What I wonder is what is going to happen when Hudson gets off the DL. It still seems like we have 1 too many strong starters, and one too few strong hitters…
Most now. If you look back in July 2007, most here liked the Teixeira trade too. Now everyone acts like they knew all-along it was bad. Same will happen here if McLouth is bad and Morton, Hernandez and/or Locke will their full potential.
Frank Wren has done moves that have the present and future in mind. And he has done so in an exceptional manner. It’s about time he is given some credit for what he’s done in his short tenure thus far.
Mixxo, totally agree on the hands thing. Too many young kids want to by the rig that “so and so” has, and then wonder why they don’t sound like them.
If I played on Eddie Van Halen’s rig it wouldn’t sound like Eddie. But if he played on mine, it would. Period. Hell, if you put Eddie on a bass, running through a keyboard amp with an Ibanez Tube Screamer…. it would sound like Eddie.
Thanks guys on the pleasant comments about my big post.
I think my favorite thing about this trade is that it gives us a really good “shot” this year. But sets EVERYTHING up to begin a new run next year. Along with giving Wren some serious trade bait this winter. Especially if Hudson comes back strong and the option is exercised.
Definitely an exciting time to be a Braves fan, regardless of the results of what is left in this season.
Best hitting catcher in the NL is locked up for a while (maybe the best hitting catcher in all of baseball – Mauer gets to DH, keeping his legs fresh and his bat in the lineup for the Twins). We’ve got one of the leagues most exciting young pitchers in JJJ under our control for a while. With the games MOST exciting prospect now up for good (barring a major choke job by the kid). We’ve got a star on the rise in Yunel Escobar. Also under our control for a while. Our CF of the future got a taste and should be better because of it. We just acquired a guy that plays the game right. Is a two time all-star, and has a GG (and eventually might move to a corner OF spot). Add to that, Heyard and Freeman are on their way.
Like I said. Exciting time to be looking ahead as a Braves fan.
Oh yeah… We get to watch the greatest swith hitter, and future HOF 3B, Chipper Jones play (when not injured), for the next 3 years.
if we still had tex i think the majority of braves fans would approve of that trade. the problem is he is not with us anymore and was only here for a year. thats what hurts. mclouth will be here for four years unless we trade him. so, there will be a lot more time for mclouth to prove his worth.
as far as tonights game goes, i honestly believed that after last nights game we would win this game by 10. i was very very wrong. i just thought we would be jacked to get out here and go on a tear. losing this game would kill all momentum from the game last night. its not too late…. but now with runners on the corners and less than two outs it doesnt look good. it would be a true shame to lose this game. mclouth or no mclouth we need to find a way to win this game and take this series. the cubbies are tired of losing too so if they win this one they could easily win tomorrow’s game.
I have not posted today. Busy all day long. All I have to said right now is …………WHAT A GREAT ADD TO THIS TEAM MCLOUTH IS……….. Im very excited by this move………leadoff hitter trouble is over for good. Wow. This guy just brought with him so much stability to this lineup………..2 great hitter in front of chipper and 1 exceptional one behind him. Couldnt ask for more.
Releasing TG always is a sad news for a great warrior, but is for the better of the team. 2 great young arms join the team.
I wont be looking back on this trade if it explodes on our face 2 years from now, it was a good move at this moment, Im 100% pleased with it. We just got stronger. Weaker in the minors but we have enough rookies and young players, McLouth is a right move.
How good was this guy Hernandez? I know they say he is good, but not sure how good……….could anyone tell me more about it?
Mark, your 10:10 raises a good point. Like that trade, this trade might not be able to be “judged” until all the prospects careers have unfolded a bit.
But the big difference between the two trades? For starters, the Braves didn’t need Tex. They needed pitching. BADLY. But JS was unable to land a top notch pitcher, despite being willing to move top prospects. Tex was the “best” he could do, and he gambled that stacking the lineup would pay off, like adding a pitcher. It didn’t.
Secondly, NOT A SOUL ever realistically thought that Tex was going to sign long term with the Braves. There was ZERO chance of a “hometown” discount. As there was ZERO chance of the Braves making the highest offer to assure that the Boras client would stay. We gave up five prospects for two rentals.
This trade is about trading one REALLY good prospect (Gorkys – who we got for “free” in the Renteria/JJJ trade), one decent pitching prospect who could be the next John Smoltz or the next Jason Marquis, or the next Kyle Davies (Morton) , and Locke who (like Feliz), might end up being the hidden gem in the deal, for Nate McClouth who is under our control (and not arbitration elligible) for the next 4 years.
WAY different. This trade is way “safer” than the Tex trade was.
Mfin EOF gave up a hit too. You cant use Soriano every game. Gonzo and Moylan already pitched. When you only have 3 good relievers not much you can do in extras other than hold your breath. Should help with Medlen though.
Eric from MO: “Savannah and everyone else who is complaining how Glavine was handled, dont blame the Braves, blame Hanson. He forced their hand. You couldnt keep him down any longer. He was too dominant.”
You boiled it down very quickly and efficiently. Its either Hanson or Glavine, and Wren and others (based on 2 months watching Hanson at AAA and Glavine rehab) made the obvious choice. Case closed.
EOF gave up a bloop. Bennett just constantly sucks. He shouldn’t even be on the team. Have plenty of relievers in the minors that could pitch better than Bennett.
RC, Glav didn’t retire. He was released. I’m guessing with as much need for pitching as there is out there and the fact that he said he didn’t want to retire means that he’ll play somewhere this season. So no, no hall same year as Maddux.
Doc Holliday, Hernandez probably has the potential to be the same player as McClouth a few years down the road, Very good speed, above average bat, fine defensively. But its just potential, so for now it looks like a great trade.
Pete & Eric from MO, you guys pretty much nailed what Wren said on the radio broadcast earlier.
He flat out said that when they analyzed it, they felt THE TEAM was better off with Hanson making those starts in the 5th starter’s spot, than Glavine.
