JD,
It seems like we have this conversation every day, but he really wasn’t that good in 2006 and wasn’t spectacular in 2007. He was useful in those seasons, but not “good” by my standards. To be “good”, you have to do something important very well or put together a few things. In 2006 he hit .260 (below league average) with a .293 OBP (absolutely abysmal), a .449 Slugging % (good, but nothing spectacular or really above-average for a corner OF). He did hit 29 bombs. He struck out 132 times (bad) and walked only 23 times. He was OK in 2006. A useful player. Not a “good” player, but a serviceable, useful corner OF, especially considering his range was close to average and he had the best OF arm in baseball.
In 2007 he hit .293 (good start) with a .338 OBP (hey, at least we’re above OBP’s Mendoza line) and a .444 Slugging % (again, good, but not above average for a corner OF). He only hit 19 bombs, but hit 40 doubles. He drew a few more walks (42), but the strikeouts were still a problem (129). There’s no question this was his best full season. And you might argue he was actually “good” that season. I think he was close, but it’s all nominal. He was a very, very useful player. And again, he was excellent in the field flashing close to average range and the best OF arm in baseball. Won the gold glove. He had a nice season. I’d take that season from ANY of our current outfielders.
We don’t need to go into 2008 and 2009, those were bad years when he was completely useless.
nolie, thanks for the linkage. Good stuff. What are your thoughts on Alex White? Have you seen him pitch? Violent delivery. He just doesn’t look like he has as high of a ceiling than some of the other pitchers.
While freely admitting my sci-fi geekness, I have never developed a fondness for Star Trek. No idea why, just never gotten into it, although I do plan on seeing the new movie…
I want us to take a ceiling through the roof guy with our #7 pick. Our farm system is pretty loaded, and we can afford for a super-high upside guy to not pan out, so I say shoot for the moon. But I’m not very knowledgeable of draft stuff anyway, so take me for what I’m worth (not much, as always).
PWHjort, no offense, but I just got a migrain reading your last post. Are you an after-school nerd? Not that it’s bad, my girlfriend is nerdy, but man, I’m Frenchy’d out after that.
Jeff, shut the hell up and stretch. Take the outside pitch to right field. Open your stance back up and stop wrapping the bat around your head. And eat your vegetables, you spoiled brat. Your mother and I are VERY disappointed in you.
Every guy friend I’ve ever had has been obsessed with Star Wars. They like to make references to it all the time. I have to remind them that I’ve never seen the movie.
I’ve never watched Star Trek, either. We all have weird movie quirks. Mine are the Disney Classics. Love them.
Oh Roman Gal I didn’t mean about Star Wars, you need to see all the real classics before you get to the sci fi crap. Add these to your list if not already mentioned…
The Godfather 1 & 2, Scarface, Goodfellas, Carlito’s Way, Midnight Cowboy, Bonnie & Clyde, Raging Bull, Casablanca, Sunset Blvd, Once Upon A Time in America…I’m just thinking older movies … you’ve seen Fight Club, Pulp Fiction and such, I presume.
Are stats and OBP/Slg% that interesting? Me, I just need to know a few things about a player… avg./HR/K-BB and if he’s durable as to whether I’d like him on my team.
The post wasn’t addressed to you TnBrian. So I’m not upset you got a migraine reading something addressed to a “JD”, nosy little bastid. And no, I’m a “college student moved home for the summer and bored as hell in his hometown” nerd.
FOrget the he is only in Double A comments. If you can hit and have a solid approach at the plate, you can move up the ladder faster. I honestly believe Jason Heyward would outhit Francoeur at the ML level right now. I wouldn’t call him up but he is a better pure hitter. Maybe Gorkys would fare better than Schafer. I have never seen anyone miss so many straight fastballs right down the middle. Lacks bat speed. The hope in me wants to believe that it is his wrist. The realistic me thinks he is not ready. All I know is Francoeur is not the answer and Schafer appears to need more minor league time. Changes need to be made.
McFann, what kind of bird is in your neighbor’s yard? Were you second to last getting McCann’s autograph, or second from first? What’s the mock-up cuss word in the comic strip you posted?
cabraves hi! I was just reading back and noticed all the sci-fi fans. Oops. Nothing wrong with that, just never been my cuppa tea. I’m more into gangster movies and such. You should know by now I like the bad boys. The new Star Trek movie does look good though, and I HAVE seen Star Wars. In the theater. The summer it came out. (I was only 7 or 8 but I remember!) Beat that. lol and even though I don’t love it, I agree that everyone needs to see it.
Anyone wondering like I am why we do not DL Chipper so he can get healthy? He is no real help this way and we can call up Cody Johnson for a short time and see what he’s got. Put Kelly Johnson in center for a few nights to let Schafer catch his breath out ib center and give Diaz RF for a few nights and see what comes of it. Diory at second Yunel back at short and Prado at third. It may seem extreme but what the heck may as well try something new. Right?
TNBRIAN — agreed. Basic stats are all I need on a guy. Too many stats don’t give you a feel for what a player does for your team. I’ve seen plenty of guys batting .260 that I would love to have hitting for my team with RISP. Some guys just get it done when it needs to be done.
Our neighbors have a lot of birds in there yard, but not as many as we do. We have a titmouse nest in our birdhouse (got a camera on it, the babies have their feathers and will be in the nest for about 6 more days), and a Carolina Wren nest in the vent on the side of our house. I can’t get up to it to see the babies and it’s driving me NUTS!! They’ll be leaving soon.
I was second to last getting McCann’s autograph on May 7 at Gwinnett Stadium.
Mock-up cuss word? Is “hecky-hecky” the one you’re thinking of?
I wish I could beat that but seeing as how I was only 4 when return of the jedi came out I never had the chance to see them in the theater…but i have seen them each at least…2 dozen times? (like I said- total geek )
Francoeur can have a different stance everyday, and it will be useless until he changes his approach. Every strike is not a good pitch to hit. Why swing at a 0-0 offspeed pitch. Get ahead and look for a fastball to pound on. Chipper keeps telling him to have a plan at the plate and that idea keeps going through one ear and out the other.
PWH – Sorry, I never saw those conversations. And I’d consider JF’s 2006 and 2007 seasons above average. Not spectacular, but pretty good. Maybe I’m just acclimated to the 2009 Braves and pretty much anything looks good by comparison.
We gotta get you up to speed on those classics! RHR has some excellent choices to start- ah, Casablanca- seriously cool and such incredible dialogue. Some others not yet mentioned: Taxi Driver, Tampopo, Young Frankenstein, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Blade Runner…
Just watched Thief of Baghdad (1940) the other night. Awesome!
How about the hype that Wieters kid is getting? Dang…poor guy’s 0-3, too. But they got a whole by-the-minute article describing his debut! Is this what we’re gonna see with Hanson?
The thing with Franceour is that he just makes too much contact to balls in fair territory. He only has 5 walks or something like that, and it seems his at bats are done too quickly. Yeah the adjustments he made allow him to see the ball better and go to right field more frequently, but his OBP is a disgusting 269. He is just too aggresive, and unlike Schafer he does make contact(a lot of contact) but unfortunately it’s not good contact.
In the bright side his defense is awesome. A cannon in right that’s for sure. But the outfield needs at least a little power boost. Left field it’s fairly decent with Garret who is getting some hits lately(the majority of them singles though, and no homers yet), Diaz is back hitting 300, and Schafer is a rookie who is a heck of a center fielder, but hasn’t figured it out yet at the plate. Like Chipper said, before this season, they depend on Frenchy to hit, I just don’t believe he will this season at least.
And another thing about this lineup is, Chipper is not hitting any homers. Only 4 this far on the season. He is not even on track to hit 20 this season.
Oh and Roman Gal? Add A Bronx Tale to your list as well. And Pulp Fiction and Fight Club. Geeze what is it with you young people today? When my kids ask to rent a movie I always point them to my dvd collection and suggest something from that. They always love whatever I suggest.
Unlike, say, Dave Delucci, I think Jim Edmonds could actually help the Braves. Signing him would make some sense, since it’d be a low- to no-risk proposition. If he’s got nothing left, you dump him and make another move, a trade, before the deadline.
McFann, that’s insane, that Weiters update. Hope it’s not that crazy with Tommy, but at least a pitcher actually is doing something every minute (for half the game).
Luke Scott is hitting the cover of the ball right now. He had 23 homers last year, granted in Baltimore candem yards a serious hitters ball park. But he doesn’t hit lefties particularly well in an already lefty heavy lineup.
I hope that if Wren does trade for a bat, he trades for a right handed bat. That’s pretty tough right now considering the majority of rumored OF’s available are left handed and play left field not right.
It’s obvious Wren is gettin edgy with the offense and how they need to help out all this good pitching we have going. Edmonds would be fine IF Escobar can stay healthy and Chipper can just stay off the DL.
RHR, Steve, I don’t know what Deep Blue Sea was supposed to be, but that scene with Samuel L. Jackson getting eaten by the shark just as he’s getting into one of his patented, screaming at the top of his lung sermons is one of the funniest movie moments I’ve ever seen ….. right up there for me with Brad Pitt getting nailed by the car in Meet Joe Black.
DOB, With all the infield injuries, is there a chance the braves would trade for guy like Jeff Keppinger, who can lay several positions and is a good righthanded hitter.
While were At It Sign Barroid Bonds to hit 4th and use loaf as our #1 pinch hitter…He can do no worse than Loaf in the clean-up spot and he probably plays better D than loaf given his knees have gone out on him
DOB: agree completely re: Edmonds. Have you heard anything about 1) whether or not Jimmy is even in anything close to baseball shape, or 2) whether anyone in the Braves FO is considering signing him?
JD – Adam Dunn is the greatest outfielder in baseball, regardless of his inability to throw (or catch … or run). Please cease disparaging this paragon of outfielding excellence.

I’m Gonna Bring Up the Trade for Shane Victorino or Jayson Werth Bandwagon…!
Who’s On Board The HOOOOOOTRAIIIINNNNNNN?????
We need a Centerfielder, We Need a Leadoff Hitter, We Need More Speed…Shane Victorino Fits All Needs, Plus Jason Werth can run as well
Plus I love his grittyness, and his GO-ALL-OUT attitude which is what this team needs BAD!
Philly Needs some Pitching, Myers is Hurt… Trade Anyone other than our top 3 and Hanson…
Even though trades amongst rivals is rare, especially during the season but Something needs to be done NOW!!!
Frank Wren, Please Stand Up!
