No way the Braves let Gonzo and Soriano leave next year unless there is an order from Liberty to sell the farm or they just prove to be ineffective. Said it before, the Braves can spend as much as they want, the money is there. Those caps are self imposed.

That said, they have some of you pretty brainwashed into believing they are 2 steps away from qualify for food stamps. Folks, there is a reason they would never show their books to the union.

Personally, I would like to see baseball go to a salary cap of some type like the NBA or NFL. Then you would really see the difference in a smart baseball organization and on that spends money like the federal government. Would be no more excuses for being a small market. Which Atlanta isn’t by the way….

Steve from OH, you might be right. But if he has a big year this year, I’d have to imagine he’ll be at least Type B.

Back to the draft, I don’t buy Crow not going within the top 6. I see some team taking him. Which may help us get Wheeler or Matzek.

Gil-And what exactly, makes you think they are going to spend all this money you think they have available? Past performance? They may not qualify for food stamps, but with the attendance we’re NOT putting up so far, you can bet the payroll won’t go up. Gonzo and Soriano are making a combined $10 mil this year and both would be Free Agents this winter. What makes you think they’ll be any cheaper than they are now or that the Braves would pay $15 or so mil to re-sign them?

I know I’m fighting a losing battle here because everyone is in love with Hanson, don’t get me wrong I wish him well I hope he wins 300 games for us. But I do see it’s hard for people to seperate the hype from reality. Will he be great? Man I hope so, I’ll be his biggest supporter. Is he talented? Extremely. But the hype borders on the mythical. Adjectives like “great” and “electric” have been tossed about in reference to his debut.(wrong) He has been called “Mr”.Hanson, or reported that the Hanson “era” has begun, etc..etc.. but lets look at the facts or stats: his line was 6 innings-6 hits, 3 of those hits left the yard, one was a double by the opposing pitcher. 2 singles,(16 total bases in 6 innings) and all he gets is one compliment after another and don’t you dare criticize his performance, if you critcize you weren’t “watching the game.” Thats crazy, I watched everyone of those HR’s leave the park. By listening to reporters and bloggers I don’t think the guy could have done anything wrong in most peoples eyes once he struck out the side that one time. But here’s what I’m getting at when it comes to predjudicial hype. In Kris Medlen’s debut he pitched into the 4th(faced 4 batters in the 4th and he lost his composure, lost his control and had to be taken out) he gave up 3 measly singles in those innings, (3 total bases) and what do reporters write? He got “pounded.” No “flashes of brilliance”, no era beginning, no “great for a while.” He improved each time out but still everyone wanted Hanson and I can understand that he’s 6′6″ and throws 96 that’s not hard to understand. But Medlen has pitched 14.1 innings. given up only 11 hits, only 4 of those hits were for extra bases. So, thats 15 total bases in 14.1 innings and 16 total bases by HAnson in just 6. Don’t tell me that’s not hype. If Medlen had gotten “pounded” like Hanson did yesterday just imagine the headlines and the wrath of most bloggers who give Hanson’s work high marks. Enough said.

Lew, they will spend whatever they want to spend… They may make excuses but in the end, they will spend what they want. if they choose not to, they won’t. There is a big difference between can’t and won’t.

That said, sense so much is made about the money, why don’t we have two leagues that are divided by payroll? Can have New York, Boston, LA in one league and everybody else in another.

I am just tired of hearing everybody cry because they can’t afford to compete. Well, if you can’t afford the price of admission, don’t go to the show.

Baseball could make it fair for everybody if they had the will. Just seems folks are always looking for the easy way out.

BASteve, re Francoeur to the minors: Brandon isn’t slugging, the rest of the AAA OFs are scrubs, Anderson can’t play every day, and Diaz would just get exposed with more playing time. There’s no obvious replacement for the guy. Blows, but there it is. Only bloggers can get away with thinking that change, just for the sake of change, is a brilliant maneuver. The Braves’ FO has to give it a little more thought than that.

Franceour batting 6th in tonight’s lineup? Unreal, but not surprising. As a long time Braves fan, it pains me to see Bobby Cox stubbornly refusing to bench Jeff Franceour. If Bobby’s reasoning is that Franceour’s defense is too valuable, ok I could buy that (even though I would disagree with that reasoning, I can “buy” it). Bobby can “value” Franceour’s defense and still bat him 8th. But 6th? And 5th yesterday? Dude is the WORST bat in the line-up. He’s killing us offensively. I could CARE LESS about his “confidence” being affected by such a move. I care about WINNING, not providing “welfare feel-good” for sentimental, so-called Braves fans who need to see Franceour play because he is a “hometown hero”.

If Franceour is still starting when Omar Infante comes back, then I’ll start advocating for Bobby Cox to retire. If he doesnt, then I feel that he would need to be fired. I appreciate what Bobby has done for the Braves since he has been with the Braves. However, if Braves fans rightfully feel that unproductive, past their prime players should be “shown the door”……then the same thinking has to be applied to the Manager who refuses to get past his “affection” to Jeff Franceour. It pains me to see the Braves not putting the best line-up out there that they can. It especially pains me to see Jeff Franceour batting any higher than 8th in the batting line-up.

“…don’t get me wrong I wish him well I hope he wins 300 games for us.” monty

Perhaps you should set your sights a little lower. 24 men in the HISTORY of baseball have won 300 games.

I just hope he helps anchor our staff at a reasonable salary for the next 5-6 years and gives us a chance to win. Something a guy with his ability is SURELY capable of doing. The fun part is watching him attempt to do so.

If at any point, his ability goes south and he doesn’t give us a chance to win. Most of us won’t have much issue with brushing him to the side, for the next phenom.

It’s about hope, dude. The only hope that I had with Glavine coming back is that he didn’t shatter a hip slipping on the dugout steps.

In 2007, Glavine COULD HAVE and WOULD HAVE provided us with the innings, to NOT have to make the move for Tex later in the year (as we didn’t need another bat – but JS couldn’t find an arm).

Glavine might have even helped us in 2008. But he got hurt. Glavine’s job in 2009 was to “bridge the gap” to Hanson. Hanson’s here and Glavine didn’t pitch.

As for the Medlen/Hanson discussion? Do we have to root for only one of them? Or as Braves fans, can we like BOTH of them? Just wondering.

How can Jeff Franceour play 4 years with Chipper Jones and not learn how to “wait” on a pitch? Chipper Jones drives the ball to all fields. I am sick and tired of hearing a number of you moronic so called Braves fans blaming Terry Pendleton for Franceour SUCKING. Who needs a hitting coach when you have CHIPPER JONES hitting on your team, lol. If Chipper was one of those players who wasnt willing to help the younger players, then I could “understand” the uproar on Terry Pendleton. But come on, lol. I can only imagine the wealthy of information that Chipper Jones has given Franceour that has fallen on deaf ears. Either that, or Jeff Franceour simply does not have the ability to make the adjustments that are necessary to being a good Major League player.

Another typical at-bat from Franceour. Pulls the shoulder and badly misses the first pitch. Amazingly lays off the low and away second pitch. Fouls a very hittable pitch for strike two. Then lunges and pokes his bat and pops a fly to right. Chipper does that and hits homers. Franceour…enough said. Please Frank Wren, make Bobby bench him. Or at least make him bat Franceour 8th in the batting line-up.

Actually, I don’t think there has been any AGREEMENT on the issue. Some still want Martin to play everyday. And, I don’t see how you can come to the conclusion that he’s better as a utility guy, “nothing more”. His only prolonged stretch of starting everyday (last August) produced immense results.
