I can’t count how many times I have read “we have released another future hall of famer”, I don’t care if he is a future president of the USA. Right now I find it very hard to believe that anybody will make a solid argument that Glavine is the best arm we can throw out there on the fifth day. We have hanson waiting and hudson rehabing. I know the situation sucks, but one day we are all fed up that we are losing and Wren is not doing everything possible to field the best team, and the next day we have everyone whining because we didn’t let him pitch one game so that we would have the liberty of paying him a million dollars. I am a Glavine fan, and I am a Smoltz fan, but at the end of the day I am a BRAVES fan and that is what is important to me, FIELD THE BEST TEAM!!! That is what this is about, anything less would be not doing their job. The GM has to make tough decisions and as long as he is making these decisions for the best of the team then he is doing his job. Glavine did the best thing for himself and his family when he went to the METS, and Wren did the right thing today for the Braves, lets all move on and enjoy be BRAVES fans.
In my heart, I feel bad about the Glavine situation — fond memories of lots of great Braves’ moments. But….my head says that it was unlikely that he was going to have much left and that other pitching options are better. One thing to remember is that Hudson’s rehab is going fairly well and might be available in mid-August. If the youngsters (Hanson, Medlin, etc.) don’t do well, then Hudson can be in the rotation down the stretch.
The Pirates’ top prospect is CF Andrew McCutchen. The Pirates don’t need Schafer, so I’m guessing they’re getting a couple of pitchers and, oh, how about Freeman?
Finally, a move that makes baseball sense! Hanson and Medlen and Morton have all performed way better than Glavine this year. Therefore there is no reason to bring in Glavine. Sorry, but you get no sentimental credit after leaving for the Mets and your maximum paycheck. What goes around comes around.
This is a business, and Glavine knows it. Any current loyalty he may have otherwise deserved from the fans and the Braves organization was negated back when he left for the Mets.
McLouth has big time range in CF…remember last year in Pit? Not exactly thrilled about the way he did Glavine at the last minute, but gotta give him credit for getting an All-Star CF.
Savannah Guy: “Some of you people that see Tom Glavine as a traitor because he betrayed the team and left to play for the Mets for a few more pieces of silver are living in some kind of myopic, naive, alternate universe. Did you Glavine bashers ever bother to look at the facts of the story or are you just that shallow? Glavine couldn’t work out a deal with John Schuerholz and Glavine took the rap.”
BS like you said he went for a relatively few more $ but nothing significant. He basically bowed down to the union who insisted he take the better deal cause it would “look bad” if he didnt (TG was a union rep back then), and put his family through hell with all the commuting etc. just so he could stick it to the Braves.
Good riddance…loyalty works both ways.
Can’t say I disagree with letting Glavine go, but NOW??? It is simply unprofessional! I have been a lifelong Braves fan and can’t understand many moves the front office has made through the years. However, no one could ever say Schurholtz was unprofessional in his approach. Wren should be ashamed of letting Tommy fully rehab, declare he was ready to start this weekend and THEN let him go. It really makes me sick. A sad day for us as we will have egg on our face all over the National Media for the immediate future. Also, realize that potential free agents will look at this situation and question joining our club down the road because of it. Just sorry, UNPROFESSIONAL TIMING!!
We shouldn’t have signed him in the first place, but now we’re covering our tracks and wasting 1 million dollars by releasing him? PWHjort
do you ever know anything about what you post about? They aren’t wasting 1mill , he doesn’t get paid unless he makes the 25 roster which he now won’t. They are saving 1 mill. . please learn something about baseball other that that theoretical crap you are always spouting.
McLouth! I was just thinking that as excited as I am about Hanson, pitching is not our problem! It’s hitting! I hope we are going after even another bat. I really do.
And I agree with you guys. I don’t feel sorry for Glav. I appreciate all he’s done, but we want to WIN!
You guys are gonna love McLouth. Leadoff speed, hits for average, decent power, Gold Glove, he’s the real deal. Now, tell this Pirates fan about the prospects you think are heading to the Iron City…..
Seems pretty much of a coincidence that rumors of McClouth fly the same day they do the Glavine deal. Smoke and mirrors maybe to deflect the criticism?
And agreeing with many here who say the Braves shouldn’t have signed Glavine in the first place. The mistake was to sign him, then let him rehab before cutting his throat.
I just heard the news as I tuned into the Braves game tonight on MLB internet radio.
First Smoltz! Now Glavine!
This GM is cutthroat! Where’s the loyalty? You just don’t treat people this way!
This move makes me sick to my stomach. Frank makes me sick to my stomach. It’s the same kind of feeling I had when I first heard that Smoltz was traded.
This GM doesn’t deserve our support. I would really like to see Frank now told that he’s no longer a part of the Braves organization. The man has lost all my respect.
Tom deserved to return! Tom deserved BETTER!
Thanks for your great career as a Brave Tom! Sign on with the Phillies — and show Frank up.
Savannah Guy, Glavine was maxing out at 84 MPH two years ago with the Mets. What part of 43 years old and coming off of elbow and shoulder surgery don’t you understand?
