Okay, that was surreal. I paused my Tivo and I’m sitting here watching the bottom of the 4th on the edge of my seat with runners at second and third and Wright at the plate. Damn, wild pitch! Come on JJ, get him.
And as this is happening I logged onto the Braves ajc page and with one glance was relieved to see that JJ, not surprisingly, got out of it. And upon flipping back to the game I strike three on the outside corner. And yet it was sort of disappointing at the same time it was relieving. Imagine that.
But it was weird and awesome and I think it really makes for a great story as in the one I just told.
Of course the downside being the Braves not scoring in the top half when I was so sure they would.
The end. Don’t tell me what happens. Kelly just made the last out, I’m going to fast forward.
With all the extra ‘work’ Brian McCann’s supposedly been doing in the off-season, you’d think that he would have come up with a way to block a ball to his right. He simply isn’t a very good defensive catcher.
Occurs to me, with the comment that the stadium security folks are reluctant to ‘grab’ a nekkid streaker, maybe they ought to publicize that certain of the security people will be equipped with tasers (sp?)…I think that would tend to hurt.
That big park has to favor the Braves (who can’t really hit ‘em out of small parks). Anyway, Garret’s not the most exciting player in the game, but he’s doing a lot of things right. Good at-bat there to get the run home.
Stupid field dimensions…something people rarely discuss with record books (like Maris hooking the ball down the RF line).
Or people subtracting 10 feet from their current launching pad (old Busch Stadium) by doing a few extra cycles in the offseason. McGwire’s swing sucked. Bonds hit jacks (about 20 less a year) when he was skinny, but he still had a good, short swing capable of some damage.
BigMac was a men’s league softball player that took Roids in the 80s and switched to HGH in the mid-90s.
Now he’s rich and hits golf balls 600 feet all day long in the desert. I don’t think he cares much about his legacy.
I’ve held it for as long as I can. How can MLB let the mets have a brick backstop and a concrete cap block on top of the brick? I openly wondered how the Brewers could have left the same type of situation, only down the left field line, that ended M. Diaz’s year. Remember, he made a sliding catch into the wall in foul territory that resulted in season ending surgery.
This is an accident waiting to happen behind home plate though. And a NY lawyer is no match for McFann if BMac gets hurt.
DOB – Not only is the park huge, but I heard the physical location yields some pretty dead air there. It’s amazing what a park instantly becomes known for (for better or worse), and teams spend 100M – 3B to build the parks with all the accessories and glitz.
Most people will recall a field first if it’s a ‘launching pad’ (Coors, Wrigley, Fenway, US Cellular). How could the Yankees not account for ball flight before building that shopping mall?
mbatl, I was just thinking the same thing about Anderson. He won’t do anything exciting which is why he doesn’t get the attention like others that put up his kinda numbers, but he seems to always be there when you need him.
Another thing on JJ… everybody in baseball will know his name when this season is done, maybe before that. Some stat geeks will ignore him because he doesn’t K a ton of guys, but dude can flat out shut down any team with that stuff.
The Braves starting pitching is working on it’s fourth straight quality start, not to mention possibly winning four straight games for the first time this season.
Georgetown the only way I could that is possible is if you get a single and try to stretch it out for a double and get thrown out. You get the hit, but Im not sure if it would count for OBP.
P.S. I have no idea what Tennessee Paul was referencing. I just got on a little bit ago.
Frenchy is struggling a little bit, looks like he’s searching again. As I type this, he hit a rocket to Wright.
At any rate, would be nice if Frenchy went back to what he was doing a couple of weeks ago, BUT…. as long as Shafer is in the lineup, Frenchy doesn’t seem to be that much of a problem.
Ok, Ok, I get it, we don’t criticize out pet players. Makes us a traitor, or unAmerican, or un-homey, or something. Let me say it a clearly as I know how. I love the way the kid swings the bat. He’s as good at getting the fat part on the ball as anybody you’ll see, and the best hitting catcher in MLB, and that includes the guy in Minnesota…it’s just that he’s not, by any means, ‘good’ defensively…passable yes, but not ‘good’. He doesn’t block balls well and has only an average arm. He’s not even the best defensively on our team – he’s probably third best, at best. How’s that for a precipice?
Very tricky bounce off that section of the wall. Looked like it would carom at an ngle, but it hit that support post and kicked back straight, got Francoeur turned around. Would’ve been a double if it had bounced like it looked like it would. Instead, a trip.
CANNON THROW BY SCHAFER as a typed that above. Wow, what a play.

“you want to explain how that is possible?” – GeorgetownBrave
It’s possible, just not very common. A guy with very few walks, and a decent number of sacrifice flies, can achieve that unusual distinction.
An example stolen from some website: “if a player has 2 hits in 6 at bats with a sacrifice fly, his batting average would be .333, but his on-base percentage would be .286″
