Baseball is a funny game. And batting average sucks.
Schafer was 29-for-135 coming into tonight, for a .215 batting average. But his 25 walks brings his OBP up to a respectable .335 mark…league average and perfectly fine for a rookie center fielder playing good defense and hitting eighth.
Replace ten of Schafer’s walks with singles. He’d be 39-for-135 with 15 walks…for the exact same OBP of .335.
But because his batting average would then be .289, most people here then would like him and say he was doing good even though he’d really being doing exactly the same.
That’s carrying it a bit too far, man. Hits are more valuable than walks. How much quantitatively, I’m not sure (although I’m sure someone does) but I do think I recall KLaw saying 10%. Either way, if Schafer was batting .289 with an identical OBP, it wouldn’t be the same outcome. He’d be a more valuable player, and probably by more than you think. Oh, and those singles would show up in SLG% too, which we all know means something…
BA is still important, but just not the be all and end all that it used to be. OBP is a lot more important, but BA isn’t a stat to be laughed at as an archaic institution. It matters.
Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity
What I want to know is, what movie or tv show was this definition of insanity in recently? Because I’ve been reading and hearing that phrase everywhere the last few months and I’ve never heard it before and suddenly it’s the new “it” phrase. And yes, it’s annoying because anyone with any education beyond jr high knows that is not the definition of insanity.
Wow, just noticed that the Fish are now five games out- 3.5 behind the Braves. That was a rapid fall! Apparently, the “book” on them was pretty easy to put together.
Now take it the extreme. Take your .214 hitting guy with a .337 OBP and 25 walks in 160 plate appearances and compare him to a guy who hits .337 with a .337 OBP but who draws no walks in 160 plate appearances, and hits 25 singles instead of drawing 25 walks. Those 25 singles are worth 11.5 runs. Those 25 walks are only worth 7.5 runs. That’s a difference of 4 runs. Convert that to 640 plate appearances and the difference between the .337 hitter and the .215 hitter with the same OBP is a whopping 16 runs, and about a $7.74 million dollar difference in yearly salary on the free agent market. Still think OBP is the end all, be all and that batting average is not worth examining at all? (BH)
see Scoots we were right about preferring our OBP to be average driven. Dunn sux yup yup
Well, that was a scarey ninth… DOB, I like the emerging ststs on K-san. I still believe he will do well for us, once he gets used to American Baseball.
Here’s who can all go screw themselves according to Mitchell (last name to be named later… or never), and of course I’m refering to myself:
1. the home plate umpire who became a blind son of a bitch in the 9th inning… you suck, go to hell.
2. the Philadelphia Phillies for making me be happy that the Yankees won a baseball game and beat your sorry excuse for a closer’s ass… don’t ever do that again.
3. the Red Sox for losing to the Mets, again! Two days in a row. WTF? You suck.
4. the Blue Jays for tryin’ that 9th inning @!#$ again. Sweep.
RHR, 10:10 pm…’Doing the same thing … definition of insanity’
What I want to know is, what movie or tv show was this definition of insanity in recently?
From wikiquote…Rita Mae Brown, Sudden Death (Bantam Books, New York, 1983), p. 68….”Insanity is doing the same thing, over and over again, but expecting different results.”
The wiki says that this has been misattributed to Albert Einstein.
I generally don’t use wiki for primary source, but, hey, this is a blog. I’m not going to check out Ms. Brown’s book just to prove a point.
I don’t know why this has become so popular all of a sudden, since it’s been lurking since 1983.
I hear crow is quickly becoming an endangered species what with so many people eating it nowadays. I think we’re gonna have to cut back…especially if we want to save some for the rest of the people on the blog.
Hate to say it, but Tom Glavine didn’t look good at all tonight. For those of you who didn’t catch his rehab start on CSS tonight, Glavine gave up 5 H, 3 ER, 1BB and 1K in 3 IP. That doesn’t even tell the story though. There were a few other hard hit balls that just happened to be right at people. At times it was like he was throwing BP. I hate to say that but it’s true. I have TONS of respect for what Glavine has accomplished in his career, but I really think it would be in everyone’s best interests if he would just go ahead and retire.
I know it was hard to tell exactly how hard it was raining by just watching the game, but did anyone else think that by the eigth or ninth there should’ve been a rain delay? It looked to be pretty wet out there from here in Ohio…
Diory had nine putouts tonight, including two double plays. Folks from Cox to Lowe to Kelly Johnson praised the rookie’s performance in his first start.
Maybe the NL East is not so inferior to the vaunted AL East as says the conventional wisdom.
There are still lots more games to go, but if the Mets can play with the BoSox, the Braves should be able to as well.
I’m taking applications for someone to run over here and clean my house and finish my laundry before I go to bed tonight. Please make a nice single file line so nobody gets hurt.
Butter is my friend too, but only the kind that spreads easily when you take it out of the fridge so it doesn’t destroy your bread when you’re trying to make a grilled cheese…
Dr. Van Nostrand, you can’t write him off after 3 innings. That’s like people writing off Medlen after just one start.
People have been trying to bury the guy for months now. He’s just like Smoltz, they will go out when they are good and ready.
Rehab starts for veterans are about things like building arm strength and sharpening location. We know he can pitch already, it’s just a question of health with him.
Efrim, why can’t your boys throw the Canes a pity win? Playoff series are no fun when they’re swept…unless, of course, the Canes take out their frustration with a massive fight. That would be awesome.
EXCELLENT win tonight! All around. I do, however, agree with some of you guys, that Gonzo should be the 8th inning guy, and Sori should be the closer. Other than the homer that Sheffield hit off of him up in NY (and you just have to tip your hat at a great hitter for that), he’s been absolutely LIGHTS OUT so far. He looks far more composed, and just seems to shut the opposing hitters down every time he’s called upon. Gonzo is just as NASTY, but he’s been very inconsistent, and seems to give up at least one extra base hit every time out there. That is NOT a good thing when you consider some of the games he’s brought into save will be ONE RUN LEADS!!!
I still think Schafer should still be hitting leadoff (.210 or not), Escobar should be hitting 2nd, and both Kotch and Kelly should be hitting lower in the order, mixed around Jeff, or another right handed bat, and I still think GA should be hitting last in the lineup, his SINGLES power just don’t do anything for me, but I’ll take 5 runs in 3 games as long as 2 of them result in wins, just like they have!
Two back to back gut check performances by our Braves against a very talented Blue Jays baseball team. Chipper, Infante and Escobar are down for the count, and yet we still win.
This is baseball at it’s best. Unpredictable and totally refreshing. A sweep would be sweet.
The top two players who could help our offense.
Matt Holliday and Brad Hawpe. The first is a given that he will be traded. The second would require some cooperation on the part of the Rockies.
I hope KJ rides a long streak of good hitting into the summer to showcase him in a trade for a power bat to put in between CJ/Mac. I feel with his streakieness that Wren might feel more comfortable trading him than Prado. Prado hasn’t played full time in MLB yet, but he’s obviously more consistant with the bat. If JF can just keep his head above water I don’t see a chance he’s DFA or traded… hometown kid and all. Plus he’s a fan favorite, right?
I feel bad for Glav tonight. Gotta be tough being on the wrong end of “the dream”. I don’t care what you do in life, nobody wants to think they’re washed up/done/the old guy/the hanger on’er in their profession, no matter what it is. The age of the mind and the age of the body are generally never in agreement…and that’s too bad when your profession relies so much on the ability of your body.
Yes! Barbra was so beautiful in the movie. Did you see her nails? They were like butter! Butter! Like butter! Those legs in those sparkling stockings – again, butter! Welcome to “Coffee Talk”, the number is 555-4444.
Caller #3: Hello, Linda? I think Barbra should do a duet with Madonna.
Liz: Ech! I don’t like that Madonna – she’s a kulver! She’s a tramp! Every week with a different boyfriend! And this week, in the paper with no clothes on – ech! Who needs her?
Linda Richman: Still, that’s some body she has. You should have that body. Did you see her legs? They’re like butter! Like two sticks of butter lashed together in a roughhewn manner.
Linda Richman: Relax. Relax, darlin, we’re all mishputka. Alright. Well, that’s all the time we have this week. My name is Linda Richman.
Liz: And my name is Liz – of course, this is my mother. Barbra, we love you – hello, gorgeous! The movie was like butter!
kirkinga, I’m not writing Glavine off after 3 innings. I’m just looking at it big picture–considering what he’s done the last couple seasons (below league average pitcher), how he’s looked this spring and tonight, as well as factoring in what he’s bringing to the table in terms of stuff. Tonight he was topping out around 78-80MPH w/his fastball and he struggled often with location. Sure, he needs to build up more arm strength and get more work under his belt, but the signs, all things considered, aren’t giving a lot of reason for optimism. I’d LOVE to see him come back and hopefully help us to the playoffs, but realistically, I just don’t think he’s going to help us. If you look at it objectively and with your head and not your heart, I think you’d agree with me.
hear crow is quickly becoming an endangered species what with so many people eating it nowadays. I think we’re gonna have to cut back (Roman Gal)
it is perfectly permissible to substitute Raven or any other corvidae if the supply of crow runs short, which might easily happen if we win again tomorrow with the help of Casey or Kelly.
DOB, I’ve got a couple of guys I can think of off the top of my head, that could be perfect fits to trade for at the deadline this year. The two I immediately think of are Dye and Dunn, just because both of them are aging, cost around the same ($10M per), and are both legitimate power bats that play an OF corner position. Dye’s deal runs out after this year, while Dunn’s doesn’t run out until next year. While I think Dunn is a better option (partly because the Nats just fired Bowden, their GM, and they have a surplus of OF’s) because he has such an incredibly high OBP and his career OPS is over .900, I like the fact that Dye is a right handed bat and plays much smoother in the OF. What do you think it would require, prospect wise, to snag either one guys?
Anybody else, feel free to chip in, but I am looking for a REALISTIC guess at what they may cost. I, as much as anybody else in here, would love to throw Jo Jo, Carlyle, and Bennett out there and snag Adam Dunn, but I’d like to get a REALISTIC preview of what we may have to part with to get some pop in the OF.
RHR, 10:32 pm…”abwright – It must have been in a movie or on a tv show or a commercial lately. That’s where most Americans get their brilliant catchphrases.”
I’ve been hearing this one for about the last 2-3 years from internet savvy students. I think it’s just infected this blog recently. If it does have a source in a movie or tv commercial, it’s been a while. Maybe “IQ” in 1994?
“IQ” incidentally co-starred “Tim Robbins” who played “Nuke” Laloosh in “Bull Durham.” (That’s my vain attempt to relate this to a Braves baseball blog.)
I only ask this because I just read the blog you posted, DOB, showing just how pathetic our OF has been at hitting the little white ball over the fence, over the last year and 2 months. I already knew it was ugly, I just didn’t realize quite how ugly it really was!
Lowe had a funny quote about the rain, which they knew going in would probably start between 8 and 9 p.m.
“It started drizzling and it was like, ‘Here we go,’” Lowe said. “I’m used to it now. It rains. It rains ever day. I’ve talked to my California buddy about it [he glanced to Garret Anderson, dressing at the locker next to us as we interviewed Lowe]. It’ll rain again tomorrow.
“Too bad we’re in a drought.”
He smiled and added, “I’m calling B.S. on the drought.”
That Lowe stat isn’t correct, DOB. I don’t know what it’s supposed to be, but Lowe is not 19th on the all-time list in innings pitched. Maybe he’s 19th among active guys?
it is perfectly permissible to substitute Raven or any other corvidae if the supply of crow runs short, which might easily happen if we win again tomorrow with the help of Casey or Kelly
Hmm…if that’s the case, I don’t have to worry about it too much. But, there are plenty of pre-killed critters in south Georgia if we really start getting desperate.
Remember the teams of the 90’s that would hover like this at or around .500.they would be 20 -19 and then all of a sudden they would be 30-19.I feel it coming on just like the good ole days.GO BRAVES!!!!!!!!!!!
This marks the anniversary of the Brayan Pena DFA. Yunel was really just depressed and had been listening to Arsenio Rodriguez recordings all day. Cuban sammich anyone?
Dr. Van Nostrand, you left out that Glavine was hurt last season, and likely was also hurting at the end of his last season with the Mets. You also forgot to mention he lead the league in Quality Starts.
One rehab start, doesn’t tell us much of anything either way. It would’ve been great to see him have a better boxscore,, but that is not what he’s there for. Let’s see if his arm is ok and then go from there. I don’t expect so much from a guy’s first couple of rehab starts after being injured.
there are plenty of pre-killed critters in south Georgia if we really start getting desperate. (Roman Gal)
yumyum, loves me some good ol’ roadkill. Especially if it’s been out all day in the sun and got cooked just right.
Anybody ever read any of Carl Hiaasen’s novels set in Florida with the recurring character of an old demented ex-Governor of Fla who subsists on road kill? Crazy great books.
I hope KJ rides a long streak of good hitting into the summer to showcase him in a trade for a power bat to put in between CJ/Mac. Well that would certainly be the sign of a bad team: trade a hot-hitting second baseman who was top-tier offensively at his position the two previous years while simultaneously keeping Jeff Francoeur, whose career stats blow, around to make outs because he sells jerseys.
Just got in (soaked) from the Ted. Left side of the infield made all the plays tonight. Prado and Diory looked great. Pitching and defense. And Frency hitting the ball hard all four at bats.
We need some fine tuning, but we may have enough positives to contend for a playoff spot.
Jut got back from the game. Great game…crowd was into it. Gonzo wasn’t the only one that got boo’d. Moylan had quite a few boos up until the DP ball. We were all a little curious as to why Lowe was taken out..but it worked out in the end. Love the fact Lowe had two hits tonight and his first RBI-that was great!
Hmmm…Esco out. I was very upset. Love to watch him play. Interesting he doesn’t know how he did it. I have a theory-saw him going to his car last night with a girl in hand. Must have been a pretty good night
Anyway, Great Game! Go Braves, lets get the sweep tomorrow!!
If you Just Left The Braves Game…Why Aren’t You in Buckhead Right Now Getting Your Party On After a Dramatic Win…?
Too Bad I’m a little sick (It’s My Time Of the Month Righ Now) Otherwise I’d Be at Mood Lounge, Dreams, Opera, (You name It) Getting Silly Right Now…Especially after a win…
I know Braveheart isn’t aware of this but Garret Anderson is batting .350 in his last ten games. (COACH)
Nah, you’re wrong once again. Well aware of that. Also well aware that he has one double, no triples, no homers, no walks, no stolen bases, only 2 runs scored, only 5 RBIs batting in critical run production lineup slots during those 10 games while not bringing any value as a baserunner, and while playing horrid, half-arsed, disinterested defense.
kirkinga, Glavine had a 4.45 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and xERA of 5.41 in 2007. Last year was worse. So, you’re going to guess that he was hurting at the end of his last season with the Mets? Even if that’s true, you do realize that he needs further shoulder surgery and will be pitching with pain this year, right? Besides, if you look at Glavine’s splits from 2007, he was awful in Sept. (6.10 ERA, 1.52 WHIP), but he had ERAs over 5.00 in June and July of that year and he posted a WHIP of 1.45 or higher in each of the final 4 months of that season–hence the xERA of 5.41 in 2007.
Like I said before, I’m not basing my opinion on tonight’s rehab start alone. I’m factoring in what he’s done the past 2-3 years, this spring, tonight and projecting what he’s likely to do if/when he returns to the ATL active roster. I’d LOVE to be proven wrong in this case, but I’m not expecting Glavine to help us this season. We would be most likely be MUCH better off going with Medlen, Morton or Hanson in the fifth starter spot. If Glavine ends up proving me wrong, I’ll be very happy and I’ll come back here and take my medicine. But I really don’t think I’ll be put in that position.
We’ll see how the next two rehab starts go, but you’ve gotta believe the Braves are going to need to see better stuff from Glavine and better results before they put him on the active roster and kick in the first of his incentives. It’d be one thing if the Braves had no other options for that fifth starter spot. They most certainly have other, more promising, options, so Glavine will need to show that he’s capable of pitching better than he has since 2007. At least one would think.
Gonzo almost blew it, you could chalk it up to the rain but everyone else pitched pretty well in it, he did get sqeezed by the umps though. Good win, Frenchy looked as good tonight as he has all season. Maybe there is hope. GA was called by announcers a “professional hitter”, though it looks more and more like a professional “singles” hitter. I wish DOB would ask him where his power is, can he put a finger on it? Hey if he can hit .300 with a few doubles thrown in, what can you say?
Does anybody else wish they were as smart as Coach? He’s like, the King of right…and we’re all just peasants scrambling around. Trying to be as right as he always is.
When I saw a pre game interview with Medlen, I knew he was in trouble. He was visibly nervous for just an interview. Nervous as Barney Fife at a stakeout. Hopefully he has conquered that demon.
Read an interview with someone that worked on The Andy Griffith Show. Can’t remember who it was, but they said Don Knotts [Barney] and Andy Griffith were polar opposites from their characters on the show. When the camera wasn’t rolling, Andy was up pacing, nervous, smoking cigarettes. Don was very calm, would sit down and relax and watch Andy pace. Now that’s acting! For Knotts to do that. He may have won some Emmys for his Barney character. If he didn’t he should have. One of the most memorable characters in the history of television`.
To resond to a Blog this morning–You DON’T want Jeremy Hermida under ANY circumstances. He has morpher into a Punch and Judy opposite field hitter with virtually no power. I’m sure DOB will vouch that he is viewed as one–if not the WORST outfielders in MLB. Bad arm, bad instincts, bad routes to the ball, bad decision making. Who is the baseball coach at Wheeler High School?? I firmly believe the Underachieving Jeremy will soon be back at Wheeler as a fine Driver’s Ed instructor. There is still the matter of a college degree, but maybe an exception can be made for a guy who has misplayed more balls in 3 years than many have fluffed in 15.
Coach, I don’t think GA was a mistake as a signing considering the time, labor, monetary resources existent at the time of the signing in the FA market and within the Braves organization. As it has turned out, things haven’t worked out. Just because something doesn’t work out doesn’t make it a mistake at the time of the signing.
Wren thought he could hedge his bet with Frenchy, Diaz, and GA that he had 3 guys capable of OPSing between .750 and .800 and that with three of them, hopefully two of them would give the Braves that kind of OPS. What plagued them last year wasn’t that they didn’t have a big bat in left or right, but rather that they had got production from left and right that was so far below average for the expected value out of those positions. If Wren could just get two of Frenchy, Diaz or GA to be in the ballpark of average for a corner outfielder, the Braves would have gained about 50 to 70 runs above what they got from the corner outfielders last season.
BTW, I notice you haven’t said a damn word about Josh Anderson in quite some time. I was wondering why, so I took a look. .276, .329, .368 is Josh’s line. Batting .209, .261, .256 with 2 stolen bases in 17 games and 46 plate appearances since April 28th. That line is just as bad as Schafer’s (likely worse because he isn’t being exposed as much as Schafer) during that stretch and worse than Frenchy, Diaz, and GA during that stretch.
Had I not Been Getting Pregnant Pauses All Night I’d be Getting My Swerve On at a bar/club…Sipping On Tokyo Tea…
Pregnant Pauses Suck! Cheese-Whiz! I feel Like Crap…
I don’t Know why but I’m Listening To Umbrella “Ella Ella Eh Eh” I used to hate that song but It got Stuck in my head one day and I couldn’t get rid of it…
Jeffy Baby had a good game tonight. But only the morons and boot lickers would think Francoeur is fixed. The count down has begun for his ultimate release. I predict Jeffy will be given his outright by July 31st.
Guess we better start banking the paychecks on the balance of the $3.325 M.
Dr. Van Nostrand, fair enough. I thought there were some things worth mentioning about Glavine especially if we are going to mention the last two seasons, and that I find it hard to use this first rehab start for anything other than evaluating how his arm responds.
No I didn’t know that Glavine still needs another surgery, I seem to have missed that.I’m surprised it hasn’t been discussed more on the blog. Is this info that DOB provided for us.
To be clear, I’m not expecting a Cy Young performance, but I do expect Glavine to eat 6-7 innings /start with an ERA and WHIP somewhere close to league average, either slightly above or below. To have 5 starters that can give us 6+ innings/start is such a huge upgrade over last season when it seem getting to the 6th inning was a blessing.
I think I real difference is that I trust a 300 game winner more right now than any prospect. I know that’s not popular and everyone is eager to see Hanson, but I’d like to see him get in another full season in the minors. I’m a big believer that minor league innings help, not hurt young pitchers.
So we’ll see Hanson, and I hope Morton too who has kind of gotten lost but who I believe can be a solid mid rotation starter.
Micheal Hill, enjoy the month of May because our Braves will be four or five games over .500 by the end of the month. You see, I know these things. I also know that our Braves are scoring 4.61 runs per game in May, which is a huge improvement over the 4.06 per game in April but not nearly good enough to run with the big boys come June.
19 of the 29 games we play this month are against teams with a losing record, so we are supposed to be winning.
19 of the 26 games we play next month are against team with winning records. Those teams are called the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, Reds and Brewers.
Enjoy the moment my friends because that freight train is coming and we are going to get run over.
Nope I’m A dude…My Stomach has been playing with My Emotions all day…It has been Hurting like Hell, therefore I’ve been Getting Pregnant Pauses for the last 3 hours

The second would require some cooperation on the part of the Rockies.

kirkinga, I’m not writing Glavine off after 3 innings.

I, as much as anybody else in here, would love to throw Jo Jo, Carlyle, and Bennett out there and snag Adam Dunn, but I’d like to get a REALISTIC preview of what we may have to part with to get some pop in the OF.

kirkinga, Glavine had a 4.45 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and xERA of 5.41 in 2007.

Who is the baseball coach at Wheeler High School?? I firmly believe the Underachieving Jeremy will soon be back at Wheeler as a fine Driver’s Ed instructor.

Speaking of fluffers

Nighty night ladies.

kirk,
You honestly expect Glavine to pitch 6-7 innings a start? Are you quite mad?
You are.
Quite.

I agree!! However my bf doesn’t always think so. He thinks I am a little too involved. But hey…I am a die hard Braves Fan and I stick with my team through the worst of times and the best of times. Heck, I’m a Miami Dolphins fan so I KNOW the worst of times (2007)
Gonna call it a night. Good night everyone!

The Braves will get a big bat as long as the pitching continues like this.
