There are RF’s older than Jeff that have better defense then him. He doesn’t dive or jump for balls hit to him. That’s why his Range Factor is like 2.02.

I’m hoping that maybe Gorkys will be more Brave-like

And by more Brave-like, you mean strikes out a lot, doesn’t walk much, and has a bad stolen base percentage, right?

I would rather have Schafer in CF than Frenchy. If neither of them can hit, I’ll take the one with great defense.

jtb, do you consider not getting to balls other 2nd basemen would catch in their pocket a screw up? How about taking the good throw from catcher so far in front of the bag he can’t make the tag? is that a screw up to you. Not errors on paper but plays that should be made.

watched Francoeur closely in BP, last night. The bat drags…in BP…DRAGS, is slow, can’t catch up, the barrel of the bat consistently approaches the ball from below. Bay Area

Exactly what i’ve been saying since last year…Frenchy’s bat is too slow to make it in the bigs. God honest truth.

It’s ok for him to start his swing early in AA, & it was early in his career when guys didn’t know how to pitch to him, but when pitchers adjusted, the results have been no fluke.

Jaramillo did things to get frenchy’s body out of the way before the pitcher even release the ball. Why would he do that? Because Frenchy’s bat speed is just too damn friggin’ slow. If you’ve already taken your strike before the pitcher releases the ball and gotten your hands in position to swing without recognizing the pitch, well, you’ve just become a singles hitter.

Frenchy is toast in this league.

to N8 and SHAUN — here is a simple point I will make about your discussion.

Sorry , but I have to use myself as the example. Take it in the context that it is meant in.

My first 10 at-bats in A-ball I had 3 singles, 3 doubles, 1 dinger, 2 line drive outs, and 1 called strike 3. I was the called the next great undrafted, unknown, walk up to try out and gonna be “whatever”.

My next 10 at-bats I had 4 singles, 1 double, and 5 outs but all balls in play. I was on my way to “The Show” , according to “them” LOL

My next 20 at-bats were an exercise in the many ways to strike out, or attempt to make contact so I could at least say I got a piece. I was the next great NOTHING !! LOL

According to THEM . AGAIN — LOL

I could go on but it’s not about me as much as it is about not knowing what a player is
going to do until you get in there, and that is at every level. Streaks are streaks, both good and bad and every player has them. It all just depends on the person watching as to what context you want to put it in. But to sit and endlessly go on about who would have done what is really ridiculous when you remember that a good average on a team in a different league does not translate to doing the same thing for your team. Witness Kenny Lofton.

I laugh about some of the things that are said on here both good and bad b/c everything could change tomorrow. You are blessed to get to play and for as long as it lasts you should just be thankful, but always knowing that no matter what happens — someone will say you did good and someone will say you need to be traded. LOL

Nice blog DOB. Those trade scenarios posted on here are ludicrous. We’re not going to get a big bat unless we give up something big. Our best trade piece will be Kelly Johnson, especially if his hitting picks up. I posted a few players here yesterday. They’re not huge power bats, but smaller bats that are better than what we’ve got. The names were Randy Winn (if SF eats some salary), Jake Fox, Ben Zobrist, Shin-Soo Choo, and Hunter Pence.

Some of those are probably unlikely, but if the Braves are desperate for a bat now, then I think that’ll be the best crop they’ll be able to get. SF would have to eat a lot of Winn’s salary, Fox is a big prospect w/o a position to play in Chicago, Pence is having a good year.etc.. Again, these options are a helluva lot cheaper in terms of salary and prospects that what others are suggesting, and are could probably be moved sooner, if again the braves were desperate for a deal now.

Why is Jordan not a Brave…what is it about the young guy that makes him not worthy of wearing the uni…Could it be the humble way he took his punishment and abuse last year…Or maybe the way he rebounded after coming back from the suspension…or the way he worked his butt off to beat out Josh Anderson…I guess I missed something along the way…The kid’s here ahead of schedule and struggling for it…I think that we would be better served if we tried him leading off against righthanders…He has a good eye and would see better pitches in that spot…I would like to see him try to lay a bunt down every once in awhile….I like Yunel in the two hole and I think Kelly would be a big help in the 6-7 spot

Original Jon: Ryan in TN. Sounds like you are giving up on the season already and looking forward to next year, when the reality is that the Braves are only 2.5 games out of first with over 117 games left to play.

Yeah Jon, the Braves are only 2.5 games back, but guess what? On May 27th of last year, the Braves were also 2.5 games back and in 3rd place. They ended up 20 games out by the end of the season. What similarities are there between the two team? Both have atrocious bullpens. Both had Francoeur. We had Kotsay then and that currently is a step up from what we have. Same at first. We had Tex, now we have Kotchman and the edge goes to Tex. Both had Johnson. Our top three starters this year are better than last years, but the results are still the same because we have no offense. Now Jon, you have to admit that it’s really easy to give up on a team that is this fragmented.

I disagree. What has happened in the three years I’ve been blogging is that the team has played consistently mediocre baseball, and even the most optimistic, Bobby loving fans have begun to become fed up with it–N8

I agree N8. I used to be one of the staunchest supporters of Bobby Cox. But the further this debacle has gone on, the easier it has become to see that Bobby has glaring flaws and should be replaced by someone who’ll remove the aura of Club Med from the clubhouse.

I think we should put Infante as the full time starting 2B once he is back, put Kelly back in LF as the full time starter. I don’t know if trading Francoeur is the answer, the bigger problem is CF right now but Wren and Co. knew they would take the lumps with Schafer this year. Jeff knows he needs to improve but he hit a sharp ball last night off Lincecum and got a hit late in the game. I think Atlanta needs a new hitting coach personally and stop messing around and call up Hanson.

Frenchy’s swing is as bad as I have seen it…… The problem is, it’s all in his mind – his approach to hitting and that’s Terry Pendleton’s JOB. Why won’t he address the psychological issues? My personal opinion is that he doesn’t have the skills needed to be a hitting coach. Think what this team could be with a true hitting coach and not just a figurehead waiting for Bobby’s long overdue departure. Wren did well in acquiring the necessary pitching and even the bullpen isn’t that bad with a couple exceptions , Buddy, Bennett and maybe Moylan isn’t quite ready. But where’s the offense we needed, he passed on every opportunity with the exception of Garet Anderson and IMO is a liability. Anderson plays against left handed pitchers and looks terrible – almost like a little leaguer stepping in the bucket and unable to cover the outside half of the plate.
I really don’t know what our options are, but before dumping Frenchy, I’d hire a true hitting coach.

Prattvillenolzfan

Wes……

Let me get this straight…..

Just because Franceour hit a ball “hard” last night, and Jeff “knows” that he has to improve that is reason enough to overlook the fact that he is absolutely atrocious.

Hell….even pitchers that hit 125 “hit the ball hard” everynow and then….

and just because he “knows” he has to improve doesn’t mean that he will…

How many people “know” that smoking is bad for you but yet do it anyway….

As far as Pendleton goes…..If the talent isn’t there, or refuses to listen, there’s really not much Pendleton can do….We can continue to blame Pendleton all we want, but the fact remains that Wren and Cox has set this team up to fail….NOT PENDLETON……………When your “star player” is incapapble of playing more than 4/5 games a week, you are going to lose…..

Why do we want to bring up Hanson….so the same thing that happened to Medlen can happen to Hanson…..

The only way we are going to get better, is to start from the Top and work our way down………..

That…. plus a RF power bat………

What’s wrong with changing a nickname?

(Gwen Knapp)

(05-26) 21:16 PDT — A gutsy little counter-protest took place at the corner of Third and Kings streets before the Giants’ Memorial Day matinee Monday.
The primary demonstration involved a small contingent of people calling for a boycott of the visiting Braves, hoping that someday soon Atlanta’s baseball team might pick a bird or a big cat as its mascot instead of caricaturing American Indians. As the group waved its signs and chanted the word “racism,” a burly young man walked by and screamed: “No, it’s not. It’s in the sport. Who cares?”

He hit the last two words really, really hard, taking a bold stand for apathy. Clearly, he cared very deeply about not caring.

“Nobody likes to change their views,” Steve Jacobson, a protester from Oakland, said quietly and a tad sympathetically.

Time is not on the side of the status quo. High schools and colleges have been switching away from American Indian names for years. The NCAA now restricts the use of tribal mascots in its postseason events. Some team in the pros will take the leap in the next five years.

Monday’s protest drew only about a dozen formal protesters, but other people stood on the periphery and joined the chants. Tony Gonzales of American Indian Movement West, said it was the first such demonstration he had held or witnessed at a Giants game.

His organization, he said, plans to pressure pro teams all over the country and lean on President Obama, reared by a maternal grandmother who had American Indian ancestors, to denounce the name of the NFL team in his new backyard. The “Redskins” are, as Gonzales points out, the most unequivocally disrespectful nickname of all.

It’s also remarkably uncreative, out of date and not particularly evocative of the regions. Stealing the Senators name from the old baseball franchise would work better in Washington. And why not call Atlanta’s team the grits? Only deep, irrational emotion stands in the way, defying the lecture of the young and noisy dissident. Who cares?

I think there are good hitting coaches out there who are better than TP. Don Baylor, Jaramillo in Texas (and he somehow taught Andruw how to hit again) are a few that come to mind. I think Frenchy has some talent its just lost right now. I’d like you to tell me a hitter Terry P has made better and had progress with the last few years. Does Jeff need to perform better? Yes. Does he know this? I’m sure he does. Oh, and bringing up Hanson would make our rotation the best in MLB.

why doesn’t Francoeur see a sports psychologist like Smoltz did back when he was having trouble pitching back in the 90’s?

remember how everyone was down on Smoltz wanting him to be traded? Then, he went to the sports shrink, got straightened out, and hasn’t looked back since.

It would suck for Frenchy to leave here just to tear it up with another team.

why not move mccann to first to get him in the lineup nightly. Its obvious he is scared behind the plate. It seems that every play at the plate he plays up front and has to swipe tag.
then trade kotchman for an outfielder. you could bring up sammons and start ross.
you would have something to trade with for an outfielder this way.
we have the worst home run production of any team in baseball and we have to sit our strongest hitter every 4-5 days. The braves need hitting and they need it fast.
Why not look at bringing up Heyward and lets see what he can do? At this point we have nothing to lose. Our outfield is absolutely embarrasing.
There is nothing in this lineup that makes you want to sit up and watch.
When I was growing up I had people that I was anxious to see hit. Now I just turn it off and go get on the internet.
Frank Wren needs to give something to the fans. We had opportunities to get Dunn, abreu and we get anderson. He is so slow he cant even cover half of left field.
If it were not for the starting pitching we would be in last place!

Come on people, lets be real here. All these potential trades by these keyboard gm’s make me laugh. The problem here is not the players. It is the manager and the front office. Look, how many years are we gonna keep paying Chipper all this big time money to not produce and sit with injuries. I like him as much as the next guy, I mean he plays hurt and is a leader, but its time to move on. In sports, loyalty is a franchise killer. You have to be heartless to be sucessful. Once a player is no longer productive make the needed decision and move them on. Players don’t care about the fans, they care about the money. So why show loyalty. Don’t forget this is after all a business. Sorry about the rambling. Oh look at that, Jones hurt again…

I was at tonight’s game. I live in San Francisco. I was in the 4th row behind the Braves dugout. When the Braves would come off the field, whoever had taken the last out would come in and throw the ball to only fans who were wearing a Braves hat or jersey. It was funny to see Giants fans get mad, lol.

Anyway, I left after the top of the 6th because it started to get cold. Plus I didnt think that we were going to start hitting. I saw Franceour’s first two weak at bats. I get home and see Franceour batting with runners on first and second, no outs, top of the 7th. The pitcher just had just walked a guy. What does Franceour do, swings at the first pitch, weak fly ball.

As soon as Escobar comes back, it would be nice to see the Braves start Prado in Franceour’s place.

The Problem is NOT Bobby or Franks, its Chippers 0 – 3 w/ 3ks, Its Frenchy, its Schaffer, and RISP production. Right now were a .500 team, we need a player who can some us over, but its not possible for a single player to do that, unless we pull off a “Last year Dodger run” by bringing in someone like Manny Ramirez

Okay, that was constructive.

I don’t know. That place is a dead zone. I didn’t expect them to win this series nor was I confident we’d even win a game. I mean, Medlen and Kawakami. What are you gonna do? They don’t have it.

I’d rather see JoJo with a pulled hamstring than Kris Medlen pretty much ever again.

This is some serious s***. These guys are pathetic. It needs to be said.

I didn’t think much of that homestand. We played great more or less against the Blue Jays who were struggling, but whatever. 6 and 3 was a pleasant surprise and there are many, many other teams out there that I mind losing to other than the Giants. I like them, I think they could be good and not just when they’re playing the Braves but dammit, this season is slipping away as we speak and it doesn’t seem like they’re doin a damn thing about it.

I like Jeff just as much as the remaining people who still like Jeff and he’s got the best outfield arm in baseball but he’s not improving, he’s not learning. His days with the Braves are numbered or at least should be.

I can’t possilby comprehend why any team would want him or would be willing to give up anything to get him. Honestly, if he goes somewhere else and gets his **** together and starts hitting again, I’ll just be happy for him. I won’t be pissed. I don’t think we’d miss him that much but if he does well more power to him.

Francoeur to the Red Sox. For his sake, I hope so. Escaping Atlanta will only help his career as it has so many other forme Braves. But what would the Braves get in return? Most likely, as in the Texas trade, nothing of real significance.

Still, I would prefer to see Francoeur traded to Texas. Has anyone else noticed that every time the Rangers are discussed by baseball people, they rehash how the Rangers duped the Braves in that trade. Texas should be indicted for grand theft. Of course, the Braves management should be committed for incompetency.

Hey DOB, long time lurker but I have a question. Sorry if you’ve covered it recently. Do you have any inside scoop on why Bobby continues to sit KJ against lefties? Ok, an argument could be made with Infante (better BA vs LHP in ‘09 but falls or equal to KJ in every other stat) But beats Prado in every stat on the line. (.325/.400/.675/.1.075 to .242/.342/.485/.827). And I’m hoping we can put the ‘better defense’ to rest now after last night.
Also is it fair to call him ’streaky’ when he’s sat every other night? Why isn’t he given the faith others with less promise (currently) are given? Just curious. Not in anyway this huge Kelly Johnson fan with a baseless gripe here, just really wondering what the story is. I went to the last 2 Braves-Giants games. Chipper is in pain right now. When one is swinging a bat, you take a step forward to swing. Every time Chipper taps that front foot forward, he is in a lot of pain. He has an excuse for his poor series. It isnt like Chipper forgot to hit in the past 3 days.

However what is Franceour’s excuse? I have nothing against Franceour. It’s his play over the past couple of years that I have something against. It’s too bad that he cant hit because having his arm in right field is a real asset. However, you have to be able to get on base and knock in runs in this game. He just doesnt have it.

“What everybody fails to see is the Braves don’t need new outfielders, they need a REAL hitting coach not Terrible Terry Pendleton.” Terry Pendleton’s favorite coaching word is “Knucklehead”. He actually thinks that he knows more about hitting than these players….so, Chipper Jones has to step in and go to the cage with Jordan Schaefer to try and get him to stop swinging under the ball because all Pendleton does is call him a knucklehead. Francouer had to work out with Rudy Jaramillo of the Rangers just to get Pendleton’s stupid ideas out of his head. Looks like Jaramillo is working with Andruw Jones with positive results. Why don’t we trade a player for Rudy Jaramillo? Stupid statement, I know. The one thing that Chipper Jones and Brian McCann have in common is that their Dad’s are great hitting instructors. Get a positive hitting coach who can teach gameplan hitting and the Brave’s hitting will come around.

I sure hope the braves front office has learned their lesson the last couple of years and decide not to trade the farm (at least none of the top 5 prospects in the system) to try and get an outfield bat. He’s obviously giving that off to more than just us Braves fans. That whining he did last year after having to go to the minors definitely didn’t help.
