I’m making my first trip to Atlanta for the Brewers series this weekend and was looking for some tips on places to eat, things to see, where to get autographs….etc.
I saw some good places to eat on Man vs. Food the other night (Chicken & Waffles, Vortex, Big Pie in the Sky), but my options are still pretty open at this point.
Finally caught up on the last season of The Shield. How friggin’ depressing, but the show couldn’t have ended any other way. Don’t know if any show has ever made me feel as heart broken as I did when Lem met his fate, but when Shane and his family met theirs, it got pretty close. I remember talking to my brother about how it would all end back about six years ago during season one. Glad to finally see a show have the balls to end it the right way …. although the Vic Mackey ending was a bit contrived ….. but nevertheless poetically just in many ways
Did Bobby Cox really say: “I would hope that a wise old man from Oklahoma, who never was a very good major leaguer, with the richness of his experiences would more often than not make better managing decisions than someone who hasn’t lived that life”?
Brewers GM says that any trade talks involving Corey Hart is “pure nonsense”…like this guy is SOOOO the next Hank Aaron. First of all, he ain’t that good, and plus he looks like count dracula. That was mean, but some people give me the jeepers.
Wanted some feedback here…. If Bravos do trade for DE RO where the hell we gonna play him? I know everywhere/anywhere but there has to be some plan? Move K.J. back to outfield(center?) De Ro to 2nd?( And fill in whenever HOSS is Hurt? Thoughts?
I just dropped in to say hi. “HI”. Can’t stay, unfortunately. A special “hug” to some of you out there (you know who you are!). I’ve always liked the “Dave Matthews’ Band”, but never got into them like I’m hearing them now ( I stopped buying CD’s and stuff, a long time ago). XM Radio is playing them, 24/7, for the entire week. In addition to my “Bose Acoustic Wave System” (which is usually enough sound), and my wall Bose speakers (I add to the sound, occasionally), I’ve fired up my 4 floor speakers, which usually serve as end tables. My house is located in a place that high volume only bothers me or animals. (The animals used to call the cops when the volume was too high, but once I cut their phone line, they can’t complain. I cut it in two places. It’ll take them a while to catch on.)
LA Woman, I can’t hang around, but I’ll see your reply later, have you finally got paid?
Hasn’t tonight been one of the worst sports nights of the year?
It’s bad enough that we have no NBA until Thursday; but, the Braves aren’t playing, and the NHL (which I usually don’t watch, but would, considering the circumstances) felt the need to force both games to the week-end, leaving tonight a dead sports night.
Dude I would guess one of the corner outfield spots. Also maybe all the positions, he may play a different position just about every day. However, considering AJC put it on their website I would guess it wont happen so no need to really talk about it.

Vazquez and Kelly would fill the needs of the Brewers, a quality starter and a replacement for Richie Weeks. The Braves needs of more power would be filled. Hardy would play shortstop with Yunel moving back to 2nd base for now (like he did when Renteria was here). Gamel, who can play 3rd and the outfield, could play 3rd until Chipper can get his foot problem healed and when Chipper returns he could move to rightfield if Francoeur isn’t markedly better. Gamel, in his first extended major league stay, would give us a righthanded power bat for the future to team with the Lefty bats of Heyward, Freeman and Cody Johnson. Morton would be a young potential starter with 5 years service time left to develop into a quality SP. Hardy wouldn’ t be missed because the Brewers have Alcides Escobar( the top rated SS in the minors) waiting at AAA. To recap Brewers get a No.2 quality starting pitcher, a comparable replacement for Weeks and a potential future starting pitcher and have a replacement for Hardy at hand. Braves get a temporary replacement for Chipper and a future right handed power OF bat/or a future 3B bat and Hardy basically replaces Kelly bat at 2nd and is an upgrade defensively on the infield.
I voted 25 times, the max, for Chipper and McCann. I did my part and whether or not that’s enough, we just don’t know.TNBrian
I believe you can delete cookies and vote again. But that could be unfair because Jason Kendall and his incredible stats are far more deserving than McCann…
Would you consider The Varsity to be similar to Sonic?
The Varsity is a place that every person who comes to Atlanta must go to once. It has hot-dogs and hamburgers and everything…I mean everything is covered in grease.
Steve Phillips said tonight during the Yanks/Indians game that the Braves were going to draft in the upcoming baseball draft an OF from Georgia University by the name of Donavon Tate (I think that’s what his name was).
Just out of curiousity….anyone know anything about him?
brent a.–
I’m glad I came around in time to adjust your attitude, before you retired for the night.
Mixxo–
I think that a good percentage of the bloggers don’t go back far enough, or don’t remember. All they know is winning. Go back, people! All there was, was losing!
Not a fan of the Varsity except for those frosted oranges. If I could eat in one place in the Atl area on a visit I’d probably go with the Brick Store on the Decatur Square. HUGE beer selection and really good food. However, it does get packed on weekend nights, so if you don’t get there early be prepared to wait. I also enjoy the Chicken & Waffles and the Vortex, but Brick Store is my fave.
Regardless Stevo, I’ve NEVER meant to use it in a disrespectful way…..ever…. on this blog or anywhere else in life…..ever. If it rubs folks the wrong way, well I’m truly sorry. I honestly had no idea it was akin to calling somebody a “jerk” or whatever. Honestly! Since when has it been a derogatory term? Please, clue me in. I’ll quit using it….then.
Contrary to “popular belief,” I’m not here to pi$$ anybody off, believe me. I love my Braves and sports in general. I hereby officially apologize to DOB & anyone else I may have offended with my past rants. I’m just a passionate guy who’ll speak up in the heat of the moment and defend my position if I deem necessary. Cool?
Comparing KJ to Thorman or Lillibridge, really? That’s laughable. When I said potentially great it wasn’t something I made up. It’s what Boog said that oppposing players say about Kelly,(that guy can hit) it’s what peope like Mark Grace say about him, and others, have you never watched the games when he’s on a tear? During those days when he is on a roll he is a great hitter. It’s the inconsistency that keeps him from being right up there with the elite hitters. That’s the potential I was talking about, sorry you can’t see it. When did a Thorman or a Lillibridge ever go on a tear like KJ can get on? I’ve never seen it and I watch all the games. Not basing his potential on minor league stats or spring training but with a fairly extensive big league playing time. Can’t say that about Schafer or Morton or most of the players you named.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. It looks like I’ll definitely have to check out The Varsity and Daddy Dz bbq joint, but really all I’m looking forward to is a Braves sweep!
If I didn’t know any better, I’d say that your comments about The Varsity lead me to believe that there are a bunch of well-known movies that you haven’t seen before.
Eric in WV– you MUST go to The Varsity when u come to ATL if your 1st time visitors. Great hot dogs, fries, hamburgers, peach pies, and the frosted orange. It is Atlanta! I think they only have them in GA. and we only have 5-6 total in metro ATL area and Athens GA home of Georgia bulldogs. The downtown Varsity serves the Georgia Tech campus(across the street(interstate 75))and of course the entire city.
People on here saying greasy r just tools.
It is great for families, guys & gals all ages. Its as big an attraction as the BRAVOS themselves. They prob have web site 4 u to check. Enjoy the ATL.
Since when does Milwaukee have a huge voting contingent for the all star game? Or is there some huge Jason Kendall fan club that I am missing? I’m not sure which would be more embarrassing for MLB, Manny or Kendall getting voted in to the All Star Game.
“The Varsity is a place that every person who comes to Atlanta must go to once. It has hot-dogs and hamburgers and everything…I mean everything is covered in grease.”Roman Gal
I’ve flown to Atlanta, on numerous occasions, to see games. However, after reading this post of yours, I’m itching to hop a Delta right now. To hell with the Braves. Just give me directions to the “Varsity”.
For any of you living on the southside of Atlanta I found a great new burger spot. Its a hole in the wall off of Flat Shoals road called Mike and Bridgets home town Bistro. They have a one pound double cheese burger that comes with fries for 6.50. Best burger iv had in a while. Its a bbq place but the burger is all i have tried so far. First time i couldnt finish a burger in years.
If I didn’t know any better, I’d say that your comments about The Varsity lead me to believe that there are a bunch of well-known movies that you haven’t seen before.
Alright you fantasy baseball fans, I got a question for you:
Let’s say that the closers on your team are Frank Francisco and Joe Nathan. Your SPs are Liriano, Felix Hernandez, Kevin Slowey, Scott Baker, and David Price. It’s a rotisserie league, and you’re tops in nearly all the offensive categories, but in the bottom three (out of 11) in pitching. At any time, you have 5 offensive players on the bench, giving you 14 offensive players — at least 2 of whom are very expendable (one of Wieters/Molina as catcher, and Asdrubal Cabrera b/c you have Ian Kinsler as 2B and Hanley Ramirez as SS).
Now, the question: would you drop Frank Francisco for Anthony Swarzak? (For those of you who don’t know — and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’d be many of you — Swarzak is a rookie on the Twins who has made 2 starts and given up 3 runs in 13 innings, a 2.08 ERA, 6 Ks and 6 BBs, and a 1.23 WHIP.) I’m guessing your answer would be no. But not if you were the guy in my fantasy league who did so recently, allowing me to cash in on his fantasy baseball managing savvy.
To hell with the Braves. Just give me directions to the “Varsity”.Tom O’Hawke
Hah! Well, if you’re coming from the southside, you’ll need to get on I-75 north and…oh, wait…I’m sorry, Tom. I’m saving you from yourself. I won’t give you directions to the artery clogger. You’ll thank me later.
People who bitch about grease only eat tofu.
Scrue tofu.
Just askin …. Is Ryan Braun or whatever his name in MILWAKee… considered untouchable for trade? What about pitchers & Schafer for him ?
Dude, come on! No way you’re going to convince me that the Varsity isn’t the greasiest place you’ve ever eaten…or at least one of them! I’m not saying it’s bad, just greasy.
KJ’s stats compare favorably with Ryne Sandberg’s career stats as far as BA-OBP-Slugging-and OPS+. That said, Sandberg really didn’t start putting up his big HR totals until he turned 28 when they basically doubled. KJ is 28 or will be this year I believe. Interesting what the future “could” hold.
Chris From the Rock: Hardy is considered an excellent defensive shortstop and has averaged 25 Home Runs the last two seasons. He would be tradebait( Red Sox? He might hit 35 home runs in Beantown)) after Infante returns and is ready to Resume playing 2nd>
CSG: I’m gonna guess that Blanco simply had a needed day off. He played 28 games in May (team couldn’t have played more than 28 or 29 in May) and his “last 10 days” entry shows that he started at least the last 10 games (in a 10-day span).
He was 3-for-13 in his last three games since a four-hit game.
Just out of curiousity….anyone know anything about him (FRANK KS)
he is a very toolsy guy who has some real issues as a hitter. Lots of upside, but definitely a project. He also is a Boras client I think and he has the leverage of a football contract to a college already in hand which will likely make him pretty expensive to sign, not good in this economy.
. I think it is pretty unlikely that the Braves will draft him, I certainly hope that they do not. We have had enough Francoeurs(who was a better hitter when drafted) Lombards etc already fail to learn the skills necessary to maximize their tools. I’m betting on a pitcher. We’ll see soon.
Roman Gal- Grease is the Word! Grease makes the world go round. Greased Lightning is frickin great cleaner. Not suggesting u hook ur IVee up at Varsity………however,… alful waffle open late and they have in West VAginny!
Hey, Roman Gal, (”Tom. I’m saving you from yourself. I won’t give you directions to the artery clogger. You’ll thank me later.”)
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that. I thought for sure that this place gave out angioplasty balloons, upon exit (like after dinner mints). You’ve saved me plane fare and possibly, a few years of my life. I can’t believe the people that say this blog is useless.
Spealin of grease has anyone been grease-less 4 a few days and then had a Krispy Kreme doughnut? You have to take a towel and wipe out your mouth with that LARD.
I like lard betteren grease.
P.S. frankie wren better lard up the phone lines to help Bravos thru usual JUNE SWOON.
Damn, would be sweet for Crime Dog big bat(2009 version)…uh minus the stadium burning.
Hopefully a nice little winning streak will absolve any bad juju those insensitive ramblings of mine precipitated. I’m doing all I can do on my end to put it in the past.
Chop Chop my dream is to have food delivery service nationwide between midnight and 4am.
course all the drivers would be shot dead by end of first month.
From what I’ve seen, at least with his last few posts, I think you people, that are trying to lose a few pounds, should copy the “dude’s” posts. Paste them in your notebook, and then read them whenever you get an appetite. Man, if that doesn’t deter your appetite, what would?
“Grease,” said the poster and the Barry Gibb song, “is the word.” Transferring its setting from Chicago to sunny California, and adding a dash of disco to the ersatz ’50s score, producer Allan Carr and director Randal Kleiser turned this long-running Jim Jacobs – Warren Casey Broadway smash into the biggest blockbuster of 1978. 1950s teens Danny (John Travolta) and Australian transfer Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) spend their “Summer Nights” falling in love, but once fall comes, it’s back to Rydell High and its cliques. As one of the bad boy T-Birds, Danny has to act cool for best pal Kenickie (Jeff Conaway) and their leather-clad mates Sonny (Michael Tucci) and Doody (Barry Pearl, in the role Travolta played on stage). Despite befriending Frenchy (Didi Conn), one of the rebel Pink Ladies, virginal Sandy is “too pure to be Pink,” as the Ladies’ leader Rizzo (Stockard Channing) acidly observes. Declaring their devotion in such ballads as “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and “Sandy,” Sandy and Danny split, reconcile, and split again amidst a pep rally, dances, drive-ins, and a drag race, before deciding “You’re the One That I Want” at the climactic carnival. With Travolta white-hot from Saturday Night Fever (1977), Grease soundtrack singles climbed the charts and summer movie crowds poured in. With the presence of Joan Blondell, Eve Arden, Sid Caesar, Edd \”Kookie\” Byrnes and Frankie Avalon appealing to grown-up memories, Grease became the highest grossing film of 1978, the highest grossing movie musical ever, and the third most popular film of the new blockbuster ’70s after Star Wars (1977) and Jaws (1975). Its sequel, Grease 2, did not exactly set the world on fire in 1982. -AllMovie.com
DOB remembered Nelson Cruz. So keep this name in mind.
Luis Durango. They call him the “Panamaniac”
He’s Otis Nixon cloned. Switch hitter, fastest player in the entire Padres organization, lead off hitter, outfielder, good defender with great range and a solid arm. His numbers so far in parts of four minor league seasons are just dominant. It’s not the .347 BA or .427 OBP that got my attention. It’s the 142 walks versus 123 K’s. That tells me three things. Complete hitter. Plate discipline. Big Leaguer.
You mentioned something about renting all the “Star Wars” movies. I’m about 36 hours behind in scanning the posts. Not to make you repeat yourself, but did you see any of them yet?
My romantic movie recommendation was “Casablanca”, which was backed up by nolie. I think nolie might agree with my second one. After you’ve seen “Casablanca”, check out one of my favorite comedies. Woody Allen’s, “Play It Again, Sam”, would be a great watch after the other. The latter is a parody of the former.
