mets fan in atlanta, my advice to you: forgetaboutit!
We’ll see what happens tomorrow.
Regarding your comment, “increased focus and concentration”, I would have to agree.
Something completely lacking throughout our last homestand and especially the two games against your boys at the Ted.
It feels good to see them play up to their capabilities. Also Lowe gets the most run support. If we had Jurrjens, who is better than Lowe in my opinion, going tonight we might still be playing.
You might notice I’m being rather amicable tonight. Beating the Mets is always nice but this one was about shutting up every ESPN talking head who never even considered we might beat the invincible Johan.
Scioscia may be the most underrated manager in the league…can you think of another that has been with their team as long as him, been as successful, and gets less attention? Even here in Southern California he is totally overshadowed by Joe Torre- and he is just as good of a manager in my opinion (CBF)
He has good points but I really hate his approach to offense, way too impatient. That’s ok if you have a Vlad who can hit anything, but otherwise not a good approach and their offense is usually average at best.
Sometimes I don’t think people give D. Lowe enough credit. To me, one of his biggest attributes is that he seems to thrive in the pressure situations. He closed out a WS for the Sox, he dominated down the stretch last year for the Dodgers and already this year he has had two such performances in big games. (The opener in Philly and tonight against Santana.) I know at times this year he hasn’t been that efficient and has grinded through some games but he definitely doesn’t shy away from a challenge. That is what I want and like PWHjort was saying yesterday, having the label as an “ace” really doesn’t mean that much because there are so few true ones. I am also proud of the lineup for having nice at bats early on. They drove up Santana’s pitch count and got into the middle relief before the Mets could use Putz and K Rod. Very nice to win like that on national TV. Hopefully we can have a similar approach tomorrow night and finish with similar results.
Umm, corkylikesbeer, check the stats…USC finished #2 overall in total defense…gave up 9.0 points a game, 14 total touchdowns (only 6 passing and less then 5 yards per completion), less then 4 yards a play and less the 222 yards average per game in a very offensive conference…I agree that most of the pac-10 defense sucked, but give credit where it is due, dude
Diaz’s .556 average (10-for-18) against Santana is the second-highest for any player in at least 10 at-bats against him, behind Cristian Guzman’s .571 (8-for-14).
I said it yesterday and I said it today. Lowe vs Santana was going to come down to defense, not offense. And it did. Just cause are team can field the ball slightly better doesn’t mean we don’t desrve credit for beating Johan. I mean the Braves made solid contact.
We got frickin 7 hits off him. He hadn’t given up that many all year, and considering our offense “stinks” according to the national media that’s pretty darn good for 6.1 innings. He did strike out 6 but when we give you Diaz, Schafer, Frenchy and the pitcher I mean COME ON.
Winterville, a lot of people don’t realize that Lowe got the win in each of the Red Sox’s series-clinching victories in 2004 — division series, ALCS and World Series.
nolie— I think another reason Scioscia doesn’t “get his due”, is because of that division. Every year the Angels are expected to win, and they do. No surprise. No praise.
Lot of optimism in that clubhouse after this one. I asked Lowe about the 5-1 trip and he said this was what a lot of people, the Braves included, had been waiting to see from this team.
And he said he likes their chances to win this series, particularly with “our best pitcher going tomorrow.” Those were his words about Jair Jurrjens.
Lowe said he loved facing guys like Santana, because you knew every pitch could decide the game. He said Santana is one of, if not THE, best pitchers in the game. “He’d rather get a root canal than give up an earned run,” Lowe said, adding that it was amazing that Santana wasn’t 7-0 with that ERA.
no doubt the bottom of the sec is better then the bottom of the pac-10 (we completely BLEW OUT wazzu last year, 69-0 and actually dropped in the standings) but that does not mean USC is not one of the elite teams in the nation- we can only beat the teams we play (including a complete trashing of #1 ohio state)
uga-brave, did you even watch the game or did you just have to chime in with, “we have no self-esteem”,ESPN is not anti brave” BS! If you actually observe and notice their tone of voice when we starting blowing the game open, or actually when we actually did something positive. All they could harp on was how we have no speed, would have an impossible time playing station to station throughout the season, and constantly nit pick at anything they could find on the Braves. The Mutts on the other hand…
Yea that’s what I mean. He’s been doing this for some time now. When his sinker is on, he’s tough to beat. I wanted him ever since he almost no hit us last year out in LA. We didn’t have to give up any prospects and he will cost about the same as someone like a Peavy or even less than a Burnette.
Just looked it up. It says 53. And not only that, they are leading the majors in steals by a HUGE margin (nearly twice as many as third place and 16 more than second place.) —TennPaul
and this is so important cause they are almost undefeated and leading their division because of all those stolen bases and EL’s RBI? Oops, not so. turns out they have a worse record than the Braves and are 4th in their division. Hmmm.Coach is gonna be devastated.
DOB — that was the trivia question tonight on the Mets tv broadcast. BTW, I hear a lot of announcer knocking tonight. I thought the Mets announcers did a very good job. You could tell they were Mets, but it wasn’t bad at all.
I love how much D Lowe suppots JJ…good to see this team playing so well on such a big road trip…at the start I would have been overjoyed with a 5-3 record- now that we have already won 5 I want more!
Guys,
The Braves have NO ACE. They suck. The Mets are better because they have an ace. Might as well go ahead and put the rings on the Mets fingers. They have a real ace. The Braves have no real ace. Isn’t that what makes a good team? An ace?
Whether with the Minnesota Twins or the Mets, Santana’s results against the Braves have usually been similar: He pitches splendidly, the Braves win.
His Braves counterpart always rises to the occasion, going toe-to-toe with Santana. Lowe was the latest to do the trick, allowing two runs and five hits in 6-2/3 innings to win his fourth consecutive start.
Lowe didn’t give up a hit until Carlos Beltran’s two-out single in the fourth, the second ball hit in the air in fair territory by the Mets.
Beginning with Damian Moss (remember him?), who threw seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball to beat Santana and the Twins in 2002, every Braves pitcher who has faced Santana through the years has answered the challenge.
Tim Hudson gave up just two runs in 15-1/3 innings of two starts against him in 2007 and 2008, and John Smoltz threw five scoreless innings of two-hit ball to beat Santana in the first week of the 2008 season.
Even injury-plagued Mike Hampton was healthy enough to go toe-to-toe with Santana last September, pitching six innings of two-hit ball in a Braves win. Santana gave up two runs in seven innings that day.
All in all, his teams have scored a total of five runs in the 39 innings that Santana has been in six games against the Braves.
cabravesfan— nothing bad, just a word here and there (Tomaawkin-). I’m just having a little fun with you, that’s all. However, when I saw CorkyLikesBeer’s post, I thought, uh-oh, here we go.
Tom on your 11:04 post the reason I cant stand Anders is if someone has a bad game he was suddenly right however if they are doing great he never brings it up.For example remember back in ST when Soriano wasnt sure if he was going to be ready, for 2 straight weeks Anders talked how he was amazing because he called it when the Braves gave him that contract. However, he has been nearly lights out since the season started and I have yet heard Anders bring it back up.
Only one dump left in the division now, the lovely Landshark Stadium. (I can’t even write that with a straight face). When I first heard last week they were changing the name from Dolphin Stadium to Landshark Stadium, I swear I thought it was a joke.
Anyway, four nice parks and that place in the division. Pretty cool. When I started covering ball about half the stadiums were weak, now only a few are. Most people play in plush palaces now, real ballparks. This place (Citi Field) is nice.
In our division I like Philly’s park more, other than the dimensions.
It’s monday and I haven’t been paid in over a month…just woke up feeling crappy and the day didn’t get much better (although a Braves win helped a little)
With the mets not scoring any runs and makin costly errors behind santana it tells me the mets are primed for another CHOKE filled season!By the way mets fans, I’ll take our thirty-seven year old third baseman over your highly overated phenom defensively and offensively any day!wright and reyes looked like bevis and butthead tonite
Eric… That’s interesting. The next time he shows up and you’re here, why don’t you confront him with that? You probably know most of the bloggers better than I do. Haven’t been around it all that long.
I am happy we didn’t get Hampton, just because he is doing well, how do we know he wouldn’t be sitting on the bench if he were with us. He didn’t produce for us when he was with us so why take that chance and resign him. Then Wren got desperate and signed Kawakami, who is really not that great. He should do bullpen work and we should bring up Hanson, and we should definately send Reyes somewhere since he can’t ever win.
Yea, I didn’t mean to start a Preseason College Football War Up in here…I was indirectly bashing BSPN on how they think The Pac Ten, The Big 12 And The Big East can F…k with the SEC…
Kris Medlen is dominating at AAA … and he’s doing it consistently. You could make a pretty solid case that he should be in Atlanta’s rotation right now.
DOB—Landshark Stadium? Are you kidding me? When I first started reading your post, I thought, what’s with Dave and his nicknames for stadiums in Florida (Dark Star)?
Today, I spent the better part of my day on a braves blog talking smack about the braves, saying they didnt have a chance against our unbeaten ace and making fun of how their star 3B is washed up but they cant win without him. Tonight, the braves made my mets look like clowns. On their 1st visit to our new park. Against our unbeaten ace. Without their star 3B. FML.
You haven’t been paid in a month? What’s up with that? Yeah, I can understand why that would put you in a crappy mood. If that happened to some people, they’d show up for work with an assault rifle.
DOB, I agree with Lowe. Jurrjens is our best pitcher. Derek sucks but comparison. Smile… as Carroll would say.
My only thought about Santana is that he gets far more benefit of the doubt than any pitcher in the league. Guys like Jurrjens don’t get any press becuase ultimately his record is not great nor was it last year. He gets no run support but nobody takes it upon themselves to say that in spite of that he’s a great f***ing pitcher.
Santana loses and ESPN and the like can’t seem to accept it. They just talk about why he should have won. Nobody else gets away with that. Had everything (and I mean everything: run support, errors, blown saves) gone in his favor last year, JJ could have won 20 games.
I just think if he (Santana) loses, it should be a loss not some excuse.
Those were two excellent points on your 11:56 post. Especially the second one. So when are you supposed to get paid? Do you have enough saved to pay your bills? I’m not going to have to float you a loan, am I?
Got to take in the afternoon game at Gwinnett today. Medlen was extremely impressive. Looks like a batboy but he clearly knows how to pitch. The ballpark is very nice.
I hope to be paid this week but if not, I will join the ranks of the unemployeed (by choice- it is truly sad whe I can make more money off unemployment then I can at my full time job) but if you want to float a loan, I will not objcet
was pretty sure we’d beat him again and so we did. Also I called it before the game although I have not yet received the credit I so richly deserve. MITCHELL
that’s because you are such an obnoxious little twit. Everybody knows that Mitchell sucks.
cabravesfan, make sure you can collect if you quit. In NY, if you quit your job, you can’t collect unemployment insurance. That is, unless you can show them, at a hearing, that you had no choice. I guess not getting paid is a pretty good reason to quit.
Give Anders and Mets fan in Atlanta a break. They’re alright. You can pee on all the rest of the Mutts trolls for all I care, but Anders and Mets fan in Atlanta are legit.
uga-brave, I didn’t say that wasn’t accurate, but the timing of those comments came when we started scoring. Of course, they praised the Mutts up until that point. That’s all, just the timing and tone they used.
The unbemployment rate in CA as of April was 11.2%, 4th highest in the nation…they are not too picky about paying benifits (aside from the fact that the state is broke, of course)
Well- officially I am making 32,000 a year…if you can double that I will be on the next plane (how do you feel about 3 legged dogs? She’s part of the deal)
Tom O’Hawke,
You’re probably right, but I couldn’t convince him that it’s more important to have a good starting staff from top to bottom than it is to have an ace. I don’t think I’m close to the best convincer (made up word) in the world, but if I can’t get through to you on something as straightforward and seemingly obvious as that, you lose points.
the announcers are calling out the Mets on their attitude and desire so don’t say they are picking on the Braves!
yeah, but the espn announcers spent the whole bottom of the 9th talking about the mets as they were getting beat 8-3, and hardly said anything about the team that beat them, and pulled within 1.5 games. baseball tonight did a better job, but you can tell when you listen to those espn guys that the mets are the focus.
I am surprised no one on this blog responded to the Metrosexual Man a hour ago ! He said the Braves didn’t have an ace on the pitching staff !! Well, You are right Metrosexual Man……. We have four !!!!!!!!!! 1.D. Lowe 2.Jair Juirgens 3.T.Hanson 4.J.Vasguez ! Thank you very much !!!!!
not sure if I should be happy or insulted what exactly is twice as much as nothing?? by the way, the dog wen to detox while I was in Vegas…no more beer for her!
you know, DOB, for some reason when i visited Shea back in 2000 it felt like it was already in the middle of a giant parking lot. more so than turner stadium, it felt like you were entering six flags or something. it seemed like it was far away from the famous NYC skyline and was just in the middle of an enormous parking lot sea. just my impression from a decade ago.

FML.

Bronson Arroyo got the win. He gave up 5 runs (3 HR) in 7 innings. With the win tonight, Arroyo upped his record to 5-2.
Interesting Stat Comparison:
Arroyo: 5-2, 7.02 ERA
Santana: 4-2, 0.78 ERA

you know, DOB, for some reason when i visited Shea back in 2000 it felt like it was already in the middle of a giant parking lot. more so than turner stadium, it felt like you were entering six flags or something. it seemed like it was far away from the famous NYC skyline and was just in the middle of an enormous parking lot sea. just my impression from a decade ago.
