Bravos, in retrospect, giving Ross the start may well have been the smart move. But look at that line-up WITHOUT McCann in it — to call it “Punch and Judy” might be an insult to the latter, lol!
And Kotchman sucks! There I said it. I’m sick of people defending him. He isn’t a a major league caliber first baseman. We need power and RBIs from our first baseman and he just isn’t cutting it. He has one good stretch, but now he is sucking again! If we are going to keep running a weak powerless outfield out there, we at least need a power hitting first baseman.

Can anyone develop under Pendleton? He’s part of the reason why we have no hitters. The 3 best hitters we have are Chipper, Escobar, and McCann. Chipper’s dad helps him through his slumps. McCann’s dad is the same way. Escobar has a attitude problem and doesn’t listen, but in the case of Pendleton how can we blame him. For Christ’s sake, Andruw had to get on track with the Texas hitting coach. Pendleton screwed him up so freakin bad that it carried through his last year here and then worse in LA. Pendleton is sucks so bad. And hell, lets not forget that piece of dirt pitching coach McDowell. What a maroon!

How long will the effects of the injury last?
A simple toe sprain can be treated with rest, ice, elevation, and anti-inflammatory drugs. Pain and swelling can disappear and full range of motion return within 24 to 48 hours.
More serious toe sprains or a toe fracture may last 7 to 10 days. An acute form of toe sprain – turf toe – is accompanied by pain, swelling, and loss of range of motion that can last weeks or even months.
It’s been 4 days…that’s got to be more than just a sprain…or Chipper is really old.
Got to say I didn’t expect McCann to play, and just cause Chipper and Yunel can’t play doesn’t mean McCann doesn’t need a day off. And regardless Mac has 3 hits…and no rbi. Either way the lineup is punchless.
Gorkys Hernandez is hitting .331 with 9 SB as AA Miss. And he is said to be as good a CF’er as there is in the minors. Time to call him up.
“But he may not be ready”.
I agree… he might not be. But after 2 months, we KNOW Schafer isn’t ready to hit big league pitching. Time to send Schafer to Gwinnett and see what Hernandez can do while Wren works the phone for two outfielders.
18 Wheels of Love , you’re right. Andruw was called up during his 3rd pro season, at age 19. Heyward is in his 3rd pro season right now at age 20. And most Braves scouts compare Heyward’s offensive talents to that of a young AJ. The similarities are many. I think there’s an good chance he’ll be a September call-up this year… and I’m certain we’ll see him next September at the very latest.
SOS, Yeah, I’m Getting Tired Of that “Willie Mays Hayes” Shyt K-Fer is doing out there, he needs to play deeper, because he has no where near the range of A. Jones at his age…
I thought sending Francoeur to AA was the right move, however, they wussed out and brought him back up after 3 games. In retrospect, he probably should still be there. I suspect much of his woes are betwixt his ears.
Shoulda Got Dunn – wow, why exactly are you not the general manager of a Major League team, or at least a beat writer who does not have to pay attention to a game, just has to answer questions from the incredibly intelligent masses who populate the blog? Since this game is the end of the world for all Braves’ fans, DOB clearly has a major attitude problem.
Eh I don’t think much about this one. They’re tired…and the lineup. Yeah. The real Braves will hopefully show up tomorrow night. Looking forward to seeing how the kid comes back out. Hopefully at least Yunel will be back and maybe Chipper’s toe will be back to normal by…the next homestand?
Unknown, yes he will. Texas would be insane not to take a Frenchy,Morton,Hernandex tyoe deal for Cruz, I hope. Maybe I’m hoping too much, but man he’s got that power that’s lacking so bad right now.

I really think today’s performance has sealed the deal on Francoeur. Not that he’ll be gone tomorrow… but I would guess that the front office is every bit as convinced as the fans are that a change has to be made in right field.
It’s weird because he looked really good in the spring and through April. And after a 2-3 week slump, his swing looked really good again for about 5 games heading into Sunday’s game. But yesterday, he came up with runners in scoring position and no one out, swung at the first pitch, and tried to pull an outside breaking ball for a weak out. And today, he’s looked like a right-handed version of Jordan Schafer at the plate.
We’ve GOT to replace both Francoeur AND Schafer ASAP.
LOL DOB, I’ve definitely been the first and 21st to say it on here. And I get a lot of crap for it usually, but Kotchman just isn’t hacking it. Yeh Schafer and Frenchy are sucking, but so is Casey. He has been put in the position to hit behind Chipper and McCann and drive in runs and he isn’t doing it.
And if the Braves aren’t going to change things with Schafer and Frenchy and Kotchman…what is to keep a team from walking the bases loaded to get to Frenchy and Schafer and Kotchman in a critical situation?
Braves2249, you wrote yourself from the definition you found: “More serious toe sprains or a toe fracture may last 7 to 10 days.”
Then you follow that by drawing this conclusion: “It’s been 4 days…that’s got to be more than just a sprain…or Chipper is really old.”
What part of “more serious toe sprains or a toe fracture may last 7 to 10 days” did you not understand? Or did you just dismiss the “more serious toe sprains” part of it?
If he can’t play then why in the hell is he hitting. Bobby Cox just baffles me more and more with every strike. This organization is going down the tube. There is absolutely no fucin way Jordan Schaffer is a Major League Baseball player. Freakin unbelievable.
Once again, we get a good look at why the Braves are extremely unlikely to contend for the playoffs with a suspect roster and an overmatched decision maker in the dugout.
Did anyone else (other than Chance the Manager) think there was even the remotest possibility that Schafer was going to get a hit with the bases loaded and 2 outs. Chipper should have been at the plate, not in the on deck circle.
If he gets a hit, the Braves are tied/ahead and Anderson hits for Vazquez, who was about at the end of his rope. Chipper doesn’t get a hit, Anderson goes into the game as the 9 hitter to lead off the next inning, getting Vazquez out of the game after he struggled in the fifth.
After Schafer predictably makes the 3rd out, Cox again leaves his starter in too long, then has to get Bennett out after hitter to pinch hit for him, resulting in another Carlyle catastrophe.
Exactly how long is Chance the Manager going to leave Schafer in the lineup day after day with no replacement/backup on the roster? And it’s getting to the point that the same can be said about Francouer, who is only awful about 9 out of 10 at bats, compared to Schafer’s 10 of 10.
Just because the Braves swept an overrated Blue Jays team that played WAY over its head the first six weeks of the season, some folks (including the person who conducts this blog) thought this team was on the way up and about to challenge for the division lead.
The only way this team gets close to contending is if the division goes the way it did the year the Mets went something like 82-79 and finished first because no one else was over .500. The lack of offense and shaky middle relief is going to keep this team from getting over .500, and the Phillies and Mets will figure some way to get to 85-88 wins at least despite their respective flaws.
The Braves missed a chance when they went 3-3 at home against the lowly B’backs & Rockies. They’ll be lucky to get back from the West Coast without being back around .500 again.
As for the CF position, this team has no good option. Blanco is assuredly not the answer, and the person who could have filled in is now playing regularly in Detroit.
Wren needs to find someone who can play the position on a stop-gap basis and if Norton has to be sacrificed to make room, it needs to be done. It’s not like he’s done such a great job this season.
“Good grief, what a difference a day makes here on the ol’ blog.”
Well that’s what you get here. Most of the time no persepctive at all, just gut reaction. Gotta thank god sometimes that these people are not GM’s, coaches, managers, or anything of importance. If they think we suck now, I would hate to see what we would like after some of the suggestions I hear on here.
You might as well but an x next to the Dodgers name (x-Dodgers) in the newspapers. No one in that division is going to beat them. 15-6 Dodgers at Colorado. They’re about to win their 21st game in 29 in divisional games.
The unbalanced schedule sucks. Is anyone else tired of seeing the same damn teams play each other 20 times a year?
The comparison of Andruw Jones being ready at 19 and Heyward is a little misleading. Many in baseball question the veracity of Andruw’s stated age.
It is sad to see what they are doing to the kid’s psyche. He obviously needs some time in Gwinnett. Mickey Mantle got sent down his first year and it didn’t seem to hurt his career.
I think as always most on this blog appear too young and immature for me to follow it reguarly anymore….
While I dont get upset like many here do when the Braves have one 3/4 games I do see the need for another bat its a huge weakness. The bullpen is fine.
It’s just plain stupid to keep running Chipper out there to reinjure his toe. Put a boot on it and let it heal. He shouldn’t be running against Toronto or pinch hitting today if it is still hurting. No reason for him to risk hurting it more.
Oh hell I thought the “the braves are who we thought the were….” crowd wouldn’t come out for a few more hours. Looks like mr baseball has been writing that since the 7th inning.
a team can get by with one Frenchy but not 2….I mean Blanco was hitting like this last year and everyone hated him…and Schafer chases the ball to the wall like he did too. I’m not campaigning for Blanco, but Schafer hasn’t separated himself from Blanco’s abilities.
Jeff Francoeur did not struggle when he made his major league debut. As crappy as his OBP has been the last few years, he wasn’t an awful baseball player until 2008. Schafer has struggled since the first series of the season. He hasn’t made any mark as a major leaguer. He certainly shouldn’t have the leash that Francoeur had last season.
In the words of US Grant, after the first day of Shiloh was a major Union setback, and WT Sherman commented that they had just gotten the holy tar beat out of them: “Yeah. Lick ‘em tomorrow, though.”
The bullpen is not fine. The long/middle relief isn’t good at all and Gonzo has been very shaky in 1-run save situations (50% is not a good ratio). Soriano has been good/great and Moylan is obviously still recovering.
Methinks Mr. Carlyle is not long for a major league paycheck.
Seriously, how long can the Braves keep trotting out the gas can?
Also, another very poor day for the apparently overmatched (at the plate) young Mr. Schafer. He’s racking up strikeouts faster than Nolan Ryan — except Ryan was a pitcher.
And another bad day at the office for Frenchy, with 7 LOB. Maybe reading Bradley’s column got to him today.
Can’t beat anybody going 1-for-9 with RISP. Yuck.
I really wanted to make a few comments about the struggles of Shafer and Frenchy, but there’s more crucifying on the blog today than the Roman’s performed! lol
Anything I have to say about Shafer and Frenchy would pale by comparison!

There I said it.

It’s just plain stupid to keep running Chipper out there to reinjure his toe. Put a boot on it and let it heal. He shouldn’t be running against Toronto or pinch hitting today if it is still hurting. No reason for him to risk hurting it more.

a team can get by with one Frenchy but not 2….I mean Blanco was hitting like this last year and everyone hated him…and Schafer chases the ball to the wall like he did too.

Yuck.
