First of all, let me say I disagreed with the Tex trade then and still do now. I was also disappointed we did not give Andruw his comeback attempt. That being said, as disappointed as we all are in Schafer and Frenchy – I am pretty sure we would be equally disappointed in the following numbers…

These are the ‘09 numbers away from the Texas “launching pad”.
We should all do ourselves a favor and check home/road and left/right splits before posting. With that in mind, I do not understand the Braves’ reluctance to platoon Frenchy (respectable .781 OPS vs LHP this year). I would also like to see Schafer and Frenchy (if he must remain in the lineup) given some at bats further up in the lineup where decent hitters are behind them in the order just to see if they could see better pitches. It cannot hurt.

Does anyone have a realistic idea of what it might take to get Derosa? He could play 3B for all the games Chipper misses, SS for all the games Esco misses, and 2B the rest of the time. His bat is better than anything we have in the lineup right now except for the 2 guys mentioned and BMac.
And, DOB – or someone -
why exactly can KJ not go back to the OF, where he played until he
was moved? His defense was better there than at 2B, and what little
pop he has is better than what we’re getting from Diaz/GA.

I’ll assume you missed my point. My point was that we had Tex to start last year, brought Glavine back and still stunk enough to finish in a position to pick in the top 10 of the draft.
If we’re not going to put a roster together that can actually win. Why not do it “right” and let the kids play and have a couple of years picking at or near the top of the draft (like the late 80’s), be in a position to take one of the best 2 or 3 guys in the draft.
I’m well aware that Strasburg won’t be there for us when we pick. That’s a shame, because as soon as Washington takes him, we are going to have one helluva tough pitcher in our division to face for the forseeable future.
I’m not saying lose intentionally. But to lose with the thought process of letting the kids get valuble innings and AB’s under their belts might not be a horrible thing. It seemed to work out for us 20 years ago.

Ya’ll want some good news?
This team can be fixed. But first the Braves are gonna have to unload some players and contracts. Jeff Francoeur, Garret Anderson, Greg Norton, Jo-Jo Reyes and Buddy Carlyle, for obvious reasons.
Javier Vasquez should be traded. Again, for even more obvious reasons ( his value will never be higher and the Braves save 11.5 million). Glavine can show up, pitch the rest of this season and please retire. Chipper could have been traded until our brilliant GM hung his new 42 million dollar millstone on the franchise. Hoss isn’t worth the return on 13 million per season or for that matter, tying the franchise to an over the hill veteran who cannot stay healthy enough to make a sizable difference anymore.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not opposed to the presence of Chipper on the team. I disagree with the financial investment for the return. A series of one year contracts would have been much more sensible. Leaving an open ended out for Chipper and the Braves.
Cox must be forced into retirement. Period. The man has become an embarrassment.
Our Braves have to get young, mean and hungry. We need outfielders who can fly to the ball, run the bases and play defense. Schafer is a start but he’s a rookie.
2010 and beyond offers hope. We just have to suck it up and endure this disaster unfolding before us for another 115 games.
By the way, the Padres have this jewel of a potential lead off hitter in their system. His name is Luis Durango.

Picking Heyward was the beginning of the “new beginning” as far as stockpiling higher draft picks to help down the road.
We got away with not having high draft picks in the 90’s, because A) our previous high draft picks were the cornerstone of our franchise, B) free agents WANTED to come to Atlanta, C) Ted Turner allowed JS to spend on one of the best free agent signings EVER (Maddux), trade for other high end players (McGriff), and KEEP our own guys that were worth every penny that JS paid them.
Times have changed on all three of those fronts. Time to start using the draft to build this team up. Sell off some pieces that will net us MORE young players to build around, and stop signing free agents that cost us those picks.
Of course, similarily to last year, if we sign big free agents, and STILL manage to pick in the top half of the draft, we’ll only have to surrender our 2nd round pick, rather than the first.
In the end, it’s simply about making sound decisions and spending wisely.
I’m actually glad that Hanson hadn’t come up before he will, after having the “Super 2″ status clarified. Very smart of Wren to get one more year out of him for the Braves at the end of his arbitration scheduled years.
However, now that that “window” has passed, there isn’t much excuse to leave him down much longer. Especially if Glavine falters. That being said, I can’t imagine a scenario where Glavine fails, or never makes it back (in the event of a setback before he returns), that Hanson won’t be up for good.
If that does happen, then we’ll all have something to scratch our heads about.

Good point, I did miss your point on the Strasburg comment.
I would be FOR letting the kids play, but only if the kids were in AAA. Guys like Morton, Hanson, Jo-Jo, Medlen, Blanco.
I would not however rush someone like Heyward, Freeman, Cody Johnson, or even Gorkys because they would be completely overmatched. Putting those guys in this line-up would be asking to get no-hit just about every night.

Re Jim Edmunds – if you look at his HRs last year on a hitting chart, most were in Wrigley Field where wind blows out many days. I’ve seen many a game there. In Atlanta, I’m afraid that most of those HRs would be warning track fly balls – and that was last year. He’s not any stronger this year. He’s not a solution; not at all.
As I noted a few hours ago, a good team can only carry, at best, one non-performing hitter. With Ice Cold, Norton and JF, Braves have at least three N-PHs. [note: new stat id.] Upon reflection, choice for Braves is either JF or Blanco in CF if Ice Cold is sent down and Norton DFA’d. JF will do better in short run with big team. B. Jones can replace Ice Cold on roster and play RF, except maybe against tough LHPs. Diaz should play LF against anyone he can hit – GA can play out there against the rest of the side-arming RHPs. Whichever is not in lineup would be #1 PH. KJ should play every day and bat 5th or later in lineup. His BA stats at each position in lineup are compelling – +.300 in each slot. Prado should spell CK at 1st, play when CJ is hurt or resting and very occasionally, against a LHP that KJ will have trouble with, play 2B. Prado should also learn to play LF so that he, Diaz (in RF) and JF can start against a dominant LHP. All these moves give Braves a stronger lineup. No one is an automatic out. JF should bat 8th and learn how to take a pitch or be threatened not with Gwinnett, but with Rome or Danville where the bus rides are so much fun. So, my lineup would be:

Chipper (3B) L-R
McCann (C) L
KJ (2B) L
Diaz (LF) L
B. Jones (RF) L
JF (CF) R

Lots of LH batters in a row unless CK bats 2d or Prado plays 1B. If Prado plays first, move Diaz to 2d in lineup.
Trade target – a RH hitter with power to bat 4th or 5th. Yeah, easy to find, but to paraphrase one of the dancers in Gypsy, “ya gotta have a [target].”
Trade bait: GA will be trade bait at end of July in Braves are out of race, and perhaps even if they are still in race. GA is a “professional DH hitter.” While I think Ross adds real value to team, he might be offered to a team desparate for a catcher, because of injury, or whatever, in return for a strong RH bat. Agree that Myrtle Beach threesome is untouchable. Heyward – .295/.935, 1HR every 15ABs, born ‘89; Freeman – .289/.799 – b. ‘89; Johnson – .269/.971, 1 HR every 10 ABs, 67 Ks in 179 PAs, b. ‘88. Also, consider Rodriguez at Rome – .275/.872, 9 HRs in 160 ABs, b. .87. Gorkys – b. ‘88; and Canizares, .337/.930, 7HRs/178 ABs, 24 Ks and 18 BBs – now there’s a professional hitter but born in ‘79.
So, above list has three 1Bs – two are expendable: Canizares and Rodriguez, unless anyone has doubts about Freeman. Johnson has too much power at young age to give up on unless a real baseball person would conclude that his K problem will make Ice Cold look like a contact hitter. Gorkys looks like Ice Cold – Lite: .324/.770 – no power. He’s expendable – unless you believe that Ice Cold will never make it. And, we’ve got a bunch of other MinorL pitchers. Conclusion: Braves have enough to make a deal for power hitting OF – even if you have to include JF in package.
Frank – you’ve done great so far with pitching; now time to turn your attention to hitting.
Hanson v. Glavine: Braves are in a difficult position. They made a deal with Glavine. He’s done his part and in equity deserves one more chance to see if he can perform at ML level. But, since we are sending Ice Cold down, DFA’g Norton and only bringing up one player (B. Jones), Hanson can start in place of Medlen early next week. If Hanson is great or even good, then no roster move has to be made until Glavine is ready to try it in the bigs. Who knows who will be on DL then? Or, if Glavine is good, then Medlen or someone else (Jo-Jo) goes back down to start for the G-Braves. Indeed, I’d rather see Medlen be used in spot/long relief than Jo-Jo. Jo-Jo should continue to be used as a starter in the hope that he retains some trade value.

Buffalo NY Braves Fan Agreed on the younger guys. Though I’m not sure that Gorkys wouldn’t be better served to do alright up here right now. Not a big power guy and seems to use his speed to get on base. Those guys usually have a little more success early on. Think Furcal, or Giles, who BOTH had better approaches at the plate, when they first came up and were thrust into the leadoff spot.
It was only when they both started “smelling” HR totals, that they started hacking a bit more.
Besides, it’s not like we couldn’t use Gorkys’ defense in the outfield.
As far as asking to get “not hit” everynight? Not like it’s too much different right now, is it? But I agree with your point.
I would be ALL FOR letting Jo-Jo, Morton, Hanson and Medlen (even if a couple of them were in the bullpen), pitching innings and gaining experience, if the future was the objective.
But it’s too late for that now, unless Wren wants to hold a fire sale, and that is NEVER going to happen. Also, with Chipper’s extension, that would be pretty rude to him, to say “thanks for staying, but now were gonna give up”.
But think about it. If we’re WAY out of it at the deadline, Imagine the “pieces” to the puzzle that Wren could get from other teams by moving Lowe, Vazquez, Gonzo and even Chipper if he were so inclined.
Like I said. I don’t for a minute think it’s gonna happen. But guys like Lowe and Vazquez could command quite a bit of players in return for a team that is one reliable starter away from WS contention (which certainly isn’t us).

Great batting stats on JF. So, if I am pitching to him, I want to throw the first pitch off the backstop, because he can’t hit his weight, or Willy Medoza’s little sister’s on 2d pitch. If he were a rookie, that’s one thing, but he’s not. He’s arb-eligible, and a classic ADHD hitter – he’ll swing at anything that moves.

Did anyone else read the qotes from Mark texeria saying that Joe Girardi is the best manager he ever played for. Didn’t he work for Mike Scioscia? Didn’t he work for Bobby Cox ( I know most of you on here hate him but if anyone on the blog thinks Girardi is a better manager please leave now) What the hell is wrong with Tex??? take the company line all you want but don’t dare two amazing managers with hall of fame careers to a guy who tried to fight hisowner in Florida

You guys please take it easy on G Anderson; he’s a professional hitter and knows more than us. He gets so disgusted with the criticism and he gets hits when he needs to. He really does not want to play here because he doesn’t get the love and I don’t blame him.
We need to get another big bat in the outfield to go with GA. We are in THE HUNT for another division championship and it does not matter how many young prospects we have to get rid of, it will definitely be worth it. We can worry about the future in the future. I do not regret the Tex deal; John Shuerholtz brought a star to the Braves and we couldn’t come up with $170 million to keep him. Who cares about the players we lost. Can’t cry over spilled milk.
J D Drew was another Star player again with ties to the Atlanta area and it would be okay with me if we gave up 5 Adam Wainwrights to just have him play 3 months “injured”. These players are good enough to play for the Yankees and Red Sox. Jason Marquis, please!

You mean all the same teams that passed on Lowe when all they had to do was pay him $15 mil per year would now give away good players to acquire him 3 months later and still pay him? Also, other than the Yankees I see no one who will take Vasquez and the money he’s owed through next year for a .500 pitcher. If anyone did they’re not giving up a lot for him imo.

Clint Hurdle leads the Rockies to the 2007 World series and loses. less than two years later, he is gone.
Bobby Cox leads the Braves into the 1999 World Series and gets spanked 0-4. An entire decade later he still has his job. I guess our standards are somewhat DIFFERENT in Atlanta.

All kidding aside, Frenchy might want to try this training. After some serious training it eliminates the use of just your dominant eye and allows you to see the ball deeper into the strike zone. I’ve seen this type of stuff before with hockey goalies. Beltran swears by it. Apparently he started using it some time after October 2006!

Anders, are you telling me that if the Mets (down the stretch), thought that Lowe was the missing link to them getting to the WS, or if Bret Myers is out, and the Phillies think he’d help them make a better run at repeating, that they wouldn’t jump at the chance to get him mid season?
As for Vazquez, the fact that he’s only owed that 11.5 million dollars for next year (along with the pro-rated portion of this year’s salary), is what makes him VERY attractive for a team making a run. Especially a team that is a “.500 pitcher” at the back end of their rotation away from making a run.
I will concede that D-Lowe’s salary over the next 3 years is what will keep teams away from him. But his durability, and competitiveness is unquestioned.
All the teams that passed on Lowe, more than likely weren’t one pitcher away in December (or didn’t think that they were), high expectations in a city and one HUGE injury is all it will take for teams to start calling about Javier’s and possibly Lowe’s availability if the Braves are out of it.
I’m not saying “shop” them now. After all, we’re still “in it”, right? But Wren would be silly to not answer the phone if calls come, and even initiate some of those calls if the Braves don’t fix their offense and fall off the map. Especially if Hudson looks like he’ll rebound.
Hudson could then be the veteran “Ace” of the staff in 2010. If Hudson has setbacks, or is to be dangled as trade bait this winter, then the Braves might as well hang on to Lowe. He could very easily be the “Charlie Liebrandt” type leader for the young rotation guys looking forward.

It looks like I hit post too late. Myers out for the year. BOOM. OUTTA HERE!
That being said. All the more reason for us to keep everybody and make our own run. If the Mets and Phillies keep having injury issues (like we did last year), the East is there for the taking. Only question is, do we have (or will we have) what it takes to actually take it?
Now lets see which GM is more serious about fixing their teams weaknesses the fastest, between us and the Phillies. It will let us know which team is serious about making a run.

Why are Francouer and Shafer in the lineup again? Haven’t they struck out enough lately. Can’t even
put the ball in play. Both probably woiuld struggle at Double A level and that is where they belong.
Play Prado and Diaz every day even if it means moving K. Johnson to the outfield.

Coach, I actually agree with you on Vazquez…but hopefully you’re not talking about trading him right now. When Hanson/Glavine and possibly Hudson here at some point in ‘09, Vazquez should clearly be the odd man out because of that $11.5M written all over him. Wren oughta easily be able to find a contending team this summer that really needs that one pitch they believe will get them to the playoffs, and in return, we get a bat.
