Where’s Kotchman going to bat? Insane. Diaz, Prado, Ross, and Infante off the bench. That trade made alot of problems go away. Also, I say McLouth moves to LF next year for Schaefer. Schaef’s defense is to good.
This may be a wake up call for Frenchy, also.
Oh, and I noticed his (look away, Lew) BABIP is a low .262. Looks like his offensive numbers will improve a bit. Think Frank noticed that? He hinted at that kinda stuff during the Vazquez acquisition.
So the roster is changing quickly. The pitching staff is a man down for now — not a problem since Hanson will be called up on Saturday. With McLouth joining the roster and Hanson being activated, will Blanco and Barton be sent down by the end of the week?
AWESOME deal. Let’s see, pay Glavine $1M for being on active roster, another $1M after 30 days on the roster or pay an All-Star OF $2M this year? People bitched about Wren not addressing the OF and as recently as two hours ago whined about Glavine (who smart fans knew wouldn’t help us this year even back when he signed that incentive laden deal), where are they now?
I call things like I see it and have criticized Wren in the past for things, but you can’t argue with today’s moves.
According to Pittsburgh Post Gazette: Pirates trade Nate McLouth to Braves – The return is two pitchers, Jeff Locke and Charlie Morton, and outfielder Gorkys Hernandez.
Thank you, Frank Wren, for realizing your job is to make this team competitive, find creative ways to get deals done and protect the team’s most vital long-term prospects. You did that all today.
Moreover, you signaled to the players on the 25 man roster (and throughout the organization) that you are serious about winning right now and you are going to do your best to put them in a position to do just that.
McClouth is NOT a “bridge” to ANYONE! He is the future of CF here. He is only 27 years old, a Gold Glover, All Star last year, and the Braves will control him cheaply for a while (through 2012 season according to cot’s mlb contracts)
Schafer will either be traded for something els or learn a new position in the OF….he can’t hit a fastball for goodness sake
Wow. MLB Network lit up Braves. Talking about how they needed to let Glavine pitch in Triple A. Yeah bozos HE DID. And about how this trade is trying to win over fans from the release. Like how they signed Lowe right after Smoltz left.
love the mclouth deal; but don’t focus on the gold glove as he had one of the worst defensive ratings last year – there is an article on it i’ll find and repost. however – great move and he can swing over the left. great move – solid move. and he’s signed for several years. fantastic move.
i was shocked, still am, about glavine, but with hanson coming up and the mclouth trade it’s time to pack up those ’90s memories and move on to the ’10s …

That to go with Mac/Escobar/Hanson/CJ/Lowe/JJ etc.

k with a k you love the mclouth deal and and hanson coming up but neither one of those things doesnt happen if they dont release glavine. braves are much better off with hanson and mclouth than with glavine.
If you don’t know much about McLouth, your gonna love him as a player. He makes diving catches night after night, Steals bases, and hits HRs. One problem right? hes left handed. But he hits .298 this year against lefties and about .230 against rightys so far. Also hes signed cheap for years to come and still has room to grow. Possibly a 25/25 guy who can still hit for average and win goldgloves. I have watched him since he was in AA Altoona and he is a guy you want on your team.
DOB Always hated the guys on this blog who called for bobby cox and frank wren to be fired eight, maybe nine times a day. Today im the one who thinks they should go. And i dont give a rats ass if their reason for screwing Glavine was to get Mclouth, this was CLASSLESS. The reason big name free agents came to play for the braves in the 90’s for less money, is because of the quality of the people surrounding this team. I DID NOT think they should have resigned Glavine (who i love as a player)in the offseason. Up to that point they owed him nothing. But after signing him, they DID owe him the opportunity to end his career where it started. Maybe he didnt have anything left, but what ballplayer wants to find that out in some jerks office, and not on the field where it counts? No one will sign with the braves again unless they are paid top dollar to do so. NO MORE CLASS=NO MORE DISCOUNTS
The McLouth trade is great news. I have a feeling he will be a corner outfielder, though. Schafer has a better arm and more range, IMO. But we get a guy with power and speed who can hit fourth. Morton was always trade bait, and neither of the others are anywhere near the majors.
I am sad Tommy is gone, but it is probably for the best. A couple of so-so rehab starts didn’t really give me much hope that he could contribute much and now we have Hanson in the majors.
McLouth is going to get a bit more expensive in coming years, but he’s a great fit for us.
My brother called and told me the news on everything that occured as I was in the library studying, to say I was shocked is an understatement. McClouth move is a very solid move for the Braves and it is going to take pressure off of KJ so he doesn’t have to bat at the top.
I was pissed originally with how the Braves treated Glavine and to an extent still am. But Frank Wren is doing what is best for the team and while Hanson is far from proven, he can’t keep him in triple A while putting those number up. PErsonally I hope Glavine get a chance to pitch for a contender, though I will cringe if it is for the Phillies or Mets, but if we face him I hope we put up the runs we did on Glavine his first 2 years against us when he left us for more money and for the Mets. In away the Braves got him back for wanting more money and years when he left for the Mets, and maybe I am just cynical but I applaud FW for making the moves that he did.
Hey DOB
Are you busy? Are you wishing you had taken an extra day off? I can just see Ms Rogers sitting on her couch laughing . . . or running on the treadmill.
if you love New York sooooo much and hate Atlanta then feel free to hit 75 North and don’t stop until you get back to your Trashy City, FAT Women, and Cold crappy Weather!
That was more of a question but if they had wanted him, he would have been in the deal, right smart a@@. my girl friends last name was Pennski…I think, maybe, something like that. Oh, I don’t hate U.
The Braves gave up way too much as usual. Three youngs players with relatively high ceilings that would be under club control for over 15 years combined. McLouth is a good player but not worth nearly what they gave up – great trade by a Pirates team that finally knows what it is doing. The Braves aren’t going anywhere this year and will regret this trade a la Wainwright and Teixeira.
And DOB, McLouth is far from strong defensively by any reasonable metric. In fact, most metrics have him as one of the worst defensive center fielders in the league last year. That Gold Glove last year was a joke. He needs to be shifted to left but his bat isn’t strong enough to carry that position (on a team with a decent OF that is).
This trade reeks of Bobby Cox. Veteran presence valued over youth with potential.
It is possible for Wren to be a **** regarding Glavine’s release and make a strong move for McLouth. He’s not all bad or all good. Wren will be judged by how much his team wins. That’s the only fair way to judge a general manager. If he doesn’t win enough, nobody here will like him.
Well my over all feeling is this, I am happy for the here and now/future Braves and Sad to see Glavine go for old time sakes. I will feel better once Hanson records his first strike out though!! Looking like a better team with a power pitching staff!!! Go Bravos!! Thanks for everything Tommy G!!!
I’m.. angry. I just posted on Mark Bradley’s blog about this. Mark posted that he feels Wren made the right move with Glavine. I just dont think this was handled properly at all. I want to see Tommy Hanson just as much as any other Braves fan, but I dont think that Glavine’s release should have been handled in this manner. The Braves should either have not signed him this winter, or, waited for him to pitch a few major league games, and see what the results were, before making this decision. Frank said this decision with Glavine was based on “performance”, but Glavine pitched six scoreless innings his last time out. Doesnt that deserve at least a chance?
First, the Braves lose Glavine in 2002, more so Tom’s fault, at that time, I think, because John Scherholtz wrote in his book Built to Win that we offered him a 2 year, 10 mil a year deal. This time, I have to blame this release on Frank Wren. I hope that Tommy Hanson turns out to be the next… John Smoltz, but I dont think that Tom Glavine should have been released like this, after 244 wins, and all he meant to this team, and this city, for eighteen years.
Let’s wait and see if Glavine pitches anywhere this year and averages more than 14 outs a start and less than last year’s 5.40 era before we crucify Frank Wren.
I just have to say Wren is making all the right choices. Calling Tommy Hanson up, aquiring a CF with power and speed. Moving Kris Medlen to the bulpen.
I think it’s a fair trade. Considering Nate Mclouth it’s still pretty young(28), and he is signed through the 2012 season. 3 years/$15.75M (2009-11), plus 2012 club option.
When Schafer is definitely ready, Mclouth could be traded. I assume he’ll be the leadoff hitter.

the yankees will win the ws with more pitching you will se tommy g in a yankee uniform soon, he will be a yankee, or a royal you heard it here first he might join smoltz.
i love this trade. McClouth is a centerfielder, as is Schafer, so we had no space for Hernandez. I wish him well. Charlie Morton was never going to be in our rotation, Medlen and Hanson were ahead of him and Hudson is on the way back. So be it. Locke is a ways away, so you can’t count on him at all. what we have done is added speed and to power to our major league line-up. I’ve always been a “forget the farm” type fan. We added an All-Star centerfielder and didn’t lose a single player off our major league roster. this is a good deal.
For those saying Schafer will move over to a corner upon his return…
Nate McLouth is not a great Centerfielder, he’s just ok. When Schafer is ready, he’ll be the CF and McLouth will slide over. McLouth has a strong throwing arm and he’s fast, but he’s not really gold-glove caliber, gold-glove notwithstanding.
No way Jordan gets traded, with the farm team’s lack of depth in the outfield (Heyward not withstanding)
We’ll see who’s defense is best suited for CF, but Jordan WILL NOT be traded away.
The guys announcing tonights game do not seem too broken up about Glavines release and seem more interested in Hanson starting Saturday and Nat coming on over!!
Just head about Glavine, Hanson, and McClouth! WOW great day! Love Nate, speedy guy, will be a great leadoff hitter for the Braves and will allow KJ to drive in runs with his doubles!!! Awesome! Feel horrible for Glavine, but he was going to be paid way too much for services we did not need from him. Is Medlen going to the pen for sure?
game is on-line at http://www.sticktv.net, channel 2. password is sticktv.net; you don’t need to download anything to watch. showing the peachtree feed. frank wren will be up next inning to discuss the trade/release.
Congrats Braves fans. just heard during the Yankee game about the Braves getting MCClouth. Solid acquisition. Plus hanson’s coming up. And they released Tom Glavine. Sounds like the Braves recognized they couldn’t wait until July to make their move.
Good marks. Interesting to see what this spurs the Mets or Phils to do. Got to run out for a bit. Might be back to chat later.

McClouth and Hanson NOW… Hudson likely back in about 8 weeks.
I challenge ANY team in baseball to improve themselves THAT much mid-season.
Unless the Mets or Phillies QUICKLY make an impact trade of their own, the Braves are now the NL East favorites in my opinion.

Dave, any opinion on Glavine’s release?

I assume he’ll be the leadoff hitter.

i love this trade.

Congrats Braves fans. just heard during the Yankee game about the Braves getting MCClouth. Solid acquisition. Plus hanson’s coming up. And they released Tom Glavine. Sounds like the Braves recognized they couldn’t wait until July to make their move.
Good marks. Interesting to see what this spurs the Mets or Phils to do. Got to run out for a bit. Might be back to chat later.
