Double for Chipper to tie the game, pinch hitting for Lowe. Ball bounced against the wall and failed to bounce out, unlike many of McCann’s doubles this year. Blanco scores all the way from first base.
Now KJ has a chancet to drive in the go-ahead run and give Lowe the win.
Way to go Hoss! On MLB Network Mitch Williams just said, “That’s pathetic. Guy’s totally fooled, trying to foul off the pitch and he hits it to dead center field off the wall.”
Packed house tonight, pretty sure 40 percent are cubby fans but i’ll take it as the place looks better with buts in the seats. It’s also nice to see them shut up when the braves actually do something.
Chipper was fooled and hit it that far. He meant from a pitchers standpoint. I like Mitch though. MLB Network isn’t ashamed of doggin players and such. It’s more fan like ( with the reactions and comments) than the standard ESPN.
but if you want to go the scouting report route I’d say that they’ve both gotten rave reviews… (STEVE)
yeah, I am pretty skeptical about defensive stat analysis even now. Still too many that don’t agree with what I see, though I think they are much better than they were 4 years ago
I got it when he said it (may not have been clear when I typed it). And I agree with you, I think it’s great that MLB lets guys go off on players more than ESPN seems to.
Richie why would we go after a pitcher who is going to cost a ton of propects when we still need offense. Currently our rotation is JJ Lowe Vazquez Hanson and Kawakami. Other than the Red Sox no one has a better rotation.
nolie, you know how much I hate subjective analysis, but I agree. I think the new defensive stats have a lot to add to the conversation, but they’re not nearly as informative as a simple BA/OBP/SLG line. I prefer the Fielding Bible to UZR if I had to choose though. Still, for me watching the guys play is the best metic at this point.
I give the trade a “B”. I’m really excited to have Nate McLouth, but I do think we gave up too much. Gorkys and Morton, sure…that’s from a position of strength in our farm system, as FW said…but why throw in Locke? That kid could be a dominant lefty, along the lines of a Cole Hamels.
Still, this team was built during the offseason to win now (see the additions of veterans Lowe, G Anderson, Vasquez, and Kawakami), and a solid leadoff man might be the key to getting our offense going. Pitching has been solid so far, and it’s about to get downright filthy with Medlen headed to the ‘pen and Hanson coming in like a freight train. So offense needed an upgrade, and it got one!
I’d love to see a few games with Diaz in right and Garrett in left, so we don’t have to watch Frenchy go 0-5 night after night. My guess is that next year, we have McLouth in right, Diaz in left, and Schafer in center. I don’t know about you guys, but I’d be happy with that (assuming Schafer’s AAA seasoning works out this year).
Very, very excited for the rest of this season. Go Braves!
Dave Valle, who’s also in the MLB studio, called Mitch out too (in jest). He said something like, “it’s pathetic if you’re a pitcher. If you’re a hitter it’s pretty sweet.”
Savannah Guy, Glavine was maxing out at 84 MPH two years ago with the Mets. What part of 43 years old and coming off of elbow and shoulder surgery don’t you understand? – Stinky
No, odorous one, I get that. 43 years old is an issue for any player, but the fact that he was throwing mid-eighties before and after Tommy John is not unusual. Smoltz and many other pitchers have overcome that. Granted, Glavine was most likely not going to be a great starter this year. Maybe he would’ve beat the odds. Only you and some others on this board seem to possess the all-seeing, all-knowing crystal ball.
My disgust in this situation comes from the way this was handled by Braves management. Glavine should’ve been allowed to take the mound once more for the Braves before he retires. He should have been given the opportunity to succeed or fail on his own, not be dismissed for a contrived reason such as velocity. It’s not about a few million dollars, it’s about promises made and broken.
What part of good character, ethical business and keeping your word don’t you understand?
The Tom Glavine release was a serious tug at my heart today. As a early teen and teenager in the early to mid ’90’s, Tom Glavine and David Justice were my two favorite players (Dale Murphy was my favorite player as a child and who I idolized when I first started learning baseball). However, I completely understand the decision from a baseball business aspect. I will miss Tommy (again) though and wish him the best of luck and look forward to seeing him inducted into the Hall of Fame when he is eligible.
Savannah and everyone else who is complaining how Glavine was handled, dont blame the Braves, blame Hanson. He forced their hand. You couldnt keep him down any longer. He was too dominant.
Savannah Guy, I sympathize a little. But if Glavine takes the mound, even once, he costs $1 million and the Braves may not be able to make the McLouth deal. MLB was reporting that the Braves have no ability to add any payroll after this trade. So it would be a nice story to let Glavine take a bow and retire as a Brave. But it would hurt the club for this and quite possibly future seasons.
It’s awfully easy for us to spend other people’s money. A tough call, but I think (and hope) Wren made the right one.
Mike – a .250 hitter? Think you might be under valuing him just a little? For one thing, at 27 years old he’s entering his prime years. Last season he hit .276, which is great… but I’d take .250 too, even though that’s well below his career average, if it came with the 26 HRs, 23 SB in 26 attempts, league leading 46 doubles, and gold glove defense he provided last season. The moves made today give the braves power in the outfield, speed on the bases, and likely a better bullpen with Medlin moving to the BP thanks to the Glavine trade that allowed Hanson to be called up.
Eric from Mo. “Savannah and everyone else who is complaining how Glavine was handled, dont blame the Braves, blame Hanson. He forced their hand. You couldnt keep him down any longer. He was too dominant.”
