Kotchman the only perfectly healthy member left standing in the infield. All others limping and/or recovering from strains and sprains.

Man, I didn’t think much of it at the time and all throughout spring training I thought Boone Logan would be our guy, didn’t really think O’Flaherty stood a chance of winning the job, and I didn’t really agree with the decision at the time, but Eric O’Flaherty was one heck of a waiver claim. “Francoeur almost always swings at the first pitch because he’s a career .345 hitter on the first pitch.” chop chop

He has put the ball in play 452 times on the first pitch. In the other 1879 AB’s after taking a strike, taking a ball, or fouling off the 1st pitch, he’s a .248 career hitter.

So you’re right. The scary thought is why on earth ANYBODY would throw him a strike on the first pitch… EVER!

Considering that even after being ahead in the count 1-0, he’s only a .279 career hitter, with only 22 HR. After being ahead 2-0 his average actually goes down to 2-0.

So it baffles me why anybody would throw a strike on the first two pitches. Like most hitters, his average severely dips after being down 0-1, to .225.

If I’m an opposing pitcher. I throw him a tough breaking pitch or jam him with a fastball on the first pitch EVERY time. But to throw him a “get over” pitch for strike one is about the dumbest thing a pitcher can do, IMO.

Chipper Jones on the other hand, is a career .274 hitter after an 0-1 count. He’s a .319 hitter after having a 1-0 count.

It seems on the first pitch, or when he’s ahead in the count, Jeff STILL isn’t very selective.

Maybe we don’t have the bullpen strength to win using 5 pitchers EVERY time, but when our offense puts us in the position and our starters can’t go the distance, our bullpen is good enough to secure the lead most of the time. And they’re not going to have to every game. But it’s nice knowing they can.

Hopper knew that he was going to die because he wasnt about to sell out his son. Knowing that he was going to die, Hopper figured that he would go out “swinging”. His way of going out swinging was to insult Sicilian people in a way that Walken’s character would never forget. Tell a Sicilian gangster that his “great, great, great, great, great grandmother fcuked a ni__er….that he has black blood pumping through his veins” (Hopper had earlier said that the Moors conquered Sicily centuries ago, and that they “did so much fcuking to Sicilian women, that they changed the whole bloodline forever”… (PAUL)

it wasn’t about “going out swinging” it was about insulting him & his family’s history so badly (you’re right about the racist part) that he would lose his cool and kill him quickly in a moment of passion, rather than torture him for the info which Hopper’s character knew he would not be able to withstand. Like the black-ops guys say, “everybody talks”

6′3″ 200, right-hander, 23 years old April 14. Fourth round pick in 2007. Outstanding year so far. I’ve mentioned him a couple of times this season.

His body of work at MYRTLE this year. 12 appearances all in relief, 14.0 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 1 HR, 1 BB, 16 SO, 0.64 ERA, 0.64 WHIP, 1.89 GO/AO, 1 hold, 9 saves, 10 games finished.

Only work so far in MISSISSIPPI. 1.0 IP, 0 H, 2 BB, 1 SO, 1 game finished. ERA 0.00, WHIP 2.00. Looks like opening night jitters with an effective result.

By the way, I was correct in my hunch about the Braves considering starting Charlie Morton on Sunday. Just noticed that his name is actually on the lineup card here with the guys on the 25-man roster and the coaching staff. Medlen’s also on it.

Braves had submitted Morton’s name to the Diamondbacks last week before the series, just in case they decided to start him Sunday. He pitched tonight, though, as we noted earlier. Threw a shutout at Syracuse.

Medlen is starting Sunday, barring some unexpected late change in plans.

Chop Chop, that IS a great article. Makes all the sense in the world.

I guess the bottom line is still patience, and pitch recognition, regardless of pitch count. Also shows that the “human” element of guessing and being impatient comes into play on a pitchers count, and the same for the pitcher making a “mistake” or being forced to throw a strike when the hitter has the advantage.

Earlier, when I compared Jeff to Chipper, it was a bit of a mis-match. NOBODY is going to ever confuse Jeff with Chipper at the plate. Chipper is going to the HOF, based on his ability to hit the ball and recognize when to swing, and what to look for based on scouting report and his internal “memory” of facing certain pitchers.

Jeff might be out of baseball in the next couple of years if he doesn’t figure it out. So to compare Jeff’s numbers on certain counts compared to Chipper was a bit silly.

Bottom line is that when a pitcher is naive enough to throw Jeff a first pitch strike that is hittable, he’s got enough ability to do something about it. As soon as he has to adjust, he just isn’t cut out (so far) to do much about it.
