Rob Fron SC agreed, K-Fer Is killing us in the 8 hole…Put him at leadoff when he can bunt more and drop KJ to 6th or 7th since he is hitting the ball with authority but he has no one to drive in…
I wonder if DOB or Ms Rodgers can do a story as to whether or not Anderson’s level of effort on defense is an issue on the team.
That timely subject may be delved into after, as Lew pointed out, the BABIPWCG story is fully explored, quantified, qualified, parsed and dissected by baseball experts and blog statisticians. Along with yours truly, Roman Gal already has it right… chewing gum while batting is a distraction.
As the controversial chewing while batting (CWB) subject reaches a crescendo with fans demanding the truth and sports writers clamoring for the cause and effect, Mr. O’Brien will have already properly researched and written the expose that will pop the bubble of secrecy. He’s probably holed up as we speak, searching through old batting charts and game videos for clues.
The ‘chewing gum while batting’ effect’ is an age-old, sticky baseball issue never before explored or addressed in any baseball news venues. There may be a cover up. Maybe the Tops or Wrigley corporations have been bribing reporters all these years to keep their secret under wraps, who knows? Regardless, breaking that story could change the course of how chewing gum is used during the game of baseball. Could give some early converted non gum-chewing teams a distinct advantage. Breaking the story could lead to a Pulitzer… or maybe even a Wurlitzer.
How is it we manage to make some of the most PEDESTRIAN starting pitchers, like Scott Richmond, look like the second coming of Nolan Ryan?
And here we go again, letting the Jays show us how to play ABC baseball, as they’ll get their SECOND run in that way, while Frenchy wails away on the first pitch with runners at 2nd and 3rd and ONE out.
I paused to think about the job FW has done, and he really has improved our pitching. But what he was thinking when he thought that all our offense needed was Garret Anderson? Ours, is an offense that has been streaky the last couple of years, has no power, and no speed. Any idiot would have realized that we would struggle to score runs. FW needs to get 1-2 bats now, not wait until the trade deadline and see, but now. The only reason we are only 1.5 games out is 2 fold…1. Our pitching is great! 2. The entire NL east has struggled to find a rhythm. We need help now. My call would be for 1-2 new players, preferably a speed guy and a big bat to fill either corner OF position or 2nd base (then you could move KJ to left if you keep him).
Dammit Tie Game! Man the Jays Are Executing on offense…! If only we did this in the bottom of the fourth…That Inning where we didn’t score with runners on second and third and 1 out might cost us the game
This offensive inning by the Jays (top of the 6th), is the PERFECT example of what Terry Pendleton should be FORCING our hitters to do. Hell, TP, if you can’t figure out the best way to tell them, just make them all watch this inning! PATIENCE at the plate, is all the hitters have shown at the plate, to get JJ’s pitch count UP, as well as allowing them to lay off all the GOOD pitches he’s thrown, and take advantage of some of the ones JJ’s been forced to throw once he’s behind in the count.
Coach, what’s your BIG BAT gonna do for you that you believe will so dramatically change things? Win some one run games that you lost is about all you could argue. Adding an All Star bat, which would be a 5 Vorp kind of player would only be worth an additional .3 runs a game over Frenchy or GA. Thus, pretty much every 3 games, this All Star bat would make a difference by adding an extra run. We’ll ignore that there is no promise that the extra run would be provided in a one run game for the sake of doing so. We’ll pretend that those extra .3 runs per game are evenly distributed once every three 1 run games. Thus, every three 1 run games, you’d be assured of an extra run that would merely tie one of those 3 one run games. In that one game of the three that you are assured of a tie, you are merely assured of about a 50/50 chance of winning that tied game. Thus, of those three one run losses, you’d be assured of gaining only about .5 wins over what you would have otherwise had. The Braves currently have 6 one run losses. This big All Star 5 Vorp bat would have only made sure that the Braves were 1-5 in one run losses instead of 0-6. Over the course of 162, that would be worth about 3 or 4 extra wins over Frenchy or GA, or the same difference you could have by having a big arm as the fourth starter instead of Kawakami, and by having Kawakami start as the fifth starter instead of Glavine, Hanson, Morton, Reyes, Medlin, et al.
It’s hard enough to make it to the majors is it not? When you see players modifying their swings we are usually talking about great hitters who need to make adjustments due to age or injury. With Francoeur we are talking about a so-so hitter (as far as his approach) who is modifying his swing TO EVEN REMAIN IN THE MAJOR LEAGUES. So what are the chances of anyone with his skills, modifying his swing, that he is going to remain a productive hitter at the major league level?
Plus, if that wasn’t bad enough, I don’t think that even in his prime that he is good enough for a right fielder. His OPS is mediocre. His first year is the only season he has broken the .800 OPS barrier and .500 slugging.
So the fact that he was never good enough in the first place, he has fallen so far that he is perhaps the WORST right fielder in the major leagues, and he has modified his swing and still hasn’t produced, who in the their right mind would think that he is going to “come back”??? Can he hit 30+ home runs? Can he hit .300? Can he get a better than .800 OPS??? Can he walk more than 20 times in a season????
So if you are all looking for him to have stats that come in between his best and 2008, that’s not good enough. Trade him.
Ok BOBBY, why NOT pinch hit for GARRETT with our lefties killing part of the PLATOON here? Diaz CRUSHED this guy Friday night!!!! Garrett crushes NOBODY!
Braveheart…only 1 major flaw in your arguement from my perspective…I would argue that there would be significantly more than 1 run every 3 games added. When looking at, say, Rios, compared to Franceour…Rios is MUCH more likely to have productive outs…move a guy over, sac-fly for a run (today would have been nice, huh?). It isn’t all about the higher .BA or HR totals…it’s about being a “BETTER” hitter.

The point is that you could go either big bat or big arm. It’s not a black or white issue. Yes, a big bat would be worth it if it made a 3 or 4 win difference, just the same way that a big arm could make the same win difference.
I see what Braveheart is saying. I’m not advocating going after Cain, because he’ll probably require a boatload of talent that I don’t wanna give up, but if he’s going to have a big impact on our club, then it would obviously be a good pickup. And if we’re gonna go after an aging corner outfielder with a big contract (Lee, Maggs) while still giving up talent, wouldn’t Cain be a lot more attractive since he has this year and two more years on his contract?

Adding an All Star bat, which would be a 5 Vorp kind of player would only be worth an additional .3 runs a game over Frenchy or GA. Thus, pretty much every 3 games, this All Star bat would make a difference by adding an extra run.
Folks if that sounds like bulls**t to you, that’s because it is. No made up mathematical equation can predict the future, much less how some unknown player is going to play after switching teams. This is all stuff people like to “get into” so they can pretend they know more than the poor dumb slobs that don’t believe.
As the old PE song goes..”Don’t Believe The Hype, It’s A Sequel”
Man oh man. Hope Medlen comes back strong in SF. For the kid’s sake of course but also because if Glavine can return to the rotation we may need Medlen’s arm out of the pen. The Big Aussie just doesn’t have it yet.
Why The F… Is Moylan still “Bobby’s” 7TH inning Man…After Moylan F’d up the Third game of the season he should’ve known that Moylan can’t take that role coming off of surgery last year…

thb the best of one scenario and the worst of another. a pitcher, any pitcher will not make that big of a difference with this club, this year. Only an improvement in runs scored will

This is all stuff people like to “get into” so they can pretend they know more than the poor dumb slobs that don’t believe.

is better cheaper out of the line up, i like matin prado playing more often. you can see the youth when he runs, and even when he hits the ball.

Braveheart = being a complete retard today.
Our rotation now has 23 quality starts. We have 21 wins. Our offense is still half a run off last seasons pace.
It’s not rocket science.
