The most HR’s Bream hit was 16 in 1986 in Pittsburgh. He hit 15 in 1990 in Pittsburgh and then…11 in 1991 and 10 in 1992 as a Brave.

I honestly do not understand how we can continue to compete when we have chipper hurt and already out and escobar out and then we sit Mccann because he needs a day off. When guys are hurt then other guys have to step it up. We have got to find some power or find a way to keep Mccann in the lineup.

So what? We have a catcher who is at the TOP of the league in Brian McCann, not many teams get the offense out of their catcher that we do. So isn’t it a wash?

Problem would be that I think Kotchman is one of the best defensive players on the team, so you would be taking some defense away from our already weak defensive team. Then on the upside, Ross might have more power than Kotchman, so by doing that, we might be gaining power, and finally, I have not checked on this one, but I think CK is a better OBP and BA guy than Ross, so you would be sacrificing that also….. But is a good point though, because Ross might be good enough to play every day and then we could bring sammons to back him up and use CK as trade bait, so CK and JF as part of a package might bring us a very very good bat back.

Nobody said Kotchman was the problem. That is some of these people just popping in and not knowing how the conversation started.
I said at the beginning that he was not a top of the line firstbaseman.
But he is performing and that is much more than can be said for 2 outfielders that I know of.

common sense: Somehow I just knew that Mike Piazza’s name would come up on the issue of catchers moving to first base. Out of a 14-year career, Piazza played 1 game at 1b for the Dodgers, 1 game in 2003, and 68 games in 2004. Even in 2004 you cannot say that he moved to 1B because he also played catcher in 50 games that year. Now, where’s the list that has MOST catchers moving to 1B?

We need two new outfielders. Period. End of discussion. Kotchman is better than Bream was, and we went to two WS with him at 1B. Pittsburgh made the playoffs with him at 1B.
Why? Because we/they had good pitching. And MONSTER production in the OF. By the way, those two teams had Tony Pena (and Spanky), along with Greg Olson as catchers. NONE OF WHICH are as good as McCann is at the plate.
Yup. Kotchman is the problem alright. Just keep telling yourself that.

Agreed, Kotchman does all the small things. Is he an all-star 1st baseman? The answer is no, but he does the small things that helps a team win.

Poppa Schlereth lost me when he made like Nancy Grace on the *alleged* video the Patriots of the Rams walkthrough before the Super Bowl and of the other video stuff they had. He’s probably looking for the guy on the grassy knoll, too. Anybody realize how short a football halftime is? There’s like five minutes, really, to do any strategy stuff. There’s five minutes of who’s injured and needs help, five minutes of bee-otching and then five minutes before you take the field again.
Unless you’re Erk Russell and you sneak out at halftime to watch the South Carolina State band perform.

Frank, we are so devoid of having home run power from ANY position we are in desperate need for the long ball from the two traditional spots — 1st base and left. But I think that it is better to wait for the big swings to grow from the farm than to trade good arms for expensive short-term fixes.

We are gonna have a logjam of starters when Glavine comes back…I actually rather would Go With Hansen and Medlen at the Back end of our Rotation and use Glavine in the Pen as short relief…
Or Maybe use Medlen or Hansen in Short Relief when Glavine comes back…

The question is why haven’t we seen any left-handed catcher’s mitts. And I don’t think there’s a good answer to the question. (PWH)
there are no left-handed catcher’s mitts cause there are basically no lefthanded catchers. Simple as that. There have been about a total of 30 LHers who have ever caught in a major league in 130+ years and only one back in the 1870 or so did it for any length of time. A few have caught several hundred games but most all of them have just filled in on a few emergency situations. Since you are such a baseball scholar and expert I’m kinda amazed that you would even bring up such a comment. .
There is a reason for that. It lessens the ability to throw out runners at second(which already is usually less than 40%) and it makes it almost impossible to throw out runners at third. Coaches know this fact even though you do not, so they do not use LHers as catchers in low level leagues. They won’t ever start either. Ergo no need for lefthanded catchers mitts.

Mark this down – by August Garret Anderson will be batting 290 – 300 with a few more HR’s added in. the guy is a proffesional hitter and will be glad he’s playing for the Braves.
If Frenchy and Schafer were hitting like Kotchman – this would be a completely different and a lot better team! Those 2 are a BIG hole in our line-up right now.
