Hot rumor is the Braves are talking to Rockies about Hawpe. Rumored deal involves Francoeur, Rohrbough and Parr for Hawpe and minor league shortstop Hector Gomez.
GRIEF! Bobby ain’t so bad when you consider what most other managers like say, Pinella,Manuel and many others would’ve done to Escobar by now. Yunel is a special talent but some of the attitude is tiring, although I wish 90% of the team had his fire most of the time, but if he’s getting under Bobby’s skin, pretty certain he’d get on most, if not all other managers skin. Something will be cooking here soon and I believe the Braves are gonna make a big splash again.
Got McLouth but I feel more is coming. If this is indeed Bobby’s final year, I’ll bet they make a major push for October baseball. Holliday is a rental so highly unlikely but possibly Carlos Lee or a slugger of his caliber. I’ve met Francoeur a few times at the park and he’s one heck of a guy. Nice and respectful to the fans. Someone asked him last homestand about his struggles and he turned red in the face and I felt really bad for him. The fan was kinda rude. I do feel he needs to go somewhere else for himself first and of course the team. Good night bloggers!
WOAH, The Honest Mechanic, where are you hearing that about Hawpe? Was gonna sign off but I read that. You could be telling a white lie but I’ll ask anyways.
I was in the Fort Collins, CO the past few days. One of their TV sports guys mentioned it during last night’s newcast. He also added that he expected the Hawpe trade rumors to really pick up over the next couple of weeks. Not only Hawpe but talk regarding Huston Street and Garrett Atkins as well.
Jay, Kendrick isn’t an impact type player I feel we need to make a run. Kendrick is a young and solid player but not much, if any better than a Infante/Prado combo out at second. Kelly has been a real bummer, huh? Thought the guy was on track but he’s fallen off it quit a bit after last year.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m as frustrated as anyone with Francoeur’s performance. Problem is we have nobody at AAA or AA who is likely to do better. Brandon Jones is really the only option, but his power has gone AWOL. He’s batting .307 but he has 0 HR, 19 RBI and a pathetic .364 SLG. He has really no SB ability to speak of so those #s are absolutely unacceptable. He might prove to be an upgrade offensively, but even if that’s the case, it’d only be the very slightest of upgrades. Jones would be a downgrade defensively. Might as well stick with Francoeur if that’s the best we can do.
He’s not their starter…he’s in the minors….doesn’t have a high avg….about the same amount of rbi and homers in less ab than Kelly…and he’s right handed
Even with this year’s .231 batting average factored in, Kendrick has a career .294 average. Kelly has a .269 career average. One could make the argument that we’ve seen Kelly’s best at this point whereas most would say that Kendrick has only scratched the surface. Angels wouldn’t make the trade, but I probably would if I were the Braves.
But that would be the change that both guys really need and Kendrick is also from Jacksonville so it’d be kind of a homecoming. Most importantly we’d improve our defense at 2B.
The Angels have several options that can play several IF positions(Izturiz(sp), Rodriguez, Woods, Figgins, Sandoval, etc.) so they maybe would part with him at this point if they went as far as to send him back to the minors.
Hey COACH — I was walking down a hall the other day and I passed Bobby Cox. I asked him if he ever read any of the bs negative comments on this blog by a guy called COACH?
I know what you’re getting at, but I’m not so sure Kendrick needs a change of scenery. He’s been hampered in the past by injuries more than anything else. For whatever reason he has been ice cold since April this year, but I don’t think for a second that the Angels have given up on him. They basically just told him to go down there, iron out the kinks, and he’d be back once that happens. It’s just a short-term trip to AAA for Kendrick. If I’m the Braves, I’d definitely ask them about a 2B swap, but I doubt they’d be interested unless we added more into the trade.
Hold on. Of course I would make that trade. A fool wouldn’t. ANd guess what? They aren’t fools in LA.
Trade a guy who is younger, faster, better defensivly, and has more upside for a guy that is streaky as hell, doest have a great glove and probably has peaked?
That makes absolutley zero sense. If they really wanted to give him “a change of scenery” why trade him for a underachiever???? Dont you think they could get someone a little better than Kelly?
I’m gonna break down Francoeur’s comments about his reaction to the trade talk…
If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen,” Francoeur said of a trade. “I can’t control that. I don’t have a long-term deal.
You don’t have a long term deal because you rejected the one the Braves offered you before the beginning of last season, because you thought you were worth more.
Even if I’m here next year, that stuff will keep popping up because of it. That’s just part of the game. It’s a business.
Yes, you said that last year when you cried and b!tched about being sent to the minors. We get it, baseball is a business…
They have to mix and match what they want to do financially. I’m not sure if I’m in those plans or not.
Well Jeff…you were in those plans before you rejected your long term offer then saw your BA, HR, RBI, SLG, OBP, and every other offensive category hit the bottom of all major league outfielders. If the Braves mix and match what they have to do financially then you won’t be here. You should be damn lucky you still have a job because a minor league player would put up better or even numbers, and that would be a great mix and match for the Braves financially because they’d be paying a minor league salary. Don’t you get it? You’re not an asset to the team, and the Braves should be sending your ass down again like the Angels did to Kendrick. You should be kissing their ass, not vice versa.
I’m just going to keep playing and keep doing what I do
Ok, keep OPSing around 600 with your awful .280 OBP. Keep swinging at 1st pitches and do what you do, and see how much longer you still have a job for ANY team Jeff.
Kendrick isnt’ that great in the field. The Angels have never been too happy with his defense. His defense has gotten a little better over the years. I’d say he’s better than Kelly in that he has more range. He’s made some costly errors the past couple of years like Kelly has, but a little less frequently.
I would love a Kendrick for Kelly trade. Kendrick is line drive type hitter. He works counts. My type of guy. I don’t know why he’s struggled so much this year, but he’s a prototypical .300 hitter 35 double, 15 HR guy.
I don’t think the Angels would make that trade, and I don’t think we need Howie with Martin and Infante either. Both are Kendrick type hitters, maybe not as good as Kendrick’s “potential”, but we’ve been saying that those two “backups” aren’t as good as Kelly’s “potential” either. Might as well trade Kelly for a bullpen arm, or preferably a right fielder, and let Infante and Martin handle 2nd with the other backing up with Diory, who will be the next Prado (though not as good with the glove).
I really don’t understand the frustration with Escobar. He’s a young player, and good one at that. The mental error against Pittsburgh really hurt last week, but the 2 today seemed pretty marginal. I think it was just adding up on Yunel, more because of his base running blunders and what he did last week. But for being pulled today after some marginal decisions kinda leave a bad taste in my mouth. Pull the kid after the next base running mistake, not for what happened today. The trade talks about Yunel also leave a bad taste in my mouth. That would be one of the stupidest decision this franchise would ever had made…

yeah right, If you owned them then just who was the boss you were talking about in the previous post? Too damn stupid to keep a lie straight for 2 posts in a row. No wonder your posts are so asinine.
I ran into Bobby Cox and Frank Wren at Krystal last week and asked them if they had ever read any of the blog comments from Capt. Caveman.
Wren said, “No comment.”
Cox said, “Shut up and let me eat this sackful before it gets cold.”
And I said, “Just so you know, I peed in your Mountain Dew. So there.” Then I headed back to the drive through window before my boss caught me.

Must say, i’m disgusted with the Braves performance. Another dismal, pathetic game that we played. Why is it when we play a bad team or a team that is way below .500, the Braves play to their level? The past 2 games we looked like a special ed team out there. 1 hit after 3 innings in both games. We made their pitchers look like cy young out there.
Breaking News: According to Yayhoo! Sports, Bobby Cox has been called into a meeting about his future with Frank Wren.
Sources say, that Wren was reading the Atlanta Journal-Constitution beat blog and came to the conclusion that the manager Bobby Cox should be fired after reading commentary which has since been linked to a Mr. Huck Aldous of Alabama.
Mr. Aldous has been contacted and his response was, “Dang, me and Neil (his postman) was just sittin’ around havin a coupla beers and for[sic] ya know weuz gettin kinda mad and I wrote that stuff. I didn’t think anybody knowed[sic] who I was.”
Long time friend, Mack Luhan said, ” Huh? Yeah, Huck knows a bunch about baseball. I think he’s got ever baseball card since we uz in the fifth grade.”
When Mr. Luhan was told about the potential impact of Mr. Aldous’ words, he responded, “Huh?, Dang.”

Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your game notes @ 10:06 last night. Very good stuff! Glad you had a good time at the game! (Wish the outcome had been better for ya.)
I think our only option at this point is to get rid of some dead wood. It’s going to be painful. But here’s what we can offer: Escobar, Vazquez (I will miss him. He’s a great pitcher on a really bad team), and Francoeur for a proven HR hitter (somebody with at least 10 HRs and a .270-plus average) and a youngish shortstop with good defense, some speed, and at least .250 BA. Frenchy is never going to reach his potential because he peaked too soon and can’t comprehend why he can’t hit better. He doesn’t understand that pitchers make adjustments and find your weaknesses. Vazquez will never win another if he keeps pitching for a team with absolutely no offense. Escobar is a decent fielder (good arm) and decent hitter, but he’s mentally retarded. He should be playing Special Olympics baseball. I don’t think he even plans what to do before the ball is hit to him. I think he just reacts. Every Little Leaguer knows that you have to have a plan. At bat, Escobar never considers the game situation. The pitcher could have walked the last three guys when the Braves are down by five in the ninth, and he will swing at the first pitch. Boom. Double Play. Reminds me of Andruw but with gap power.
So you’re smart enough to own and operate three small businessess (no small accomplishment) but you still think that Francoeur, Campillo, Norton and C. Johnson for Jones and Roberts is a good deal? Stick to crystal, bro.
I love how some of y’all are one day saying Bobby doesn’t hold his players accountable, and now are saying that he’s throwing Yunel under the bus. Or, better yet, you’re complaining about how he’s not benching Kelly for bad play, but he actually did do that a while ago, but didn’t say so to the media because he obviously didn’t think it was necessary. Is that just too rich or what?
I have it on good authority from a Braves official that the Braves are going to trade Lowe, JJ, Javy, KK, and Hanson to the Yankees for Tex, Damon, Jeter, Cano, Swisher, and Matsui. Now this trade will potential have a negative effect on our pitching staff, but it should dramatically improve the offense. Announcement to come this afternoon.
unicorn jonesDemoting Francoeur doesn’t accomplish anything. We have nobody at AAA or AA who can replace him. It would be different if we had a suitable alternative in the minors to bring up to replace him.
what about brandon jones?
jay212033Don’t want Hawpe! He already stated that if he was traded he would opt out of his contract at the end of the season.
he cant do that, and its not what he said. he will cancel his option for 2011. 2010 he will still be under contract.
When the shortstop has to play short plus half of third and half of second, it is no accident that he may make mistakes. Yunel is the one to keep. He hits in the clutch. Unload Francine, Loaf, KJ!
Braves go 5-11 over their last 16 and fall to 35-43 on the season, ten games back of the division and eight games back in the wild card.
“We need to do real well on this road trip. We need to win seven or eight of ten and try to get close to .500. Need to end the first half on a good note”.
“We’ve been right there in most games because our pitching has been so good. But we just can’t find a way to consistently score runs”.
“I know this team has a chance if we can just put some runs on the board”.
“It was a tough few weeks. Things just seem to go downhill after we swept Toronto. But there is still time. We know we are capable of playing better”.
Question: On whether the next ten to fifteen games will have an impact on the trade deadline:
“Yes, if this team is too far out of it, management has to look at what’s best for the team. If we are as far back as we are now in two weeks, then it’s going to be hard to convince anyone that we are contenders”.
The Braves old and stale, just like a loaf of bread with the mold spreading through each piece. Better throw out the top pieces if you want to have anything left for the rest of of the season.
What’s up Braves fans? Well I’m sure it’s been said on here already but it wasn’t exactly a stellar day for pitching aces yesterday in the Mets/Braves/Phils games. Wow. Who saw that coming?
I read that Cox pulled Escobar in yesterday’s game for some ragged play. Good for Cox. I wish big league mgrs. would do that more often. Reminds me of a story I heard about Gil Hodges walking out to Cleon Jones in left after he loafed on a play. Hodges asked him if he was hurt. When Jones replied he wasn’t Hodges decided to take him out of the game and walked him back to the dugout. How long a walk do you think that was for Jones?
PATHETIC!!! AS I STATED IN A BLOG A FEW WEEKS AGO, THAT’S THE WORD I USED TO DESCRIBE THIS YEAR’S VERSION OF THE ATLANTA BRAVES!! UNACCEPTABLE TO LOSE 2 OUT OF 3 TO THE “HAPLESS” ORIOLES WHO SCORED MORE RUNS AGAINST THE BRAVES THENY THE HAD IN A WEEK COMBINED!! IT ALL STARTS WITH MANAGER BOBBY COX..HE HAS COMPLETELY LOST ALL TOUCH WITH THIS TEAM AND IT’S DEFINITELY TIME FOR NEW LEADERSHIP! HE GOT ALL THE CREDIT ALL THOSE YEARS THE BRAVES WERE WINNING (AT LEAST IN THE REGULAR SEASON)..NOW IT’S TIME TO PLACE BLAME WHERE IT BELONGS AND THAT’S ON COX AND CHIPPER JONES..BOTH HAVE MADE THEIR MILLIONS AND ARE NOW JUST “BIDING” THEIR TIME IN ATLANTA..JONES HASN’T GOTTON A HIT IN HOW LONG? COME ON!!! BRING IN A MANAGER LIKE A JOE TORRE WHO KNOWS HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF HIS PLAYERS..THE BRAVES WILL CONTINUE TO “FREE-FALL” AS LONG AS COX REMAINS MANAGER..C’MON ATLANTA, I KNOW I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO FEELS THIS WAY!!..THIS TEAM HAS TALENT-THE PLAYERS JUST AREN’T BEING DEVELOPED PROPERLY..ALA JEFF FRANCOEUR! LOOK AT YOUR RECORD BRAVES, .500 AT BEST..THAT’S WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM THIS TEAM AS LONG AS YOU KEEP COX AS YOUR MANAGER..TIME FOR NEW ATTITUDE AND PHILOSOPHY! FIRE BOBBY COX!!!
Anders – I am a Yankee hater and was feelin’ for Luie on Friday night. Clearly mets should have won the series. I am looking for Yankees to go on a stretch that will negate their nine game winning streak they had earlier, because all my Yankee fan friends raved about it.
I’m really starting to get annoyed with the Braves this year. Even more so than last year. Last year, they were just Awful! This year, I really feel like they have the potential to be a really good and playoff bound team, but they can’t get it together day in and day out. Why are they so inconsistent? Why can they score 8 runs one game and 0-2 the next 5 games. They are so frustrating to watch right now.
getlukescott? – The Yanks pitching (especially the bullpen) just isn’t that good imo. They’re getting by somehow but you have to think it will catch up with them. The Mets get another shot at them later this month.
This team is dysfunctional. All the bricks, none of the mortar. Just a bunch of incompetent losers who take plays and at-bats off all the time. They don’t care. They’ve mostly made their money and they’re used to losing, so why try to change it? Good life for them. Why try? They need an ass-kicking disciplinarian of a manager. I was very happy when Bobby benches Yunel. He should bench people that don’t try either mentally or physically more frequently.

I knew I wasn’t the only one who felt that Yankees pitching wasn’t that good. Not only is it not good, it’s overpriced.
If only Braves had an inkling of the Yankee lineup, we’d be ahead of the Phillies.
Getlukescott,
The Braves have hit lefties better than righties this season. If the Braves are serious about contending and serious about adding another bat, throw the RH/LH preference out the window. We just need another quality bat that won’t make an out over 70% of the time. Right-handed, left-handed, switch-hitting, hits with his feet, I don’t care. Quality is the only criteria.
I really don’t understand why everybody is giving Bobby a hard time for benching Esco…it was more a culmination of a number of mistakes and bad attitude recently that caused him to be benched, not for just that one play.
For those fan that they want BC out of Atlanta…It not Happen…the only way is happen is if he ,himself, retire…Atlanta management if not going to Fire a HOF manager. Not even after they show his career in TWIB.
But my opinion is he need to make some change in his Coaches staff, the team is not ready to play day in day out, that is his coaching staff job, and he will adress to his player..”if you not going to give me 100% in the field you going to be bench”
getsomepower – The Yanks win on sheer volume. They have so many stars that some are always bound to be producing. That’s both in starting pitching and hitting. They wear you out. The only area they can’t do this is in their bullpen where even the great Mariano is finally showing the affects of age. The only team that has turned the tables on them are the Red Sox. They are disciplined hitters. They execute and they have a lethal bullpen. There are no ego’s on the Red Sox. They’ve morphed into the personality of their manager Terry Francona.
i was just looking at frenchy’s game log, and ive noticed hes not having too bad of a june…it gets lost a bit since his may was so ugly, but a .333 OBP this month is respectable…his slugging is low, .350, since he only has one double and one homer all month, and he is hitting .250. oh yeah, and hes walked 5 times and only struck out 4.
hes got such a long way to go to make his numbers look decent, i dont think he will end the year with pretty numbers, but if he can mix in a few extra base hits, i think he can still have some respectable month by month totals.
Did any of you guys hear Buster Onley this morning on ESPN? He said that it’s his understanding that the one and only team willing to add payroll is the Red Sox. Because of this he thinks it might be a lukewarm trading deadline this year. I for one, am surprised. I expected numerous teams willing to accept some increases (including my Mets). Sigh.
How about K-Rod getting up in Bruney’s face before the game yesterday? Gotta love it. Who is Bruney to say what he said? Did any of this reach Braves nation?
Anders – K-Rod is a little over the top with that, but Gonzo has similar antics after closing out games (which has been few and far between for us).
And what about Joba Chamberlain’s fist pumping? Nobody says anything about that. I like what Aubrey Huff did. The act is getting old, for all three of the aforementioned players.
Yeh! lets unload Escobar because he makes a few mental mistakes in the field never mind he seems to come through in the clutch farily regularly with the bat, unlike most of the players on the BRaves and what are we supposed to get in return? A defensive shortstop(a.k.a. a weak hitting singles dude) on a team that has hitting as it’s glaring weakness? And replace Frenchy with someone who can hit “10 HR’s a year?” That just seems to be an even swap there. Loaf is done after this year. He has no upside, unless a team wants a singles hitter who can’t run, who can’t get to balls in the OF that the average guy can, and he has a weak arm. So, like it or not we are stuck with GA unless we just flat out release him and we aren’t doing that, not yet anyway. Some team might want to give KJ a looksee if they don’t have to give up much for him, but that bothers me because KJ at least has the potential to be a very good offensive 2b. Note the word “potential.” I’d hate to give up on him one season to soon and he hits 30 HR’s next year for another club and all we got was some utility type guy(Pete Orr) in return. As much as I hate to say it Vazquez and a Soriano/Gonzalez deal for a RH bat that has a history of 25 HR’s per. might be the ticket. If I’m JAvier and I got to leave this team and play for a real contending team that could score me a few runs it would be a blessing. We could plug Medlen in for him till Hudson is ready after the Allstar break.
Anders – Yanks have been getting bounced from the playoffs since their last World Series because they get outpitched.
The Red Sox seem to have the formula to beat them on a consistent basis. Certainly I don’t think the Braves are going to win 2 of 3 from them at the end of the month (although I would like to see a Joba/Hanson matchup). Mets beat Yankees with more heart than anything else.
marlins rejected Francoeur for Cody Ross trade proposal before the McLouth deal, so it appears that FW is attempting to do something. I think FW would do very well with an owner who doesn’t mind spending money.
Anders-You’re still holding on to that idea that the Mets really have money, aren’t you. It’s just not going to happen-they’re as broke as everyone else.
Monty: You misunderstood my 10 HR comment. I met who has 10 HR now at this point in the season, That would make him a top tier guy but not a superstar. Sorry that I was unclear. Frenchy is useless. To get rid of him, we will have to package him with somebody other teams want: Vazquez. I stand by my belief that Escobar is mentally challenged. His base running errors are legion.
Two things that are very likely to occur when a team plays the BRaves. Their slumping hitters will bust out of their slumps and their pitchers (if only for 1 game) will find their control, their lost sinker will return, their breaking ball will mystify, and their 90 MPH fastball will be plenty fast enough and they will significantly lower their ERA.
getsomepower – The Yanks get bounced from the playoffs the last few years because they are built for the long season – that’s where the volume pays off. In a playoff series the teams are more focused on the core group and they don’t match up as well.
As for K-Rod, I agree he’s over the top with the end of game thing but he’s got the WS and closer stats to back it up. Bruney was way, way out of his weight class on this one. He came out looking like the chump he is. K-Rod said on Saturday that it’s something that should be said face to face on the field if Bruney really felt that way. When Bruney didn’t approach him, K-Rod took the iniative. I think Bruney has been reading too many of his press clippings about how valuable an 8th inning guy he is and all. Let’s see if he can stay on the field for a couple of months in a row first.
What’s likely to happen to the Braves (barring any major improvements) over the next half month is that they will be 10 games out of first and 6-7 games out of the wildcard.
Lew- You could be right. However, Minaya came out publicly about a month back and said he has the go ahead to increase payroll if he needs to. I realize these are just words but he’ll look bad now if word gets out the Mets could have picked up a bat but balked because of the money. We’ll see.

Biggest downside to Kendrick is that he’s injury prone. But he is a couple years younger than Kelly and has more upside.

Kendrick has more “potential” than either Prado or Infante and with Infante out he’d be a another RH option at 2B.

Maybe because Kendrick isn’t hitting all that well either! Both guys have potential but both guys really need a change of scenery.

Reminds me of a story I heard about Gil Hodges walking out to Cleon Jones in left after he loafed on a play. Hodges asked him if he was hurt.

Quality is the only criteria.

getsomepower – The Yanks win on sheer volume. They’ve morphed into the personality of their manager Terry Francona.

hes got such a long way to go to make his numbers look decent, i dont think he will end the year with pretty numbers, but if he can mix in a few extra base hits, i think he can still have some respectable month by month totals.

We’d have a powerhouse team with a Ted Turner/Frank Wren owner/GM combo

Monty: You misunderstood my 10 HR comment. I met who has 10 HR now at this point in the season, That would make him a top tier guy but not a superstar. Sorry that I was unclear. Frenchy is useless. To get rid of him, we will have to package him with somebody other teams want: Vazquez. I stand by my belief that Escobar is mentally challenged. His base running errors are legion.

Mets got burned by Bernie Madoff, so they’re trying to hold on to the money they got.

We’ll see.
