Do you notice the timing of the news of the McLouth trade? It’s no accident it came shortly after the Glavine announcement.
Wren hastened along the Lowe signing, giving Boras the money he wanted — as his attempted “cover-up” to the Smoltz trade.
Now he’s done the same with McLouth and Glavine, keeping Tom’s hopes active — with minor league start after minor league start — until he could hide his dirty dealings with Glavine under the “cloud” of the McLouth trade!
Shame on you Frank! This speaks much about your character!
Scott- we’ll see. I hope I’m wrong. Three top prospects for a .250 hitter, now dubbed the savior of the Braves season, doesn’t exactly make me get all giggly inside. How ’bout a lights-out closer. Has anyone looked at the Braves ERA from the seventh inning on?
Fine Mike leave then. Who cares if we have the best 3 pitcher tandem at the top of our rotation. Who cares if we have the 2nd best prospect making his debut Sat. Who cares if we have the best hitting catcher. Who cares that we just made a trade for a 5 tool player. You are right nothing has changed. We should all stop being Braves fans because no team has ever gone though a 3year stretch where they didnt make the playoffs. This is just pathetic.
Okay, I know I’m hated around here (Lets go Mets!), but I’ll say this:
I think its 2 bad decisions in a row for the Braves, particularly regarding the team’s morale. First Smoltz, then Glavine? My boyfriend is a die-hard Braves fan (yes, its a house divided), and he’s upset too. I mean, I’m glad you guys got him back after his awful performance with the Mets (ugh, did you see his last game that he pitched for the Mets? Don’t remind me!); however, he’s a legend in Atlanta and he deserves to go with grace– not released in his last season. ESPECIALLY since his arm was getting better and he was ready to play! Lets not also forget the fact that he’s well respected in the Atlanta and Alpharetta community. I’m a disappointed Mets fan.
Efrim I don’t know what planet your from but mclouth is an awesome ceterfielder and schafer can’t hold his jock strap. It’s amazing how many people don’t have a clue just how good he is.he could be cj replacement in the three hole next year
The braves have not an any way given up on Schafer in the OF, and I think someone up at Gwinnett needs to make sure he knows that so it doesn’t follow him mentally. The Braves do not have a LF yet next year, so either Schafer or McClouth can take that spot next year. Whoever isn’t in left plays center. He might not be back in Atlanta this year, atleast not until september, but he will be back.
Hatchet Man is at it again! The shoddy treatment of veteran players is disgraceful. The Braves used to be a “class” organization. No more! Wren has to go!
When you called Hanson our second best prospect, it hit me how good our system is. A future ace is our 2nd best prospect…WOW. We kept Heyward, Hanson, Freeman, Schafer, and Medlen, our five best prospects(at least, IMO), and landed one of the best CFers in the game. And our system is still deep…with the draft coming up!
escobars bat, I disagree, on both fronts. But that’s my opinion. Overall it’s a good trade for the team, but I am not going to jump up and down and scream that this is making us the favorite in the NL East. Sorry. Just not doing it. But a good trade, yes, absolutely.
Joe talking about how Jeff’s patience got him that homerun last night, so what does “wonder boy” do tonight in a big spot? Swing at 3 of the 4 pitches he sees.
you didn’t fool me last night jeff. I won’t believe anything you do until you can consistently do it.
Bravesfanforever you have to remember Kelly is 5 times better down in the order. With batting McLouth leadoff you can drop Kelly 5th and Kelly can get the job done in the 5t or 6th spot. McLouth has expereince with the leadoff spot.
It’s a business and Wren is judged on the team’s performance. The moves made today reflect his business-like approach, as unclassy as you may claim them to be. Everyone loves Glavine for all he has done for Atlanta in his years. But is it smarter to save the money and go after an outfield bat, while Glavine can be replaced by someone who has a very bright future? I think it was a very wise move on Wren’s part. And let’s not forget Bobby supporting the moves as well. He has been through quite a bit with Glav, but this was about bringing October baseball back to ATL.
How have we given up on Schafer? If he learns how to shorten the swing, then great, and if we don’t need him, then he’ll be one helluva trade piece.
I think Wren & the scouts have learned their lesson on players with long swings. Frenchy, Schafer, Adam LaRoche, etc…Heyward & Freeman both have nice compact swings and aren’t pull happy.
It’s a matter of time when this organization starts producing good hitters, and fortunately it looks like they’re learning from their mistakes. Always a good thing.
I give FW an “F” for the way he handled the Glavine situation and a “B” for the McLouth trade. Now if he could only get the PTV games telecast on dish Network…
Don’t fret, maybe he’ll be right back in NY by this time next week? All I know is I only wanted him IF he was the best option we had in the 5th spot. If not, I have no problem with him being let go. This isn’t about emotions. It’s baseball. You don’t keep a guy just because he’s well liked, a face of the franchise, or even an icon in the community. You only keep a guy if he helps you win. That’s it.
TNScott, not only was his homer on a 2-1 pitch, but that “1″ was a fat grapefruit in the same place as the homer pitch, but he missed it like Stevie Wonder at a dart board.
“We kept Heyward, Hanson, Freeman, Schafer, and Medlen, our five best prospects(at least, IMO)”
I think we just traded our fifth and sixth best prospects…..kinda. I mean, I think Teheran is like 5. And whoever we draft in 6 days will be 6, or higher(If it isn’t Alex White).
Schafer and Hanson won’t be considered “prospects” next year, if that even matters.
Holy crap. I just heard someone now call McClouth “one of the best center fielders in the game.” Yesterday, nobody knows this guys name, today he’s one of the best. 3 days ago, Glavine was going to come back and “eat some innings’ and provide some “much needed quality starts.” Now that he’s done, he’s just a washed up guy that left us for the Mets a few seasons ago.
No wonder everybody routes against the Braves.

I heard the Braves are looking at Phil Neikro and Bedrosian to bring back for late season punch. They can both be had for a couple of mil each plus some bonus money.
Whatever Jeff had last night looks like he slept it off because I didn’t swing at pitches like that in little league, even with 2 K’s on me. IT ALMOST HIT HIM!
I was really disappointed in JS in CF. He could not go back on a ball over his head at all. It seemed like he always turned the wrong way on his initial break. He continually took the too shallow of an angle trying to cut of balls in the gap resulting in them rolling all the way to the wall. And he would chase fly balls over his head all the way to the wall and have them bounce past him back towards the infield.
I am not saying he can’t play, but he needs some instruction and is in the right place for him now. I think McLouth is the CF for the next 4 years and if Schafer is going to play it will have to be the corner outfield positions.

Mike, you can (lamely) knock the team’s class for today’s moves if you want to, but if you think adding Medlin to the pen, Hanson to the rotation, and McLouth to CF isn’t an improvement, well, find me a link to any sports analyst in the entire country who agrees with that. I’ll be waitin.
Mike….nobody knows his name because he doesn’t play for the Yankees or Red Sox. He is an All-Star outfielder and if you don’t know who he is, you’re not a true baseball fan.
A GREAT move by Wren. In fact, all of the oves were good today. One thing that could happen now is that Schafer becomes available. Perhaps a deal for Holliday provided we sign him. I don’t think Wren is done.
Mike, you don’t need to be a baseball junkie to know McLouth. Dude was an all-star last year, lead the league in doubles. Go root for the Mets if you’re so inclined or think the Braves made a bad move. You obviously lack any knowledge about the game.
Mike just because you dont follow baseball outside of Atlanta doesnt mean the rest of us are as ignorant as you. I know I knew who he was. Maybe thats why we all like the trade because we know how good McLouth is. If you didnt know who he is then you must not follow baseball.
Wow. Wow. Wow. Love the trade. And it should have absolutely no impact on Schafer’s role with the team. If he bounces back in AAA, he returns and McLouth moves to one of the corners.
The guy who should be sweating is Frenchy. If he doesn’t produce, and Schafer returns to the majors, McLouth slots into RF nicely.
About last night… Even Rick Camp could hit a home run in a key situation during the latest game (or earliest depending on how you look at it) in Braves history. One hit does not make a season or a career.
That at bat that Frenchy just had was horrible. It really reflects his current sad situation for the past 1 1/2 years.
I sure hope there is one more trade in the works so we can shore up RF and the lower part of the line up.

Mike, you don’t need to be a baseball junkie to know McLouth. Dude was an all-star last year, lead the league in doubles. Go root for the Mets if you’re so inclined or think the Braves made a bad move. You obviously lack any knowledge about the game.

Efrim, that’s a good point. Losing Locke sucks, but whomever we draft next week will step right into his spot (not White though, please not White).

McLouth should be here tomorrow, their game tonight was rained out, you’d think he’d be on a plane right now.

Mike just because you dont follow baseball outside of Atlanta doesnt mean the rest of us are as ignorant as you. I know I knew who he was. Maybe thats why we all like the trade because we know how good McLouth is. If you didnt know who he is then you must not follow baseball.

Where does McLouth stand on the issue of the Israeli’s building settlements on the West bank?

Wow. Wow.

Efrim,
After those five, I’d put Teheran and Rohrbough. Then I’d have those three guys mixed in with Spruill, DeVall, Delgado, Hoover, and Kimball.

In 2008, McLouth hit .273 with 17 homers and a .362 OBP in 326 at-bats from the leadoff position.
