DOB,

Schafer had another 0′fer tonight, his 6th 0 hit night in the past 8 games. It seems obvious to this casual fan that the kid is overmatched and now is starting to tinker with his swing which can’t be good. I know we don’t have many options but are they going to send him down to try and regain his stroke or keep running him out there to put up more goose eggs?

PS: New Bingham disc out early June.

KeyLargo, you’re 9:22 was absolute hilarity! (is that a word? if not, it should be!)

For all you Cox bashers, he sure did make the right calls tonight, first with the lineup, then with the hit and runs and pulling Lowe out at the right time. More clutch 2 out hitting by the Braves tonight and my man Kotchy is really coming on strong. He is starting to produce some mighty fine numbers for our 1st bagger. KJ is coming back around and Mac is back, which makes a huge difference in out lineup. Diaz is a really good spot starter.

I don’t understand why everyone is upset about Philips being a homer for the Mets. He did draft most of the star players for the Mets when he was their GM, so of course he is going to be partial.

Efrim, I like Nicklas Backstrom and Kozlov as much as the next guy (Backstrom especially), but Ovie’s presence has really improved their games, IMO. But you’re right, they do have more than Ovie with Semin and Fedorov on that second line. But they’re not like the Wings that can run out lines of Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom, Franzen-Filppula-Hossa and Cleary-Hudler-Draper. Man, what depth.

That said, I like the Pens in game 7. I do. Losing Gonchar hurts bad but can’t ever discount having two premiere players like Crosby and Malkin.

But how ’bout those Braves tonight? Gotta love it when you steal one away from Johan Freakin’ Santana, huh? D. Lowe lookin’ great.

Am I the only one who has noticed how teams are playing some really crummy baseball against us?

I’ve seen people complain about our team “not getting breaks,” but we’ve been getting plenty of them. The real surprise is that they haven’t taken advantage of them enough to be leading the division. Maybe we’re in the midst of one of those seasons where things will just fall into place for us. I guess we shall see, won’t we?

I was watching the ESPN feed tonight. I didn’t want to hear Joe and Chip do their homer stuff. It’s kinda sad that I’ve gotten to that point, but I’d rather hear Steve Phillips call out the Mets for not having “winning players” like Jeter or Youk or Pedroia. That stuff is great. If FireJoeMorgan.com were still running, that would have made a hell of a posting. Every wacko Met fan alive was probably cursing and tearing at their eyes while Phillips was talking.

Just an all-around fun night for a Braves fan.

Theres nothing positive but the norm for a Santana start. No run support and either excellent defense or shoddy defense behind him. Both of his losses came with errors being made leading to runs. Now Plefrey for some reason gets plenty of run support. The braves used Citi Field well in the late innings, hitting it in front of the outfielders which the Mets have learned to use to their advantage lately. Let’s see how tomorrow goes, like I said on the trash talk side, it wouldn’t seem right.

On the so-called broadcasters on ESPN – The fact of the matter is ESPN is a national network which means it is in their best interest from a business standpoint to air programming that generates the most national appeal and ratings. This is why the biggest market teams get the most nationally televised games. I totally get that. This, however, doesn’t exempt their broadcasters from being impartial to the big market teams during their telecast. And you did not watch the same game tonight if you didn’t hear obvious bias toward the mutts. This is understandably irritating to fans who tune in that are not rooting for the yanks, sox, mets, cubs, etc.

Awesome win for our guys tonight! Lowe outpitched a another great pitcher and Diaz/Kotchman/Escobar came through in the clutch.

I’ve come to the conclusion that ESPN is trying to butter people up for the Mets as the best team in the game this year. I believe it’s all a matter of politics, which is one of the worst things to do in sports. If kotchman keeps hitting like this, then the Braves will continue to win. Schafer really needs to go back to AAA. He can’t catch up to the fastball right now and his swing is really long. There has got to be a capable centerfielder out there who can do better than 1 hit every 7 games. Schafer is still the future, but the Braves aren’t doing him any favors by keeping him with the big club at the moment.

I guess I’m a troll too, but oh well. I’ve been watching the game on DVR and it just ended for me. Actually it ended the moment Jose Reyes made that stupid nonchalant play on McCann’s grounder. I knew the game was over at that moment. Santana won last Wednesday 1-0 against the Phillies, and it was going to take that tonight to win, cause we can’t hit the ball for crap when Santana is on the hill.

My theory: (and not one announcer has mentioned this that i know of)

No one gives credit to the opposing pitcher. I think when a guy sees he is matched up against Johan, he thinks, “Wow, i have to be almost perfect tonight or we lose.” He has more focus than at any point of the season until the stretch run of a pennant race or the playoffs. I just think these opposing pitchers “man up” when they go against Johan.

Look at Lowe tonight. I DVR’d the Peachtree feed (I was afraid ESPN would black it out), and they mentioned on there that Derek Lowe had induced one double play this season before tonight….ONE!!! Tonight he induced two double plays to get him out of tight situations. Again, an example to me of increased focus and concentration (which was light years ahead of his last start).

Too many superstars on the mets team. They cannot play together or support Santana because now he gets all the publicity. Beltran, Reyes and Wright were the “big boys” along with Delgado. Now, it is all
Santana and I don’t believe they will ever give him run support even if they “cough up” the lead. What they did to Randolph was a good example of how far that click will stoop to get themselves back in the spotlight. Omar has blinders on if he does not see the foolish power play going on between his players. I will never believe the Mets can succeed as long as this star studded lineup continue to fight for the
spotlight.

Someone mentioned a bit earlier about Shafer. The subject is a bit easier to speak about after a winning streak. It doesn’t seem so “knee jerk” to question how long the Braves can go with Shafer. We know the offense will struggle again sometime. So how long can you go with Shafer in center before sending him back to AAA?

He isn’t striking out as much as he was a week ago, but he’s not hitting the ball with ANY authority. It’s obvious he’s just trying to cut down on the K’s. I appreciate that, but he’s just hitting dribblers and weak pop ups. The kid is overmatched. He just doesn’t seem ready for MLB yet.

The Braves aren’t a sexy club. They don’t play in New York or L.A. They don’t have a superstar. They were boring even when they were winning division titles, but the constant winning made them worthy of being talked about. If fans want the Braves to be ESPN darlings, they’ll just have to win a ****load of games. By in Shea…I hope you know what I meant it’s kinda late and basically that game he walked like 6 in a row but then settled down…he grew up befor our eyes during that game….I think that’s when I truely started liking him

BTW Mitchell, tonight you beat the Mets

Wasn’t that the goal of the exercise? Some very confusing statements on the ‘ol blog sometimes…

Nice win tonight. Hopefully Jair keeps up the good work and we get another win tomorrow. I’ll be at Citi Field to cheer on the Bravos, anyone else going? Go Braves!

Tom-

Thanks!

Tomaawkin-

If you can tell me the difference between losing to a team that finished in the top 20 on the road and losing at home to a team that did not, I will give you that FLA deseved to play in the national title game over USC, but just because they play in the SEC does not mean the sun rises because they ask is to! (i do believe that a FLA/USC match up would have been way better then the one we got…and USC’s defense would have shut fla’s offense down)

What timing. Shortly after your 10:49 post, the host of the MLB talk show on XM, just said the same thing. Maybe he read your post.

Yeah, richbrave … some don’t like Anders just because he’s a Met fan, but I like him. He posts intelligently, even if you don’t agree with him.

Chop Chop,

I really think some of the in-studio guys especially are afraid of the Braves. Guys like Kruk and even Harold Reynolds over on MLB used to pick the Braves every year to win the Pennant and even the WS! Then, year after year, it didn’t happen. Some of those guys had egg on their face even after the Braves steak ended at 14 years and they were still picking them. Heck even last year some of the network baseball people were picking the Braves!

Not this year. As the Braves have eroded as an organization, so has the love that some of those guys used to give the Braves.

Don’t think you’re going to see much love for the Braves until they at least win another division.

I agree on Anders. He’s come a long way.

Maybe it was all those lectures from him mom ;-) .

You’re right! :)

Also, it’s a damn good thing I didn’t bond out Marietta Derek for running on the field in Philly Fri. night. We’ve got 3 in a row since he’s been locked up…….. DPTC.
