PI Braves, it’s 35 pitches in 2 inning…not 56 pitches. You might want to learn how to read the box score. 35-21 in the box score under pitch count means 35 pitches thrown, 21 strikes thrown……which means 14 balls thrown.
When you consider Gonzo has thrown three innings in two days and Soriano has pitched an inning in both the last two games, every run that Braves score will be that much more important. Hopefully, Medlen continues to improve the pitch management and we can give the two steadiest guys in the pen a day of rest and the team a giant boost before the flight home.
well gametracker showed that last pitch outside at least… i really feel like jordan is on the rigth track lately he at least seems to be making SOME contact with the ball
I have reading box scores for the Braves since 1954 – no bigger fan exits, and, at the risk of stirring the blog up, I have to say that those who think the Braves can make a play-off run by the addition of “a big bat” (I choked at the word “another”!) are smoking something that’ll get ‘em in trouble. Ain’t happenen’, folks – ain’t happenin’ with this team, and the addition of a big bat -even if Huddy comes back strong in August. Love this team – it doesn’t suck! It has very good pitching, and that with the addition of Huddie in the rotation giving strong performances- it would have the best staff in the league. That staff would be backed by stong 8th/9th inning guys, but poor 4-5 and middle relief. That staff would be supported by the “new big bat”, and nobody else within striking distance of 25 hr’s, and only 1 or 2 with a strong chance to reach 20. That staff would be supported by an average defensive team, with abysmal speed on the base paths.
No rentals please, no ’saviour’ acquisition’s eithier. Stay the course with your very solid infield of Johnson and Escobar. Await the return of Omar Infante who has skill and versatility. Say adieu to Garett Andeson (notice the absence of criticism of FW over his aquisition – it looked very good on paper!).
Hold on to Francoeur – just lower your expectations. Prado and Diaz are solid, no power, no speed guys. Be patient with Shafer – you brung ‘im to the dance, so take him home. He is not the face of this franchise “going forward” as that hackneyed saying goes. Chipper stays, but he’s not the anchor of the team, just its spiritual leader.
The team needs retooling the coming off-season. It is mediocre now, but with the return of Huddy, Infante, Glavine, and with any improvement in the other bats in the lineup, can claw its way to 88 wins. Otherwise – I assess that this year’s mediocre team (which I love!) is going to hover within three games either side of .500. (The addition a “big bat” brings us up to 86 wins – max. I would not go this route, there is a downside for doing this – but that’s for another day.)
Sorry for the pessimism, but the numbers don’t work to support optimism – for this season. I wanna be wrong, wrong, wrong in my view, but I can’t shake it – we’ve got some scary, poor, numbers working against us.
Rodney Derrick: I’ll check with McCann, but I think he’s only been wearing them here in Arizona. I know he wasn’t wearing them in S.F. the night a couple of pitches got past that he blamed on himself, because I asked him that night if it was anything to do with his eyes (he wasn’t playing with the glasses) and he said it wasn’t.
He could wear them here in Arizona without any fear of fogging — nothing fogs in this hot, dry air.
I’m starting to think Garret Anderson might really have struggled early, at least in part, because of missing so much of spring training and April. I say that because he’s sure looked better lately, hitting a lot of balls hard in this series, and now that catch….
cabravesfan – I have been listening, so I haven’t missed anything except the fellowship here, so perhaps that exempts me from blame in a worst case scenario.
BTW, McFann, on the radio Don Sutton said that McCann was very feisty in the clubhouse before the gme.
Boston Globe reports that the Astros would trade Miguel Tejada for a pitching prospect. Can he play 2B? Maybe worth some speculation of sending Kelly Johnson back to the OF and Acquiring Tejada (other option could be to have Yunel at 2B, even though he is obviously a great SS). His stats have been good, and add in an extra prospect and I bet the Braves could get Houston to eat some salary.
Grace and Sutton explaining that the 6′5 Garret Anderson is smooth and graceful and that gives some the wrong perception. They must have taken a peek at this blog.

To all those out there that are willing to trade, Medlen and Morton for a rest of the season rental like Derosa and others. Medlen and Morton are 23 and 25 years old and both have the stuff to be a quality starter or better. A trade for an outfielder like Hawpe, who has a proven track of some sucess at the major league level and is under team control for a couple of more years, might make sense. Derosa might be worth a couple of lower level prospects or reyes and a lower level prospect, but not Medlen and Morton that have been dominant at AAA!
Bravesfan54, Glavine is way past his prime. I will be sorely disappointed to see Glavine added to the roster. He isnt worth the potential $3.5 the Braves would have to pay him if he stays on the roster for the rest of the year.
Also, If Hudson comes back in August, I would suggest the Braves use him as a closer. I mean realistically, how many innings do you really think Hudson can go coming off elbow surgery? Make him the closer, have Soriano and Gonzalez alternate being 7th and 8th inning guys. That would really make the bullpen solid. Hudson has the mentality to close in pressure situations. Next year, he can go back to starting. He’ll have a full off season to get build his arm strength up.
Another nice inning for Medlen. I’d keep throwing Medlen out there every 5th day. Lowe, Jurrgens, and Vazquez looks to be solid for the rest of the year. If Kawakami continues to struggle, I would bring up either Tommy Hanson or Charlie Morton (if the Braves are worried about his arbitration clock ticking). But not Glavine. I want to see the Braves win.
Roja, I’d be willing to bet that the prospect they are looking for will be something more along the lines of Morton, though it could be someone as far away as Spruill or Devall. Bennett might be the guy to get the salary eaten.
Bravesfan54, Glavine is way past his prime. I will be sorely disappointed to see Glavine added to the roster. He isnt worth the potential $3.5 the Braves would have to pay him if he stays on the roster for the rest of the year.
How about we let him start a few games and then see if he’s isn’t worth the money? See how he does and then go from there? He’s signed already and he’s going to pitch.
Kirkinga, the Braves problem isnt starting pitching. It’s hitting home runs and driving in runs. I would rather the Braves spend their limited payroll dollars on acquiring a right handed power bat. Paying Glavine those precious millions does nothing to solve the lack of right handed power.
Given what D Lowe did for Medlen on his first start, and listening to some of the things Hudson said about him on the Fox broadcast yesterday, it appears he’s a pretty good teammate. Wonder if he still loves the nightlife as much as it was claimed he did in his previous stops.
So far, in 12 plate appearances, the first four hitters in the Braves lineup are 7-for-9 with five runs and five RBIs and have reached base in 10 of 12 PAs.
And Loaf just drilled one. Will wonders never cease.
Garrett has been swinging a good bat lately. And now his first homer as a Brave. He jacked that one. Take note Franceour. That is how you “turn” on a pitch.
Clutch. But may be the start of something. Medlen looks safe today for no loss. I do not believe we have blown an 8 run lead yet this year. And with the improvement this year I think it is time for Dandy Don to sing.
Braves Fan 54 I do respect your opinion hell you hve been watching the Braves since I was 1. Were the Braves in Boston then?
Scherzer has CRAZY movement on his slider and sinker. That one pitch nearly hit Escobar, and he swung. And the one that hit Kotchman, no way he could even get out of the way.
I hope that Bobby keeps this line-up for Tuesday (assuming that pitch didnt break Kotchman’s kneecap) against the Cubs. They have a righthander on the mound. Just dont put Franceour out there. If Kotchman cant go, put Prado in there.

Alright, the GA bashing is officially done. He’s made up for any “loafing” he’s done since being with us by his play today…almost.
