Yeah, Delucci would be a very cheap imitation of Edmonds on the Braves just like Delucci’s ex Gina Lee Nolin was a very cheap imitation of Pamela Anderson on Baywatch
Jim Edmonds would be a cheap option, really don’t think it would work, but he’d be cheap. But like I said before this team can’t afford to add more lefties to the lineup, unless Bobby platoons with Frenchy. But that would also mean the Braves need to send someone down to make room. And right now it would be either a pitcher or Greg Norton.
DOB, are you a Jamey Johnson fan? Going to hear him, Luke Bryan and Brantley Gilbert tomorrow in Rome. Should be good times. What say you.
Let’s give Jimmy Baseball a shot to get some time with the squad in CF and helping out Frenchy and then reevaluate around the break if we are still around the top.
“oh yeah, we’ve had such success by rushing Schafer up through the minors, a guy similar to Gorkys who has been rated as the better prospect for the most part. Lacking much sense to me dude.”nolie
Hmmm. Per 162 minor league games played (Schafer only has 63 more minor league games played than Gorkys (so in about 2 months they will have played about the same amount of minor leage games), Schafer averaged 15 HR per 162 games played. Gorkys has averaged about 7. Schafer averaged about 26 SB (while averaging being caught 14 times – not a great ratio). Gorkys meanwhile, has averaged 52 SB’s per 162 games played and gets caught about 12 times every 162 games).
Batting average in minors was .270 for Schafer with an OBP of .339 compared to Gorkys batting .290 with a .352 OBP. Not much difference.
But clearly, the speed is on Gorky’s side.
Last year, in 84 games at AA, Schafer hit .269 with an OBP of .378 (clearly he had plate discipline in the minors), with 10 HR and 51 RBI. (which “pro-rates” to about 20/100 in the HR/RBI dept.) Not bad at all.
Gorkys, in AA, is currently hitting .324 with an OBP of .375. But here’s the kicker.
In 320 minor league games, Gorkys has struck out 220 times (.68 times per game). In 383 minor league games, Schafer struck out 358 times (.93 times per game). So every 3 games, Schafer is gonna have about 3 K’s. Gorkys would have around 2.
Tell me that Schafer “putting the ball in play” 15-20 more times in the season’s first 47 games, wouldn’t have made a difference somewhere along the line?
Oh yeah. According to Shaun, an out is an out, right? Schafer (just like Francoeur) doesn’t have the power output to justify the K’s. Adam Dunn does. Ryan Howard does. Gorman Thomas did. Mike Schmidt did. Dale Murphy did.
I stand by what I stated. IMO, though a month or two worth of games behind Jordan’s “resume” of minor league games, Gorkys appears to be better prepared to not fail as badly as Schafer has so far.
Ate an entire order of three crispy-shrimp tacos while watching that Chipper at-bat from the suites level here. Kid you not. That was a long at-bat. (Plus, the shrimp tacos are small. Good, but small.)
You might be right about Edmunds, but almost a thrid of the season is gone, how long would you try Jim before deciding is time to dump him too? 1 month? That could be risky. I like your observation, but I think braves have waited too long and cant take anymore risks, the next move has to be a good move, not another risk, IMO.
Freshd, no doubt about it that our OF needs some HR’s, but I can’t manage to compare it to Andruw. He is someone that only hits bombs when he gets a hit, and he’s playing in Texas, which is the best HR hitters park outside of the new Yankee Stadium. I would expect nothing less from hhim as a part time player in a park like that.
the only possible explanation is that he juicing again … or since he’s away from TP, he’s actually getting help from what we like to call “A Hitting Coach” instead of “that guy over there whose only advice ever has been to keep your eye on the ball” (aka TP)
GA has now hit safely in his last 7 games and in 14 of his last 15. But, that is only his second extra base hit in those 15 games (both doubles). Maybe he is warming up, finally.
Not watching the game (listening), are they pushing it with Escobar? Seems kind of silly to not DL him retroactive to the last time he played and roll with it, rather than aggravate it, and the be without him for two full weeks?
DOB, like your 9:30 post. Edmonds won’t be the same guy who averaged 30 HR all those years, but I’d bet, at major league minimum, his numbers would easily outpace Frenchy’s and Schafer’s. And if he doesn’t work out, no harm, no foul.
Scott: Jamey Johnson’s really strong, man. One of the few young guys doing real country, hard country, the “outlaw” kind. Love it. His That Lonesome Song CD was one of my favorites from 2008, listened to it alot driving around during spring training. I went back and got his first CD — it’s good, though not as raw or edgy or whatever as the second one.
No other manager in MLB would keep a rookie batting .200 in the lineup EVERYDAY. I think he has only missed 3-4 innings all season. At least move him around in the batting order.
