ERA with RISP is a goofy statistic. Is 9.45 bad? I picked one well known pitcher as a comparison: Tim Lincecum’s ERA with RISP is 10.69. I decided to do two more: Jake Peavy is at 15.60 and Johan Santana is at 3.31.
Just like how Kotchman is a douche and how stupid it was of Bobby to leave Garret in LF, where he has played 15 years, but to take Matt out of CF, where he has played one game.
I agree with you in theory but that means in this case that Schafer will have to play in all 162 games. That is very unlikely. He has already played through a wrist injury that may have contributed to his poor hitting. Maybe, maybe not. The point is that if you have competent backup players for each position you can sit a guy when he is struggling/banged up/tired like Schafer has been at some point this season.
RHR — he should have moved Diaz to LF and put Schafer in CF. And did you actually watch Kotchman? He took 2 steps to go to first, then said screw it, stopped, got tagged out, then sprinted as fast as he could to first base to start the next inning. Just looked really stupid on his part, mine as well sprint and make the catcher throw. Don’t wait, then sprint.
Don’t sweat it Chief. It’s just typical “thug” behavior from his kind. I guess he thought he’d show up Javy with that big bad walk. They can keep that thug crap in the NFL & NBA as far as I’m concerned. (MIXXO)
Andy C: It certainly doesn’t mean that Schafer will play all 162 games. If the D-backs lead 3-0 or the Braves lead 8-1, then Diaz could still be in CF. The defensive switch makes sense in close games where you have a lead. That condition fails to hold in lots of games. How hard is it to think both about long-term strategy (giving Schafer a start off) and the in-game strategy of getting good defense to protect a late inning lead?
Wonder how much of his signing bonus Ryan Roberts spent on tattoos. Dude looks like he’s gotta lotta ink.
Six damn good innings from Vazquez. Hopefully O’Flaherty can stop it right here and the Braves can take advantage of that sorry Zona bullpen — good thing a couple of the guys who can come off the bench as pinch hitters are Chipper and B-Mac.
Yeah, It’s Bobby’s fault for not taking out our workhorse starter when he’s under 100 pitches and has only given up 1 run. Clearly a horrible decision…….
A lot of offspeed stuff by Javy when he was behind on the count. Unfortunately the Diamondbacks figured it out and tied this game up. It’s a shame because he really pitched a beauty today. Hopefully Braves bats can get something going.
Rob, how was it so clear that Vazquez was done after the 6th inning? He struck out his last two batters. I’d agree with you if both guys lined out or something to that effect, but he mowed Drew and Reynolds down.
PWHjort – Bobby has to realize that he got in a jam last inning, and was bound to get into another jam the next inning. Usually happens that way. Now instead of it being 2-0, it’s 2-2.
Yes, it is possible that you rest Schafer and there is a blowout but I would argue that even if it was 3-0 either way Bobby would bring in Schafer because he would consider that close enough. Anyway, my final and ultimate point is that the Braves need a better backup centerfielder.
