Random, In response of one of your lasts posts
“Was “Drunk 24:7″ a play on or take off from “Austin 3:16″? (’Cause it’s usually “24-7″ in other contexts.)
Yeah — good times with the old WWF.”
Absolutely!!! Man I miss the old WWE, I can’t watch the commercail crap they promote today…
I’m calling for a sweep, hopefully we Spot Double J some runs early and he pitches 7 innings giving up 2 runs

Bay Area Steve, too funny man. However you’re on your own with the Whitesnake thing. Due to me only having the radio feed this year. My cable company pissed me off when I got my new house, so I’m not giving them any more money than I have to. Besides, I’ve got a busy schedule all summer, so I’m not sure it would be worth it. I used to enjoy DVR’ing the games and watching them later, but not so much anymore.
If the team is still in the hunt in August when my time frees up a bit, I’ll probably order Extra Innings at the break.
Anyhow, my point is, that I wouldn’t see whatever it is that you did. But in spirit I’ll be laughing.
Perhaps a “photoshopped” image of DOB wearing a Bon Jovi T-Shirt and a hat with the American Idol logo on it? Did I just “say” that outloud? Ooops.

PWHjort — I don’t have the paper with me, but if I remember, it enabled estimates to be made on the whole range of averages and at bats. How do you compare someone hitting .340 in 200 at bats with someone hitting .320 in 290? For me, its utility is evaluating young players in partial seasons, say, Josh Anderson, when he hit .294 in 136 at bats for us last year, compared to an alternative young player.

Where’s the new guy?

Again, a very interesting idea, but we already have tons of metrics like Runs Created, WARP, VORP, etc… that accomplish the same thing. I would like to see the paper though, because it does seem very interesting.
Steve from OH

Braves Paisan, I’d love to see that paper too…sounds very interesting.

…paroxysms of joy…
The phrases one finds on this blog….
I’m with the people who say we need to give Frenchy more time. I think, as somebody else pointed out (KC?, that Frenchy’s EARLY success has brought on (rightfully or not) expectations that he just can’t duplicate this soon after the struggles last year caused him to change his approach at the plate. When he shows PATIENCE at the plate (first pitch swinging is not always bad, if the pitch is something he can handle), starts concentrating on hitting the ball to the opposite field, he seems to get more comfortable at the dish. Once he’s comfortable, it really seems like he starts hitting the ball hard to ALL fields.
I also think that his struggles are AMPLIFIED because of the need for us to have a big bat in the middle of our lineup, which is something most fans EXPECTED Frenchy would be from the moment he came up to “The Show” and had unbelievable success. If we had an Adam Dunn, Matt Holliday, or Jermaine Dye out in LF, and an Andruw Jones (the Andruw Jones that mashed the ball for a couple of years), I honestly believe our fan base would be more tolerant to having Frenchy in the bottom of the order, trying to do the little things he’s going to have to do in order for him to rebound the way we want him to. Just something to think about.

Why did it go back to 703 comments? I refresh it and refresh it and it still says “703 comments”. Ugh…

Chewing gum is a distraction. Whether it’s conscious or not, your brain still has to focus on the act of chewing which means there’s less room for you to focus on other things. Plus, if you’re chewing while you’re batting, your head will move. It bothers me all the time when I see our players chewing gum.
May 24th, 20091:07 pm
I have to chime in on the gum chewing discussion. I chewed gum when I played. It does calm the nerves and I suppose it could be a distraction, if you constantly chewed, but its only natural that when a pitcher starts the windup you Stop chewing. Now, chewing tobacco is a different story.
May 24th, 20091:12 pm
PWHjort, I will try to post a link to it; as a member of the ASA I can get on-line access to journal articles. It is written in Bayesian Math: prior distributions, posterior distributions conditional on multivariate data, etc, etc.
Now, as we have opened that can (of corn), have you followed the math/stat arguements on the existance (or not) of streaks in professional sports? In the words of Keb’ Mo’: “that’s a whole nutha thing!”
Vivlamore, get your ass on the blog.
May 24th, 20091:13 pm
(in a Homer Simpson voice) jaw goes up, jaw goes down, jaw goes up, jaw goes down……oooops I forgot to swing…..mmmmm bubble flavored….arggggggggg
May 24th, 20091:15 pm
Sabathia goes for the Yanks today against the Phillies. I hope he’s good. Wakefield against Tim Redding and the Mets, and the Braves got JJJ on the hill. If it plays out right, the Bravos should be tied with the Mets at the end of the day, a half game out of first. That would be nice.
Gotta have JJ in the AllStar game. I’d even pick him over Lowe and Vazquez just because hardly a person outside of Atlanta even knows he’s a pitcher. Imagine if he were in Boston/NY/LA/Chi. You know he’d have been in the ASgame last year.
May 24th, 20091:18 pm
JJ will be selected, I believe. He dazzled NYC in that start against the Metros.
Is this thing on?
May 24th, 20091:20 pm
Roman Gal, I’d rather see players chew gum then tobacco. I’d hate to see the inside of Chipper’s mouth from all the years of dipping. I know he had a cancer spot or two removed years back but then started it up again.
I dont think so. We have no leader.
May 24th, 2009
yupp you are on……Go Braves
May 24th, 20091:22 pm
I find it int’resting to look at a player’s stats by inning. Just kinda int’resting to see in which innings they do good, and in which innings they do bad.
Sorry…that was random…I’m sorta ready for the game to start.
JJ in the all star game would give Scott Boras a giant boner so he can fleece us in JJ’s arbitration negoitations.
May 24th, 20091:23 pm
The Blog is working OK now…but yeah, where’s DOB?
May 24th, 20091:24 pm
When we traded for JJ we thought he’d be a solid pickup. He has been pitching his tail off ever since he got to Atlanta. I know there has been some debate as to whether he was a front of the rotation starter or not. Based on what you see and hear do you think he is a number 1 or 2 or do you think he will come back to earth and be a solid number 3?
May 24th, 20091:25 pm
PWHjort, uh, yeah! Boras seems slick that way.
May 24th, 20091:26 pm
PWJ-I’ll take the All Star selection for JJ. He isn’t even arb eligible until after NEXT season. MIght be a good idea to sign him for some of those years and a couple of Free Agent years. Boras or no Boras. If not, Oh well. We have the Dude for the rest of this season and through 2013.
May 24th, 20091:27 pm
In JJ’s case, well, maybe we deserve to be fleeced, lol!
DOB mentioned last night he’s flying to San Francisco today and not covering the game…Carroll is on vacation so we have a guest leader today (so sorry, his name totally escapes me)
May 24th, 20091:28 pm
Uh-oh! I think those Eagles ate a turtle! It looks like there’s a turtle shell in their nest!
May 24th, 20091:29 pm
Ah, thanks! I did not know that. I just briefly scanned the Blog this morning, so I didn’t see it.
May 24th, 20091:31 pm
Actually, DOB said the new guy would be covering the game for the AJC, didn’t say he’d be on the blog. We’re probably on our own today.
May 24th, 20091:36 pm
Here we go…
May 24th, 20091:37 pm
Good start, JJ!
May 24th, 20091:38 pm
You’re right…not that I would blame new guy for not wanting to wade into the blog, especially if things don’t go so well
May 24th, 20091:39 pm
1 out down…26 more to go. : )
May 24th, 20091:41 pm
Nice work JJ
May 24th, 20091:42 pm
Nice 9-pitch inning for JJ.
May 24th, 20091:43 pm
Where in Louisville are you Louisville Brave?
KJ now leads the team in HR’s.
May 24th, 20091:44 pm
KJ seems to be warming up a little
Get KJ out of the lead…way to go, KJ!!!
Yeah…!!!! Kelly Goes Oppo…!!!! Love It….
Regessing to the mean?
May 24th, 20091:45 pm
Heath (Cleveland)…i live in the Highlands…u know something about the Ville?
Could it be? Could KJ be heating up?
May 24th, 20091:46 pm
Now that is exactly why KJ has been in the lineup all this time-he’s capable of going on a monster streak at any time. The more he wasn’t hitting the more chance there was that the next game would be the start of another 15-20 game hitting streak. I think we’re about to see it now.
Cool Louisville brave I live in the prospect area near westport road
TnBrian(taking DOB's spot today)
Seriously, the All-Star game isn’t for awhile and you guys are acting like it’s right around the corner. And for those asking for lineups…please. We have to go down to the clubhouse and by the time we get back up to the pressbox I’m getting bashed for not having the lineups ready for you whiners!
May 24th, 20091:47 pm
Not a good looking AB Garret, no it wasn’t.
Louisville Brave…I grew up next to Fort Knox…sister currently close to 31W and Gene Snyder. Most of family in Hardin/Meade County.
Heath (Cleveland)…i wasn’t saying What!?!?!?! to you asking me where I live in Louisville…that was my response to KJ going yard in the leadoff spot…just getting psyched!!!
There We Go B-Maccc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mac hits a jack.
That looked pretty good Mac!
Mac just crushed that
And now Mac. Can you say sweep?
May 24th, 20091:48 pm
And THAT is what was missing when McCann wasn’t in the lineup.
Commissioner that bat is corked!
Not that I don’t want many more runs, but I like JJ with a two run lead this early.
lol at tnbrian
May 24th, 20091:49 pm
Who would’ve Thought The lineup would be hittling like this Without Esco and Chipper
I think JJ is in the ice cream store again today. Good for him.
AN EXTRA-BASE HIT!!! A…A HOME RUN!!
May 24th, 20091:50 pm
while more runs are always welcome, JJ is one of the few pitchers I trust with a one run lead, let alone two
Coach (2010 or Bust)
May 24th, 20091:51 pm
Break out the brooms and enjoy the moment. Sweep, sweep, sweep!
May 24th, 20091:52 pm
phi with an early 1-0 lead…nym/bos in a delay.
We all know KJ is a streaky hitter – unbelievably good and unbearably bad, not much middle ground. It appears that he’s entered that unbelievably good streak.
WOW BRAVES !!!!!
MY LOVELY BRAVOS !!!!!!!!!
Are you happy McFANN?
I like seeing that from BMac a lot more than bunt singles!
May 24th, 20091:53 pm
I think that homer of Mac’s is as good as a double – I know you demanded him for a double this morning.
May 24th, 20091:54 pm
And yes, Kelly is strong. Standing next to him by the cage you wouldn’t think so, but he is. 407ft. blast the other way is very impressive.
make it a 2-0 lead for phi now…i hate to say this…. come on yankees.
May 24th, 20091:55 pm
cabravesfan – of course, as I typed that I was worried about jinxing him, so that double was my fault.
Come on, you know there is something thuroughly enjoyable about watching our power hitting catcher drop a bunt single down the 3rd base line
Paul …good stuff…the girl im seeing lives over there…have you ever eaten at Pizza by the Guy on Lyndon? I know it’s not in prospect but i get there via Westport Road…delicioso!!
Heath in Cleveland…good to know there’s some braves fans who are from these parts…i moved up here from atlanta a few years ago to go to medical school…i really like louisville…its a great city…has everything a cityboy needs
May 24th, 20091:56 pm
now we know where to direct our collective wrath
Wow…Garret Anderson loafs on another play in the outfield.
Probably a double anyways. But reminds me of a play when Jair was pitching last week, when he allowed a double that should have been a single.
Most lackadaisical attitude on the team, by far.
May 24th, 20091:58 pm
Okey, I think JJ took a bit too much ice cream. But he’d be okey.
May 24th, 20091:59 pm
Hell Yea!!! Nice DP!!!
May 24th, 20092:00 pm
Louisville Brave…actually, thanks to TBS and no close proximity of any other team (Reds 2 hours away), there are a lot of older Braves fans in the ‘Ville. Sad to say that might change now that TBS is “very funny” instead of carrying games…
Since you are in KY right now… GO BIG BLUE!
It doesnt matter how good Hernadez is at double A Mississippi as long as Bobby Cox is managing, and we have a another failed Great White Hope in the outfield. They shouldnt even mention it.
May 24th, 20092:01 pm
Very true, cabravesfan, but not as enjoyable as triples.
May 24th, 20092:02 pm
Josh H., Garret is a “Loafer” which I explained when the Braves signed him. So no surprise there…not easy to interview either, but he has been hitting the ball a bit here lately.
Chipper needs to sit every game. Let him tell it, he’s always hurt anyway. Fucin Glass piece.
Josh H – Most lackadaisical attitude on the team, by far.
Yeah, I agree….sadly. It’s a bit easier to stomach when we’re winning, but still ……
Josh H, I agree about G. Anderson. More effort in the field is needed. I can’t imagine Bobby hasn’t seen it. I remember being at the game many years ago when Andruw didn’t move on a liner in the gap and Cox immediately sent someone out to replace him. He has always demanded his players act like professionals. What is with Anderson anyway? If he doesn’t want to play ball anymore he should retire.
Good eye Jeffrey.
