N8,
Lowe did spend all but 3 of his seasons in the vastly tougher AL as a reliever and has spent the past 4 seasons in a pitcher’s park while Vazquez has spent the past 4 in hitters parks and 3 of them in the AL. Just a point. ERA without context isn’t comparable. But I agree with you that it is more likely that Lowe will have the better ERA. However, I really like what Vazquez has done so far and it wouldn’t SURPRISE me if he had a better ERA than Lowe.
So why was Medlen allowed to pitch that last third of an inning? The only thing I can figure is so his ERA would be under 10. That one batter made the difference.
Medlen has good stuff. I see so much potential in him. I’m comfortable with Medlen getting more starts. He had a meltdown in the 2nd, however made adjustments and retired the last 12 batters he faced.
What did I say about Franceour, at most, getting a single when he tries to get a hit to right? He just proved me right once again. Looping single to right. That sums up the capability of Franceour to hit. No power.
Hey there – I’m new to the blog but wanted to know if it’s always this negative and if I’m just wasting my time? I am a Braves fan through good or bad and it’s a shame to read some of the comments on here… Sure, our offense needs some help. We have a kid out there being embarrassed on a national stage but what if we got him some runs? And we have an all star catcher who is so important to our offense that he can’t afford to take a much needed day off – but hey, they are playing a Cy winner at his home field after a time zone change with no off day – not making excuses but it’s not an easy game situation fir this team – so just cheer them on – no need to be haters – the NL East race is very much alive
If we call up Hanson right now and don’t ever send him down again, he likely won’t achieve super 2 status. He’ll still be a free agent after 2015, but we save a butt load of money from not having to pay him an extra arbitration year.
Eric from MO, I really don’t think Medlen’s numbers, particularly in his limited big league experience, are going to be that big of an issue for a team looking to acquire him. They’re looking more at his stuff, his makeup, and his ability to handle pressure. He had a setback in the second, but looked great after. I believe teams look at the potential more so than the numbers….if a prospective team thinks it sees a flaw in a player and still believes that flaw can be worked out, it won’t keep a team from trying to acquire him.
Couch Tater, perhaps he picked the wrong sport, huh?
It’s too bad for Brodie, and for Chiefs fans. Because I think with better Health, he would have been a fine NFL QB (especially in a Herm Edwards kind of run first system). But being on the field on Sundays is kinda important.
All weather Fan, yeah you probably need to leave. I wasnt here on the blog in 95 but Im pretty sure Mfin was complaining because Glavine gave up two hits and Coach was complaing because we only managed to score one run.
Paul — Francoeur finally puts up a good at-bat, works the count and gets a pitch he can hit, and all you can say is “see? no power”? Against Lincecum??
Damn man, I’m pulling for the Braves to get rid of Francoeur as much as anyone else here, but that at-bat that he put up was one of his best in recent games, even if it was just a soft single.
Can we please drop Norton and his 100 something batting average now? Congrats Norton. You WERE a good bat off the bench for us at one point. This year, we might as well run the pitcher up there.
All in all I think that was a decent outing by Medlen. He had one bad inning but when things started to go bad in the second he recovered and pitched very well after. It would have been easy for him to have a complete meltdown like he did in his first outing. Assuming that Glavine is not ready to make his next start, I would like to see Medlen get another start.
Really interested to see how Kawakami responds tomorrow on 4 days rest after pitching 8 innings. He looked great on 5 days rest last start. If his control is good he should be sharp.
PWHjort, I agree with you. Y’all know how much I was down on the Vazquez trade at the time, and thought we could have spent the money better. But the guy has done a MORE THAN fine job, and for now I’m drinking the kool-aid.
As for Lowe being a reliver? Good point. But on the flip side, it’s often tough for a reliever to have a lower ERA because one bad outing skews it a whole bunch.
But I wouldn’t be surprised if Vazquez has a lower ERA. He’s shown through basically 2 months of baseball that he’s come to pitch this year. But I expect Lowe to have the lower ERA at year’s end.
But let me put it this way. I expect Lowe to have an ERA around 3.50 at year’s end. If Vazquez happens to be in that neigborhood (either higher or lower – but close), we will have had a very nice trio of starters in our rotation, because I don’t see JJJ falling apart unless those innings last year, and the ones he’s piling up this year, come back to haunt his young arm.
I was just giving you crap before, because you stated it as though it was a given that Vazquez would have better numbers than Lowe when the season is through. It’s certainly possible, but not a given.
Bennett has definitely performed considerably better the last half dozen or so appearances. He just seems like a guy that has to start out his own inning.
I just can not understand why KJ would swing at the first pitch in the 8th inning from a guy that was delivering his 109th pitch. I just can not wrap my mind around it.
Medlen probably gets another start on Sunday unless they decide to bring up Morton for a spot start or trot out Campillo (doubtful since he just got off DL). After that, I suspect that the Braves are hoping to trot Glavline out during the next homestand when they need a 5th starter (Saturday against the Brewers perhaps?) This is assuming he survives his next rehab assigment.
