I am a total city girl, but I think I’d rather sever my own limb then live in Vegas…and those guys wouldn’t have noticed if a naked Angelina Jolie had walked in and sat down in one of their laps…did I mention they were from Chicago?
it’s a shame the guy playing small ball will be out of the line up in a week. not saying i dont want McCann back, but come on’, is it too late for Ross to play 2B?
I must confess, I was really against the Vazquez acquisition at the time, but I am beginning to think I was wrong. Vazquez is a real gamer, as evidenced by his recent pitching performances, his 3 sacrifice hit effort a couple of weeks ago, and this last AB that put the ball in play. He really picked up Schafer.
I would like thank David Wright for being the strikeout king of the NLE, I would like to thank Vazqy for a quick inning, Jeffy for rediscovering how to hit like a major leaguer, Maine for the walks, Frank for signing Ross, Ross for knowing more fundamentals than half the team, Castillio for the juggling clinic, Kelly for taking a walk, and Yunel for not grounding out.
… and those guys wouldn’t have noticed if a naked Angelina Jolie had walked in and sat down in one of their laps
cabravesfan — There isn’t enough alcohol, in the state of Nevada, for me not to notice that. They must’ve been gay. (not that there’s anything wrong with that)
Tomahawkin’ – funny you said that – they made me realize that I miss sunflower seeds from my softball days (which I haven’t gotten back to since moving here). I also appreciated their comments on the umpire doing one at a time.
cabraves – did anyone answer you on the weather? I think the rain is going to hold off but it is humid as hell tonight. I was soaked with sweat after I ran and I only did 3 miles. We’ve only had a few really humid days thus far but it’ll be back with a vengeance soon enough. I’d hate to pitch in a polyester uniform for any long innings, like Vaz just did, but they’re used to it, I guess.
Just to clarify on McCann: He’s playing at Rome on Wednesday not because Gwinnett has a morning game (they don’t) but because you can’t use the DH for Triple-A games between two NL teams. He’s going to DH Wednesday for Rome, then catch Thursday for Gwinnett.
At least that’s my understanding. I’ll clarify once more if that’s not correct.
That Vazquez trade is looking brilliant! Did you guys see smallbridge on sunday night baseball, Jon and Joe were making fun of him!
Cabravesfan, Sounds like the guys were boarderline obnoxious. I have never been there, I’d agree sunny CA would be ideal. Plus you have some mountains close by(for boarding), went to LAX to mammoth two years ago, so I feel you on that Looong drive! I’m actually currently setting up a move to Colorado soon.
Yes that’s right. I can’t wait to get back out there. Did y’all see me on tv just now? Hi Braves Fans! See you tomorrow! DOB tell my buddy Bowman I said hey! See? I’m working on my friendliness.
The drive from Vegas is usually only about 4 hours, which is not bad…but with Sunday traffic, the weather, and CalTrans f*ing up the highway it was bad.
Vegas is great for about 3 or 4 days…I’d take the beach over just about anywhere, any day:)
Who said stealing bases will put a team in first place?
Speed disrupts, speed is good in football, basketball, tennis, soccer, horseracing, NASCAR, track and field, swimming, skating, and other sports but not baseball? Because the numbers tell us so?
The Next 10 Days are gonna be a Test…If we Get Clowned like we have over the last 2 weeks we are gonna be hanging with the Nats…This Offense needs to get straightened out ASAP!
Tomahawkin: Castillo had hip surgery after the 2002 season (his last big steals year), and has had other injuries since. He’s not nearly the speedster he was back in the day, in his early years with the Marlins.
For everyone that bashes Jordan Schafer for stiking out, remember he is a 22 year old who only played 1/2 a season above A ball. He will learn. Baseball is about making adjustments. The kid has done a lot of positive things so far this season.
Wayne, while I appreciate your sarcasm, don’t fall into the trap that the other bozos have fallen into on the ole’ blog.
The SB totals don’t tell the whole story. Not only is this team not capable of stealing bases, they seem to not be capable of playing consistently “fundamental” baseball (there you go folks, I waited until May 4th to drop the “f” bomb). Go figure. That’s been their “staple” since the core of this team has come up since 2005.
Who’s fault is it? The players? Or the coaches who are guiding them? I’ll go with a little of both.
But it’s the utter lack of power (or should I say udder), that the lack of speed actually shows up. If this team could hit HR, not a single person (even Coach) would be bringing up the speed). On the flip-side, if they could manufacture runs, by running amuck on teams, nobody would be pizzing and moaning about the lack of power.
Unfortunately, this team doesn’t do either very well.
In reality, this team could use a little of both. A leadoff hitter that can get on base, disrupt the pitchers and spark the lineup would do wonders, ALONG WITH adding a real cleanup hitter to the order.
So, the way I see it, this lineup is only 3/4 of the way “complete” (and that’s when McCann is in there – without Mac, it’s a different story).
But in the end, if we had a guy that was stealing bases, he would simply be getting stranded on 2nd and 3rd, instead of 1st base.
But the REST of the speed element that basestealers would bring to the table would certainly change the lineup.
One of these days Wren will put a complete roster together.
BA put out an article about the Myrtle Beach Pelicans the other day, with the usual stuff about Heyward/Freeman, and some of the usual power/K’s talk about Johnson. But, they passed on a little bit about two under-the-radar Pelican players, 3B Donnell Linares and C Matt Kennelly:
“The 25-year-old Linares, who signed last year after defecting from Cuba, was off to a slow start at the plate but impressed the Braves with his defensive abilities in spring training. He, too, has above-average power and had a pair of home runs among his first seven hits. Kennelly, a native of Australia, has a smooth swing with good power and polished skills behind the plate, particularly for a 20-year-old who was a pitcher and corner infielder as an amateur.”
I love speed in a lineup. I just don’t think it is the one deciding factor for an offense. More important to get on base. Gotta steal first, then worry about second and third.
Smyrna Jim – I actually went back to see if the 14 year olds’ favorite word had been used in the last 15 minutes and I could not find a single example of Braves ____K, BC _____KS, Kelly _____KS. I don’t think they can complete a sentence without that word.
They have no desire to be positive and cheer the Braves. Only to find fault, blame and criticize others. Their Mommies must really be mean.
N8, if the Braves can get McCann and Anderson healthy, and get KJ ironed out (and OUT of the friggin’ leadoff spot!!!!)… I think this lineup will be just fine.
We haven’t seen this lineup’s potential, with the exception of the opening series in Phili.
If the lineup is reasonably healthy, and each member of the starting lineup is performing up to realistic expectations… the lineup could finish near or at the top of the league in team average, on base percentage, doubles, and hitting with RISP.
And if everyone’s performing up to their capability, they’ll hit some homeruns. Won’t be anywhere near the league lead in that category, but not at all power deficient.
Not saying all of that WILL happen, but it very well could. IF we have a little luck in the health dept.
