Bay Area Steve, too funny man. However you’re on your own with the Whitesnake thing. Due to me only having the radio feed this year. My cable company pissed me off when I got my new house, so I’m not giving them any more money than I have to. Besides, I’ve got a busy schedule all summer, so I’m not sure it would be worth it. I used to enjoy DVR’ing the games and watching them later, but not so much anymore.

If the team is still in the hunt in August when my time frees up a bit, I’ll probably order Extra Innings at the break.

Anyhow, my point is, that I wouldn’t see whatever it is that you did. But in spirit I’ll be laughing.

Perhaps a “photoshopped” image of DOB wearing a Bon Jovi T-Shirt and a hat with the American Idol logo on it? Did I just “say” that outloud? Ooops.

PWHjort — I don’t have the paper with me, but if I remember, it enabled estimates to be made on the whole range of averages and at bats. How do you compare someone hitting .340 in 200 at bats with someone hitting .320 in 290? For me, its utility is evaluating young players in partial seasons, say, Josh Anderson, when he hit .294 in 136 at bats for us last year, compared to an alternative young player.

Again, a very interesting idea, but we already have tons of metrics like Runs Created, WARP, VORP, etc… that accomplish the same thing. I would like to see the paper though, because it does seem very interesting.

I’m with the people who say we need to give Frenchy more time. I think, as somebody else pointed out (KC?, that Frenchy’s EARLY success has brought on (rightfully or not) expectations that he just can’t duplicate this soon after the struggles last year caused him to change his approach at the plate. When he shows PATIENCE at the plate (first pitch swinging is not always bad, if the pitch is something he can handle), starts concentrating on hitting the ball to the opposite field, he seems to get more comfortable at the dish. Once he’s comfortable, it really seems like he starts hitting the ball hard to ALL fields.

I also think that his struggles are AMPLIFIED because of the need for us to have a big bat in the middle of our lineup, which is something most fans EXPECTED Frenchy would be from the moment he came up to “The Show” and had unbelievable success. If we had an Adam Dunn, Matt Holliday, or Jermaine Dye out in LF, and an Andruw Jones (the Andruw Jones that mashed the ball for a couple of years), I honestly believe our fan base would be more tolerant to having Frenchy in the bottom of the order, trying to do the little things he’s going to have to do in order for him to rebound the way we want him to. Just something to think about.

Savannah Guy,

Chewing gum is a distraction. Whether it’s conscious or not, your brain still has to focus on the act of chewing which means there’s less room for you to focus on other things. Plus, if you’re chewing while you’re batting, your head will move. It bothers me all the time when I see our players chewing gum.

I have to chime in on the gum chewing discussion. I chewed gum when I played. It does calm the nerves and I suppose it could be a distraction, if you constantly chewed, but its only natural that when a pitcher starts the windup you Stop chewing. Now, chewing tobacco is a different story.

PWHjort, I will try to post a link to it; as a member of the ASA I can get on-line access to journal articles. It is written in Bayesian Math: prior distributions, posterior distributions conditional on multivariate data, etc, etc.

Now, as we have opened that can (of corn), have you followed the math/stat arguements on the existance (or not) of streaks in professional sports? In the words of Keb’ Mo’: “that’s a whole nutha thing!”

Sabathia goes for the Yanks today against the Phillies. I hope he’s good. Wakefield against Tim Redding and the Mets, and the Braves got JJJ on the hill. If it plays out right, the Bravos should be tied with the Mets at the end of the day, a half game out of first. That would be nice.

Gotta have JJ in the AllStar game. I’d even pick him over Lowe and Vazquez just because hardly a person outside of Atlanta even knows he’s a pitcher. Imagine if he were in Boston/NY/LA/Chi. You know he’d have been in the ASgame last year.

DOB,

When we traded for JJ we thought he’d be a solid pickup. He has been pitching his tail off ever since he got to Atlanta. I know there has been some debate as to whether he was a front of the rotation starter or not. Based on what you see and hear do you think he is a number 1 or 2 or do you think he will come back to earth and be a solid number 3?

I remember being at the game many years ago when Andruw didn’t move on a liner in the gap and Cox immediately sent someone out to replace him. He has always demanded his players act like professionals. What is with Anderson anyway? If he doesn’t want to play ball anymore he should retire.
