JD, I don’t think it’s that Hampton was hurt so much. It’s the fact that the Braves were so patient with him, wanted him back, and Hampton proceeds to take LESS money to bolt for Houston.

I think ATL fans feel we deserved better than that. I know there’s talk of his wanting to be closer to his kids after a divorce… but his kids are in Arizona. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t there a baseball team in Arizona these days? If that was really the motivation, he could have played at home and seen his kids every other day. so I have a hard time buying that explanation.

After seeing all the derision directed towards Hampton over the past few years, I’m pretty sure they were upset with him because he was being paid so much money to do nothing. Not because he didn’t come back. I remember a lot of people wanting to cut ties ASAP.

Yunel out at home, I don’t think he was out or Pudge wouldn’t have tried to tag him again. Anyway, RBI single by Frenchy.

Btw, back in the 4th, Pudge grounded the ball thru the vacant SS position when Yunel covered second on that hit-and-run play (Pence on 1st).

Why was our SS covering second on the hit-and-run with a RH batter (Pudge) at the plate?

I would’ve thought the “off”-guy — 2B — would be covering with a RH batter up.

KC

Mitchell, yeah if Sid Bream weren’t still alive, I’d swear Kotchman was Sid reincarnated.

If and when BC every sees fit to move Schafer to the leadoff spot, and McCann and Anderson get healthy… I think Kotchman ought to be hitting 8th. Not because he’s not better than the typical 8 hitter… but because everyone else in the lineup will be just as good and Kotchman clogs the basepaths.

ncscoots (4:36 pm): “Seriously, I understand what you [michael] are saying, but “small ball” is not the same as “fundamentally sound”, and I think that’s where folks get off track. Giving up outs in an effort to score minimal runs, when you are in fact having trouble scoring runs, compounds the felony.”

Thanks — that is an important and necessary distinction.

“Small ball” = giving up an out in exchange for a base. Plain and simple. Period, the end.

When that base you get in exchange for the out (which you can afford to give) is home plate, and the run you score thereby is significant (tying or go-ahead), then “small ball” can be very valuable indeed.

If the base you get is only 2B or 3B, “small ball” can be fruitfully debated, but you usually would need to have more outs in your pocket than in the preceding scenario in order to make it pay.

Otherwise — ehhh. Not worth it.
