserving non-pitchers on our team; screw guys on other teams, I’m sure as Hell not voting for them.
Whispers around baseball indicate that the Braves could be on the verge of trading young phenom southpaw Steve Avery to the Detroit Tigers for slugging first baseman Cecil Fielder. Sources say talks have heated up to the point where a deal seems imminent.
Well, that’s all for this week’s edition of “Diamond Notes.” I’m Peter Gammons.

* Royals – 9.2%
* Braves – 8.8%
* White Sox – 5.4%
* Astros – 4.8%
* A’s – 2.9%
* Diamondbacks – 2.0%
* Padres – 1.5%
* Orioles – 0.3%
* Nationals – 0.0%

N8 –
I saw that article on Schafer. I have to say, his attitude really impressed me. I’m glad he took the demotion well and am looking forward to seeing him turn it around and hopefully return to the team this season. He’s humbled quite a bit since last year – wasn’t a big fan then.

“Because Johnson is a second baseman and Francoeur is a right fielder, some of you have also said you can’t compare apples to oranges. But let’s not forget that the Braves essentially made Johnson a second baseman to simply find a spot to have his bat in the lineup on a regular basis.”

I don’t think McCann leads in the category of blocking out the plate and taking a possible hit as opposed to hiding behind the umpire.

Me neither. Why don’t they have that category for SS/2B baseman? Should have a line for “dropped balls thrown by the catcher”…OK, that’s taking it a bit too far…

Some people have a hard time giving themselves an enema. It’s probably psychological.
That’s why it’s always good to have the number of a good enema technologist.

Kinda miss ol’ Hammy.
Had a ball bashing him on off-nights.

Soph,
I also think he is really intelligent, and the good part is he clearly understands whats happening, its a matter of time with that guy……….. completely the other way around with JF………..he still thinks he is superhuman. And KJ thinks he is not that bad.
Play infante at 2b when he comes back………….Play KJ in LF and use Schafer as the back up with diaz. Send GA packing.

How come no Brave has such a show.
Wouldn’t it be fun to see “Yunel’s World”, for example. Of course McCann would probably vote for “Mac’s World”.

TRADE WINDS STIRRING
Whispers around baseball indicate that the Braves could be on the verge of trading young phenom southpaw Steve Avery to the Detroit Tigers for slugging first baseman Cecil Fielder. Sources say talks have heated up to the point where a deal seems imminent.
Well, that’s all for this week’s edition of “Diamond Notes.” I’m Peter Gammons.
