By the way, turns out Kawakami had a cortison injection in his sore shoulder on Monday. He did light throwing today without incident, and the Braves think he’ll be ready to pitch Tuesday.

Anybody know why I still have a job with the Braves other than winning that MVP and leading the Braves to the 1991 series? I cannot believe these morons still pay me.

Heyward’s been out with a leg strain, either a hamstring or a quad. I’m trying to find out specifically. He’s supposed to play tonight, I think.

nolie, from the research department: Hanson has thrown 461 pitches, 304 for strikes. (mbatl)

thank you research dept. that would make his K-100 better than the 7.6 I guessed, more like 8.2. Very good but still a big difference than the K/9IP

I have a feeling if Heyward was injured, we’d here something. Since there is no news on him, I suspect they’re just resting him.

(I’d be really pumped if you could get some dirt on Rohrbough, too, but no biggie…)

“Why are you all asking me why McCann didn’t have Lasik right away, as if I’m part of some coverup or none of the four specialists he’s seen here and in D.C. have the knowledge to make the right decision? Mac said they told him the surgery should be the last resort, perhaps because the recovery might keep him out longer, or perhaps because they just don’t want to burn/laser the guy’s eye for the second time in 18-19 months? Some act as though it’s like getting a flu shot, having one’s corneas cut, which is what Lasik basically is. He was younger than most docs I’ve talked to recommend getting the procedure to begin with (22 when he had it).”

THANK YOU. I think wanting to avoid a potentially career-ending surgery at all costs is a no-brainer for Brian McCann. Likewise for the organization.

My boy Blaine “Goo Boy” Boyer tossed a solid inning last night, lowering his ERA to only 18.00. Let’s see how long it takes for LaRussa/Duncan to trust him in a meaningful game and how fast it blows up in their faces. Then we will see how fast the round one get’s sent out of St. Louis.

OK, just got the report from Frank Wren on the injured prospects: Heyward tweaked a hamstring, should be ready “any day now.”

Freeman has a little side soreness and will miss a game or two.

Rohrbaugh turned his ankle. He’ll be back soon, too.

because I calc’ed Hanson’s at 8.whatever, and you’re saying it’s “ok” and I’m looking at Harden’s and going “ok?!?!” (OHIO STEVE)

I was sloppy with the “decent” mostly because it is still a large difference between the two for him and partly because I think a “stud” pitcher should do better in the minors at that than in the majors(never investigated that to prove it though). Plus of course I was referring to my guess of 7.6 from not knowing the real pitch counts. And some guys actually go up.Smoltz did I believe in the last numbers I saw. Certainly not insulting Tommy, but I think it gives a further indication of his pitch count problems so far.

Look at what Cox said about Hampton:

“He went through a lot during those years,” manager Bobby Cox told the Braves’ site. “He’s a gamer. I like Mike a lot.”

He’s a gamer?

THIS IS PROOF THAT COX IS EITHER A SENILE PATHETIC OLD FOOL OR JUST SIMPLY A BLITHERING DUNDERHEAD!

A “gamer”?

A “gamer” is someone who straps it up DESPITE pain and/or injuries and ACTUALLY PLAYS THE GAME.

Hampton did no such thing. He played in what, 24 games in 4 years. And got paid $44 million dollars?

Hampton is not a gamer.

However he is a (choose any of the following):

goldbrick, wuss, slacker, cheat, fraud, poser, chump, stiff, crybaby, coward, bush-leaguer, etc.

BERNIE MADOFF could learn a few tricks from mister take-the-money and not do anything for it.

“expect the worst, why don’t you try tearing a pec and then pitching on it? And then when you do, come back and tell us how it feels, mmmk?”

Yes, for $44 million dollars I would pitch with a torn pec.

People in India have their kidneys cut out for a few hundred bucks.

Agree with expect. Bobby only hurts his credibility with such comments.

mbatl

Braves paid Hampton $48.5 mil for 35 wins and 24 losses.

Dodgers have paid Jason Schmidt $47 mil for 1 win and 4 losses, plus whatever he does this year (and he’s still rehabbing).

Not saying the Hampton situation didn’t hurt, but things could be and sometimes are worse. I like Hampton… hope we beat him tonight of course, but wish him the best.

Sorry DOB…was just looking to see if there was any specific reason why Lasik was the last choice. I was only commenting on it (my first time to do so by the way) because there is a HUGE difference in depth perception when wearing glasses and contacts. I sometimes wear my glasses at night to let my eyes get some air (and to rest) and things look drastically different. Since pitch recognition is so key to good hitting, I just felt with my personal experiences (having bad eye sight) that changing to glasses would be a very difficult task. Just asking my friend…not trying to badger you.

DOB (6:36 pm): “McCann hit with the glasses, said it felt good, that he thinks this will be the solution, at least until offseason. Docs have told him surgery should be last resort in-season, but it is an option if glasses doesn’t work out.
. . .
“But he said if he gets used to the glasses and the depth perception thing, this should work. . . .”

He may want to consider opening his stance a little as well.

What exactly do you mean you think that Hanson’s pitch counts have hurt him? Do you think that because he’s not throwing as many pitches it’s somehow messing him up?

N8

I think Mac should go with the Jose Offerman glasses, or perhaps the Horace Grant vareity. Better yet, how about the black ones with the skull and crossbones in the middle like Rick “wild thing” Vaughn wore?

I don’t care if he looks like Harry Caray, as long as they get him back in the lineup. This is getting silly.

On a side note, NOTHING I like more than when I rant for two days, and DOB has a chunk of his next blog saying basically what I’ve been saying. Especially when there is quotes from players saying the same things.

Now if he could just get some players to go on record saying Bobby’s lineups stink. :-)

So, you people saying that Hampton owes YOU money…

You guys all work for the insurance company that paid his salary, or what? In the same breath, are you people also of the belief that Bobby owes you money for bonehead decisions in the playoffs, that Wohlers owes you money for the pitch to Leyritz, or that Danny Bautista owes you money for falling over his shadow in the playoffs? Perhaps you should call Joey Devine and demand some sort of compensation. You guys must REALLY be pizzed at Nick Esasky, huh?

Good god, get over yourselves. You have EVERY right to pizz and moan about results on the field. Hell, what would have to say, if I wasn’t complaining. But to think that somebody “owes” the Braves anything, much less the fans because he was hurt? Unreal.

Please, let’s not turn on the negative waves tonight concerning Mike Hampton. He pitches for that other team now, and it not my concern.

Eye problems are a serious thing, and I definitely think McCann should take things slowly, and methodically. No rash decisions needed. We all miss his presence on the team, but his eyesight is not something to be trifled with.
