Can we say Medlen had the first game jitters tonight? Let’s not write him off just yet. And as for the slam, well Parr gave Helton something good enough to hit out in a pitchers park, and some want to say it was Francoeur’s fault he didn’t jump high enough to catch it. It could be true, but nobody should have any illusion that Parr gave up the hit, and it DID go over the fence.

“sometimes we forget that braves are in a rebuilding the team.” braves 2009

HOGWASH! BS! Nope. Not buying it. Not for one second.

Teams that are rebuilding, do NOT trade a top 100 prospect for an 11.5 million dollar per season pitcher with only two years on the contract remaining. A rebuilding team does NOT give out a 4 year 60 million dollar contract to a 36 year old pitcher. A rebuilding team doesn’t give out a 24 million dollar contract to a guy that has NEVER pitched an inning in the US. A team that is rebuilding does not bring in Garret Anderson to play LF.

If this team was rebuilding (like the 87-90 Braves), the rotation when spring training ended, would have been JJJ, Morton, Jo-Jo, Hanson and Medlen. Or something along those lines. Josh Anderson and Schafer would have BOTH made the roster, and we would be taking our lumps watching them “grow”.

Rebuilding teams don’t go after the likes of AJ Burnett and Rafael Furcal, and pin their hopes on Ken Griffey Jr. Nor do they give extensions to their aging HOF 3B.

Nope. Wren truly thought he was building a winner for this year.

Please don’t use the “rebuilding” word again until it’s actually happening and Wren acknowledges that its happening.

“A team that is rebuilding does not bring in Garret Anderson to play LF”

Seems a bit of an over statement. Rebuilding teams wouldn’t shy away from paying $2 million to a fading out fielder…

I agree though, this team is not “rebuilding” in the traditional sense. The aim was to compete this season, but also be in great shape to dominate in 2010… we’ll see if it works out that way. Prospects are pipe dreams until they prove it in the majors.

Quite a vengance by the Rockies today. Looks like Buddy Carlyle, Jeff Bennet, James Parr, and Jo-jo Reyes missed damage control 101……….. I can live with Bennet, but not the others. Release them, trade them, or send them to the minors, and call up Tommy Hanson, move Medlen to the bulpen, and activate Jorge Campillo.

Offcourse it isn’t that easy. They don’t want to callup Hanson just to send him back when Glavine gets healthy. Campillo is on rehab. And Knowing Boby Cox who has tooooo much patience if you ask me, that won’t happen. The Braves also have Manny Acosta and Boone Logan.

The truth is apart from Eric O’flaherty, Rafael Soriano, Mike Gonzales, and Peter Moylan their other relievers are just awful.

N8

Tennessee Paul, you’re right. The money isn’t out of line. But a truly rebuilding team would go with Brandon Jones in LF (until the other guys are ready to come up), or use a veteran already on the team. Like Diaz or Norton.

But a rebuilding team doesn’t need a 34 year old 2 million dollar LF. However a contending team looking for a cheap platoon partner, or bench option does. Which is what Wren thought he was getting.

But you’re right, out of all the examples, G. Anderson is the easiest one to deal with. But essentially dropping 34.5 million dollars into 3 new members of the rotation does NOT constitute rebuilding. Most rebuilding teams barely have more than that in their entire payroll (see Twins, Marlins, D-Rays, Royals, etc….)

i hear you, DOB, but it’s still pretty bad. and i think you’re gonna see in the coming months that it’s worse than you guessed. infante was practically our best hitter. if his loss is not as significant in anyone’s mind, it might be because he was undervalued and underplayed, and far too often left to linger on the bench. which, looking at this team, makes no freakin’ sense.

Ok Cook is not that great of a pitcher, AT ALL. Maybe In the Top 25 of the National League MAYBE. A shutout is absolutly inexcusable. Bobby needs to do something like when the next person who grounds out more than 1 time in a game he gets benched for 3 days.

We are SOOO lucky Peavy turned down the trade to the Braves. What a twit! And the package the Braves were supposedly offering was way more IMO than anything the Cubs or White Sox offered. I’m tired of hearing about him. Hope he enjoys losing 100 games again…

gotigers72

May 21st, 2009

Parr – 0-0 – 5.79 ERA – 17 hits allowed in 14 innings
JoJo – 0-2 – 7.00 ERA – 6.09 ERA career in 40 games
Medlen – 0-1 – 15.00 ERA – 5 walks in 3 innings – Braves supposedly liked him because he throws strikes – Yeah, right.

These are 3 AAA pitchers that have been brought up to the big club while their consensus best minor league pitcher, Hanson, languishes at Gwinnett. Why? So his arbitration clock won’t start? Are they serious about winning now? If so, an arbitration clock should not enter into the equation whatsoever.

Is Wren some kind of super retard? Trading Josh Anderson, signing a DH, G. Anderson when he knows he has been a DH, but will now have to play in the field, signing a Japanese pitcher without ever seeing him pitch against major leaguers, the worst trade ever, in the history of baseball, the Teixeira trade. Trading for him while knowing his agent is Boras and you probably won’t be able to keep him more than a year. Giving 5 uber prospects, 3 of whom are now playing on the ML level while another [Feliz] is probably the best of the 5. Womder why they ran him out of Baltimore now?

You BC haters can continue to diss Bobby, but he can only play with the players that he is given to play. Wren is the one responsible for the recent woes of the Braves. They need to run him out of the A-T-L NOW before he makes any other horrendous moves!

I can’t pretend that the blog is much fun anymore with all the so called “fans” of the Braves acting like raving idiots every time the Braves lose. I will say that I bet that not a single one of the most vocal and acidic protesters every played organized baseball in High School or College.

Baseball simply is not a day or night game. Hitters who lead MLB in average fail 65 to 70% of the time. The best pitchers rarely win more than 67% of their games. Nobody plays a season without errors in the field.

And most importantly, the winner of the NL East this year will probably win about 88 games this year. That’s out of 162 or 55%. That means the best team will win one more game than they lose every 10 games.

gotigers72 decent post. Except Wren was NOT responsible for trading FOR Tex. He was however responsible for getting what we got for him (Kotchman).

Also, he was VERY responsible for trading for JJJ and Gorkys for Renteria.

The Kawakami one is the one that kills me. He wouldn’t pay 5 million dollars for the possibility of 3 months of Smoltz. But had no problem shelling out 24 million over 3 years for a guy that NEVER pitched over here.

No excuse for that. If you’re the Yankees or Red Sox, you can afford to take the “hit” on that deal. But that deal might go down as worse than the Hampton deal. At least we got two good years out of Hampton.
