8-Run Lead Before the off day
Get Chipper Out NOW!
I don’t want him to hurt his toe anymore that it is right now…
We are gonna need him to be close as healthy as possible for the cubs series
Steve from OH
Does anyone know of any good crow places that deliver in Ohio? I’m fixin’ to eat some…

where exactly did that hit kotch and how bad was it? i cant watch the game today or listen on radio
I’m telling you it’s an unfair world in baseball. A pitcher struggles and he can take it out on the next batter by plunking him. I think when a pitcher is kicking our ass, our hitters oughta be able to hurl their bats as hard as they can toward the pitchers mound. futhamukas!!!
So G. Anderson wee wees all over one (you seamheads will know the real dugout version of that cliche which I won’t use because this is supposed to be a PG blog) and Rafael Nadal gets beat at the French Open.
How will SportsCenter open the 11 p.m. show tonight? That’s a tough call between those two.
(OK, DOB, I’ll defer to your estimation of GA because you see him more closely and more often than we do).
May 31st, 20095:28 pm
Looked to me like Kotch got hit right above the ankle.
Dr. Jekyll, meet Mr. Hyde:
Garland: 2.2 IP, 9 R, 9 H, 3 BB
Scherzer: 3.2 IP, 8 R, 10 H, 3 BB, 1 HBP
Davis and Haren: 15 IP, 4 R, 14 H, 2 BB, 14 K
Dudes, it was a breaking ball. Probably not trying to hit him if it was offspeed.
Esmerling WTF were his mumma a daddy thinkin
I’m not equating a HBP with a car wreck, but I had a bruise right under my knee from a wreck and it hurt like hell to walk on it. Even though it was a regular bruise it hurt when I walked cause of the positioning of it. Let’s hope it was a bruise like that for Casey.
Rob you should learn the game before you make stupid comments
Matty-D Standing Up
Hitting is contageous…
I bet we wont score 8 runs the next 2 games…
Trade Francoer and start Diaz rest of the season imo.
May 31st, 20095:29 pm
Youse guyz is nutz. You don’t hit someone with a slider. The Snake just can’t pitch!
How to Fail
Completely agree. Stupid.
Garret Anderson continuing to heal that leg and to look like himself.
Paul Lentz Glavine was signed awhile ago so we’ve known for sometime he was going to pitch when healthy. As for the starting pitching not being a problem, the 5th spot can improve. Having a 300-game winner that knows how to pitch is not an awful thing.
Shafer = Loser.
Where are all the Francoeur haters now? Great Bench Coach.
May 31st, 20095:30 pm
It’s amazing. The whole team is killing the ball, but Schafer is still sucking the big one.
I love Diaz. He should be subbing in every day for one of our OFs.
It’s time for electric shock therapy for Schafer. Nothing else is working.
How to Fail
Anderson everyday in left, Diaz everyday in right until new bat acquired?
How bad’s Kotchman hurt? Anyone know?
If you get rid of Francouer and Schafer, this team will be better. I promise.
Virginia Ranger, we did blow a 7 run lead against the Phillies at the beginning of the season. This is an offensive ball park. It would be nice to see Medlen go 6 or 7 innings today. With tomorrow being an off day, if Medlen can go deep into the game, then the bullpen should be really rested for the Chicago series.
Nothing against Jodro K but does Bobby not see this. It can not be helping his confidence to whiff so much. How about trying to lay down a bunt or something
Tomahawkin, no one there to replace Chipper anymore now that Kotchman is done. Unless Diory can play some 3B or 1B.
Schafer seems to be regressing again. Disappointing.
Schafer the wiffer looks aweful…he’s not just striking out he looks terrible
May 31st, 20095:32 pm
Dawgfan – so give the short version of what you do to transform a team that has 5 players on track for hitting 16 HR’s and no one hitting more into a playoff club? A team that’s on track for a historic low in stolen bases! I will indulge you!
May 31st, 20095:33 pm
“Win at all costs”
Hopefully DOB didn’t cost Kotchman too many games
Schafer and his .794 “making an out average” need to be in AAA.
It’s Blanco time!
Paul Yeah I remember that debacle in Philly. You are on top of your came today and I agree about getting Medlen to go 6 or 7 for confidence etc.
TnBrian(standing in for PWHjort today)
See, THIS is what I’m talking about guys!! YAYYYY! See, if Garret can get his VORP,REGSE, and his WPJDNCVGEN up, he can be a stellar contributer to this team. It’s all a matter of metrics and physics if you want to look at it from a scientific point of view.
May 31st, 20095:34 pm
Doesn’t matter to me in least whether a pitcher tries to hit you or not. That matters not when it appears that Kotchman may wind up misses time. We should still be able to make their miss some time. Then maybe they’ll try just a little harder to keep the ball fro getting too far inside.
If we let Prado play first we don’t lose much at all … any maybe gain a few RBIs.
I hope Kotchman isn’t out for any long length of time. I hope it’s just a day or two off. That looked scary.
May 31st, 20095:35 pm
How about Frency Mustard at third.
Way to go Kris.
man, Medlen looks like a different guy today! I guess having an 8 run lead helps with the nerves
May 31st, 20095:36 pm
Medlen is dealing. Where are the Medlen haters now?
Medlen has retired nine in a row, including four strikeouts
They should play Norton at 1st. He needs the at bats to get going imo.
May 31st, 20095:37 pm
I don’t think Schafer should be playing in AAA. He isn’t good enough. He is simply overmatched.
Crash Davis: “I don’t believe in quantum physics when it comes to matters of the heart.”
But when it comes to matters of baseball analyis, more math and science is the only way to go.
Barring an injury to another starter, Glavine is going to be replacing Medlen.
May 31st, 20095:38 pm
KJ with 3 Doubles!
3 doubles in one game? Get it, KJ!
This is exactly what Medlen needs. Managed to get through 4 innings without incident and a big lead. He should impress the rest of the way unless Bobby pulls him after 5.
May 31st, 20095:39 pm
It’s good to see the kid get some runs and have a good taste in his mouth if this is his last start.
Today is one of Kelly’s good days, I fear what might come during the home stand
Hot KJ showed up today…when he is on, he really has one of the most beautiful swings
Looks like Bobby knew what he was doing putting KJ in leadoff spot
KJ Is heating Up, We need his Bat…
We can’t have our leadoff hitter post a .320 OBP that has to change!!
Been watching the game and decided to check on the lunacy on here.
KJ and Medlin are hotter than hot. Esco 2.
And another double for Yunel!?!?
If we let Prado play first we don’t lose much at all. – Braves Paisan
No, except Gold Glove-caliber defense. Which you’d swap for barely serviceable defense. If that’s not much at all, then you’re right. Prado is not good at all defensively at 1B.
Braves “How To Win on the Road” Guide
- score 4 or more runs. All 5 losses on this trip came when the braves scored 3 or fewer.
Okay. I was wrong. He is heating up. He can be really, really good.
May 31st, 20095:40 pm
This would be a different team if KJ and Loaf got it going and lifted their averages about 30 points—and it is possible that they can do that.
Kelly Johnson and Yunel Escobar
We’re having a contest to see who can hit the most doubles today.
From today’s Globe, notes from Nick Cafardo (the tradition started by Peter Gammons and carried on faithfully and well by Gordon Edes. Cafardo’s OK, but he’s not in Edes’ class. Few are.) —
Managerial ranks, with current rank first and previous in parentheses. Rankings based on interviews with front office and field personnel throughout the majors:
4. Bobby Cox, Braves: Probably the most respected manager in the game by his players. A fundamentally sound skipper (2).
David Ortiz on Terry Francona (who is No. 2 in the survey): “Francona is unbelievable. He might be the best handler of players I’ve ever seen. He gives you confidence. He’s the best. He’ll have a young kid here from the minors and before he sends him back he sits with him and he explains everything the kid needs to do, man. When they come back, they come back strong. That’s because of him.”
And lastly, an item on the blog denizens’ favorite whipping boy of late: One thing that makes sense about Boston scouting the struggling Francoeur is that he’s a big Red Sox fan (he used to carry a Red Sox Mastercard until his Braves teammates made him get rid of it). Francoeur has struggled for two seasons now, so we’re not sure there’s real interest. “That’s news to me,” said a Sox official. The Sox have to be concerned about Rocco Baldelli’s channelopathy, which causes fatigue in his legs.
And looks like KJ is ready to embark on one of those notorious hot streaks because he is ripping … um, well, you know, uh, fun bags.
looks like we might need Diroy to play 3rd now. Mr. Injury doesn’t need to be in if he has anything going on.
That is some top of the order today.
May 31st, 20095:42 pm
days like today are infuriating, because it shows how good our offense could be, but how infuriatingly inconsistent they are instead.
i’m enjoying the offensive flourish while it lasts though.
So if Prado stinks at 1B, does that mean Norton is even worse there? Why not a little Norty action at first? That’ll get him an AB or two as well, which he could probably use. Prado’s not exactly Roberto Clemente at the plate right now, either.
I HAVE YET TO SEE GOLD GLOVE CALIBER DEFENSE FROM KOTCHMAN????
HE IS MARGINAL AT BEST. ON OUR LONG LIST OF FIRST BASEMANS HE IS NO WHERE NEAR THE TOP.
May 31st, 20095:43 pm
Six doubles from the 1-2 Braves hitters … in five innings.
New All Star game contest “Double Derby”
Of course you are right DOB about first base defense, totally underrated. My Yankee fan mates in NY are talking about how good Teixiera is on the bag. But my boy Prado can hit — and, more importantly, hit big time in tough situations.
That clears something up, mcCann has a pair of glassess specifically for catching now
May 31st, 20095:44 pm
Ok, Bobby better take Chipper out now and let him rest his foot a little. I guess Norton is available to play first, and move Prado to third.
Maybe we can bring in Bennett to hit a D’back. I’m sure he could if given 2 or 3 chances.
KJ is 13 for 36 in his last 8 games. 7 RBI 12 runs scored.
May 31st, 20095:45 pm
Kotchman has ZERO errors as a Brave I believe.
It is dry out in Arizona and Nevada. I remember when I had to work in Nevada for a few weeks and I thought this is great for running. Warm but dry. Amazing how easily you can become dehydrated, so Chipper and his nose bleed and Mac and fog free glasses is more clearly understood. But at the same time, I thought the Bob was closed today and air conditioned.
May 31st, 20095:46 pm
I can’t really figure it out but I have noticed fewer and fewer GA critics. keylargo
I said it early in the game and GA has made a nice catch going back, coming in and has a HR.
GA and Diaz have LF covered. Send Schafer down, to work on hitting and defense and hope he makes enough progress to come back later. Blanco will fill in until help arrives. Continue to look for a power bat for CF or RF. JF has to be on the trading block in return for an outfielder.
KJ three doubles. Where are the KJ haters?
MP batting average below KJ.
Rookie Medlin will get the win.
Glavine will be back in a week or two.
All things considered, I would say the Negative Nellies are drinking with that MF guy somewhere whining like hell that all the things they love to cry about are turning around.
SOMEBODY HAS LOST THEIR MIND IF THEY THINK KOTCHMAN HAS HAD NO ERRORS AS A BRAVE??????
You are an idiot. Kotchman is one of the better first basemen around. He has not made an error as a Brave! Think before you speak!
May 31st, 20095:47 pm
You are correct about Kotchman not making an error as a Brave- not only that, he’s only made 8 his entire big league career…not bad
May 31st, 20095:48 pm
Kotchman plays first as well as anybody in basaball. Fact! Anyobdy who says otherwise does not watch much baseball.
Before we get into a Prado lovefest, he’s 9 for his last 46 (.196) with an OPS of .615 this month.
First base is a power/RBI position, like left field. Am I missing something?
Braves fan in germany
May 31st, 20095:49 pm
Kotchman has no errors for the braves this year
GA’s stats surely point that out. His average is steadily climbing. Hopefully, he’ll be the player the BRAVES thought they signed soon.
I like ironic screen names (and I’m not necessarily referring to someone with the same name as an old John Prine album).
Can you be scrappy AND great?….Pete Rose sez, “I’ll bet… you can be both” !!
Kotchman does indeed have zero errors in both 2009 and 2008 with the Atlanta Braves.
I may not know much but I know anyone who thinks Kotch can’t field doesn’t watch much baseball!!
May 31st, 20095:50 pm
The Kid is pitching GREAT !
this braves game is killing my fantasy baseball team. i will always trade a fantasy loss for a braves win though.
ANDY… OK YOU ARE RIGHT ON THE ERROR THING. BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN HE IS ALL THAT. I HAVE PERSONALLY SEEN HIM MAKE SOME PRETTY BAD PLAYS THAT HE DIDNT GET CHARGED AN ERROR FOR. HE IS NOT THAT GOOD A HITTER AND HAS NO POWER EITHER. WE HAVE HAD SOME GOOD FIRST BASEMANS IN THE PAST BUT HE IS NOTHING MORE THAN MARGINAL.
Frank from KS
Tex hit another bomb today for the Yanks…altho Cleveland came back and won after the Yanks tied it.
We gotta get rid of the “Medlin”/”Medlan” bum!! LOL
May 31st, 20095:51 pm
I have played ball my whole life and half watched the braves since i was old enough to breath. Kotchman is NOT an all star first baseman. We have had many many better.
May 31st, 20095:52 pm
Common sense: You are outta your mind. Kotchman is simply great at first base.
Chop Chop: I’ll agree that Glavine will replace Medlin, but the timing will definitely suck because Medlin sure looks like he’s turned the corner today. But, all in all, Medlin should be a huge boost to our less-than-stellar bullpen.
Kotchman’s last 2 errors were for the Angels in 2008.
May 31st, 20095:53 pm
Medlen = Dealin.
“Nobody “filled in” for Berra or Bench after a night game. Mac is what 25 years old?”
They didn’t play many night games at that time, and both of them got days off…uninformed one. (I didn’t want to say stupid.)
Can't Buy A Thrill
Medlen is looking good today!
